Top 40 Christmas Chart Commentary

As I've been listening to just about nothing but Christmas songs this week, the chart is looking certainly more festive than usual, even for this time of year . Which means for the first time in the history of Thermo's Hot Hits... we have a Christmas song at #1! It was a close battle between Hurts and Leona Lewis all week but I can reveal that this year's Christmas Number One is...

HURTS with ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS NEW YEAR'S DAY

The song previously peaked at #7 last year but this week it jumps straight to #1 giving Hurts their first number one hit. Leona Lewis climbs to #2 with 'One More Sleep', a new peak for her as the song continues to peak every year, maybe next year is her year? At numbers three and four we have 'Last Christmas' performed by Wham! and Cascada respectively, and at #5 is the newest Christmas song of the chart, Matt Terry's X Factor single 'When Christmas Comes Around'.

The Pogues make their yearly appearance in the top 10 at #6. The Waitresses climb to #7, Andy Williams re-peaks at #8 and Shakin' Stevens enters the top 10 at #9. The only non-festive song in the top 10 is 'Rockabye' by Clean Bandit, last week's #4 down to #10 this week but a strong contender for next week's #1.

Last week's #1, 'Extreme' takes a dive to #16, although it would be #2 without the festive songs. Climbers and entries outside of the top 10 include songs by Chris Rea, Band Aid, Michael Bublé, Mariah Carey, Boney M, Greg Lake, Pretenders, Paul McCartney... and those are just the top 20 entries. Perhaps I should make the Christmas songs ineligible next year because this chart is so messy oops .
