BuzzJack Music Forum _ International Charts _ MTV Euro Top Chart - (broadcast on MTV Europe) - 2020

Posted by: bobiloko 12th January 2020, 05:36 PM

The old MTV European Top 20 chart, which had been broadcast on MTV Europe for more than 20 years, ended in 2012. However, it looks like since January 4, 2014 some European "chart" has started being broadcast again on MTV Europe. The chart is broadcast on Fridays from 9:00 to 11:00 CET and on Sundays from 6:00 to 8:00 CET.
Previously the chart seemed to be a Top 40 but in recent years MTV Europe sometimes has also shown positions between number 50 and number 41, indicating a Top 50. However, not all the positions are shown - some of them are skipped each week.
The songs that are skipped on this "Euro Top Chart" seem to be one of two cases: either songs that aren't played on MTV Europe in general (especially if they don't have an official video yet); or when an artist has more than one song in the chart, not all are shown.
It's also notable that the upper part of this chart is basically the same as the "Euro Top 20" chart that is broadcast on MTV Italy.

"Alone, Pt. II", a collaboration between Alan Walker and Ava Max, appears at number 32. The first part of "Alone" - without Ava Max - reached number 10 at the beginning of 2017, 3 years ago.
After MTV Europe played "Dance Monkey" by Tones And I at number 4, they played "Ride It" by DJ Regard... and showed its position as number 1. However, immediately after that they played "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa... and also showed its position as number 1!
"Don't Start Now" is the number 1 in the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" so there is no doubt that it's at the top of this chart, too. But I have no way of knowing whether "Ride It" is supposed to be at number 2 or number 3 - it's actually at number 4 in the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20"!?... That's why I haven't listed "Ride It" in this edition of the chart at all.

Sadly, this was one of those absurd editions of the chart where MTV Europe skipped the number 1... Supposedly, the chart-topper is "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd as it's number 1 in the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" chart... I guess the excuse is that the official video for "Blinding Lights" has been released relatively recently. But even if at some point MTV Europe start playing the video, what if "Blinding Lights" is not at the top anymore? Then it will have missed its chance to be shown as number 1...

"Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd still seems to be at the top (judging by the corresponding edition of MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" chart)... however, MTV Europe skipped the number 1 for the second week in a row!
Another strange thing is that they played "Rare" by Selena Gomez at number 23... while they never played "Lose You To Love Me" - which (if MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20" chart is to be believed) spent a couple of months in the Top 20 and even reached number 4... What is MTV Europe's criterion for which song to play and which - not?!...

1 The Weeknd - Blinding Lights

MTV Europe FINALLY played 2 songs which are having a lot of success around Europe - "Everything I Wanted" by Billie Eilish and...
..."Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd! This is supposedly the third consecutive week at the top for the song but the first week in which MTV Europe actually showed it as number 1... "Blinding Lights" becomes The Weekend's fourth chart-topper after "Can't Feel My Face", "The Hills" and "Starboy" (with Daft Punk).
And then we have another interesting story. This is what happens when a song does well in some European countries in a particular year... but only becomes successful in the UK the following year!
Our story starts in the beginning of February 2019 when "Power Over Me" by Dermot Kennedy first appeared in this chart. The song peaked at number 15 and last appeared here in the chart of April 6, 2019...
Now "Power Over Me" reappears in the chart at its peak position (number 15) more than TEN MONTHS LATER!

Pussycat Dolls score their FOURTH number 2 with "React". Their previous 3 songs which peaked at number 2 in this chart were "Stickwitu", "Beep" and "Jai Ho!" (with A.R. Rahman). However, they have never had a chart-topper in MTV Europe's European chart. "Don't Cha", admittedly their biggest single, only reached number 5...
...On the other hand, Nicole Scherzinger has had a number 1 as a "solo" artist - or, more precisely, in a trio with Timbaland and Keri Hilson. "Scream"!

"You Are The Reason" by Calum Scott appeared in the chart for several weeks in April 2018. Now it's back, 2 years later!! Does anyone know what might be the REASON for this?

MTV Europe has changed its schedule. Now the "Euro Top Chart" is broadcast from 10:00 to 12:00 CET on Friday and from 6:00 to 8:00 CET on Sunday.
This is really a unique occasion as MTV Europe played a total of 30 songs from the chart! They have NEVER played that many songs from a single edition of the chart before! It has happened once for MTV Europe to play 28 songs... but never 29 songs - let alone 30!!!!!!
It's great to see "Breaking Me" by Topic at number 2! It's an extremely rare occurrence for MTV Europe to play songs that are having success across Europe but haven't appeared in the UK singles chart (yet)!
Finally, when it comes to the song at the top of the chart, you might think that I'm joking... Well, while there is indeed a joke, it's MTV Europe themselves that have made it! They did in fact play "Roses" by The Chainsmokers and ROZES at number 1 instead of SAINt JHN's song with the same title! Otherwise, "Roses" by SAINt JHN is up 3 places for a very first week at the top. And "Roses" by The Chainsmokers and ROZES was in the chart during 2016. It peaked at number 13.

MTV Europe finally played "Say So" by Doja Cat again! At first they played it for 2 weeks but then for some reason they stopped playing it...
"Times Like These" by Live Lounge Allstars goes to number 1 immediately after doing the same in the UK chart - even though the only other singles chart the song has appeared in so far is the Irish one... By the way, the original by Foo Fighters has never been in MTV Europe's European chart.

It's not clear how MTV Europe decide which songs to play. Now they have played "Mamacita" by Black Eyed Peas... However, they never played Black Eyed Peas' previous single "Ritmo" - even though, judging by MTV Italy's "Euro Top 20", the song actually spent a few months in the Top 20 of the chart...
Something incredible happens this week - Rolling Stones are back in the chart!!!!!! The last time they appeared was with "Anybody Seen My Baby" back in 1997 - 23 years ago! "Living In A Ghost Town" is at number 3 - so it's their highest-peaking song in MTV Europe's European chart since at least the end of September 1989!

Strange things are happening to Dua Lipa. "Break My Heart", which was at number 2 just 2 weeks ago, has since fallen drastically 2-13-36. At the same time, her previous single "Physical", which spent 2 weeks at the top at the end of March/beginning of April, suddenly reappears as high as number 8!?
"Death Bed" by Powfu and Beabadoobee becomes another number 1 which, while actually doing well around Europe, still is surprising!

Over a month ago "Breaking Me" by Topic was at number 2 in the chart. Here is its chart run since then:

2-2-5-6-10-11-10-35-1

This is incredible. To reach number 2, fall as low as number 35... and then climb to the top!!!!!!
Not only that - this 35-1 jump is the biggest in the history of this chart. At least the biggest which we know about. It's completely possible that a previous number 1 climbed from a lower position but MTV Europe didn't play it during the edition of the chart preceding the one where it reached the top spot...

MTV Europe played "Rockstar" by DaBaby and Roddy Rich - but not an official video! What they played was titled "Rockstar (MTV Visualiser)" and seemed to be some mix of DaBaby videos... This shows that when MTV Europe are willing, they can create some video for a song in order to play it!
There is a new number 1 - and "ily" by Surf Mesa is yet another surprising chart-topper, even though it's having success across Europe!

In the previous edition of the chart "ily" by Surf Mesa fell 4 places from number 1 to number 5. Now it makes the opposite movement, climbing from number 5 back to number 1. This is its third week at the top.

1 Kygo & Tina Turner - What's Love Got To Do With It

Several months ago, "Break My Heart" by Dua Lipa peaked at number 2. However, after that it fell drastically and then MTV Europe stopped playing it. At the same time, her previous single "Physical" reappered in the Top 20. But now MTV Europe played "Break My Heart" again - and it's as high as number 16.
It's also interesting that "Dancing In The Moonlight" by Jubel is in the chart. The version by Toploader never appeared in MTV Europe's European chart.
And since we're talking about versions... The version of "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Kygo and Tina Turner is the new number 1!
This is Kygo's second chart-topper after "Higher Love" with Whitney Houston last year - another collaboration with an extremely famous singer with a long career...
What about Tina Turner?
She last appeared in MTV Europe's European chart with "When The Heartache Is Over" at the end of 1999/beginning of 2000. More than 20 years have passed since then...
Her only other chart-topper was "The Best" back in 1989 - 31 YEARS AGO!!!!!!
The original version of "What's Love Got To Do With It" never appeared in MTV Europe's European chart as the chart (and MTV Europe itself) didn't exist yet... But, funnily, ANOTHER version of "What's Love Got To Do With It" spent 3 weeks at number 1 in 1996 - the version by Warren G. and Adina Howard!

It's always nice when MTV Europe play songs that haven't appeared in the UK singles chart yet but are having success in other European countries - in this case, "Hypnotized" by Purple Disco Machine.
Strange things are going on with Dua Lipa's singles (again). In the previous edition of the chart "Hallucinate" was at number 5. In this edition of the chart MTV Europe didn't play "Hallucinate" at all... however, "Levitating" appears at number 8!
Last year "Higher Love" by Kygo and Whitney Houston spent 3 weeks at number 1. Now "What's Love Got To Do With It" improves on that achievement as it scores a fourth week at the top.

...But what about "Gangnam Style" by PSY? Well, there was no European chart broadcast on MTV Europe between August 2012 and the end of 2013...

1 Miley Cyrus - Midnight Sky 1 Up

It's a little difficult to determine exactly but it seems like MTV Europe has changed its schedule. Now the "Euro Top Chart" is broadcast from 9:30 to 11:30 CET on Friday and from 6:00 to 8:00 CET on Sunday.
"Midnight Sky" by Miley Cyrus returns to number 1 - this is its fourth (nonconsecutive) week there. Now the song has had 3 separate runs at the top.
And at number 13 we find "Hot Stuff" - yet another collaboration of Kygo with an extremely famous singer with a long career. This is the first time Donna Summer appears in MTV Europe's European chart - at least since September 1989!

The big question is: how come "Mood" hasn't appeared in this chart yet??

AT LAST!!!!!! "Jerusalema" by Master KG and Nomcebo reached number 2 several months ago and has spent all the time since then in the Top 10... yet only now, at the end of November, does it climb to the very top of this chart!
It's wonderful to see a song which hasn't really had success in the UK singles chart (its peak position there so far is number 55) but has done extremely well in other European countries become number 1 in MTV Europe's European chart!
Until now MTV Europe played the original version of "Jerusalema". In this edition of the chart for the first time they played the remix including Burna Boy.
It's also notable that MTV Europe didn't play the official video of "Hawai" by Maluma (currently at number 31) but a live performance.
And let's just appreciate the amazing longevity of "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd. It reached number 1 in February and is still here 9 months later. The song just refuses to leave and even rebounds 32-15 this week!

1 Master KG & Nomcebo - Jerusalema 3 Up

MTV Europe played "Forever Young" by Becky Hill even though the video was released only several days ago. So they really have no excuse for not playing songs with recently released videos!
This year strange things are happening with Dua Lipa's singles. "Levitating" peaked at number 8 at the beginning of September. A month ago her next single, "Fever", debuted in the chart and MTV Europe stopped playing "Levitating". "Fever" still hasn't managed to reach the Top 10... but now "Levitating" appears again at a new peak position - number 6!
And what's happening with "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd is just amazing. The song reached number 1 in February. Not only is it still here 10 months later, this week it even jumps back to the Top 3, going 18-3!!!!!!

It's remarkable that none of the old Christmas songs appear in the chart. Instead, a new one is here - "This Christmas" by Jess Glynne at number 3.
"Prisoner" by Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa returns to number 1 for a second week there. However, what's more interesting is what happened to last week's chart-topper - "Jerusalema"... It's not even in the Top 20 anymore! It has fallen all the way down to number 22!
And "Blinding Lights" by The Weeknd might be the most successful song in MTV Europe's European chart EVER. It reached number 1 in February... 10 months later, in the last edition of the chart for the year 2020, "Blinding Lights" is at number 2!?...

Once again MTV Europe broadcast a special edition of the chart - for the whole year 2020! They didn't broadcast it during the last week of 2020 but during the first week of 2021.
This must be the strangest special edition of MTV Europe's European chart EVER. There are many questionable inclusions. "TKN" by Rosalia and Travis Scott and "Be Kind" by Marshmello and Halsey didn't even reach the Top 20 of this chart during the year!
However, the most baffling examples are "Sunday Best" by Surfaces and "Put It All On Me" by Ed Sheeran and Ella Mai. Both of these songs HAVEN'T APPEARED IN THE CHART AT ALL (or at least MTV Europe never played them)!?…
There are also notable omissions - especially songs that reached number 1. Here are the chart-toppers from 2020 which weren't included in this edition: "Don't Start Now" by Dua Lipa; "Yummy" by Justin Bieber; "Stupid Love" by Lady GaGa; "Physical" by Dua Lipa; "Roses" by SAINt JHN; "Times Like These" by Live Lounge Allstars; "ily" by Surf Mesa (which spent a total of 4 weeks at the top of the chart); "What's Love Got To Do With It" by Kygo and Tina Turner (which also spent a total of 4 weeks at the top of the chart); "Positions" by Ariana Grande; and "Prisoner" by Miley Cyrus and Dua Lipa.

Is this the first time we have a year end chart in a few years?

No, there were also year-end charts for 2017, 2018 and 2019.
