The nominees for BBC Radio 1's Sound of 2023 (I believe it changed from being the 'BBC Sound of...' last year) are out!

Asake
Big Piig
Cat Burns
Dylan
FLO
Fred again..
Gabriels
Nia Archives
piri & tommy
Rachel Chinouriri

I can see it being Cat Burns, but my pick would be piri & tommy or the fabulous Gabriels - I'm a little surprised to see them on R1's radar tbh!

All 3 of the BRITs Rising Star nominees showing up here too then. I wouldn't be surprised if Cat Burns wins both of them but really hope not, she seems so far like an archetypal TikTok era one hit wonder and it was not a good one hit (but I guess shouldn't write her off entirely just yet, the one other song I've heard from her so far was a fair bit better than 'go' at least).

Have generally been a fan of 6/10 of these from what I've heard so far - Dylan is not for me, Rachel Chinouriri I think I only know that one song from BJSC which was just ok, Gabriels are the only one I've not yet heard anything from (as far as I remember). So a pretty good list on the whole. Fred again.. is my fave but he already feels much too established to be on here so rooting for either Nia Archives or piri & tommy to win, happy to see Asake there too as he's the most consistently enjoyable artist from the current afrobeats wave for me. FLO to round out my top 5. Biig Piig has had a few big tunes too but don't think she is as consistent as the others.

Fred again.. ??? Maybe 2/3 years ago yeah but not now surely.

Here for a piri & tommy win pls

Gabriels very much on Clara Amfo and Arielle Free's radar all this year so not a surprise really

Fred Again doesn't need the exposure of a Sound Of win seeing as he's a big name already, seems odd that he's on the shortlist. So likewise I'd like a Nia Archives or Piri & Tommy win

anyone but Cat Burns, why would they even nominate a 1-tik tok hit wonder that no one cares about, no matter how much they push

Hoping for FLO but as long as they make the shortlist I won’t be too bothered if don’t win .

Think the UK needs a new girl group so can see Flo being pushed a lot.

Gabriel’s album is brilliant so that would be my personal choice along with Biig Piig!

An actually exciting list again though, even if I sighed when I heard Fred again was nominated here.

Big Piig, FLO and Fred Again.. are the ones I've most consistently enjoyed, but I'd agree the latter feels established enough already, so rooting for one of the other two

Ah that's great to hear, I wasn't expecting them to make the Top 5 tbh.

Gabriels are great - they've already had 2 Top 10s on my personal chart. “Love and Hate in a Different Time” from early 2021 and “One and Only” (#7) from this year! Not sure if Bré would be a fan tho.. it's kinda 60s/70s influence soul mostly.

* when I say 'this year' I ofc mean 2022!

^ just had a listen to those two songs, may as well give them a chance since they were the only act on the list I hadn't heard anything from yet - I actually really liked 'Love And Hate In A Different Time' (although it was hard to find the song on its own on YouTube laugh.gif), quite an intriguing and unique mix of the retro soul sound with some more futuristic elements! So that's definitely piqued some interest. Wasn't as keen on 'One And Only' but it was alright, just not one I'd go out of my way to hear again.

Cat Burns is #4!

I think FLO are looking to be the most likely winner atm.

Good on Cat. I'm not sure, i think Fred might be a dark horse and snatch it.

I can’t see it tbh. I know PinkPantheress winning last year was a very cheap move, but Fred would just be ridiculous given his success already.
