Are there any songs that you heard a remix of first before listening to the original? Did the real original end up being better or something of a disappointment?

I'm aware some of the biggest-selling hits of all time have been remixes (Missing, Cheerleader etc) so I think of 'remix' as being just an alternative version to the main version everyone knows, otherwise the list is probably in the hundreds tongue.gif

A few that come to mind for me:

* I first heard 'Wide Open Space' by Mansun as its Perfecto remix, and thought for a while that Mansun were a techno group - was quite surprised to later discover them nothing of the sort! Like both versions equally though.

* Amy Winehouse's 'You Know I'm No Good' I first heard as the Ghostface Killah remix, which is basically the original with him rapping in place of the verses - I wasn't that aware of her at the time and assumed the rapper was the lead artist and the singer was the feature act. Still feels odd to hear the original as I still think of it with the rapping.

* And U2's 'Even Better Than The Real Thing' I first heard as the remix that was released later (charting higher than the original) - I knew U2 had gone more 'dance' for a while in the 90s but I remember being a bit astonished they'd gone this far down the dance path, finding out it was a remix made it a little more understandable.

Any more?

Un-Break My Heart by Toni Braxton. I remember hearing the remix before the original album version. Both versions are quite excellent.

^ Goodness, it will be 20 years ago next month when it was released. Where has the time gone?

In 2005 I heard Pump Up The Jam - D.O.N.S. and Technotronic before I had heard the original. Also from that year Dancing DJs and Roxette - Fading Like a Flower and High Again (High With Emotion) by Thomas Falke.

Oh and Thunder In My Heart Again of course in 2006.

More recently, Summertime Sadness, If I Lose Myself and Be Right there (a horrible remix the later one is sick2.gif )

DJ Sakin & Friends - Protect Your Mind (For The Love Of A Princess) [Lange Remix]

the original version which was a UK #4 hit sounds really weak in comparison.

Is that the one without vocals? I remember at the time MTV and The Box played that version but then the single version had vocals and was very confused

Delta Goodrem "Born To Try" - I had downloaded the Graham Stack remix when it was #1 in Australia and thought it was great. Was really disappointed when it came out in the UK and realised the proper version was a ballad!

Indeed. The vocals and slow bit that are in the original really kill the vibe of the song, and the Lange version has a greater punch to it.

Sing It Back by Moloko is one for me, I heard the original for the first time this year and was surprised by how different it is. I actually really like both versions now though.

Lykke Li's 'I Follow Rivers' comes to mind. Wasn't initially aware it was a remix I was hearing all over Irish radio back in 2011, and I'd still favour The Magician's version over the original.

Gorillaz 19/2000 is the main one, always thought the Soulchild remix was actually the original and was very surprised how different they were. I do obviously prefer the remix, but the original is a wonderfully chill-out song too.

Think I heard Kanye West's Stronger before Daft Punk's Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger which seems really bizarre now but guess seems quite plausible back when I didn't really pay attention to music at all! I also heard the Buzz Junkies radio edit of The Saturdays' What About Us which I still vastly prefer to the original as for quite a while I thought that was the proper song! There's some obvious ones where the remix is way more popular than the original that I've heard (ie. I Took A Pill In Ibiza, Prayer In C, Heads Will Roll) etc.

Kelly Rowland's Work. Heard the Freemasons Remix for ages, obviously, and only heard the original a few months back.

a bit like in the I Took a Pill to Ibiza case

Two Kelis and Missy Elliott ones spring to mind:

Basement Jaxx remix of “4 My People”

Breach remix of “Rumble”

Both originals were a disappointment compared to the remixes, although I did like both.
