BuzzJack Music Forum _ Indie, Rock and Alternative _ Yungblud - Weird!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 21st April 2020, 02:59 PM

Following last year's 'hope for the underrated youth' EP, Yungblud has confirmed his second album will release this year! and the lead single 'Weird!' is out tomorrow.

I've liked everything he's released over the last 2 years, and he's described the new single as inspired by LCD Soundsystem and Depeche Mode so I'm quite excited for it.

Really enjoying this on the first couple of listens, I love the synth-rock direction!

Posted by: ___∆___ 23rd April 2020, 09:14 AM

Absolutely LOVING this! I’m a huge fan but this is totally the right direction in regards to it being more accessible and commercial.

I've been listening to this a lot, and I can't not hear 'Give Yourself a Try' in the chorus. laugh.gif

Not that that's a bad thing though!

Tbh this is Give Yourself A Try without a horrifically grating instrumental and I'm digging it laugh.gif

I liked his parts of 11 Minutes and Tongue Tied - and just realised he did I Love You, Will You Marry Me too which I like

Maybe we should ask Bjork? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Bré 🐠 29th April 2020, 12:50 AM

Oops I actually like this song

I need to stay away from the music video because his facial expressions still make me die a little inside. But the song itself is actually good stuff, his voice is much less annoying than usual and the instrumental is great. Kinda sounds like what I was hoping The 1975's new song would sound like.

Posted by: Infludexton* 5th May 2020, 10:50 AM

This is growing on me a lot! It's The 1975 but better

Posted by: ___∆___ 5th May 2020, 01:23 PM

So good - a shame it doesn't appear to be doing anything yet.

I wasn't expecting it to sadly "outside the fanbase" :/ though it is #158 on Apple and climbing!

I expect the album will have really strong sales at least.

Posted by: ___∆___ 5th May 2020, 01:58 PM

^^ That’s the thing though he has a huge fan base but can’t seem to turn that into a hit.

I’ve seen him live 7 times now, each show was sold out and when I saw him at the NME awards he was one of the main artists and done a fan meet up afterwards which was crazy. I guess it’s good he’s appeared on Apple but I’d have also thought his target market would be heavily into streaming too.

Anyway mini rant over drama.gif laugh.gif

Posted by: Dexton 15th May 2020, 05:50 PM

Weird is on R1’s playlist now! cheer:

This is growing on me immensely

Well if Bjork doesn’t like it then it must be an objectively bad song because Bjork is always right angel.gif

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 20th May 2020, 05:51 PM

Not part of the album of course, but a Yungblud remix of 24kGoldn's 'City of Angels' it out now! Finally taking the song to a respectable length tongue.gif

Been playing the song a lot so far this evening, what a single - I definitely prefer it to Weird and sounds great turned up loud!

Crikey! A collab with Denzel Curry is out here on Friday at 5am - he's described it as "heavy af"

Unstanning Denzel as we speak

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 14th August 2020, 03:22 PM

Not liking this at all, it sounds like they've remixed something from a Tim Burton soundtrack

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 17th September 2020, 12:15 PM

The album is titled 'Weird!' and is now out for pre-order, no release date or tracklist yet though. *and* 'god save me, but don't drown me out' it out now! Sounding fantastic

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 17th September 2020, 01:13 PM

It's out on November 13th! Tracklisting:

1. Teresa
2. Cotton Candy
3. Strawberry Lipstick
4. Mars
5. Superdeadfriends
6. Love Song
7. god save me, but don't drown me out
8. Ice Cream Man
9. Weird!
10. Charity
11. It's Quiet in Beverly Hills
12. The Freak Show

Posted by: All★bySmashMouth 17th September 2020, 01:22 PM

The cover is a bit too similar to his EP cover last year. They could've tried something else.

And... I kinda don't like that the titles are all (changed to) small letters for some reason. But I didn't mind it on his EP last year or... MGK's Tickets To My Downfall album.

But whatever, YUNGBLUD being YUNGBLUD. I just want some cool tracks from him (which some are ('strawberry lipstick' is a choon), some aren't).

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 7th October 2020, 08:33 PM

"cotton candy" is out on Friday!

Posted by: WhoOdyssey 9th October 2020, 07:08 AM

Definitely not my favourite so far, but it's still decent and the bass slaps! Seems to be getting a push on HHUK

Def my favourite release of his

"mars" is out today ahead of the album next week, another really good one! Love the emotion in it as well

How much are we expecting Yungblud to sell? He seems to be a fan base centred artist!

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 1st December 2020, 03:43 PM

"acting like that" with Machine Gun Kelly is out at midnight - it's not on the 'Weird!' tracklisting but has the album cover so I guess it's just a loose single? Looking forward to it though!

The record company are confident it will be challenging for a #1 place!

From Music Week -

QUOTE
Yungblud is set to be one of the biggest UK acts in the world, manager Tommas Arnby has told Music Week.

Doncaster-born Yungblud (real name Dominic Harrison) drops his sophomore album Weird! on Friday (December 4). Licensed to Interscope in the US and Polydor in the UK, the LP is set to build on the rising rock star’s global streaming success.

“Having an album out this year was incredibly important,” said Arnby, CEO of Locomotion Entertainment. “It means that we can double the fanbase and then he’ll be one of the top five British artists [globally], which is pretty good in three years.

“We see it as a global project and Interscope allowed me to take that view with their investment from the outset. So the UK is as much our home market as the US.”

Although the LP will be competing with new releases from Shawn Mendes and Kelly Jones, Arnby is hopeful of a UK No.1.

“I think we have a shot,” he said. “But we’re also very excited about the album beyond the first week.

“We’ve always been the underdog. We just focus on the things that we have control over, and what we do have is an amazingly engaged fanbase.”

Last year’s The Underrated Youth EP peaked at No.6 and has sales to date of 30,377 (Official Charts Company). Yungblud now has 8,474,844 monthly listeners on Spotify and Arnby expects that to go past 10 million in the coming weeks.

The singer has described Weird! as a record about self-acceptance and liberation. Arnby suggested it’s a concept album that will continue to evolve.

“We want to look at the album more like a project, it’s not a closed body of work,” he said. “We want to add music to it for some time, into Q1 and possibly beyond. We’ve got a lot of music in the bank.”

Yungblud is one of the few rock acts who breaches the singles chart. Cotton Candy is currently on the Radio 1 A list and grazed the Top 100 (21,942 sales).

His recent collaboration with Bring Me The Horizon on Obey resulted in his first Top 40 hit (No.37, 50,502 sales). It follows 2019’s I Think I’m Okay with Machine Gun Kelly and Travis Barker, which peaked at No.90 (249,076 sales) and has more than 210m Spotify streams.

Further surprise collaborations are set to drop following the album release this week.

“It would be great to have a bonafide hit record internationally, which I’m sure we will be able to achieve,” said Arnby.

In the past 12 months, Yungblud has grown his Instagram followers from 1.7m to 2.7m. He has 1.8m TikTok followers.

“Instagram and TikTok have been very important platforms for him to scale with authenticity,” said Arnby. “He’s smashing it on TikTok.”

Yungblud recently performed at the MTV EMAs, where he was voted winner of the Best Push award.

“It’s still the fans who are the best sales force out there,” said Arnby.

I think his first week sales will shock many.

It’s been on pre-order for months with constant new/limited editions - he has another variation launching tomorrow at 5pm too.

His £7 signed Amazon Black Friday CD sold out, it was then restocked and sold out again.

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 1st December 2020, 09:35 PM

It'll Arctic Monkeys as his main competition, but I have no idea what sort of sales to expect for their live album.

Kinda holding out buying a CD as I'm half expecting it to be discounted next week laugh.gif

The fact they sold the signed ones for £7 on Black Friday and have so many versions I’m certain they will all be £5 next week.

Also Banquet Records done a video the other day and said they had several thousand copies arrive so I’m sure he’ll be doing personalised signings for them too

Anything over 0 sales will be shocking honestly. Imagine spending money on a YUNGBLUD album.

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 1st December 2020, 10:53 PM

Good one

Posted by: Christmasteve201 2nd December 2020, 12:22 AM

😂

In fairness he has had so many singles I wouldn’t be surprised if preorders are huge. I still wouldn’t bet against Ball/Boe at this point though!

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 2nd December 2020, 12:33 AM

He's been good to keep up his presence way from the album singles as well. This year outside of the Weird songs there's been:

- City of Angels (Remix) with 24kGoldn
- body bag with Machine Gun Kelly & Bert McCracken
- Lemonade with Denzel Curry
- Obey with Bring Me The Horizon
- acting like that with Machine Gun Kelly

And that Music Week interview mentions more collabs coming after the album, there's been one rumoured of him and Post Malone - that would be massive!

Posted by: Christmasteve201 2nd December 2020, 06:48 PM

Yeh a Post Malone collab would be huge and interesting to hear!

Posted by: Dexton 5th December 2020, 05:17 PM

Great album but... what purpose is there to using clean versions of songs instead of the originals? God save me but don’t drown me out sounds so odd

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 5th December 2020, 05:32 PM

Where/what version are you listening to? It's all the original versions for me listening on Spotify

Posted by: Dexton 5th December 2020, 05:58 PM

Okay weird (lol). Clicking on the album through the New Releases tab on Spotify takes me to a clean version of the album which I can’t otherwise reach... as going to the album via Yungbluds page or just searching only shows up the explicit one laugh.gif

“Not gonna waste my life, 'cause I've been messed up” is jarring and then most other swears in that song are just blanked out! So strange. My mistake for thinking that was the only version anyway I kinda just figured they’d advertise the normal version

Posted by: FestiveOdyssey 5th December 2020, 06:04 PM

Yeah that's quite strange! Reminds me of the explicit version of BMTH's Ludens only being avaliable on the clean version of the EP laugh.gif

Posted by: ___∆___ 5th December 2020, 08:36 PM

Personalised signed albums now available via Banquet (You just add in the comments whatever you want him to write - I’ve gone for one of my favourite lyrics!).

They are available to order until midnight and he said he’ll be going live tomorrow during his session of signing them all

Yes it will be front loaded but they are doing bits to get extra sales (They have put cassettes down to £4.99 for a day, he’s still doing personalised album signings etc.,).

Should end the week with a pretty stellar figure! cheer.gif

Absolutely amazing sales for YB this week especially as debut has ‘only’ shifted 64k in 2.5 years.

I’m still waiting for 2 items I ordered to be dispatched so hopefully if that’s the case for others it will go someway in cushioning the fall next week.

Really don’t know what to expect for week 2 - he’s achieved week 1 off social media and fan power and has had next to zero mainstream promo.

Posted by: Christmasteve201 11th December 2020, 11:12 PM

Stunning sales even if I’m not a fan.

He only did 8k the rest of the week so could be a drop this week but 8k would keep him top 20!

Can’t wait to see where this ends up this week, I literally have no idea how it’s going to fare!
