Bjork was our twelfth voter and is revealed to be the one behind DJ Shadow! He is a legendary name in trip-hop and is also known for being part of UNKLE until 1999. 'Building Steam with a Grain of Salt' is taken from Shadow's debut album Endtroducing..... from 1996 which was met with critical acclaim and achieved a top 20 peak in the UK. The song 'Building Steam with a Grain of Salt' centres around a looped piano line which is sampled from 'I Feel a New Shadow' by Jeremy Storch. It also includes interview clips from drummer George Marsh, a women's choir, a funk guitar and much more.

Bjork is doing very well at the moment in 3rd place. Albeit he performs a foot shoot as The Chemical Brothers have usurped into 2nd place off the back of these votes, thanks to 10 points coming their way. The gold medal for Morcheeba ties them with Slacker in 10th place currently. Electribe 101 are back in the top 10 now thanks to 8 points in these votes. POiSON GiRL FRiEND rises to 4th and The Future Sound Of London's lead at the top is cut down to 8 points, despite a solid 6 points from Bjork.

The DJ Shadow song was another one that I feel like I may have heard somewhere before as it sounded a little familiar but a tune nonetheless.

Thank you very much!

SCOREBOARD

1 81 The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea

4 60 LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) (awardinary)

16 11 Isao Tomita - Mars (Suedehead2)
17 7 Flowchart - Another Word Explodes (Brer)
18 0 Alpha - Back (Jester)

Dobbo is up next with one of our older entries! 'Rain In The South' dates back to 1989 as part of the Swedish group's In Fact album. They describe their synth-pop sound as "always dark and sad, but always with a nice melody". This was apparently plucked out of obscurity to feature in the Brazilian Netflix show Boca a Boca (or 'Kissing Game').

Dobbo's gold medal to Slacker strengthens his power in the top 10 as he climbs 3 places and reaches 50 points in the process. The silver for LFO puts them back in the top 5, now in 4th place. 8 points for The Future Sound Of London strengthens their lead to 16 points. Could it be a done deal soon or will later voters change everything? Finally, William Orbit re-enters the top 10 thanks to a 5 point boost, kicking Dobbo's own entry out of there.

14. King Rollo was behind...

Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1

QUOTE
There was some great electronica music in this contest and I wanted to vote for most of the songs so I have decided only to give points to the songs I didn't know before the contest began.

12pts - Poison Girl Friend - Hardly Ever Smile (Without You)
10 - Slacker - Your Face (Schizoid)
8 - Vapour Space - Gravitational Arch of 10
7 - Isao Tomita - Mars
6 - DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt
5 - Flowchart - Another Word Explodes
4 - The Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Entry)
3 - Art Fact - Rain In The South
2 - Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L.
1 - William Orbit - Water from a Vine Leaf

SCOREBOARD

1 81 The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea
2 68 DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt (Bjork)
3 66 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - HARDLY EVER SMILE (without you) (Ansel)
4 65 The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel
5 61 Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L. (jimwatts)
6 60 LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) (awardinary)
7 60 Slacker - Your Face (Schizoid)
8 45 Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1 (King Rollo)
9 44 Art Fact - Rain In The South (Dobbo)
10 43 Electribe 101 - Talking With Myself

11 43 William Orbit - Water from a Vine Leaf (Chez Wombat)
12 43 Vapour Space - Gravitational Arch of 10 (Jade)
13 39 Morcheeba - Trigger Hippie (lewistgreen)
14 34 The Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Entry) (AH Gold)
15 30 Boards of Canada - Roygbiv
16 18 Isao Tomita - Mars (Suedehead2)
17 12 Flowchart - Another Word Explodes (Brer)
18 0 Alpha - Back (Jester)

King Rollo is, unsurprisingly, behind one of our longest entries. French producer Jean-Michel Jarre is a pioneer in the world of electronic music, particularly leaning into ambience. He achieved twelve top 75 entries in the U.K. chart between the impressive span of 1977 and 2000. His biggest hit is the futuristic 'Oxygene Part IV', which peaked at #4. 'Ethnicolor 1' is another one of our oldest entries as it is taken from his 1984 record Zoolook - this was already his seventh studio album!

Rollo's votes decide to favour discoveries so he snubs our current leader and cuts down the gap to 13 points, with DJ Shadow now back in 2nd place. A gold medal for POiSON GiRL FRiEND puts Ansel as high as third place on the leaderboard at the moment. Slacker gains 10 points and Vapour Space take home another 8, putting him in a three-way tie for 10th place alongside Electribe 101 and William Orbit. Rollo's own entry is doing well at the moment, in 8th place. Flowchart now breaks into double figures, however Alpha are still yet to score a point - could that change soon?

Art Fact was quite a unique sounding one iirc, snuck into my points.

Oops unless I have some major love from the last minute voters looks safe to assume I am going to be bottom 3 again laugh.gif ah well, maybe third time lucky...

Highest points to date again there, thanks Rollo (although still falling further behind in 2nd from last as you gave even more points to 'Mars' laugh.gif) The Jean-Michel Jarre song was 12th for me, I just thought it took a bit too long to get going iirc but still some great sounding parts of it.

15. dandy* was behind...

The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel

QUOTE
Hi Jade! Here are my votes. It took a lot of debating to get this order and I'm still not at all sure that everything is in the right place, I feel like on another day it could be completely different but that's just a reflection of how strong the contest was.

12 Vapour Space - Gravitational Arch of 10 - a great discovery from this contest, it's probably not quite the best one but it had to get top marks for not being one I already knew and one I'll definitely be listening to regularly from here on in
10 Slacker - Your Face (Schizoid) - I did know this one but haven't thought about it since the 90s so it got marked up for being a great reminder
08 DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt - an essential track from one of the best albums ever
07 The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea - another 10/10 classic.
06 Boards of Canada - Roygbiv - a classic from another amazing album
05 LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) - great slice of rave, a defining track of the early 90s
04 Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L. - from one of my favourite 90s dance albums, great choice
03 The Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Entry) - another 90s classic
02 William Orbit - Water from a Vine Leaf - I did already know this but it had never clicked with me as much as it did in this contest, so thank you for reminding me of it
01 Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1 - an interesting journey of a track, just about bagged the final point

00 Morcheeba - Trigger Hippie - great track and sorry I couldn't find room for it, from their better years before they went quite mainstream with their sound

I genuinely liked all of the other tracks too so well done everyone who submitted, I'm keeping them all as the basis of an electronica playlist wub.gif

SCOREBOARD

1 88 The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea
2 76 DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt (Bjork)
3 70 Slacker - Your Face (Schizoid)
4 66 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - HARDLY EVER SMILE (without you) (Ansel)
5 65 The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel (dandy*)
6 65 Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L. (jimwatts)
7 65 LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) (awardinary)
8 55 Vapour Space - Gravitational Arch of 10 (Jade)
9 46 Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1 (King Rollo)
10 45 William Orbit - Water from a Vine Leaf (Chez Wombat)

11 44 Art Fact - Rain In The South (Dobbo)
12 43 Electribe 101 - Talking With Myself
13 39 Morcheeba - Trigger Hippie (lewistgreen)
14 37 The Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Entry) (AH Gold)
15 36 Boards of Canada - Roygbiv
16 18 Isao Tomita - Mars (Suedehead2)
17 12 Flowchart - Another Word Explodes (Brer)
18 0 Alpha - Back (Jester)

I received two mod votes in a row and these are the last, as Popchartfreak unfortunately had to drop out before the voting thread went up. dandy* was behind 'The Private Psychedelic Reel' by The Chemical Brothers, a big beat stomper. This is taken from their iconic #1 album Dig Your Own Hole from 1997. Like 'Setting Sun', I can also hear some Beatles influence on this one, which makes sense with 'psychedelic' in the title.

dandy* awards his top marks to yours truly in his beautifully detailed votes, which puts Vapour Space back in the top 10. His silver medal goes to Slacker (oops that his top 2 are the only ones not on streaming) which now advances 'Your Face (Schizoid)' up to 3rd place! This means we do not know the identity of two of the entrants in the top 3 at the moment. The other of these is the poster behind The Future Sound Of London, whose lead has been slightly cut to 12 points now. DJ Shadow slots in the middle of these two thanks to a generous 8 point boost. Dandy's own entry is currently part of a 3-way tie for fifth place.

Already very well familiar with 'The Private Psychedelic Reel' but had to give it my 12 anyway. Hope it proved a good discovery to some others.

I voted for all of the current top 8 so should be heading for a winner I approve of x Judging by the SyncTube reaction 'Papua New Guinea' isn't as well-known a song as I thought it was so I won't grumble too much about cheapness if it does win kink.gif

The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea

QUOTE
Hi Jade, sorry for leaving this so late but here are my votes.

12. Vapour Space - Gravitational Arch of 10
10. The Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Entry)
08. Slacker - Your Face (Schizoid)
07. Art Fact - Rain In The South
06. Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L.
05. Morcheeba - Trigger Hippie
04. The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel
03. Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1
02. LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix)
01. DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt

SCOREBOARD

1 88 The Future Sound Of London - Papua New Guinea (Addy!)
2 78 Slacker - Your Face (Schizoid)
3 77 DJ Shadow - Building Steam with a Grain of Salt (Bjork)
4 71 Orbital - P.E.T.R.O.L. (jimwatts)
5 69 The Chemical Brothers - The Private Psychedelic Reel (dandy*)
6 67 LFO - LFO (Leeds Warehouse Mix) (awardinary)
7 67 Vapour Space - Gravitational Arch of 10 (Jade)
8 66 POiSON GiRL FRiEND - HARDLY EVER SMILE (without you) (Ansel)
9 51 Art Fact - Rain In The South (Dobbo)
10 49 Jean-Michel Jarre - Ethnicolor 1 (King Rollo)

11 47 The Sabres Of Paradise - Smokebelch II (Entry) (AH Gold)
12 45 William Orbit - Water from a Vine Leaf (Chez Wombat)
13 44 Morcheeba - Trigger Hippie (lewistgreen)
14 43 Electribe 101 - Talking With Myself
15 36 Boards of Canada - Roygbiv
16 18 Isao Tomita - Mars (Suedehead2)
17 12 Flowchart - Another Word Explodes (Brer)
18 0 Alpha - Back (Jester)

So it is Addy! who is behind our current leader from The Future Sound Of London! They are a British duo who achieved 7 top 40 hits between 1992 and 2001. 'Papua New Guinea' peaked at #22 and later hit the charts again as 'Papua New Guinea 2001', this time reaching #28. This is a breakbeat techno song that is looked back on fondly by critics, even placing in Pitchfork's 'Top 200 singles from the 1990s' list. The track samples the bassline from 'Radio Babylon' by Meat Beat Manifesto, plus the vocal from 'Dawn of the Iconoclast' by Dead Can Dance.

Addy! avoids a foot-shoot moment and remains in 1st place with a 10 point lead. His bronze medal for 'Your Face (Schizoid)' puts that as the closest challenger at the moment. His 12 goes to my entry, which now has the joint most gold medals (3) alongside Addy's own song and Ansel's. As a result, Vapour Space is now tied in 6th place with LFO, whose points are also topped up here. The Sabres Of Paradise are within touching distance of the top 10 thanks to a silver medal. Art Fact are back in the top 10 after these votes.

happy to give 12 to the host...that was amazing discovery Jade.

And just to clear the air that I was aware of Papua New Guinea chart position in UK after I researched but as someone who didn't grow up nor ever lived in UK, it was such a great discovery that I couldn't resist not send it. Thank you everyone so far for the votes and let's see if it holds up till the end!!!

Dan is behind Slacker aka British electronic producer Shem McCauley! He achieved two top 40 hits including 'Your Face (Schizoid)', which reached #33 in the chart back in 1997. McCauley also lent his talents to other artists, including a remix of the huge 'Smack My Bitch Up' by The Prodigy. He sadly passed away in 2012.

Dan performs a bit of a foot shoot here but is still doing incredibly well. He slides from 2nd place to 3rd, as his 7 points for DJ Shadow push that entry ahead. He also provides a bronze medal for our current leaders The Future Sound Of London, who are 12 points ahead. His gold medal ensures that William Orbit is back in the top 10. My own entry keeps on building momentum at this late stage as a silver medal allows Vapour Space to advance to 4th place.

So it is Colm who sent the shortest entry of the contest! Scottish duo Boards of Canada are a well-loved name in the electronic, downtempo world. 'Roygbiv' (Richard of York Gave Battle in Vain, anyone? all rainbow mnemonic interpretations welcomed) is taken from their debut album Music Has the Right to Children, released in 1998. The record was met with a lot of acclaim and went on to inspire many other artists including the likes of Lone, Four Tet and Gold Panda. Naturally, I loved this answer as to why the song was so short, from member Marcus Eoin:

QUOTE
Someone criticized me once, and asked why we’d made ‘Roygbiv’ so short. For us, that is exactly how long it should be. It’s like that famous bit at the end of ‘Strawberry Fields’ by The Beatles, where you get the little voice at the end that says something like ‘I buried Paul,’ and it happens once, and it’s such a transitory thing that’s mixed in one ear really far away, but people went on and on about it for decades.

Colm's 6 points to The Future Sound Of London and 5 to their closest competitor, DJ Shadow, ensure that the former now has an unassailable lead. So a huge congratulations to Addy! who I pass my baton over to cheer.gif we're not quite done yet, though and changes elsewhere are still happening. The gold medal for Orbital puts 'P.E.T.R.O.L.' back in a podium position when it matters most. 10 points for LFO also sends them back into the top 5. The Chemical Brothers receive the bronze here but remain static position-wise, while Slacker and Vapour Space take a bit of a hit.
