just a hypothetical, how different would the list of #1s look and why.

Rag'n'Bone Man - Human (2 weeks) [timed perfectly for the first week of the year to get in on the post-Christmas sales collapse and get an easy #1]
Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You (4 weeks) [as the fake version rockets up iTunes and is top ten in the midweek chart, the label rush-releases this halfway through the week, to the annoyance of Jax Jones who released the same week and was hoping to have an easy #1 with 'You Don't Know Me']
Ed Sheeran - Castle On The Hill (2 weeks) [in this alternate universe Ed doesn't release these two at the same time, and instead waits for Shape Of You to die down a bit to get this to #1 which he clearly wanted to happen]
Ed Sheeran - Shape Of You (3 weeks) [of course, this eventually re-overtakes]
The Chainsmokers & Coldplay - Something Just Like This (2 weeks) [waiting until the week after his album they release this to an easy #1]
Martin Jensen - Solo Dance (1 week) [on low sales and only due to its pre-orders]
Kygo & Selena Gomez - It Ain't Me (1 week)
Ed Sheeran - Galway Girl (2 weeks) [in a few quiet weesk this gets in at the top, despite competition from Calvin Harris 'Slide']
Clean Bandit feat Zara - Symphony (3 weeks)
Harry Styles - Sign Of The Times (1 week) [with a spectacular fall the following week]
Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat Bieber - Despacito (5 weeks) [rush-released due to proper demand, first week sales of about 200k, denying DJ Khaled]
Artists For Grenfell - Bridge Over Troubled Water (1 week) [because it would be even more obvious of a #1 back in the day]
Liam Payne feat Quavo - Strip That Down (2 weeks)
Rita Ora - Your Song (1 week)
David Guetta feat Bieber - 2U (1 week) [low sales week and cos Bieber]
DJ Khaled feat Rihanna/Tiller - Wild Thoughts (1 week)
Calvin Harris feat Williams/Perry/Sean - Feels (2 weeks)
DJ Khaled feat Rihanna/Tiller - Wild Thoughts (1 week) [low sales and Feels is falling faster than Wild Thoughts]
Dua Lipa - New Rules (4 weeks)
Taylor Swift - Look What You Made Me Do (1 week) [rush released alongside 'Ready For It' as a promo single]
P!nk - What About Us (1 week)
Justin Bieber & Bloodpop - Friends (1 week)
Camila Cabello feat Young Thug - Havana (2 weeks)
Sam Smith - Too Good At Goodbyes (2 weeks)
Marshmello feat Khalid - Silence (1 week)
Post Malone feat 21 Savage - rockstar (3 weeks)
Rita Ora - Anywhere (2 weeks)
Rak-Su feat Wyclef/Naughty Boy - Dimelo (1 week)
Ed Sheeran - Perfect (4 weeks)

(2018)
Eminem feat Ed Sheeran - River (2 weeks)
Ramz - Barking (2 weeks)
Drake - God's Plan (??)

You're saying pre-OA/OS AND pre-streaming? If so I don't think Sign Of The Times would have a spectacular fall from #1, it had a very respectable run on the sales chart and I can't see that changing in a held-back situation. Plus its 2nd week would be fine if it was also Harry's album release week.

Anyway I'm being nitpicky, that's a good list. I'd be willing to predict the likes of Sigala, Rudimental, CNCO, even Demi Lovato getting a week at #1 if they really picked the right release week.

This is presumably wayyy off since I'm not good at predicting stuff like this but assuming the sales climate is similar to 2012 or so I'd guess 2016 and 2017 would go something like this (note I just looked at the list of top 10 singles in '16-'17 to pick these lol so release dates would probably differ a lot IRL)

2016
01 Coldplay - "Adventure of a Lifetime" (1 week in 2016)
02 Shawn Mendes - "Stitches" (3 weeks)
03 Jonas Blue ft Dakota - "Fast Car" (1 week)
04 Zayn - "Pillowtalk" (1 week)
05 Lukas Graham - "7 Years" (2 weeks)
06 Zara Larsson - "Lush Life" (2 weeks)
07 Mike Posner - "I Took A Pill In Ibiza" (2 weeks)
08 Fifth Harmony - "Work From Home" (1 week)
09 Sia ft Sean Paul - "Cheap Thrills" (3 weeks)
10 Drake - "One Dance" (2 weeks)
11 Prince & The Revolution - "Purple Rain" (1 week)
12 Calvin Harris & Rihanna - "This Is What You Came For" (1 week)
13 Justin Timberlake - "Can't Stop The Feeling" (5 n/c weeks)
14 Clean Bandit ft Louisa Johnson - "Tears" (1 week)
15 Calum Scott - "Dancing On My Own" (2 weeks)
16 Jonas BLue ft JP Cooper - "Perfect Strangers" (1 week)
17 Shawn Mendes - "Treat You Better" (1 week)
18 Major Lazer ft Justin Bieber & MŘ - "Cold Water" (2 weeks)
19 DJ Snake ft Justin Bieber - "Let Me Love You" (1 week)
20 The Chainsmokers ft Halsey - "Closer" (3 weeks)
21 Sia ft Kendrick Lamar - "The Greatest" (1 week)
22 James Arthur - "Say You Won't Let Go" (1 week)*
23 The Weeknd - "Starboy" (1 week)*

28 Rag'N'Bone Man - "Human" (3 n/c weeks in 2016)
29 Steve Aoki & Louis Tomlinson - "Just Hold On" (1 week)
30 Wham! - "Last Christmas" (1 week)

* I can also imagine James Arthur staying on top for 4 weeks blocking Starboy, This Town and 24K Magic.

Steps come to mind tongue.gif Also Little Mix [Touch] could’ve gone #1 in those conditions if released before or with their album. Shawn Mendes too
