I don't think either sales figures are that bad for what is going to be only 1 days sale (Friday) for each album. Tomorrow's update will be interesting though.
That said, Emeli has waited too long to release a follow-up album. She should really have had a new album out this time last year. |

I'm not sure what Emeli is supposed to have going against her but then I've not really listened to her material. My personal belief is just that a large number of the people who bought her début just didn't actually like it that much. It did amazingly well around every holiday that people typically buy presents for others with (so primarily Christmas and Mother's Day) and I am assuming that most of the people who received it didn't really care for it or Emeli in general. If you remember just how strong her presence was in 2012 and 2013, you get an idea of just how perfect Our Version of Events was as an uninspired present choice. "My mum liked that one Emeli ballad, I'll get the album for her". Good news for her if you believe my theory is that she should still sell a lot over Christmas, and I wouldn't be surprised if her second week drop is pretty small. The apparent lack of hits on the album should give her trouble after Q4 though. |

The gap has been too long for Emeli but also she needed a stronger come back single. Hurts is nice but doesn't stand out enough to make people want to invest in her new album.

The apparent lack of hits on the album should give her trouble after Q4 though. This is a great point and its something i think really does effect sales of a follow up album. Many people probably bought Emelis first album based on singles and may not have enjoyed the remainder of the album, this has often put me off buying an album by an artist in the past, or made me more cautious to buying an album. This is the one side of streaming, an access to music online that i actually like as you can hear an album before you purchase. Nowadays when i buy albums i know they are good. This factor for Emeli plus the singles she has released are weak of the new album plus she has left it too long. I dont buy into people didnt buy Breathing Underwater as they were confused by what she performed on X Factor and bought Hurts instead as Hurts didnt get that huge of a boost, hurts also got snippet plays on her intro so that may have influenced those sales too. Breathing Underwater i thought was dull and forgettable and i was really disappointed with the song. I do like Emeli Sande, i didnt buy her first album but i bought a few singles. With Olly i do like him and am happy for him to get anther number 1 but im not a huge fan of anything i have heard from his new album and have held back on buying it. |

Also the fact that Emeli is plain boring... but that also applies to Olly. Dear Darlin' is the only song I like from him

There's also the angle that in the streaming era, female artists in general seem to be finding it a lot harder to break through, unless they're already a huge name with a solid and diverse fanbase (ex. Adele, Little Mix).
Emeli may just be the first B-tier female album-artist who's released in this era, and thus gets to get to put this to the test. I'd be interested to see how Paloma Faith's next release does, or the upcoming Kate Bush album in a few weeks' time. Wee bit of research says Norah Jones, Katie Melua and KT Tunstall's recent releases have all been top 10s but not top 5s, as a comparison. I also think Emeli was lucky to be in the right place at the right time with the last era. Essentially all of her singles except Heaven and Next To Me were pure ballads, and she managed to do decently well with all of them even so. How many artists release 3 ballads from an album and see them all go top 20 nowadays?? |

Emeli was also lucky with her last era in that she had some good features that were big hits, read all about it with professor green and underneath your beautiful with labrinth were both big hits. It is worth remembering that those artists were also much bigger back than so that also brought interest to Emeli Sande and her album picked up sales on the back of those hits. Like many others if she can get that one big hit it would kick sales into action for her album but right now i cant see it happening.

I actually quite like "Hurts", it's grown on me with each listen so I'm really surprised it's not been her "Rolling in the Deep" or "White Flag" like I expected it to be.
I will confess I loved Emeli when she first came out - her appearance on Chipmunk's "Diamond Rings" was where I first heard her - but just through overexposure during the 2012 Olympics and anything that warranted another airing of "Next to Me" or "Clown" or "Read All About It, Pt II" I got tired of her pretty quickly. Although I get the impression from recent interviews she's not really wanting that kind of overexposure she had with "Our Version of Events". Dido was the same after "No Angel" and "Life for Rent"' came out, still happy to release albums but not on the scale they took off to. "Thank You" being sampled on "Stan" for Eminem was to her what Emeli being on "Read All About It" for Professor Green was and as has been mentioned above that was all about timing. |
