36 ** 177 Caroline Polachek - So Hot You're Hurting My Feelings

A LOT OF SONGS in this round and only the multichart year-end positions to go by as an indicator means we're in for a weird set of results, as ever with the most recent year. Amazingly four songs that were projected to finish top 20 in fact fall well outside of even the AQ zone - including 'Ritual' from the top ten unfortunately as well as 'Circles' (surprised at this, I thought even here it was very liked, but I'm not big on it), 'How Do You Sleep?' and 'Find U Again' (oddly this drastically 'falls' but Mark Ronson's other song in here is safely an AQ). The worst performing auto qualifiers we lose are 'So Am I' and 'Liar' which seemingly people have gone off of since making them do well enough in the Multichart to begin with - the former is the biggest flop of the entire game going 30-122, skinny legends only!!1 It's also not a good year for Tiësto at all as his other AQ 'God Is A Dancer' drops off to 70, and as for Mabel - she also drops off big with 'Mad Love' down to 59. Both Mabel and Ava do have one song at least going top 20, so they shouldn't lose any sleep over this tonight. Speaking of which 'I'm So Tired' is also out, down to 50, bringing along with it 'Harmony Hall', 'Ride It', 'Truth Hurts', 'Mother's Daughter' and what is the biggest travesty of them all 'Heaven' dropping 26-56 – still Avicii's biggest song from the year so he won't be AQing with anything tonight. It's mostly new entries elsewhere as the Multichart only goes down to 75 and a fair few songs from it were missed out altogether. The highest of these in this section comes from Caroline Polachek who is only 3 points away from AQing. More pleasingly CamelPhat improve on their position with 'Breathe' up to #44, a new version of which is to be taken from their album that may or may not ever be coming out (maybe if we give Sony a RotD win, it'll convince them to actually let them release this album).

Next Year's AQs... but not progressing any further tongue.gif

35 06 180 Shawn Mendes & Camila Cabello - Senorita
34 18 182 Taylor Swift - You Need To Calm Down
33 31 185 Normani - Motivation
32 38 185 Lizzo - Good As Hell
31 56 186 Meduza, Becky Hill & Goodboys - Lose Control
30 41 189 Ariana Grande - Break Up With Your Girlfriend, I'm Bored
29 19 191 Sam Smith & Normani - Dancing With a Stranger
28 10 192 Jax Jones (feat. Ella Henderson) - This Is Real
27 ** 193 Taylor Swift - Cruel Summer
26 28 197 Lana Del Rey - Doin' Time
25 13 198 Calvin Harris & Rag'n'Bone Man - Giant
24 24 202 Mark Ronson (feat. Lykke Li) - Late Night Feelings
23 43 203 Meduza & Goodboys - Piece of Your Heart
22 14 210 Lewis Capaldi - Someone You Loved
21 70 212 Georgia - About Work the Dancefloor

Just about managing to AQ again is 'Señorita' which was projected for an easy SF slot, so I won't moan too much about it still being this high. Lizzo has a small switch around with 'Good As Hell' now replacing 'Truth Hurts' in the lower third of this section, now joined by both Meduza tracks which gain from their projected placements... yay! 'Piece of Your Heart' was very close to going top 20 too, maybe we can let it happen next year. There are still three 'new entries' to come but the one that's in this section comes from Taylor Swift which despite not being that big of a hit officially now leapfrogs YNTCD and Me! (which seemingly Buzzjack prefer to forget about seeing as it wasn't nominated). Ariana Grande also gains an AQ with BUWYG,IB and surprisingly Georgia lands very high with AWTD – frustratingly for its fans it just so happens to have lost a SF slot on tiebreak, on the first occasion I've had to use tiebreak rules.

Semi-Finalists dance.gif

20 75 212 Lil Nas X - Old Town Road
19 46 213 Miley Cyrus - Slide Away
18 73 215 Selena Gomez - Lose You To Love Me
17 23 216 Ariana Grande - 7 Rings
16 03 218 Tones and I - Dance Monkey
15 11 227 Taylor Swift - Lover
14 20 227 Billie Eilish - Bury a Friend
13 09 232 Dominic Fike - 3 Nights
12 ** 253 Harry Styles - Adore You
11 57 270 Lizzo - Juice
10 36 282 Charli XCX & Christine and the Queens - Gone
09 05 301 Sigala & Becky Hill - Wish You Well
08 07 302 Jax Jones & Martin Solveig present Europa with Madison Beer - All Day and Night
07 02 302 Billie Eilish - Bad Guy
06 ** 304 Billie Eilish - Everything I Wanted

And it is 'Old Town Road' that wins the tiebreak having received two more votes than Georgia. I'm not really fussed either way but it would've been nice for her as the underdog to take it - although Lil Nas X actually finished slightly lower on the Multichart it has the big advantage of being a huge hit of course. Also posting massive gains are Miley Cyrus with what was her best solo effort in years before (future 2020 RotD auto-finalist) 'Midnight Sky' happened, Selena Gomez with her surprisingly good comeback effort and Lizzo whose 'Juice' leapfrogs her two bigger hits. Three of the top five lose what would've been their auto finalist status, 'Dance Monkey' was even in danger of falling out of the top 20 before last minute votes saved it. 'Wish You Well' and 'Bad Guy' however are still top 10 with Billie also being joined by 'Everything I Wanted' (a new entry due to its 'recency') and 'Bury a Friend'. The other 'too new for the year-end Multichart' hit 'Adore You' enters at #12 to be the biggest hit here for Harry Styles. And finally the big climb I'm sure many will be pleased about comes from Charli & Christine who manage a top 10 slot with 'Gone' – the only semi-finalist to have not been a top 40 hit but not a surprising climb either given its fanbase.

Direkt Till Finalen yahoo.gif

05 39 319 Ava Max - Sweet But Psycho
04 04 405 Mabel - Don't Call Me Up
03 01 413 Kygo & Whitney Houston - Higher Love
02 17 439 Katy Perry - Never Really Over
01 ** 577 Dua Lipa - Don't Start Now

Which means we have a very predictable and Buzzjack-stereotypical top five, but a great top five nonetheless. Dua Lipa smashed all competition with 'Don't Start Now' which I'm sure Buzzjack will be nostalgic for 10 years into the future (I could definitely see this winning the whole thing a few times, maybe even this year). Katy Perry's last big hit proves to be her most popular here too landing in at #2 with the Multichart winners Kygo & Whitney in third and Mabel and Ava Max's big hits rounding out the top 5 proving that Buzzjack are in fact here for them but only for their big hit.

Forgot to vote in these and spent longer out than I anticipated this evening. I'd have definitely moved Vampire Weekend and Georgia into the next sections, and potentially Bad Guy, Late Night Feelings and Now I'm In It too sleep.gif

YES YES YES YES! After Teenage Dream dropping out of 2010's AQ, I've had very low hopes for Katy so this has made me so happy.

How did 'Circles' do that badly, I thought that song was actually pretty widely liked on here? And I could swear the much less BJ-friendly 'rockstar' did pretty well in this last year?

Pretty predictable results in general, happy that 'everything i wanted', 'Gone' and 'Lover' are in the top 20 though (especially 'Gone' for finally not being paid dust in a BuzzJack thing for once). So close to Caroline Polachek pulling off an unexpected AQ though! Beyond that some of my other less mainstream faves have done pretty respectably (looking at CHVRCHES, 100 gecs and BROCKHAMPTON, especially the latter considering Jade didn't vote here and she would presumably have given them pretty high points as well).

Interesting results there, predictable but not bad top five and glad to see a lot of tunes including the three Billie Eilish ones through to the semi-finals.

I'm more amazed by how Bring Me The Horizon might have had an AQ if she voted! ohmy.gif

disturbing lack of 100 gecs in the upper echelons, nominating half their album next year x

I think Sweet But Psycho, which I am a big fan of, is the only one of the top five that I know I've heard laugh.gif I guess I will now, I always pay a lot more attention to the songs that get through.

I was kind of surprised I was one of only 2 voters for Fontaines D.C. laugh.gif Thanks to the 2 other people who supported 'Good Things Fall Apart' ~ Poor 'So Am I' with that 'fall' compared to the multichart. WD Hatchie near top 100 with almost all her points coming from the few Australian voters in this kink.gif 'money machine' top 80 *.* and 'Bags' too, wasn't sure how much of a following to expect it to have here. Also a good result for Grimes!

Wow 'Losing It' top 60! WD 'STFU!' cheer.gif I know she's popular but considering that it sounds more like Limp Bizkit's 'Rollin' (to me) than it does any of her other songs (that I've heard) I'm impressed. I listened to that White Lies song and liked it but didn't know it was anything popular! Aww 'Nightmare' so close to the top 35 but that's probably higher than I'd have expected (and a much better chart success to ROTD popularity than 'Without Me' I guess).

WD 'About Work The Dancefloor'. Good to see 'Cruel Summer' ahead of 'You Need To Calm Down'. I'm surprised 'Lose You To Love Me' is that popular as it feels like it fell off the map fast after making a big debut. Also interesting at 'Dance Monkey' considering how controversial it seemed. Most pleased to see '3 Nights' and reshuffle icon 'All Day And Night' top 15 happy.gif Wow at 'everything i wanted' beating 'bad guy'!

Totally right at a predictable top 5 kink.gif But good to see Ava and Katy as part of it!

I like how well much of it lines up! 'Circles' and 'Here With Me' being big exceptions - the latter doesn't really surprise me but I would've expected better for 'Circles' here; this makes it seem like it wasn't many people's favourite which is plausible but not the first song I'd have predicted that for (unlike, say, 'Ride It'). 'Vossi Bop' also seems to have surprisingly evaporated quite a bit of its popularity. 'Dance Monkey' improving here does make sense without anyone who hates it being able to drag it down. Impressed at the consistent high ranks that '3 Nights' has managed happy.gif
