Hmm... Phantom Thread pulling a couple of surprises over some more obvious contenders. Surprised at Daniel actually getting a nom for Get Out though...I don't get the huge acting award noms for that film tbh. Didn't really strike me as "awards worthy" but ehhhh.

Also omg at Mitzee from Hollyoaks being up for an Oscar when will your faves

Posted by: UltraReputation Jan 23 2018, 02:16 PM

Still crying over the Florida Project.

Posted by: Cremey Jan 23 2018, 02:33 PM

SUFJAN heart.gif

Great to see Loving Vincent there too and glad Three Billboards received a lot, that’s definitely my favourite of the year so far. Can’t wait to see ‘The Shape of Water’, looks incredible.

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 23 2018, 02:48 PM

I'm not shocked at the lack of 'The Florida Project' tbh. In fact, it's the only category that it deserves the nomination haha sad.gif #UnpopularOpinion

The Post being snubbed for as much as it is, is surprising. Definitely thought Spielberg was one of the dead certs for director at least. But I kinda half expected T Hanks to get snubbed. Just by the trailers I'm not convinced it's an award worthy performance.

---
Yay for CMBYN getting as much recognition as it has, although again, Director snub is surprising. Would've thought that'd have been one that was more or less set in stone.

Sufjan getting original song nomination is good to see, even if the song didn't do much for me personally. It is a nice song though. I hope 'This Is Me' gets it, but I imagine it's a two horse race between those two and we get to see them performed on the night biggrin.gif

Yeah, REALLY excited for 'The Shape Of Water'. Can't believer we've had to wait so long for it though nocheer.gif

Posted by: Regina Jan 23 2018, 02:51 PM

Oscar nominee Greta Gerwig though *.*

Thought Jessica and James would be certs, especially James who won the Golden Globe. Although Aaron Taylor Johnson missed out for Nocturnal Animals.

Posted by: UltraReputation Jan 23 2018, 03:41 PM

I think James would've made it if it wasn't for the allegations coming out during the oscar voting period. I'm surprised it was Washington though that made it and not Hanks, I find Hanks so underrated in the post and he really deserved to get in sad.gif

I'm not surprised at the post doing really bad. I only predicted it for four noms (with Hanks and score both in 5th), I think I said to Josh that I thought it would do really similar to Selma in the end which it seems to have done

I'm low-key annoyed that the best pic wildcard spots ended up being darkest hour and phantom thread. I was rooting so much for the Florida Project, the big sick and I Tonya. I wish the latter got in so Margot would get a best pic nom + all 5 leading actresses would be for a film nominated in best picture this year sad.gif TFP I don't rly have any more to say than I think that certifies Dafoe isn't winning sad.gif I'm glad TBS made it into screenplay but I'm crying over the Hunter snub, she so deserved that nomination and I'd be shocked if she wasn't 6th considering TBS made script over the post and I Tonya.

Actress turned out to be the obvious five in the end after all that talk about how there would have to be a shock somewhere in there laugh.gif I'm shocked mudbound did so well, I didn't think Oscars would get over there Netflix bias so quickly so that's a massive win for Netflix. I predicted 5/5 for supporting actor, I had a feeling CMBYN was gonna miss that category completely ever since the SAG noms.

Yasss at baby driver slaying in techs, this is me making best song, screaming at boss baby actually getting into animation and I had a feeling one of the big films of the year was going to get that last adapted screenplay nod!

And where the actual f*** did that phantom thread director nom come from???? Shocked McDonagh was snubbed and both Peele/Gerwig got in

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 23 2018, 04:35 PM

Ahhh. I didn't see Armie wasn't in "Supporting Actor" sad.gif That's a huge loss to that category and only confirms and guarantees Sam Rockwell's win imo (which would still be a brilliant outcome/my first choice anyway).

Posted by: Regina Jan 23 2018, 05:32 PM

Those James alligations were from YEARS ago and were put to bed drama.gif I hate how they get sorted and he can move on with his life until something like this happens and suddenly he's a monster.

SCREAMING AT THE BOSS BABY AND FERDINAND !!! NO LEGO MOVIES

This is just insulting.

Not sure if 'Your Name' was eligible for this year or last year with how it works but 'A Silent Voice' was definitely eligible and to get... whatever that Boss Baby thing is over it is really kind of ridiculous when you consider this is an awards session, supposed to highlight the more niche films. Animation can be a viable medium that isn't just for kids etc etc (although to be fair, googling The Breadwinner, Loving Vincent and Coco, those seem totally legit films to be on there)

Actually, I've just found the list of films submitted. They had ASV and In This Corner Of The World, and even Sword Art Online: Ordinal Scale would have made the animation category look less of a joke. Or the Lego Movies. I'm sorry, who made these choices?

The voting for Animated Feature changed this year which was always more likely to favour blockbuster animated films. In the past, only voters from the animated branch were able to vote meaning they were much more likely to favour niche films. From this year, any Academy member can vote in that category just like Best Picture meaning most people are just gonna nominate what they see at the cinema with their little ones. Expect to see many more nominees in the future like The Boss Baby and Ferdinand which probably would have just been Golden Globes fodder in the past sad.gif

Ban it.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jan 23 2018, 09:56 PM

I'm on it dw x

I'm aware I haven't seen it, but The Boss Baby up for Animated Film when it was pretty much universally acknowledged as an average at best film that just has box office numbers going for it is ridiculous and while I wasn't expecting Lego Batman to get in after the first one didn't, I just can't shake the feeling of snootiness they have towards it. If that's set to be the new norm going by Josh's post, then that's not good. Animated films can be just as meaningful and ground-breaking as live action.

Anyway, that aside, a decent set of noms, fantastic to see Logan get one for Adapted Screenplay (shame Wonder Woman couldn't pick up at least one nom, feels a bit wrong that the only DC film still with an award to it's name is Suicide Squad...), and Get Out getting so many is absolutely wonderful to see for a modern horror film.

I've seen two out of nine of those Best Picture nominees already (Get Out and Dunkirk) so that's two down *. Not that I'm particularly looking forward to The Post, everything about that feels far too calculated and cynical, somewhat glad it didn't get as many nominations as I thought.

Posted by: UltraReputation Jan 23 2018, 09:59 PM

I'm 4/9 for Best Pic so far!

1) Three Billboards
2) Dunkirk
3) Get Out
4) The Post

Loved Three Billboards & will probs be a contender for my top 10 of 2018, both Dunkirk/Get Out were just in/just outside my top 10 of 2017 and The Post was good but nothing more than that and I wish it was snubbed here. kink.gif

Posted by: Jonjo Jan 23 2018, 10:17 PM

I genuinely don't get their hate for Lego Movie!? The first one I will let slide coz it had some live action scenes in it, but Lego Batman... I can't. The animation is actually really good/not generic animation sad.gif

Boss Baby I enjoyes more than I thought I would. But that's because I was expecting 2/10 and it ended up being 6/10 at best lol.

Posted by: Chez Wombat Jan 23 2018, 10:49 PM

I feel like part of it is that they're typically resistant because it's built around promoting a commercialised product or maybe it's just too frantic and filled with pop culture references (I recall Wreck it Ralph lost to Brave as well despite being much better received), which does reek of snobbiness as even critics recognised that there was a good film in there with both films, and it's not exactly the Emoji movie...

Posted by: Doctor Blind Jan 23 2018, 10:58 PM

YAY for Get Out - that was probably my favourite film last year! Enhanced by the use of Childish Gambino at the end. *.*

In other huge news for Mudbound, I've just found out that Rachel Morrison is the first EVER female cinematographer to be nominated in that category. Crazy that it took 90 years for that to happen so big congratulations to her! *.*

Posted by: Josh! Jan 24 2018, 01:45 AM

Christopher Plummer also becomes the oldest acting nominee ever at 88 years old *.*

He wouldn't have been in my personal top five but props to him for breaking such an impressive record!!!

Posted by: BillyH Jan 28 2018, 10:42 PM

As the Oscars won't take place until March it means that all the major contending films will have been released in the UK by the time of the ceremony this year. Still have bad memories of 2015 when Julianne Moore won Best Actress for a film that still hadn't been released in this country!! (I've never illegally downloaded a film before and have no intention to)

Have any Best Picture winners ever won the Oscar before their UK release, or even other nominations by the time of the ceremony?
