The OCC have dropped the rule that requires albums only ever released as a budget album to have to sell twice as many copies as albums that started out as mid or full price albums in order to qualify for a certification.

This has been the case since the automatic certification scheme began on 22 July 2013. The BPI confirmed this when a poster at one of the boards contacted them when budget-only albums began to receive numerous certification awards. The reason why the need to sell twice as many copies was dropped was to simplify the certification process as it is the OCC sales / product database that awards the certification - it makes it easier if the database doesn't constantly need to reference whether an album has always been a budget price only release before awarding a certification.

Much better rule regarding budget albums - There have been some consistant selling budget albums that only got awarded silver for 120,000 sales despite selling for around £3.99 at retail whilst 'non-budget' albums are getting sold at 99p and get awarded silver at 60k!

I really wish they'd just do away with the concept of budget albums entirely, I know it's related to dealer price and not retail price but even so the 99p offers of the last year have just made a mockery of it.

An interesting certification for Radiohead. 'Paranoid Android' is only their second single certification, following on from 'Creep' which was also certified Silver, back in July 2013.

Amy Winehouse achieves a Silver certification for her solo version of 'Valerie'. It peaked at number 37 in 2007. She also achieved a Platinum certification for her collaboration on the same song with Mark Ronson, back in July 2013.

Good to see Kenny Rogers also achieving a Silver certification for what I think is one of his best tracks, 'The Gambler'. The track finally charted and reached number 22 in 2007, almost three decades after the track was first released as a single

Yeah, there was a load on the BPI Twitter but they've been late updating their official site, which usually has a couple more certifications not mentioned on their Twitter.

Strange to see 'Not Afraid' going Platinum. It didn't seem that big at the time but no doubt it was overshadowed by 'Love the Way You Lie'.

I wonder what the total sales of 'My Way' are? 200k downloads (or a bit less than that cos streams but there aren't gonna be that many streams for it) plus 120-ish weeks of being in the top 50 surely must add up, even if sales were very low at the time of its original release. Of course the OCC wouldn't be able to give it an accurate sales figure though.

bengy99 on Haven said that 'My Way' was certified Silver for 250k sales on 24th January 1970 by DISC magazine, but is unaware of what it sold between 1970 and 2006 (the date of release BPI give, presumably when it was first released as a download). I'll try and find some more sales info on it.

Edit: Andy on Haven has an estimate of 940,000 as of May 2014. I don't think you'll get any more accurate than that.

In fact, Haven have an article about the 100 Best Selling Karaoke Classics that Magic broadcasted in August 2012 with sales from the OCC and 'My Way' had sales of 910k.

I've just noticed that 'Numb/Encore' by Jay-Z & Linkin Park has gone Platinum. The track peaked at number 14 and had an amazing run inside the top 20, meandering around positions 14 to 20 for three months from December 2004 to February 2005. The single is back in the top 75 following a price reduction at iTunes. It has now spent 44 weeks inside the top 75 and 176 weeks in total inside the top 200.

It really is! I remember thinking Paloma wouldn't be able to quite make 2x Platinum with A Perfect Contradiction but obviously 'Only Love Can Hurt Like This' really helped keep the album selling well. FYI, Do You Want the Truth or Something Beautiful has sold around 720k and Fall to Grace has sold around 660k.

It was released pre-1994 so 200k is just its downloads I think, so add it to its physical sales which I'm not sure about but I say it should be around 400k total.

It's sales were 340,850 in 2001 (it was the 21st best seller of the year) so the track has been selling a decent amount each year since download sales were first counted for certification purposes in November 2004, plus it will have had a few streaming sales in the past year.

Wow just realised that 'Don't Look Back Into The Sun' by The Libertines has gone silver!! Quite an achievement for a song that was released in the low sales climate of 2003 and has never returned to the Top 100 after its initial poor chart run of 11-37-47-72.

The same for 'Chop Suey' by System of a Down - Again hardly a big seller/hit in 2001 (17-29-46-60-84-87) and has never troubled the charts since - I guess both must have sold steadily every week and been boosted by streaming.

'Things We Lost in the Fire' is probably my second favoruite from Bastille after 'Flaws'

'Notorious', obviously was a long time coming, and well deserved, one of The Saturdays' best. This will probably be their last ever certification, so I'm going to hype this as long as possible.

'7/11' - Beyonce's second best single from the latest era after 'Drunk in Love', of course.

Good to see older hits from McFly and Kelly Clarkson getting certifications, too.

And Hurrraaah for 'Yours' by Ella 'flop' Henderson, glad she managed another hit off the album despite Ghost STILL being everywhere.

Not only that but back in 2005 selling the album was the most important thing as album sales were booming at that point, and the song shifted bucketloads of the album over the Christmas period.

I'm surprised that 'The Reason' has passed 200k. It felt like a bit of a flop here compared to how well it did in America. It must be a good trickle seller as it sold less than 40k in 2004, and was the 177th best seller of the year.

Agreed. Looking at its full chart run, it did spend a lot of time in the Top 250 in 2005 (as the chart was back then):

Considering how bad sales were at the bottom of the charts at the time, I can't see it adding more than 10k/15k in 2005 which would bring its total to 44k-49k. However, it's possible for it have averaged ~15k in every year since to brings its to-date total to 200k. I could imagine Kerrang! play it and they usually really help songs to trickle sell, even if they didn't do exceptionally well initally.

I think that both 'Bloodstream' and 'Photograph' both managed 200k before the time they started receiving airplay. Although a huge chunk will of course be streams which Ed Sheeran seems to be the king of - would be interesting to see his single sales without them!

It's saddening that so few artist albums have gone silver this year, yet something as anonymous as the House Every Weekend compilation can manage it. I guess there's still a lot of money in the compilation market for record labels

The Compilations sector part of the market has continued to increase its sales year on year. To last Thursday over 13 million compilation albums have been sold this year which is a 1.6% increase to this point last year. This accounts for 27.5% of all albums sold this year. Artist albums have declined in sales by 10.6% this year.

Total sales for 'Sweet Home Alabama' by Lynyrd Skynyrd are now in excess of 700,000. It sold over 300,000 copies as part of the Free Bird EP, which is an enormous sale for a record that peaked at number 21. Initially 'Sweet Home Alabama' was the main listed side when it first charted in 1976 but when it recharted in both 1979 and 1982 the name of the EP was listed as the title. Alan Jones reported in Record Mirror in 1989 that the EP had sold over 300,000 copies. It has now sold a further 400,000 copies in its own right with a peak of number 44.

Excellent to see Human finally go silver and The One That Got Away go gold despite missing the top 20! Both are two of the most beautiful songs of the decade in my view

Just a couple of notes regarding the bunch of certifications I posted:

If the 2006-11 and the 2012-15 versions of Now! Christmas were combined (which I don't see why they're not), it would have a grand total of about 2.3m.

'Wind Beneath My Wings' sold 188k in 1989 so its total is now 388k.

'Dirty Diana' is the fifth MJ song to be certified for its post initial chart run (in other words, its downloads and physical re-release in 2006, if it received one), following 'The Way You Make Me Feel' (Silver), 'Thriller' (Gold), 'Man in the Mirror' (Gold) and 'Smooth Criminal' (Silver). Not sure how much 'Dirty Diana' sold in 1988 but I'd guess ~150k which would stick it at ~350k in total.

'Hot in Herre' has sold about 150k downloads/streams given it sold 240k in 2002 and maybe about 10k in 2003. Also, 'Woman Trouble' has 43k downloads/streams.

Johnny Cash "Hurt" gold?! It only peaked at #39 when originally released in 2003 (when sales were quite low) as an A-side to personal Jesus. Although it did make a reappearance in 2011 at #59 after Leona's performance of the song on the X-factor final/Royal Variety Show.
