Monday 1st January
BBC 1
14:05 Film: Shrek Forever After - 2.16m (16.3%)
15:30 Blue Planet II - 2.38m (15.4%)
17:00 Film: Maleficent - 4.03m (21.2%) [Peak: 4.81m (23.1%) at 18:20]
18:30 BBC News - 5.82m (26.7%)
18:45 BBC Regional News - 6.50m (28.6%)
18:55 Grandpa's Great Escape - 4.85m (20.0%) [Peak: 5.91m (23.7%) at 19:55]
20:00 EastEnders - 6.56m (26.1%) [Peak: 7.17m (28.8%) at 20:55]
21:00 McMafia - 5.57m (24.1%) [Peak: 5.97m (25.4%) at 21:05]
22:00 Mrs Brown's Boys - 5.53m (27.6%) [Peak: 5.71m (29.4%) at 22:25]
22:30 BBC News - 3.99m (23.5%)
22:50 BBC Regional News - 3.49m (23.3%)
23:00 Film: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - 1.38m (19.5%)

ITV (inc. +1)
15:30 Film: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - 1.17m (7.1%)
17:45 Paul O'Grady: For the Love of Dogs - 2.24m (11.0%) [Peak: 3.01m (13.7%) at 18:35]
18:40 ITV News - 3.28m (14.5%)
19:00 Emmerdale - 5.65m (23.5%) [Peak: 6.12m (25.0%) at 19:20]
19:30 Coronation Street - 6.69m (26.8%) [Peak: 7.30m (28.2%) at 19:50]

22:45 ITV News - 1.73m (11.9%)
23:05 The Keith and Paddy Picture Show - 421k (4.0%)

Channel 4 (inc. +1)
19:40 The Great Festive Bake Off - 2.59m (10.3%)

Maleficent did better than last year's NYD tea-time film (Monsters University with 3.49m (18.6%)) and Eastenders is up 570k on last year's NYD special.

McMafia doesn't compare to Sherlock's 8.08m (32.8%) but Sherlock is established and faced less competition. It'll be the rating for tonight's episode that will determine how well it is likely to do.

Mrs Brown's Boys down 1.18m on last year's NYD special - I imagine it'll still time-shift well, however.

ITV had a much healthier night than last year's NYD. Spectre is down on the 6.33m (28%) that Skyfall premiered with on Christmas Eve 2014, but up on the 4.73m that Quantum of Solace premiered with on 26 March 2011.

I do think Maleficent would've been better on Christmas Day than Cinderella - one of the many odd scheduling decisions! Nice to see EE back up on last year's low rating and McMafia did decently up against Spectre too.

McMafia seems like the type of show that will grow as it goes along and do better with timeshift. Will be interesting to see how it does tonight!

So Celebrity Big Brother is back tonight, any predictions of how it may do?

Previous Channel 5 CBB Winter Series Openers (exc./inc. +1):
2012: 3.46m/3.54m (15.8%/16.2%) [Peak: 4.34m (19.6%)]
2013: 3.37m/3.55m (15.1%/15.9%) [Peak: 4.32m (19.9%)]
2014: 3.18m/3.40m (14.0%/15.0%) [Peak: 4.17m (18.3%)]
2015: 3.09m/3.27m (15.4%/16.3%) [Peak: 3.90m]
2016: 2.67m/2.80m (13.2%/13.9%)
2017: 2.14m/2.32m (10.9%/11.9%) [Peak: 2.55m (11.3%)]

I think it'll do better than last year but not by too much; I'll go 2.5m including +1.

There should be a decent audience around tonight as it's 2nd Jan, so I'd expect it to be at least slightly up on last year!

I feel there’s a bit more hype for CBB this time, it’s been posted about on sites where it’s usually ignored (e.g. BBC) but I don’t think it’ll be too high, the promo only really started last week. 2.5m sounds fair.

I’m guessing it’s because Cinderella is the ultimate inoffensive family-friendly sugar-coated film and they didn’t want to focus on a villain on Christmas Day!

Tuesday 2nd January
BBC 1
19:00 EastEnders - 5.98m (26.7%)
20:00 Holby City - 4.22m (20.2%)
21:00 McMafia - 4.84m (23.0%)

ITV (inc. +1)
19:00 Emmerdale - 5.74m (25.6%)
20:00 The Greatest TV Moments of All Time - 2.24m (10.7%)

Channel 5 (inc. +1)
21:00 Celebrity Big Brother - 2.07m (10.5%) [Peak: 2.48m (14.1%) at 22:10]

Emmerdale and Eastenders almost neck-and-neck in a clash yet still achieving good figures just shows that the BBC should consider this move in the future should they be looking at another Emmerdale clash for Eastenders, given the former has the advantage of +1.

McMafia loses 730k from yesterday which isn't great, especially when it faces a clash with Vera this Sunday and that will have an hours start.

CBB Launch takes another drop year-on-year but gets a similar peak. At least CBB is still known to grow throughout the series if it gets a good reception.

oops that’s tragic, lower than most Summer CBBs have got and even lower than civillian ones aside from the last two years or so!

It's nice to see EastEnders come out on top in an Emmerdale clash for once (helped by it not starting half way through!) Pretty awful for CBB, it had every chance to start higher this series with the early start.

20:00 EastEnders - 6.16m (27.5%)
20:30 Would I Lie to You? - 2.75m (12.2%)
21:00 Miriam's Big American Adventure - 2.77m (13.2%)

ITV (inc. +1)
17:00 The Chase - 4.44m (29.4%) [Peak: 5.42m (32.1%)]
-
19:00 Emmerdale - 6.52m (32.4%)

21:00 Girlfriends - 5.19m (24.8%)

Channel 5 (inc. +1)

That's the highest ever rating for a normal edition of The Chase! Pretty good for the soaps, even Eastenders achieving 6m+ out of slot, and a solid start for Girlfriends.

Can't believe Emmerdale is now a big3 soap and bigger than Eastenders!! Corrie really does have the most popular soap title under wraps now - its main rival is Emmerdale these days, and ir will never clash with that!

omg that CBB rating is what a civillian series should be getting. I swear that’s lower than even last summer’s CBB!

That's a decent audience for the Liverpool v Everton game. The FA Cup can still get the viewers for the right tie.

Not bad for The Voice, much smaller decline than the past couple of years and the share is in fact up.

Was expecting better for Hard Sun - Taboo opened with 4.79m in the Saturday January slot last year, for instance. Doesn't give it much room to drop, plus the full series is now on iPlayer.

That's a decent audience for the Liverpool v Everton game. The FA Cup can still get the viewers for the right tie.

Much better than the 4.21m (20.2%) that the first FA Cup game of 2017 rated (Friday 6th).
