FYI, TARO Bellamia won't necessarily be competing every month going forward, only when we have a great song we want to send, so we'll be here sporadically cool2.gif (hence last month's absence!)

Don't get so invested, we all know I'm just an awful person...

Michael Aldag
Teenage Drama

Meet Michael Aldag: a singer and a songwriter (but not a singer-songwriter), a producer, an accidental TikTok star and — let’s not beat around the bush here — every inch a total popstar. At just 19 his prodigious knack for observational tunesmithery vividly captures life’s joys, sorrows, and confusing inbetween bits. “My music’s for anybody who feels slightly-to-constantly overwhelmed and unsure of who they are, flailing around in this massive ridiculous world,” he states. “When I feel like I’m in a clouded headspace I can go and write, and by the time I’m done I’ll have a better idea of how I feel, even if what I’ve made is not a particularly good song.”

The better you get to know Michael the more you’ll get used to his self-effacing turns of phrase but, for the record, his songs really are particularly good. Since uploading his debut single Entitled in 2019 he’s released a barrage of songs combining razor-sharp lyrics that recall Lily Allen, Lorde and The Streets, with fresh beats that see 80s synthpop through the prism of 21st Century existential angst. Somewhere among it all, Michael says, are some unexpected influences. There’s Marina & The Diamonds, whose music Michael’s dad would often play in the car on family trips, while his penchant for an anthemic chorus could give Bastille or The Killers a run for their money. "I remember seeing The Killers at the Echo Arena a few years back,” Michael adds. “And when I saw Brandon with his foot on the monitor I just thought: ‘Okay. Wow. That is exactly what I want to do.’”

This may be pop made in a bedroom, but brand it ‘bedroom pop’ at your peril. The ambition of Michael’s music reaches far beyond the four walls of a West Kirby box room: it’s anthemic, global, main-stage music you can sing your heart out to. Or as Michael himself imagines it: "You’re on a cliff somewhere, you’re hanging on with one hand and you're reaching for something else with the other: you're crying out for redemption.” He pauses. “I mean, I suppose you could say it's quite melodramatic. But the point is, I'm not making niche music. I'd love to headline Glastonbury.”

He’s well on his way, working from strong foundations built by, as Michael puts it, “hoovering up Liverpool's talent development projects”. These include a place on the Liverpool branch of the Levi’s Music Project, a music accelerator scheme that saw him performing at fashion launches in Brussels and Barcelona, and a spot at the LIMF Academy, which selects and supports Merseyside- based artists. During this time he’s been recording a steady stream of music, from Entitled (a pointed critique of social media’s performative mental health discourse), to newer music like Killers-influenced banger Polaroid and Tonsillitis, which came about during a bleak period in 2020 when Michael lost a close family member then soon after discovered his girlfriend had been cheating on him. "I was very low and very alone, but these days I can go back to that song and think: Well, that was how bad I was feeling then, and now I'm feeling better about it’ — it's a good port of call for any difficult future situations I find myself in.”

One big moment came when he posted while working at a spa checking hot tub-obsessed pensioners’ temperatures in 2020. A strange way to find an audience, perhaps, but his TikTok bio — “I MAKE MUSIC – CHECK IT OUT” — leaves no doubt where his passion truly lies. And when you go in search of that music you’ll find another bio, on streaming services, that promises: “If you like hearing ginger boys whining over some synths then you’re going to love me.”

Thanks Rich heart.gif he's been on my radar for a while but it was Teenage Drama that really reeled me in, love at first listen! I somehow missed Ghosted when it came out but I'm really enjoying that right now too, and Tonsillitis is a stunner. He's just about one of the only TikTokers I pay much attention to as well kink.gif

Alfie Templeman
Candyfloss

Starting out in 2016 at age 13, England’s Alfie Templeman has blossomed into a sonic whiz who crafts danceable indie-pop gems like the 2020 hit “Obvious Guy” that are loaded with ’80s-inspired R&B hooks and synths. - Apple Music

Every time I look inside the mirror, I can see that girl, I think I used to be her...

Kate Nash
Wasteman

No matter how sweet her hooks, Kate Nash will always dish out the hard, bitter truth—especially to those who are out of line. Since catching the ear of fellow alt-pop provocateur Lily Allen on MySpace in the mid-2000s, the London-raised singer/songwriter has defined her sound by its unpredictability, experimenting with piano-pounding rock, frenetic garage-punk and fizzy synth-pop—sometimes all at once. Just as loose and playful with her lyrics, Nash balances the puerile with the profound, all in the name of love, self-preservation and feminism. At just 20, she topped the UK charts with her 2007 debut album, Made of Bricks, and its relationship-crumbling anthems like “Foundations”. With her sassy put-downs and London accent, she was quickly likened to Allen, but Nash has long sidestepped those comparisons. She spent the rest of her 20s flexing her songwriting chops, working with Suede’s Bernard Butler for the girl-group-inspired My Best Friend Is You, then digging into her punk side with the riot-grrrl-leaning Girl Talk. Age has certainly not softened that edge—in sound and attitude—as Nash continues to tell off every jerk (2018’s “Hate You”) while trying to find peace within herself (2021’s “Misery”). - Apple Music

God, aren't you sick of it by now?

Ruel
YOU AGAINST YOURSELF

The laid-back, soulful ease with which Ruel sings his catchy pop tunes could only be delivered by a true natural. But the British-Australian songwriter—born Ruel Vincent van Dijk in 2002—has also been working at it for a sizable chunk of his life. Ruel was on the precipice of his teenage years when his dad sent a demo of him doing a James Bay tune to producer M-Phazes (Demi Lovato, Eminem) in 2015, kickstarting his run as one of 21st-century pop’s foremost purveyors of feels. His debut EP, 2018’s Ready, proved that he was exactly that—before even becoming a legal adult, Ruel built a record packed with well-crafted, R&B-inflected, chart-ready songs. The breezy rhythm of “Dazed & Confused” is juxtaposed with the heartbreak that staccato strings set front and centre for the throbbing chorus; and “Younger”, with its sugary vocal hooks, bouncy piano and gospel singers, softens the blow of a story about friends growing apart over time. In 2020, his music continued to mature with Bright Lights, Red Eyes. Using a stream-of-consciousness writing style, Ruel’s bedroom-pop vulnerability shines through on songs like the rousing “courage”, creating a tenderness and intimacy that’s impressive for an artist of any age. - Apple Music

The smoke from what you broke keeps growing higher...

Knox
Dumpster Fire

Cast your mind back to the early 2000’s where pop punk was dominating the airwaves, you couldn’t move two inches without Fallout Boy on the radio and we were being inundated with summer anthems that would shape our adolescence. The resurgence of pop punk has been a glorious thing, some artists have gone for a more hard-hitting sound whilst others have ventured into the more pop centric area, but they’ve always added their own flair to the iconic sound. I’ve stumbled across hundreds of these singles as of late but, after one day of aimlessly scrolling on TikTok, I came across Knox who’s latest single Sneakers is serotonin in sonic form. One listen and you’ll be smiling from ear to ear whilst singing the engrossing bridge, “cherry chapstick drama queen.”

Giving me flashbacks to Blink182 mixed with We The Kings track Check Yes Juliet, Sneakers is filled with feel good energy that transcends onto you, turning any gloomy day to one beaming with sunlight. Joy floods your brain as the sunkissed-jovial melodies wrap themselves around you, blocking out the barrage of depressing news coming in, whilst his alluring vocal charms you with its high-octane charisma that oozes out of every orpheus. However, it’s that chorus that hits harder than anything else, “but I don’t really need to see what’s under that T-shirt, I could but I gotta fuck with me first.” I’ve had that stuck in my head all week and I cannot get enough of it. My heavy rotation has never been so one sided in all my life. Simply unskippable.

Doesn't take much to feel this numb, to feel this bad when you're this fucked up...

44phantom
hurricane

Brayton Mathews, better known by his stage name of 44phantom, is an Oklahoma-born emerging artist in the scene of grunge-pop. Growing up, Mathews had a passion for music, listening to everything from Kurt Cobain, Carrie Underwood, and Bob Dylan to Lil Wayne and Drake, perhaps influencing his style with an added hip-hop flare. During 2019, 44phantom broke into the grunge-pop scene with his single, Break Your Heart after it wound up on popular YouTube channel Promoting Sounds and amassed a total of over a million streams across streaming platforms. He stated to have adopted the name 44phantom to honour his late second cousin and carry on his family’s connection to the number 44. In an interview, Mathews confirmed: "My oldest brother was born at 2:44, my sister was born at 8:44, and I was born at 11:44. My dad’s sobriety date is 4/4/15. My grandpa was a very talented baseball player and he wore the number 44. That number was a part of my life before I was even born. My cousin Danny died in a car accident. I was thinking of the Danny Phantom cartoon to honor him, so I came up with 44phantom for my name."

Torine
see u in hell

With a penchant for rock chicks, electric guitars, great choruses, and a nostalgic relationship to the 2000s, 22-year-old Torine has already establish herself as a different type of artist to the Scandinavian pop flora. Whether you’ve heard of Torine or not, you would’ve heard her vocals. In 2019, she ravaged the charts by singing on Alan Walker, Tungevaag and K-391’s “Play”, a remake of the Mangoo classic “Eurodancer”. This was followed up by a new collaboration with Alan Walker earlier this year, the radio hit “Hello World”. Over 200M streams plus a tour in Europe and Asia later, she has since released multiple singles and collabs with artists like Broiler, CLMD and the previously mentioned Alan Walker. As her releases have grown, so have her total streams and listeners, not to mention her musical ambitions. The songs alternate between light and more serious themes, juxtaposed by sonic, tempo and production value that is both playful and uplifting. Fall 2022 marked a new chapter for Torine and her musical universe. She released her debut EP ‘UNHOLY’, an expression of Torine’s life both past and present. It tells her story of growing up in a drug-affected family stuck in a strict, small Christian community in Norway. It is easy to draw parallels between UNHOLY and the story of the girl from Arendal who did everything to appear perfect. Who lied to keep up the facade and to protect the family. She who just wanted to be like everyone else and live a normal life. - Official Website

BJSC 153: 100th Entry

You say we're breaking up, what a shame...

Conan Gray
Telepath

Had he been born a decade or two earlier, Conan Gray’s technique for coping with the miseries and triumphs of his last year of high school—singing into a cheap microphone in his bedroom—might never have introduced him to the world. But for the Asian-American singer/songwriter who was born in Georgetown, Texas, in 1998 and grew up worshipping Taylor Swift and getting bullied for being different, vlogging and uploading his music helped him find an audience fast. First, he sang Adele and Frank Ocean covers. Then he tried his hand at issuing his own dreamlike, emotionally fraught songs—his voice breathy and androgynous—and reached a community beyond and far bigger than his small town. In a few quick years, Apple Music named him an Up Next artist, while in 2020 Swift tweeted that she was “obsessed” with his songs. Gray’s 2017 single “Idle Town” was an ethereal, conflicted evocation of the end of high school that resonated with the hundreds of thousands who streamed it. That led Republic Records to sign him and release his 2018 debut EP, Sunset Season. Gray is a gusher of Gen Z sad songs, dark moods, and big feels, like his friend Billie Eilish. His 2020 debut album, Kid Krow, made him sound ready to headline venues on his own, thanks to the candy-colored disco creepfest “Maniac” and “Heather,” an eerie ballad about longing for and hating the person one’s crush is crushing on. Gray sounds compellingly lonely, but his circle of friends and fans keeps getting wider. “Life,” he told Apple Music in 2020, “is just hilariously ironic all the time.” - Apple Music

I picked Telepath as my 100th entry because Conan is the only primary artist I have sent to score a UK top 20 hit after I sent him to the contest! I sent Maniac in 2019 to contest 120, and less than a year later, Heather was blowing up in the charts, peaking at #17 here. Maniac itself is also certified silver despite never charting, and Conan has won the adoration of global superstars including Elton John and his idol Taylor Swift. Telepath is my favourite song of Conan's so it felt right to send to this contest!

I'll be celebrating my 100th contest in another way too, stay tuned...

Can we count all the ways a heart breaks?

Cub Sport
Hold

Tapping the euphoric communion of the dance floor, Cub Sport’s fifth album celebrates the acceptance of love in all forms. Named for a poem by Jay Hulme, Jesus at the Gay Bar draws in part on the long-standing relationship between married band members Tim Nelson and Sam Netterfield, which also provided a central theme for 2020’s Like Nirvana. The pair first connected romantically as young teens but only came out later in life, as Nelson recounts in “Keep Me Safe”: “Went and got a girlfriend/Just to throw them off track.” It’s a touchingly personal study of what he now describes as an intense inner conflict—especially the pitched-down vocals that frame the central plea for validation. Beyond the increasingly mature subject matter, these songs continue the Brisbane quartet’s evolution from guitar-based indie pop to poignant electronic epiphanies. Once again producing themselves, Cub Sport retain that narrative intimacy while gliding easily from the crystalline breakbeats of “High for the Summer” to the glitzy house hook of “Songs About It”. After all, there are always more corners of the club to explore. - Apple Music
