Artist announcement in early October!

http://escxtra.com/2016/09/19/the-netherlands-artist-announcement-expected-in-early-october/

QUOTE
Back in May, Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS confirmed that The Netherlands would participate in the 2017 Eurovision Song Contest. However, today more news came to light with Dutch website Omroep Brabant revealing that AVROTROS are due to announce the artist that will represent the country in Kyiv as quickly as “early October“.

This isn’t beyond the realms of possibility as since The Netherlands began selecting their entries internally back in 2013, their artist announcements have all occurred around this time of year. Anouk was revealed as their 2013 representative in October 2012, The Common Linnets and Trijntje Oosterhuis were revealed as their 2014 and 2015 representatives In November 2013 and 2014 respectively and Douwe Bob was confirmed as the 2016 Dutch representative back in September 2015. This change in selection process has been a massive success for the country scoring a 2nd place, 9th place and 11th place finish since the change was put in place. Prior to this, The Netherlands had suffered eight consecutive non-qualifications.

Daniel Dekker, the man in charge of the Eurovision team at AVROTROS, revealed to Omroep Brabant that the decision for 2017 has been different compared to recent years:

“[THIS TIME]WE HAVE THE LUXURY THAT WE CAN CHOOSE FROM SEVERAL GREAT ARTISTS. WE CAN MAKE A STRATEGIC CHOICE.”

The Dutch website also discusses the likelihood of three-piece girl group O’G3NE being selected. The former Junior Eurovision competitors have been rumoured as potential Eurovision representatives ever since their victory in The Voice of Holland in December 2014. Over the past few months, these rumours have been stronger than ever before although O’G3NE admitted earlier this summer that they were yet to be contacted by AVROTROS. The website claims that the broadcaster does believe selecting O’G3NE would have benefits, a key one being that they have experienced Junior Eurovision before and that such an experience would “work to their advantage”.

I'm quite loving the resurgence of The Netherlands in Eurovision and interested to see if they stick to their now tried and tested country/MOR pop trend.

I hope we don't, I want something different

They seem to be the only country that are consistently in my bottom (well, "Birds" was tolerable). I hope they break the pattern for 2017.

(Hoping for something that wasnt on the album tho)

Hmm, they are talented girls but their material has been very average from what I've heard of it. Being a girl band already goes against them, they will need a song miles better than anything they've ever come up with before. When was the last time a girl band did well? Serebro 10 years ago? Honestly this screams non-qualification, but I'm hoping to be surprised!

More Junior Eurovision graduates though! *.*

This could be good, I enjoyed the album much more than I expected to.

I knew they must have been talented to win The Voice, but I didn't realise they were THIS good. I wonder if they should go against the Eurovision girlband stereotype of mid to uptempo pop songs (Song #1, Ljubav Je Svuda, Say It Again, Disappear, 100% Te Ljubam, Let's Get Loud) and just give us a massive ballad?

I watched their voice performances ages ago when looking for BJSC potentials. Their original stuff is okay but I know they will be given a fab track for esc!

They've announced that the writers of the song they've got is written by their dad and one of the girls' boyfriends. I've got no idea if this is bad news or good news but google tells me they've written for them before so it makes sense at least.

Posted by: Ryan. 17th February 2017, 05:38 PM

I was hoping they'd get away from their family members writing their songs again, they always seem to write their songs and none of their previous singles have quite hit the mark.

Apparently it's a ballad. I was all for a ballad originally as you can see earlier in this thread but with the make-up of entries being as they are, we could've done with a female pop stomper. Nevertheless, hopefully it's a good ballad that really shows off their voices like their Clown cover does.

YEah they shoulda gotten a different team. Their father really isn;t a great songwriter.

Lowkey disappointed they went with a ballad, altho it is what they excel at, it's another slow song for us

Posted by: *Tim 2nd March 2017, 10:46 AM

Called Lights and Shadows and its a powerballad with a buildup

Posted by: Cameron 2nd March 2017, 11:16 AM

This reminds me of Hold On by Wilson Phillips

I was thinking this as well, it's VERY Wilson Phillips

Posted by: *Tim 3rd March 2017, 03:01 PM

omg poor us, I knew they were gonna do this type of song

Posted by: Jonjo 3rd March 2017, 09:53 PM

It is indeed very Wilson Phillips! It could actually be mistaken as one of their songs!

It's nice. But I don't think it's strong enough. I think the chorus/hook is far too wordy for a melody like that, imo.

Live performance:

Vocals really are flawless, I think the juries could just drag them through to the final. I'm really liking the song personally, has everything an anthemic ballad needs and I love the harmonies. Only criticism is that it is a little bit throwback and it fishes from the same pond as Anja does in the same half of the same semi-final.

A song like this was their best chance of qualifying though as their previous uptempo singles have all been somewhat lacking, mainly production-wise. You can't go very wrong when producing a ballad so this has worked to their strength.

It's nice enough. It could grow I guess but I think it'll be sort of middle of my rankings and get a bit lost amongst me loving other tracks.

Inspiration confirmed.

Doubt they can win the contest. But with good show girls can reach top 10 or maybe even top 5.

Posted by: Liаm 30th March 2017, 03:34 AM

I am loving this now, such a grower! I'm really starting to think this could dark horse top 5 in a Common Linnets way if they nail the vocal and staging, but I suppose you can say that about a lot of entries laugh.gif

I am no great expert in musicology but I am usually pretty good with ESC and I like this one a lot. We knew they were good with harmonies and they show this off well whilst being modern enough without being too EDM or too American. I really like this one, I like how it builds steadily to a strong conclusion, I almost really like the atmosphere, the sound palate and the conclusion and think it should do well, especially as it is in the weaker Semi. It also grows on you which is a definite positive. As long as the staging is good - I will be a happy lady.

Also, I really like that the Netherlands is doing what they should be doing, selecting talent and then throwing some resource at them - sure the video is simple, but stylishly simple. The first Lucie Jones video looked like it was shot in a broom cupboard. They have learned from past failures and are developing a reputation for being professionalism, baring the odd hick-up. Between them and Belgium, I don't know who I am more happy with this year. I can just imagine how happy Denise on Wiwiblogs is with this entry.

O'G3NE - you have a fan here.
