BuzzJack Music Forum _ Robbie Williams and Take That _ The Band Musical - Winners of Let it Shine

GARY Barlow is going to war with arch-rival Simon Cowell by launching and starring in an X Factor-style talent show.

The Take That superstar’s series is lined up by the BBC to replace The Voice, which is moving to ITV after its current Saturday night run.

His as yet unnamed multi-million pound programme will compete directly with The X Factor — on which he was a judge from 2011 to 2013.

Last night a TV source revealed: “This is Gary’s own format that will be made by the BBC entertainment team.

“If it is a success he could make hundreds of millions of pounds around the world like Cowell has with X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent.

“Cowell is going to be furious because he thinks it was X Factor that gave Gary the experience working on a show like this. Now he’s gone and set up a direct rival.

“He’s always been paranoid about Gary trying to set up a huge entertainment company incorporating music and TV, which seems to be happening.”

The Beeb considered more than 200 ideas for new shows.

Sources close to Gary said he was “very excited” about the project — but still planned to keep his music commitments, including being a full-time member of Take That.

Tbh, if Gary doesn't quit making music, this news makes me extremely happy, cause I'm having serious Barlow withdrawal symptoms right now tongue.gif

Posted by: Bond Bug Feb 20 2016, 09:43 AM

If this goes big, he might be able to use it to break into America. However, it will be hard to create a show as successful as the Voice or X-Factor.

Posted by: milly Feb 20 2016, 09:52 AM

At this point, any show would be more successful than The X Factor tongue.gif

I imagine Gary wants to discover singer-songwriters. That's what I hope the show is about. It would be pointless to have another karaoke style show on tv. People are sick of the XF and The Voice.

Posted by: Kath Feb 21 2016, 10:33 AM

Just what we need for a Saturday night - another talent-free talent show! And no - it isn't my dislike of Barlow that makes me say that - I just can't stand these shows - seriously they should have consigned these kind of things to the bin after Opportunity Knocks and New Faces - they were shite then!

Great publicity for Gary though! And probably Cowell too! All news is good news - even if the product is pants!

Posted by: pippa Feb 22 2016, 04:16 PM

I look forward to discovering the format. It would be wonderful if this comes out very successful.

Posted by: milly Feb 22 2016, 04:44 PM

I agree with you, Kath. I can't stand these shows either - I never look at X Factor or The Voice, not even here in Romania, where the format is relatively new and successful.
My hope is that Gary comes up with something new and different. His record label did go bankrupt after all because he was genuinely interested in investing in real talent, unlike Cowell who drops an artist when the money isn't satisfactory.

Posted by: slowdown73 Feb 22 2016, 05:17 PM

Oh dear. I hate these kinds of shows too. They are very manufactured and lack any real talent.

Posted by: pippa Feb 22 2016, 09:45 PM

I can often enjoy them, i like the X Factor for example but struggle to enjoy The Voice.

Posted by: jay727 Mar 6 2016, 08:54 PM

According to The Sun, this talent show will be all about finding the stars for a Take That musical! So along the lines of the Andrew Lloyd Webber shows.
Will be great publicity for the show if true!

Posted by: Aphrodite Mar 7 2016, 01:41 AM

This sounds like a great idea and would be excellent exposure for the show and their back catalogue.

Posted by: Bond Bug Mar 7 2016, 01:49 AM

Yes, it is a great idea! Can't wait, but I probably won't be able to see it in the states.

Can Cowell be more arrogant and self-absorbed? I live for the day when someone will throw eggs at him again. Well, I'd replace eggs with something else, but I'm trying to be a lady angel.gif

Simon appears to like nothing he is not involved in himself.

More news on new TV show!

Runs for eight weeks and hosted by Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc.

Presumably Gary Barlow is a judge and/or mentor.

This could be a ratings winner and a great opportunity to rebuild a massive audience for the next Take That releases.

Posted by: pippa Jun 22 2016, 06:58 PM

I would be delighted if the show is good and also gets good ratings. If it is a strong show it can do nothing but boost Take That, it is likely the Ultimate Collection would be the first album to get a sales boost.

Posted by: Aphrodite Jun 27 2016, 11:48 PM

It should help expose some of their material again if the show goes well and ya i agree its likely the Ultimate Collection would be the album that could benefit the most.

Posted by: milly Jun 28 2016, 07:49 AM

The show should begin in January 2017.

I'm curious what set of skills they'll be looking for. They have to be careful, cause they can't transform this into a singing contest - the backlash would be terrible.

Posted by: slowdown73 Jun 28 2016, 10:42 AM

I really don't think we need another reality TV music show. The format is boring and stale. They need to move on and start finding musical artists in a more creative way rather than through a tired format.

Posted by: pippa Jun 28 2016, 01:07 PM

If the show has a different format it could be very successful. If it follows the lines of X Factor it could very well struggle.

Not true. Simon Fuller sued Cowell for copying AI and tried to get producer credit on XFUS. The case was settled out of court.

Didn't know that fact, but that only serves to emphasize my point: Cowell is one big hypocrite.

Simon would love to have the monopoly of all kind of power on this planet tongue.gif
Unfortunately for him, after Gary hinted yesterday at the new show's format, Cowboy was left looking a fool biggrin.gif

Posted by: pippa Jul 5 2016, 03:44 PM

Simon Cowell can be so bitter and petty at times. The X Factor was not hugely different from Pop Idol. In this instance pot, kettle and black very much come to mind.

Posted by: jay727 Jul 5 2016, 07:46 PM

And without Gary, XF would have had a lot less viewers!

Posted by: pippa Jul 6 2016, 03:15 PM

I dont know if i fully agree with that. I am a Gary fan but i am undecided if he really fitted well into the show.

Posted by: milly Jul 6 2016, 03:43 PM

The only time I watched X Factor was when Gary was on it. he was hilarious, especially on Xtra Factor. The banter with Johnny Robinson, with Rylan, with Louis and with Nicole was highly entertaining and the contestants put downs were so witty: "To the left, to the left...all the way to the left, please!" laugh.gif Not to mention that Gary is the only judge to ever pet a stuffed owl laugh.gif

Posted by: jay727 Jul 6 2016, 08:30 PM

A lot of polls published said he was the most liked judge in each of the 3 seasons he was on, that's why I say that

Looks like Gary will have a former XF judge taking a spot on the panel! It'll be announced tonight. I reckon it's Danni Minogue...

It is.

I was very disappointed by this choice - and the other 2 (if they get confirmed). I was hoping he'd go with someone with credibility in the business and with a big career behind them.

Posted by: jay727 Sep 14 2016, 06:36 AM

She was good on XF and has a decent amount of experience in productions. I reckon she's a good choice. Interesting to see who the other two judges will be. Filming starts next week so we won't have long to wait...

I just hope Gary made the right choices for his show and he won't regret them later on.

Danushka!!! cheer.gif

Posted by: pippa Sep 14 2016, 02:30 PM

Dannii was a very honest judge on X Factor (with other acts too, outside her own category).I have read that many of her acts are still in touch with her unlike Cheryl who appears to drop them as soon as the show finishes. This presents she is genuine to me and wants the acts to do good for themselves.

Dannii has a lot of experience under her belt as she has had a long career. The biggest problem for Dannii is she is always in Kylie's shadow. With a side she has a lot of industry experience.

Posted by: dylan62 Sep 14 2016, 06:05 PM

I can see the reason for DM inclusion as she was very popular on X Factor. I can't imagine her appointment will have improved Gary and SC relationship smile.gif

MK is an interesting choice. I know his pop and film credentials but I'm unaware of any theatre work. As for the third appointment, I don't know the artist at all. I would have preferred a well known UK theatre artist if I'm honest. I can't believe there wasn't any one suitable. The West End is brimming with top class performers so I'm struggling to see why they chose this lady.

I'm not sure how much power Gary has when it comes to appointments as he doesn't appear to be the producer. I like the two presenters, but they're both 'light weight' so the show is going to be very much mainstream entertainment. I'd hazard a guess that it will follow a similar format to ALW shows on the BBC some years ago.

Posted by: jay727 Sep 14 2016, 07:40 PM

Yeah agreed, Dylan, very much see this going like an 'Any Dream Will Do'/'SuperStar' show. Interesting that the show itself will be called 'The Band'

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 15 2016, 12:57 AM

So happy dannii has joined, was never a fan until she did x factor and I loved her on that and remains my fave judge ever from the show with gary 2nd. I'm really looking forward to the show now more than ever.

Posted by: milly Sep 15 2016, 04:14 AM

How can Gary come 2nd to anyone? tongue.gif

Amber whatshername apparently was on Glee, so Glee fans are probably familiar with her. Anyway, she won't be on the show permanently, just at the beginning.
I hope I warm up to the judges in time; so far, none of them excites me in any way or screams success for the show. I know that Dannii is popular with the XF audience, but I get her as much as I do her sister and, with the other 2 judges, I'm not familiar at all. I wish Gary had brought Josh Groban on board, cause he's got a great personality and a great sense of humour - not to mention an undeniable singing talent.

Posted by: pippa Sep 15 2016, 01:40 PM

Gary needs someone who can be serious but witty and funny, David Williams style on Britain's Got Talent for example. The key for a judging panel is having a strong and varied mix. I firmly believe Dannii is a great addition to the panel. On a general conscientious i prefer Kylie to Danni (musically 100% and personality i slightly prefer Kylie too). That said, as a judge i preferred Dannii if i was to compare Kylie on the Voice and Dannii on X Factor.

Posted by: milly Sep 15 2016, 03:56 PM

Well, I'm more than open to be proven wrong, cause I really want the show to be a success and I want to be able to enjoy the full panel smile.gif

Posted by: pippa Sep 15 2016, 07:08 PM

It would be just wonderful if this turns out to be a huge hit, that said i also want it to be a show that i look forward to each week.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 16 2016, 12:45 AM

Ya i hope its a good show, for myself im getting somewhat tired of some of the reality shows, i was a huge x factor fan but i dont enjoy it nearly as much anymore, the voice i found very hit and miss so im hoping this is a show i will be excited about watching and really get behind the contestants. I am looking forward to hearing some new renditions of some Take That songs too.

I hope Howard and Mark are involved a fair bit throughout the process as well.

Posted by: milly Sep 16 2016, 06:09 AM

Gary has said that all of them have been involved in this new show - who knows, maybe we'll get to see Mark and Howard as guest judges.

I'm curious what TT songs they'll be using. They have 8 live shows after all - and if they get at least 5 bands and one song/band/show, that means we should be hearing at least 40 TT songs - they'll have no choice but to go beyond the obvious hits - at least that's what I'm hoping smile.gif

Posted by: pippa Sep 16 2016, 02:08 PM

I would believe they will have a week where acts will have to sing Take That album tracks only and not just singles (maybe that's wishful thinking on my side). It be be an interesting watch to see how the contestants will song the songs or what style they will sing them in. If the show performs strongly in the ratings i would like to think we will at the least see The Ultimate Collection make a return to the charts and hopefully some Take That songs getting downloads on itunes.

Ideally and again extremely wishful thinking, the show will have good ratings and a contestant will perform Gary's Lie To Me and as a result it turns into the surprise hit of the year huh.gif and become a big hit like it truly deserves.

That would be my dream smile.gif
But they'll probably stick to only TT songs. Even so, I'd love it if one of their tracks made such an impact that it would chart and become a hit, after all those years.
I soooo hope someone sings Will You Be There for Me, Coming Home, Flaws, Holding Back the Tears and Another Crack. And You and Trouble and Sleepwalking and Butterfly and Higher than Higher and Fall Down at Your Feet and Freeze and Don't Say Goodbye and Like I Never Loved You At All and She Said and Pretty Things....I'm really dreaming here laugh.gif

Posted by: pippa Sep 16 2016, 05:46 PM

Eight Letters, Hold Up A Light, Reach Out, Holding Back the Tears and possibly Julie. It would ideally be one of these i would like to become a hit or my ultimate dream Lie to Me.

Posted by: jay727 Sep 16 2016, 09:28 PM

Could you imagine! B sides and Gary solo songs, if only!

I hope the boys turn up as guest judges too from time to time.

In terms of the David Walliams factor, I hope Graham Norton can provide a bit of that charm!

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Sep 17 2016, 09:21 PM

If there was any Take That related song in any way that i would love to see become a hit is Lie To Me by Gary. I have always loved this song, its an absolute gem that very few people know it exists, i also love yesterdays girl from 12 months 11 days but Lie To Me deserves to be a hit and it really should have been the lead single from that album.

Posted by: jay727 Sep 19 2016, 06:06 PM

Rumour is that the show will be broken up into 3 stages, with a new judge sitting next to Gary, Danni and Martin for each stage. The actress from Glee is judge for the first stage. Interesting and should keep things fresh

Posted by: dylan62 Sep 19 2016, 08:02 PM

Feedback from the audience appears to be positive - although as most will be TT/GB fans I guess that needs to be taken into account. I understand that Mark and Howard were also at the studio. Although the show is billed as a GB vehicle I'm so, so pleased that both H and M are there and fully involved from the beginning.

I know it's based on a band similar to TT so to have all of them involved on some level is fantastic. I just hope there's some footage of them when the show airs and they're not side lined.

Posted by: pippa Sep 20 2016, 03:56 PM

Ideally Mark and Howard will feature regularly on the show. Do we have a start date when this will air on tv?

Posted by: milly Sep 20 2016, 04:18 PM

It will start airing at the beginning of January.

Apparently, nobody has sung any TT song so far sad.gif

Posted by: pippa Sep 20 2016, 06:40 PM

That is reasonably close, no Take That song so far, maybe that is interesting and it will be a limited number of Take That songs only.

Posted by: dylan62 Sep 20 2016, 07:17 PM

Apparently the talent is very strong. I could be wrong but I think the musical will have an original score so it's unlikely there will be many, if any, TT songs sung on the show:(

Posted by: pippa Sep 20 2016, 07:57 PM

That disappoints me as i looked forward to the different renditions of Take That songs.

Posted by: dylan62 Sep 20 2016, 09:28 PM

I could be wrong Pippa but I'm sure I read it somewhere. As far as I can make out the musical will be based on a boy band and will draw on aspects of TT's experience, but they aren't looking for a carbon copy of Rob or the others as it isn't based on TT. I think a Rob tribute act auditioned but they're more likely to be looking for fresh theatre talent rather than established 'tribute' or 'cabaret' type performers. I understand there was a fantastic 16 year old in audition one and the talent has apparently been good at subsequent auditions.

I don't know who the scriptwriter is or who's directing/producing the show. I assume Gary is writing the score and will obviously have a significant role. I guess the financing is in place otherwise he wouldn't have gone this far in the process. To be honest I'm a bit sceptical about whether it will have the required pulling power for the WE but time will tell. It's scheduled to tour initially where I guess they'll assess if it has a viable chance of succeeding in London.

There was also some indication a while back that Gary was writing a score for another HW musical based on a remake of Around the World in 80 days - but I don't know if the production is going ahead or if it's been shelved.

Posted by: milly Sep 20 2016, 10:33 PM

What I gathered from all the articles was that, while the musical isn't about TT in particular, it wouldl feature TT's music and the songs would be covers. In her interviews, Dannii Minogue has spoken about how some of the best musicals were based on covers of great songs, which lead me to believe that this musical will be in the same vein. That's why I assumed that people would be singing various covers of TT songs on the show. Otherwise, if the score is original and TT is in no way related to the musical, then I don't really see the need for Mark and Howard's involvement in the show.

Posted by: dylan62 Sep 21 2016, 08:27 AM

You may well be right Milly. I may have misinterpreted something but I'm sure I read the script wasn't based on TT's story. I guess that doesn't mean TT songs wont be featured in the show.

Either way it's an interesting time and I'm glad that H and M have been involved in the TV show even if it turns out to be a back stage role. Both of them seem to be enjoying the process, dancing on stage with fans etc. It appears Mark has been very upbeat spending lots of time talking to fans and generally being approachable.

As Gary is the serious one I can imagine him rolling his eyes and shaking his head at their antics smile.gif I think Gary has a lot riding on this project because he's left himself wide open to critics ready to bounce at the first opportunity.

If he weren't busy with his own antics laugh.gif So far, we have had stories about him having his teeth picked by the make-up artist during breaks laugh.gif , winking and blowing kisses at fans...he seems to be enjoying himself smile.gif
Plus, there was a hilarious exchange between Gary and Dannii: Dannii confused: "Why are they (the audience) all cheering?", the bast*rd Barlow: "Because I smiled" laugh.gif laugh.gif laugh.gif

You're right. That's what Gary has said, that the story of the musical isn't about TT.
But it's all still very confusing about the music part.

"The talent show will search for five singers to form a group to star in a nationwide stage show, called ‘The Band’, featuring Take That’s music."

“One of the unique things about Glee was the covers of popular songs,” she said.

“They became the soundtrack to people’s lives, as well as the characters on the show.

I would find it strange if a decent percentage of music was not related to Take That. Going by some of the posts their appears to be a great atmosphere on the set which is wonderful as this should translate excellently on TV and as a result make great family viewing.

Posted by: dylan62 Sep 21 2016, 07:58 PM

I don't think any of us expect an innovative ground breaking show. More than anything I just hope it avoids the contrived and manipulative elements so beloved by XF. If it provides good family entertainment which is light hearted with a focus on talent then it has a chance of success. I don't mind judges criticising contestants but sometimes there's too much of an edge bordering on nastiness. I thought Gary occasionally over stepped the mark on XF- this time I'm hope he's constructive and kind.

I've read good things about the judging panel; hopefully that translates well onto the small screen.

Posted by: pippa Sep 22 2016, 02:01 PM

Indeed, it won't be hugely innovative as all these style shows will naturally have similar elements. Criticising is acceptable when its constructive and avoids been hurtful, contrived or nastiness.

ya im just catching up online, also good to read it beat the Voice in last night ratings, let it shine had 6.3 million to the voice 5.9. Good start for the show so lets hope it grows.

I enjoyed the first show,i agree about the talent, nothing hugely memorable on the first night, but i believe it will improve.

Managed to watch it back, in general the opening shows in all telent shows are my least favourite episodes, i like when its whittled down more. With X Factor for example i just like when it gets to the live shows. Let It Shine was good, and as good a si hoped it would but i will enjoy it more as it progresses.

So good having Dannii Minogue back as well, (always my fave X Factor Judge)

It'd take a bit of wandering about the auld internet to watch the Gary Barlow show....and just now had a bad thought about Kylie/Dannii Minogue.... rolleyes.gif rolleyes.gif

What kind of bad thought would this be bigwiglaf?

Posted by: nirvanamusic Jan 15 2017, 06:15 PM

I'm liking the positive aspect of the show and the fact they aren't manipulating the vulnerable or exploiting them either for 'entertainment'. The talent is great however I love seeing all the archive footage of TT as well as the other boyband clips featured also.
It really emphasises the point and different aspects to what makes a great boyband work whether it's the blend of the members, chemistry, dancing etc which they've talked about in segments.
I've noticed Backstreet Boys have a lot more clips other than TT themselves but as the best selling boyband of all time that would be a given to show the different areas they've talked about using them as an example as well as TT and others.
I hope the show remains above the Voice in ratings as it is a feel good show and showcasing talent. I loved the rocker guy singing Bon Jovi he was fantastic and something a bit different however am not envisioning him in the final band.

Ratings have gone down from the first week - but its still ahead of The Voice.

I'm really enjoying the show! The talent this week was much more impressive too.

Posted by: pippa Jan 16 2017, 03:24 PM

I like the energy of the show and week 2 had much greater talent which is welcoming.

Posted by: milly Jan 24 2017, 08:12 AM

So far, the 3rd show has been my favorite. I'm really enjoying it and, most importantly, I'm not bored yet. I'm looking forward to see what will happen in the live shows.

Its the live shows i most look forward to and i too believe the show is building well, it all looks very promising.

Next week looks great with the duets!

I like Martin Kemp in general but im not sure if he makes a great judge, he seems to afraid to say anything negative.

Posted by: pippa Jan 30 2017, 08:13 PM

I felt Martin did give some negative comments this week. Golly, that last guy on the show this weekend was amazing.

I like the show, like any show it takes time to get a feel for it and im really starting to get in on it after last weeks show. A bit like the x factor though looking forward to the live shows.

Really enjoyed the show this weekend!! The Olly and Mel C were my favs! Mel C's group had some excellent singers in it

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Feb 8 2017, 04:00 AM

I liked both as well but it was great seeing Mel C perform on a prime time show again.

Those were my favorites too smile.gif If those were real boybands, the girls would go crazy over them.

I can't wait for Saturday; presumably, now they start singing TT songs.

The Band is coming to London! I’ve got tickets for the opening night 1st December! Excited!

Posted by: nirvanamusic Mar 18 2018, 04:21 PM

I'm glad they've done it the right way and toured the country getting the show perfected and just right. It's also great to tour the country first instead of just settling in London. I think if they had gone straight into the West End like the Spice Girls 'Viva Forever' then it wouldn't have worked.

I know a group who went and saw 'Viva Forever' in London and they said it was dreadful.

Posted by: jay727 Mar 18 2018, 11:11 PM

Yeah, not surprised about Viva Forever.

Did anyone ever see the Never Forget show that was on in the West End a few years back?

Posted by: nirvanamusic Mar 19 2018, 08:20 PM

I saw the Never Forget show on DVD but didn't make it to the end of the show as it was really bad and I can't really remember much of it. It was strange as it was endorsed by Nigel at the time however but Take That put out a statement distancing themselves from it and stating no involvement. Having tried to watch it once before I can see why.

Yeah, I remember watching it on YouTube actually! Although I remember Jason saying he went to see it and enjoyed it
