This movie released all around the world yesterday!!! Brett Ratner is the director of the movie and Dwayne Johnson plays the character of Hercules. We wouldn't say that "The Rock" is the best actor in Hollywood but it doesn't need to have an Academic performance for this movie. At least, I hope they respect the hero and they haven't made a movie like the Tv Series of Hercules.

It was OK, 5 out of 10, saw the 3D version, some decent performances (Brits, of course, like John Hurt and Ian McShane), great effects, surprising end-credits song (which is in the actual charts and I didn't realise - Jungle) and Ive definitely seen worse in this genre over the last few years. Entertaining enough.

How close to the original myth are we talking here? Is there any attempt to tell a story or is it a "Clash of the Titans"-style hack, slash, hack, slash, walk for a bit, oh look...another monster, hack, slash, hack, slash type affair?

there's a bit of monster bashing, but these are shown to be "stories" in flashback, glossed up by Hercules' nephew. Including the 12 labours, which are hinted to have earthly events behind them, so the actual plot is rooted in men against men. OK, unbelievably strong and skillful men in Hercules case, but still men, politicking and power-mad and ruthless.

So, not so much Jason And The Argonauts as a (slightly-Hollywoodised) version of events as they might have been in reality.

Thanks - might be worth a look in.

Oh, is it set in Greece or Rome? I'm guessing it's in Greece and the Americans have gone for the Roman name as they usually do. Not sure what's wrong with Heracles, but there you go...

Yeah, in the same way that Odysseus often gets called Ulysses in mass-market adaptations smile.gif

Might need to check out "Hercules" then...also to smell what the Rock is cooking etc.

I watched this movie at the cinema today!!!It seems that "Hercules" is an interesting hero for Hollywood because studios have already released two movies with him this year (The Legend of Hercules & Hercules). The first movie was "The Legend of Hercules" with Kellan Lutz. It had a disappointing beginning at the box office and it ended up to be a big failure worldwide. The second "Hercules" movie was released seven months later and it has a different leading actor (Dwayne Johsson/The Rock) and a different story (Thracian wars). I hadn't the chance to watch the first movie (I was lucky..) but I didn't want to lose anything from the new movie. I have watched the official trailer at the cinema and it seemed very impressive movie. Besides, we rarely watch many new movies every August in Greece because almost everyone is on holidays even though we are in a financial crisis..
The movie was an ultimate disappointment! We were sure about the bad context when we watched the first fifteen minutes. Historical inaccuracies, irrelevant names/people with Hercules, innuendos, modern humour etc. I found it a little bit better than the Tv series of Hercules based on the direction but the script and the dialogues were exactly the same. The acting was bad as the movie continued. The movies of Brett Ratner are always hit or miss but he could make a better movie with this budget ($100.000.000). He is famous for his collaborations with big pop stars like Madonna and Mariah Carey and he undertook the direction of many well-know pop hits. Some of them were quite good (Jessica Simpson – These Boots are made for walkin') but some of them were very bad (Miley Cyrus – 7 things). Don't forget that his latest movie, Movie 43, was the biggest winner of the Golden Razzies (2013). How humiliating! It seemed that the producers/writer/director didn't respect the legendary hero. They added so many irrelevant/silly things and we ended up watching a monstrosity!
Ok, this is my personal opinion and I'm sure that many people found it exciting as a movie but this doesn't change the quality and the context of the movie! It was a parody without offering something good apart from mocking it with your friends. We mocked it all the time and the rest of the viewers did the same. The most deserving thing about it, it was the fact that we bought a bucket of popcorn and one of my friends offered us pasteli/sesame seed candy. At least, the movie was less painful with the consumption of them.
"Hercules" lost the No.1 place at the box office to "Lucy" with Scarlett Johansson but it managed to reach $160.000.000 worldwide. Surely, it's not the best result for a blockbuster movie but it avoided the total ruin although the plot was so bad. It has an average score in Imdb (6,5) which it means that the viewers/fans don't know many things about Greek Mythology and Hercules. Personally, I would give it less than 5 because they should respect the hero and I hope they will leave him alone in the future. I'm sorry but we don't need another hero if they will represent him like this!
