Paloma Faith properly benefitting from Q4 is also a surprise, given her singles have underperformed for the first era ever!

How far are Mariah and Paloma away from no.1??

Glad Rita didn't get no.1 with THAT fall, woulda been a non-no.1!

Screaming that Leona is finally coming for post-release year top 40 and Ariana is finally top 40. I hope both can climb before Friday.

This could be the year that Chris Rea improves on the peak position for 'Driving Home For Christmas', #26 always seems far too low for that song.

Amazing how Rak-Su have held up! Imagine them finishing around #5 this week with streaming picking up gradually (a first for an X Factor Winner's Single) and sales on iTunes only falling slowly.

Until the OCC make up a brand new chart rule to exclude all Christmas songs from the chart and put them in their own Christmas Chart, or limit the number of eligible Christmas songs. Which I think may actually happen otherwise we're going to have the same 20+ odd songs in the top 40 every Christmas, rather than just the same 5-10.

Leona re-entering the top 40 at last! Hopefully it manages to remain top 40 this week and only climbs from now til Christmas.

Hopefully Kelly will re-enter too at some point and climb higher than #30.

What's so wrong with Christmas songs clogging up the charts in December?? I'm sick of the lack of Christmas songs that appear..... the more the merrier! At least listening to the charts will feel like Christmas as it should! ..... a Christmas song might actually get Christmas number 1 God forbid! 😂🎄

Posted by: AcerBen 11th December 2017, 07:28 PM

Is it time to do a separate catalogue singles chart? If iTunes switch off downloads in the next year or two, the top 40 is going to be completely dominated by Christmas songs every December.

It doesn't even mean anything. It's just people going to Spotify's Christmas playlist and hitting play. Kurt Nilsen and 98 Degrees are in the top 100 for goodness sake!

I really dislike recurrent rules/catalogue charts, so I would hope it's never considered. I mean the chart is meant to reflect popularity and Christmas songs are popular for one month a year. Don't think it's that big of a deal.

I mean you could argue that a large amount of streams for a lot of songs are people just clicking play on popular spotify playlists without seeking out the songs individually. No different than clicking a Christmas playlist.

Posted by: Scene 11th December 2017, 07:36 PM

If they did a Christmas chart, for 11 months of the year it'd be pointless. Plus if that's what everyone is listening to in December, the main chart should reflect that. It's only for 1 month of the year anyway. Long shall they remain! magic.gif

EDIT: too slow

I like seeing Christmas songs, but on THIS ridiculous level though? Really?

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 11th December 2017, 07:48 PM

Paloma is doing amazingly. I know she's always been a consistent and strong album seller but for the first time not one of the singles has made a particularly big impact so I was unsure if the album would just slide away quicker.

If it can stay in the top 10 over Christmas that should give it some bumper sales!

If I recall correctly Chris Rea would have likely got even higher last year but it got removed from Spotify in the final week before Christmas leading to it exiting the top 100 entirely while most/all of the other Xmas songs were peaking. Especially problematic for that particular song as it's one that usually picks up more than most in the couple of days right before Christmas for obvious reasons. Should be top 20 this year I'd think.

Good to see a bunch more Xmas songs being taken off ACR, I really like seeing the charts filled with Christmas songs each December tbh lol ~ Yass for The Pogues climbing, Elton in the top 20, Slade top 30 (higher than I thought they'd be as I thought they were underperforming a bit on Spotify, they're not even that far behind Wizzard for once) and Lennon and McCartney both top 40, hope they can all hold their positions as they're all amongst my faves of the Christmas classics. I'd love to see Coldplay make the top 40 again as well in the next couple of weeks.

Also good to see Ed re-overtaking Sam in the albums chart, I'd much rather have Ed as the Christmas #1 if it has to be one of the two. Paloma's album actually holding up really well so far beyond its big second week drop, could prove to be another high seller for her in the long run!

It's mainly due to streaming. Her singles have been getting good airplay, which looks to be having a positive effect on the album!

I think that's a problem too - but this is worse because they're getting in the way of current hits.

Does the chart really accurately reflect popularity if Spotify playlists have so much power?

I'd love to see Elton's Step Into Christmas finally break the top 20.

It is wonderful to see some Christmas songs on track for a new career peak, i am really enjoying this. I also believe Mariah Carey could be on for matching her original peak position this week and wonderful to see Leona Lewis on tracj to enter the top 40.

Wonderful to see Ed Sheeran looking like returning to the album number 1, he has his Strictly Come Dancing Promotion coming up to which will drive sales even further for him next week.

Great to see Paloma Faith on the increase too.

Would be an nightmare if you had to listen to the chart if you were a JW.

But people will bitch and moan about this with too many Xmas songs in the Top40.
There are too many there you go, I said it.

I'm pretty sure Jehovah's Witnesses think that Jesus is pretty groovy too.

Posted by: The Hit Parade 11th December 2017, 10:29 PM

Jehovah's Witnesses don't celebrate Christmas though, and the stricter ones won't involve themselves at all with it. My Mum used to work with one who would refuse to take Christmas cards to the postroom even if she was going there anyway.

YES Leona and YES Ariana. Christmas Queens.

It is looking like we will see new peaks for Step Into Christmas, Buble's It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas and Holly Jolly Christmas, Driving Home for Christmas, Santa Tell Me, Happy Xmas (War is Over), and Kylie's Santa Baby, all with another whole chart week before Christmas. I'd love to see Elton's Step Into Christmas finally break the top 20.

This one got to #2 on its original release after John Lennon's death so not quite!

It's kind of astonishing how Elton John's track has turned into one of the biggest Christmas classics (and seemingly increasing in popularity every year) after how low it peaked originally, same with Chris Rea.

Leona and Ariana to be this generation's Christmas icons! Ladies who can singgggg. laugh.gif ignore me and my festive spirit and cheer!

Paloma's deluxe version is the same price as the standard version in HMV. Which is probably enticing the more casual buyer. Really happy with her album doing so well though wub.gif

Regardless great she is at 60. Massive Spotify plays in the latest update.

Very true though a little odd seeing as we have the 12 days of Christmas upto the 6th Jan!

Over half the top 40 are still non-xmas related songs and i imagine the xmas stuff will start dropping again now we are past the weekend. I like seeing the songs in the chart though, it’s only for a few weeks and there are rarely loads of big single releases this time of year (except charity and xmas #1 contenders).

What I am dreading is right after Christmas when everyone plays their 2017 in music playlists and shape of you returns to the top 20 for another 2 months cry.gif

Posted by: house.martin 12th December 2017, 07:53 AM

shouldn't the chart reflect just whats most popular each week.. though a limit on the number of tracks from an act i think is necessary per week. i think Sunday's big snow probably helped the Xmas songs

I doubt it highly. Once she gets to number 1, other christmas songs who haven't hit 1 will overtake her. Plus the circumstances have to be just right as she (and many others) have a limited amount of weeks to achieve it.

The key players are still making the money off whatever sells. And it's less risky with upfront costs for those songs on dim and distant balance sheets. They'll possibly dominate for a few years, like X Factor did for a few years, and charity songs before that....until something new comes along and shifts the axis again (which will happen).

I'll enjoy it for a month each year while it lasts.

Don’t know what to make of Mariah repeaking at no2. I remember when she got there in the 90s but it seems bit crazy that she might end up at no2 again this week after all these years and largely down to streaming. It doesn’t seem right but at least the X factor winner has dropped!

Her streaming isn't quite good enough at the moment, currently just top 100 on Spotify. She did make it to #74 last year though so she should make the chart (but not top 50) again following Christmas.

Oh and I should add that I'm talking about her song 'Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)' - I know you love 'All Alone On Christmas', that hasn't made the Spotify top 200 this year yet.

Yeh I stated this in another topic last week - seems it's a lot to do with his iconic status in uk music as the years went by (Step was released in 1973) and so it's obvious inclusion in a lot of xmas collections over the years - it may also have been used in an ad in the 90s?

It wouldn’t surprise me if Mariah ends up at no1 in the singles next week - Christmas week. Ed’s sales are down quite a bit from last week & Mariah is streaming strong which is likely to continue into next week.

Ed is performing on the Strictly Come Dancing final so it would surprise me! Mariah's best (only) chance is the week after Christmas as that is when her streams will be highest - she will be fighting against gift card week, but that effect has collapsed in recent years.

Or Wham!

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 13th December 2017, 10:13 PM

It's 30k behind in streams today and top 10 combined on iTunes .

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn 13th December 2017, 10:18 PM

Pretty unbelievable that if Ed didn't exist, Mariah would actually be #1 23 years later. It will still probably happen one way or another any year now anyway.

Yes, however sales down around 20% compared with the same period this time last year...

2017 - Midweeks 13 December
1 ÷- Ed Sheeran (50,171)
2 The Thrill Of It All- Sam Smith (43,773)
3 Beautiful Trauma- P!nk (34,258)
4 Together Again- Alfie Boe & Michael Ball (31,357)
5 Human- Rag N Bone Man (28,817)

2016 - Midweeks 14 December
1 Michael Ball & Alfie Boe - Together (66,822)
2 The Rolling Stones - Blue & Lonesome (49,887)
3 Little Mix - Get Weird (44,412)
4 Elvis Presley - The Wonder of You (40,812)
5 Olly Murs - 24 HRS (35,120)

Is the little mix album not supposed to be glory days or have you got your year wrong ?

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 13th December 2017, 11:18 PM

It's just an error I think - Ball/Boe dominated the albums last year!

Posted by: Hadji 13th December 2017, 11:37 PM

Seeing as Camila was at #46 on Monday’s update, I was expecting her to climb a bit and maybe scrape into the top 40 on Friday

Posted by: Dexton 14th December 2017, 01:56 AM

Almost half of the Top 40 is made up of Christmas songs, for the first time in a long while right?

Posted by: dennispennis123 14th December 2017, 02:20 AM

If it wasn't for Ed Sheean re-releasing a single, Mariah Carey would be number one this week and probably Christmas number one next week, crazy times!

Posted by: Crazy Christmas 14th December 2017, 07:57 AM

Eminem's album has leaked and is said to be very good. Think good sales.

Ed Sheeran ruining Mariahs chance of finally having AIWFC as #1 has gotta be the biggest chart travesty ever. Poor Queen of Christmas!

I do agree with this comment, and this is coming from an Ed Sheeran fan.

Would be so exciting if Adele released her Fastlove cover tomorrow!

Posted by: dancember 14th December 2017, 05:42 PM

I'd love that. We'd get a proper race to Christmas number one like back in the good ol' days instead of it just being a certain Ed Sheeran victory. Plus I'd love to see the smug look on his face if he loses. biggrin.gif

Posted by: Bjork 14th December 2017, 05:50 PM

if adele releases, there will be no competition, her cover of fast love will be massive
especially since i read it could be a charity single for the Grenfell Tower victims

Posted by: M4NG0 14th December 2017, 06:29 PM

For what it's worth I'd prefer Mariah to be Xmas #1 over Ed Sheeran or Adele. As much as I like Ed, I don't like the way he's gone about getting the Xmas #1, it feels like such a cynical ploy with the Beyonce remix. And if Adele did release tomorrow (which I highly doubt she will) that would feel just as cynical. I prefer more organic Xmas #1s, 'Stay Another Day' being possibly the most perfect example of that.

I didn’t know he was performing on strictly as I don’t follow the show. Well in that case, he will be no1 then unless something incredible changes at the last minute!

Posted by: SM351 14th December 2017, 06:39 PM

Mariah will definitely get to number one in the next few years. Her streaming is so strong - on a year when Xmas day falls on a Wednesday she'll have a massive chance.

Hopefully by then the OCC will have changed the rules and created a catalogue chart. tongue.gif

They need to do that

why would adele releasing tomorrow be cynical? then all songs and artists aiming at #1 are cynical too

I'm sure East 17 released Stay Another Day to have a crack at the xmas no1 at the time tbh. The fact they were a British band probably helped them ease ahead of Mariah if anything as they were able to perform/promo in the uk at the time.

This got me thinking - does anyone know the sales difference between both songs from Dec 94?

East 17 were doing around 170K/week, and Mariah was on around 85K on her first week at number 2, and then 105K the week after - no idea about Christmas week I'm afraid (was not reported in Music Week).

Posted by: ChristmasEve201 14th December 2017, 08:00 PM

Thanks - very impressive sales!

Posted by: Envoirment 14th December 2017, 08:17 PM

Isn't Ed Sheeran releasing a version of "Perfect" with Andrea Bocelli as well tomorrow? I would love Adele to release her "Fastlove" cover and beat him to Christmas #1. Will be interesting to see how the Wham campaign does though, could surprise!

Adele is a rare type of A Lister we get these days, She always puts people before her and so down to earth and she really truly deserves her success not only as a talented artist but the fantastic person she is

According to OCC, Mariah sold 100,000 in Christmas week and East 17 managed 160,000 (assuming these are their recalculated figures). http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/20-years-of-mariah-s-all-i-want-for-christmas-is-you-__7820/

Did East 17 have much promo that week in terms of tv or signings?

Adele could release at midnight next Wed. and still be No.1 by a mile on Friday!!!

BIB - Agree 100%
It's really cheeky and pretty sell-out tbh. I know Ed Sheeran is kinda the poster boy for that anyway but still...

To have a crack maybe, but they didn't go about it cynically like Ed. It was released in mid-November for a start.
