Kylie Ann Minogue, AO, OBE (/mɪˈnoʊɡ/; born 28 May 1968), often known simply as Kylie, is an Australian-British singer, songwriter and actress. She is the highest-selling female Australian artist of all time and has been recognised with several honorific nicknames, most notably the "Princess of Pop". Minogue has also been known for reinventing herself in music and fashion throughout her career, being referred to as a style icon.

Born and raised in Melbourne, she has worked and lived in the United Kingdom since the 1990s. Minogue achieved recognition starring in the Australian soap opera Neighbours, where she played tomboy mechanic Charlene Robinson. She came to prominence as a recording artist in the late 1980s and released four bubblegum and dance-pop-influenced studio albums produced by Stock Aitken Waterman and released by PWL. By the time she released her fourth album in the early 1990s, she had amassed several top ten singles in the UK and Australia, including "I Should Be So Lucky", "The Loco-Motion", "Hand on Your Heart", "Better the Devil You Know" and "Step Back in Time". Minogue, however, felt alienated and dissatisfied with the little creative control she had over her music. In 1992, she left PWL and signed with Deconstruction Records, where she released Kylie Minogue (1994) and Impossible Princess (1997), both of which received positive reviews from critics, with the latter being often described as her most personal and best work. Returning to more mainstream dance-oriented music, Minogue signed to Parlophone and released her disco-influenced seventh studio album Light Years (2000), which was preceded by lead single "Spinning Around". The follow-up, Fever (2001) became her best-selling album to date and was a breakthrough for Minogue in markets where she had little recognition previously. Its lead single, "Can't Get You Out of My Head" became one of the most successful singles of the 2000s, selling over five million units.

She continued reinventing her image and experimenting with a range of genres on her next albums, which produced successful singles such as "Slow", "2 Hearts" and "All the Lovers". Minogue made her film debut in The Delinquents (1989) and portrayed Cammy in Street Fighter (1994). She has also appeared in the films Moulin Rouge! (2001), Jack & Diane and Holy Motors (2012). In 2014, she appeared as a judge on the third series of The Voice UK and The Voice Australia. Her other ventures include product endorsements, children's books and fashion.

Minogue has sold 70 million records worldwide and has earned numerous awards and accolades, including a Grammy Award, three Brit Awards, 17 ARIA Music Awards, two MTV Europe Music Awards and two MTV Video Music Awards. She has mounted several successful and critically acclaimed concert tours for which she received a Mo Award for Australian Performer of the Year in 2001 and 2003. Minogue was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire in the 2008 New Year Honours for services to Music. She was appointed by the French government as a Chevalier (knight) of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres for her contribution to the enrichment of French culture. In 2005, while Minogue was on her Showgirl: The Greatest Hits Tour, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After treatment, she resumed the tour under the title Showgirl: The Homecoming Tour, which critics viewed as a "triumph". Minogue was awarded an honorary Doctor of Health Science (D.H.Sc.) degree by Anglia Ruskin University for her work in raising awareness for breast cancer. Biography

Zayn Malik is best known as one of the founding members of the boy-band-of-a-generation One Direction. Born Zain Javadd Malik on January 12, 1993 in the working-class town of Bradford in West Yorkshire, England, Zayn honed his vocal talents and stage command at a young age. Growing up as a mixed-race Pakistani-English Muslim in a post-industrial British town presented some difficulties, which resulted in a number of primary school changes. His talents were eventually fostered at Tong High School, where he delved into performing arts and stage production, even starring as Danny Zuko in the school's production of Grease. In 2010, he auditioned for The X Factor but was eliminated (along with his future One Direction bandmates, who also auditioned solo). The quintet was later brought back as a group and Simon Cowell dubbed them One Direction. Despite finishing in third place, their popularity exploded and would not slow their trajectory until the very end.

After the show, Cowell immediately signed them to his label, Syco Records, kicking off a craze that hadn't been seen since the turn of the millennium with the Backstreet Boys and *NSYNC. From 2011 to 2014, One Direction released an album each year, each one more successful than the last. Their fourth album, Four, would turn out to be the last with Zayn. In March 2015, while the band was on the On the Road Again Tour, Malik abruptly parted ways with One Direction a week after his final appearance with the group in Hong Kong. Citing stress and a desire for a simpler life out of the spotlight, Malik later revealed that he simply wanted to make music that he could listen to and enjoy.

Striking out on his own, he signed with RCA Records and moved to Los Angeles, where he began working on his solo effort with Naughty Boy (Beyoncé, Sam Smith). The two soon parted and Malik turned to Frank Ocean collaborator James "Malay" Ho for production help. His debut single, "Pillowtalk," was released in late January 2016, debuted at number one on the Billboard charts, and featured a distinctly more adult-themed alt-R&B sound, similar to the Weeknd and Miguel. His full-length debut, Mind of Mine, was released in early 2016 and topped the Billboard 200 chart. Late that year, he returned with the single "I Don't Wanna Live Forever," a collaboration with Taylor Swift and Bleachers' Jack Antonoff that appeared on the soundtrack to Fifty Shades Darker. He continued collaborating with other artists into 2017, including PartyNextDoor ("Still Got Time") and Sia ("Dusk 'til Dawn"). By 2018, he began promoting his sophomore solo effort with singles such as "Let Me," the Timbaland-assisted "Too Much," and "No Candle No Light" with Nicki Minaj. Machine Gun Kelly
In an interview with Apple Music about his 2019 album, Hotel Diablo, Machine Gun Kelly described the night he hit bottom. He was in the iamspamspamami his daughter asleep in the next room. “I just had no serotonin in my body left to give me any type of motivation or happiness,” he said. “I realise that I wanted all this”—his circumstance, his art, his life—“to go away.” He didn’t die that night. But he did write a song about trying to (“Glass House”). It’s not an easy listen—at one point, he passes out with blood dripping on the floor. But the same extremes that can make Kelly’s music unsettling have also made him a beacon for his fans, the kind of artist who shines light in the darkest corners of his mind.

Born Richard Colson Baker in 1990, to missionary parents in Houston, Kelly was raised primarily in Cleveland, a city whose atmosphere of crime and post-industrial decay formed a backdrop for his tracks. Drugs, childhood trauma, self-negation: Kelly’s music never offers an easy way out. But as bleak as it can be, there’s a sense of catharsis to it, too, bridging the grit of hip-hop with the melodic quality of pop-punk and nu-metal—the spoonful of sugar that makes Kelly’s bitter pill go down. Is it rap? Is it rock? Nirvana, LINKIN PARK, or Eminem? To Kelly’s generation—including peers like Trippie Redd and the late Juice WRLD—the distinction is antiquated. They’re here for the feeling. Halsey is the alias of New York-based pop singer Ashley Frangipane. The New Jersey native took her moniker from a New York L train subway stop, and her adopted city plays a large role in both the sound and lyrics of her dark, gritty electro-pop. In 2015, she debuted with Badlands, which hit number two on the Billboard 200 chart. Continued success came in 2016, when her featured appearance on the Chainsmokers' "Closer" helped push the single to the top of the charts. Biography

North London rapper Mostack shifted from making music about the streets he was raised on to focusing on deeper personal issues and broader social themes. Mostack first appeared on the scene in 2014, when he released the single "No Buddy" through Link Up TV's YouTube channel. The single quickly caught the attention of U.K. rap fans, leading to a tour in support of Stormzy in late 2015. The following year Mostack dropped his debut mixtape, Gangster with Banter, reaffirming his playful yet serious approach. He spent the rest of 2016 and early 2017 touring and building his fan base. In the summer of 2017, he dropped his second mixtape, High Street Kid, which featured guest spots from J Hus, Mist, Jiggz, and Krept. The following year saw MoStack get to work on his debut LP. Greeted with comparisons to young Michael Jackson and Usher, Chris Brown arrived in 2005 as a squeaky-clean pop-R&B artist with "Run It!," the first debut single by a male artist to top the Billboard Hot 100 in over a decade. While there was nowhere to go but down, at least in terms of chart positions, the singer, dancer, and occasional rapper was only getting started. You don’t get a lot of warning for an artist like Young Thug. From his warped delivery to his radical, gender-fluid fashion sense, the Atlanta rapper (born Jeffery Lamar Williams in 1991) flies in the face of every unspoken rule for what hip-hop is, should, and could be. Starting with a prolific run of mixtapes in the early 2010s, Thug rose by pioneering a weird, ever-shifting flow somewhere between singing, rapping, mumbling and squawking—pushing rap forward by pulling it apart. But the weirdest thing about what he does is that it works: Nearly every project Thug’s released since 2015—from the reggae-inflected JEFFREY to the country-ish sides of Beautiful Thugger Girls—has cracked the mainstream, laying the groundwork for a new crop of fellow eccentrics like Lil Uzi Vert and Playboi Carti. In other words, Thug hasn’t adjusted to convention but brought convention to him. AJ Tracey
West London grime MC Che Wolton Grant (aka AJ Tracey) rose through the ranks of pirate radio, becoming one of the leading figures in U.K. grime's second generation of artists. Grant knew from a young age that he wanted to pursue a career in music, due in part to his parents; not only was his dad a former rapper from Trinidad & Tobago, his mother was a former drum'n'bass DJ from Wales. By age six, Grant had started writing rhymes, coinciding with the first great boom in grime. Although the genre temporarily lost its way, Grant soldiered on, unwilling to give up on his passion for grime. By the time he had reached his early twenties, grime had started another upswing. During this time Grant became proactive in his pursuit of radio spots, working his way up through pirate radio before scoring appearances on Rinse.DM, NTS, and eventually even BBC Radio One.

With his reputation in the world of radio firmly cemented, Grant released a string of EPs, beginning with The Front EP in July 2015, followed by the Alex Moran EP later the same year. In 2016, he further solidified his status as an emerging talent, with a combination of solid collaborations, more radio appearances, and the release of the Lil Tracey EP. The end of 2016 culminated with Grant's nomination yo BBC's Sound of 2017. That year saw him release a handful of EPs and singles including Secure the Bag and "False 9," as well as dabbling in production on "LA4AWeek." The following year Tracey delivered his first U.K. Top 20 single, "Butterflies," followed by the Top 40 single "Lo(v/s)er." Alongside the release of the singles, Tracey also worked on his debut album. Mabel
Mabel Alabama-Pearl McVey (born 20 February 1996) is an English singer and songwriter. In 2017, she had her mainstream breakthrough with "Finders Keepers", peaking at number eight on the UK Singles Chart. Her debut studio album, High Expectations, was released in August 2019 and entered the UK Albums Chart at number three. It spawned the UK top-10 singles "Don't Call Me Up" and "Mad Love". Biography

London-based, American-born rapper and singer Ashnikko makes genre-bending hip-hop and electronic pop, marked by her hyper-stylized, anime- and video game-influenced persona. Following two initial EPs, she gained widespread viral buzz with her song "Stupid," featuring Yung Baby Tate, off 2019's Hi It's Me.

Born Ashton Nicole Casey in 1996 in Oak Ridge, North Carolina, Ashnikko grew up in Greensboro. She discovered rap around age 11, listening to M.I.A. It was during this period that she began making her own music, influenced by artists like Nicki Minaj, Björk, and other artists. In 2019, Ashnikko returned with the five-track EP Hi It's Me, which featured the song "Stupid" with Yung Baby Tate. The track and video went viral on several platforms, helping it reach number one on both the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart and Bubbling Under R&B/Hip-Hop chart. Machine Gun Kelly
In an interview with Apple Music about his 2019 album, Hotel Diablo, Machine Gun Kelly described the night he hit bottom. He was in the iamspamspamami his daughter asleep in the next room. “I just had no serotonin in my body left to give me any type of motivation or happiness,” he said. “I realise that I wanted all this”—his circumstance, his art, his life—“to go away.” He didn’t die that night. But he did write a song about trying to (“Glass House”). It’s not an easy listen—at one point, he passes out with blood dripping on the floor. But the same extremes that can make Kelly’s music unsettling have also made him a beacon for his fans, the kind of artist who shines light in the darkest corners of his mind.

Born Richard Colson Baker in 1990, to missionary parents in Houston, Kelly was raised primarily in Cleveland, a city whose atmosphere of crime and post-industrial decay formed a backdrop for his tracks. Drugs, childhood trauma, self-negation: Kelly’s music never offers an easy way out. But as bleak as it can be, there’s a sense of catharsis to it, too, bridging the grit of hip-hop with the melodic quality of pop-punk and nu-metal—the spoonful of sugar that makes Kelly’s bitter pill go down. A native of Los Angeles' Hollywood region, Blackbear -- born Matthew Musto -- was known as a fledgling rock-leaning singer/songwriter until he co-wrote Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend," a number two hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in 2012. Around the same time, he reinvented himself as a rapper and more R&B-oriented singer through the self-released Sex, on which he was joined by fellow "Boyfriend" co-writer Mike Posner, along with James Blake and Maejor Ali. Biography

The London-based electronic outfit Rudimental originally started out in 2009 as the production duo Piers Agget and Kesi Dryden. Years later, they made their debut as artists with their U.K. number one single "Feel the Love." Agget's DJ'ing brought him into contact with DJ Locksmith, who joined the pair, followed later by a chance meeting with Amir Amor at a studio in Hoxton, London. Rudimental's first release, 2011's dancehall-inspired "Deep in the Valley," appeared on garage, grime, and dubstep label Black Butter and was quickly followed by "Speeding" and "Spoons." Picked up by Asylum Records/Warner Music off the back of their first few singles, 2012 saw the release of the drum'n'bass roller "Feel the Love." Championed by Zane Lowe on BBC Radio 1, the single reached the top of the U.K. charts the same weekend as the four-piece played on their home turf at the Radio 1 2012 Hackney Weekender. In 2013, Rudimental's debut album Home arrived. Working with some of the U.K.'s finest talent, including the voice of 2012 Emeli Sandé, the album's mix of dubstep, R&B, house, and drum'n'bass received positive reviews and went straight to the number one spot on the U.K. album chart. Hit singles from the album continued into 2014, including the U.K. number one "Waiting All Night," which won a BRIT Award for Best British Single. Rudimental scored another big hit in 2015 with the Ed Sheeran collaboration "Bloodstream," and geared up for the release of their second full-length, We the Generation, which included collaborations with Dizzee Rascal, Anne-Marie, MNEK, Lianne La Havas, Bobby Womack, and several others. The second Sheeran feature on the album, "Lay It All on Me," became the duo's first U.S.-charting song and their eighth U.K. Top 40 track. The song also went platinum in Australia, Denmark, Italy, New Zealand, and the U.K. They closed 2017 by recruiting James Arthur for the single "Sun Comes Up." The following year, Rudimental issued a handful of high-profile collaborations, including "Let Me Live" with Major Lazer, Anne-Marie, and Mr. Eazi; "Walk Alone" with Tom Walker; "Summer Love" with Rita Ora; and the multi-platinum, chart-topping "These Days" with Jess Glynne, Macklemore, and Dan Caplen. Biography

Khaled Mohamed Khaled (born November 26, 1975), better known by his stage name DJ Khaled, is an American DJ, record executive, songwriter, record producer, and media personality. Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Khaled first gained prominence as a radio host in the 1990s on Miami hip hop station 99 Jamz. His popularity later prompted hip hop group Terror Squad to hire Khaled as the DJ for their live performances. After gaining some production credits on the group's material, Khaled then transitioned into curating albums, releasing his debut studio album Listennn... the Album in 2006, which earned gold certification.

He followed that up with the album We the Best (2007), which contained the top 20 single "I'm So Hood". His subsequent two releases — We Global (2008) and Victory (2010) — were released after the founding of Khaled's record label We the Best Music Group. Both albums charted within the top ten on the US Billboard 200, with the latter containing the single "All I Do Is Win", which was eventually certified triple platinum.

His fifth studio album We the Best Forever (2011) also saw similar commercial success, and helped bring Khaled to international prominence, as it featured the song "I'm on One", which became his first top ten hit. His sixth and seventh album, Kiss the Ring (2012) and Suffering from Success (2013), charted in the top ten on the Billboard 200, and his eighth studio album, I Changed a Lot (2015), peaked at number 12.

In 2015 and early 2016, Khaled gained worldwide attention as a media personality, and subsequently attained a large following on social media. This foresaw the release of his ninth studio album Major Key in 2016. The album attained wholesale critical and commercial success; it debuted atop the Billboard 200, it was certified gold, and received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album. He released his tenth studio album, Grateful, in 2017, which contained the singles "I'm the One" and "Wild Thoughts", which charted at number one and number two on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, and was also certified platinum. His eleventh album, Father of Asahd, was released in 2019; it peaked at number two on the Billboard 200. The song from the album, "Higher" featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend won Best Rap/Sung Performance at the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards, Khaled's first Grammy award win.

Biography

Travis Scott has helped define the sound and feel of 2010s rap, imbuing tough, surrealistic trap with a distinctly pop appeal. Raised in the suburbs of Houston, Scott (born Jacques Berman Webster II in 1992) first made noise as an in-house producer for Kanye West’s G.O.O.D. Music, working on the 2012 label showcase Cruel Summer and 2013’s Yeezus, which arrived mere weeks after he dropped his debut mixtape, Owl Pharaoh. He went on to bring his gothic-edged sound to Drake, Migos, Madonna, and Rihanna (“Bitch Better Have My Money”), while his own solo albums—2015’s Rodeo and 2016’s Birds in the Trap Sing McKnight—playfully drew the commercial center of rap toward the avant-garde. Take 2018’s ASTROWORLD, a swirling, almost psychedelic set that not only managed to pull together Quavo, John Mayer, Tame Impala, and Sheck Wes on the same album, but also had them gel—a testament to Scott’s vision as an artist and superlative curator. Nobody makes feeling bad sound as good as The Weeknd. Even the singer’s sunniest tracks (“Can’t Feel My Face,” “Starboy”) feel anchored by darkness—the sense that pleasure is pain and beauty decays and you can’t have the night without the morning after. The brainchild of Toronto singer Abel Tesfaye, the project took off in 2011 with a string of mixtapes (later collected as 2012’s Trilogy) that forged cavernous, falsetto-driven R&B with narratives drenched in drugs, sex, and other regrettable decisions—a sound both sensuous and detached, featherlight and dead heavy. One of the earliest musicians to find his footing on the internet, Tesfaye originally offered his music through YouTube and free downloads, a move that felt radical then but is common now. Ethiopian by heritage (his parents immigrated to Canada in the late ’80s, just before he was born), Tesfaye—out from behind the mask of making art online—has since come to represent the changing face of Toronto, rooting himself not just in an international musical community but in a specific diasporic experience. Like the work of collaborator Lana Del Rey or early booster (and fellow Toronto native) Drake, Tesfaye’s music has become a symbol of hedonism pushed to bleak excess, with a series of albums—including 2015’s Grammy-winning Beauty Behind the Madness, 2016’s multiplatinum Starboy, and 2020’s dense and atmospheric After Hours—whose narrators can’t seem to say no even if they hate themselves for it later. And though his music has gotten a little brighter over time, the prevailing mood remains heavy, even unsettling—the ride you want more of even when you’ve had too much. Speaking to Apple Music about the persona behind his songs, Tesfaye said, “I’m a chill person. That guy is who I am, but it is who I am to myself and in my writing. Sometimes you take him and then you create more, and then it becomes this beast. You add more to him, and then it’s uncontrollable—its own character. Biography

Distinctively emotive, soul-inspired vocalist Sam Smith has been among the most commercially successful artists to arrive during the early 2010s. Prior to their breakthrough at the age of 21, the London-born singer and songwriter balanced their studies and music, sang in choirs and in bands, and performed in musical theater productions. They developed a passionate approach to singing exemplified by their favorite artists at that time: Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and Chaka Khan. They were barely out of their teens when, in late 2012, they appeared as the featured vocalist on "Latch," the fourth single by production duo Disclosure. A loping mixture of U.K. garage and contemporary dance-pop, the song went to number 11 in the U.K. Over in the U.S., it took significantly longer to take hold, but eventually hit number seven there and was certified platinum three times over.

The singer's debut solo single, released in February 2013, took a more tempered path. Produced by the favor-returning Disclosure, "Lay Me Down" recalled the stripped-back material that had proved successful for Adele. Only three months later, producer/songwriter Shahid "Naughty Boy" Khan followed his Emeli Sandé-fronted U.K. Top Ten hit "Wonder" with "La La La," featuring a powerful lead vocal from Smith (who had just finished a series of dates in support of Sandé). It was an instant number one U.K. hit. In October 2013, Smith issued the Nirvana EP, which included an acoustic reading of "Latch," and by the end of February 2014 they were back at the top of the U.K. chart with "Money on My Mind," which inventively married their relaxed vocal with a frenetic beat. Smith's debut full-length, In the Lonely Hour, was released that May in the U.K., and topped the album chart. It arrived in the U.S. the following month and peaked at number two there. The singles "Stay with Me," "I'm Not the Only One," and "Lay Me Down" hit the Top Ten in both the U.K. and U.S. In the Lonely Hour led to awards from organizations as varied as the BRITs, the Grammys, Billboard, and BET. It was the second best-selling album of 2014 in the U.K. and U.S., behind only titles by Ed Sheeran and Taylor Swift.

In 2015, Smith recorded another Disclosure collaboration, "Omen," eventually placed on the duo's Caracal. Smith also earned the honor of being chosen to record the theme for a James Bond film. "Writing's on the Wall," recorded for the Spectre soundtrack, was the first Bond theme to go to number one in the U.K. An expanded version of In the Lonely Hour, the "Drowning Shadows Edition," was released that November with new material and previously released stray tracks added to the original album content. Following Golden Globe and Academy Award wins for "Writing's on the Wall," Smith spent most of 2016 and early 2017 in the studio recording their follow-up album with previous collaborators Jimmy Napes and Steve Fitzmaurice. "Too Good at Goodbyes," the lead single from their second album, was issued in September 2017. The ballad went to number one in the U.K. and the Top Five in the U.S. just prior to the release of The Thrill of It All the following month. In 2018, they released the single "Fire on Fire" as part of the soundtrack to the BBC and Netflix animated miniseries Watership Down, based on the 1972 Richard Adams novel. East Staffordshire-based producer Nathan Dawe creates club music that draws heavily from garage and R&B.

Born in Burton-upon-Trent in 1994, Dawe began remixing other producers in his early twenties. Although he had begun to make a name for himself, it wasn't until the release of his 2018 single "Cheatin" that his career took off; after releasing the track, Atlantic Records got in touch to sign a deal. Biography

BTS (Korean: 방탄소년단; RR: Bangtan Sonyeondan), also known as the Bangtan Boys, is a seven-member South Korean boy band who began formation in 2010 and debuted in 2013. The septet co-writes and produces much of their output. Originally a hip hop group, their musical style has evolved to include a wide range of genres. Their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work features references to literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternative universe storyline. The group has staged several world tours.

The group initially formed as teenagers under Big Hit Entertainment and released their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool (2013). Subsequent work such as their first U.S. Billboard 200 entries The Most Beautiful Moment in Life, Part 2 (2015), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: Young Forever (2016), and Wings (2016) helped establish BTS' reputation as a socially conscious group. Wings became BTS' first album to sell one million copies in South Korea. Sigala
Sigala is the musical nom de plume of Bruce Fielder, a London-based house DJ, producer, and remixer. Born and raised in Norfolk, England, Fielder began piano as a child, and played in various bands after graduating university. He found work as a producer, and co-wrote Ella Eyre and Sigma's 2015 U.K. hit single "Good Times." His first solo single as Sigala was "Easy Love," an energetic house tune built around a sample of the Jackson 5's iconic hit "ABC." Released by Ministry of Sound, it entered the U.K. singles chart and shot up to number one in its second week. Fielder's second single, "Sweet Lovin'" (featuring singer/songwriter Bryn Christopher), hit number three and was certified gold or platinum in several countries. Several more hits followed in 2016, including "Say You Do" (featuring Imani and DJ Fresh), "Give Me Your Love" (featuring John Newman and Chic's Nile Rodgers), and "Ain't Giving Up," a collaboration with Craig David that appeared on his sixth album, Following My Intuition. In 2017, Sigala co-produced the single "Show You Love" with Danish DJ Kato, sung by Hailee Steinfeld. He then paired with singer Paloma Faith for the 2018 single "Lullaby." James Arthur
James Arthur was the victor of the British X Factor's ninth season in 2012, winning the public vote with a rendition of Shontelle's rousing ballad "Impossible." Born in Middlesbrough, England, Arthur had written and performed in various bands since the age of 15, as well as performing solo in pubs and bars in his hometown. Many of the singer/songwriter's early recordings illustrate the pop/rock and hip-hop influences that helped shape his unique voice and style. Before he appeared on The X Factor, Arthur made it into the final 200 contestants of the U.K.'s The Voice TV series in 2011, without managing to progress any further. A year later, he auditioned for The X Factor, where he sang judge Tulisa Contostavlos' song "Young" and subsequently made it through the boot-camp round and into the live shows.

From then on, Arthur showcased his considerable talents and slowly improved under the watchful eye of mentor Nicole Sherzinger. He was pitted against Jahméne Douglas and Christopher Maloney in the final round of the contest, where he impressed the audience with performances of Cy Grant's "Feeling Good," Bob Dylan's "Make You Feel My Love," and Marvin Gaye's "Let's Get It On." The final song of the evening -- the version of Shontelle's "Impossible" -- was released immediately after Arthur was announced as the winner and made it to number one in the U.K. and Ireland, while also charting across Europe. He then went on tour with the X Factor show, playing across the U.K. in huge, sold-out arenas such as Wembley and the Birmingham LG.

After his X Factor success, Arthur worked alongside singer/songwriter Labrinth and Graham Stack (JLS, Take That, Westlife) in preparation for his debut album. He put out the eponymous release later that year; the album featured "Impossible" and "Roses" (with Emeli Sandé), as well as follow-up singles "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You," "Recovery," and "Get Down." Arthur departed from Syco Music the following year and briefly returned to the scene with an independent release, the rap mixtape All the World's a Stage. The singer/songwriter made a return in 2016, signing a record deal with Columbia and issuing his second full-length effort, Back from the Edge. The stripped-down and reflective record was led by the singles "Say You Won't Let Go" and "Remember Who I Was." Biography

When his life was cut short in the early hours of February 19, 2020, Brooklyn rapper Pop Smoke was, at the age of 20, more famous than he’d ever been, yet nowhere close to where he was likely to end up. He exploded onto the scene in 2019 with “Welcome to the Party,” a song that somehow plays as enticing as it is menacing, exemplifying Brooklyn’s rising drill music scene at its sharpest. His voice across it—gruff and road-worn beyond his age—carries the delivery of a supervillain, daring his adversaries to try and stop the mayhem he has planned for the city.

Pop Smoke was from the far-flung Canarsie neighborhood, and his verses radiate a singular kind of Real Brooklyn energy. (A great deal of his "Welcome to the Party” video takes place in front of the long-standing jerk chicken staple Peppa’s.) His slang (“sturdy,” “dap me up”) was largely New York City-centric, which helped songs like “War,” “Christopher Walking,” and “Dior” reverberate quickly through, and beyond, the five boroughs. Fans worldwide got indoctrinated upon accepting his 2019 debut project’s invitation to Meet the Woo; a sequel, Meet the Woo 2, was released just weeks before his death. Pop Smoke worked well with the stars of his city, nabbing collaborations with Nicki Minaj, Bronx heartthrob A Boogie wit da Hoodie, and fellow ascending voices Lil Tjay and Fivio Foreign. He’d even have no problem setting his own tone on his Travis Scott collaboration “GATTI,” from the JACKBOYS project.
