Damn, I hated that Swedish entry, soooo cheesy in such an awful way without anything redeeming (much like Scooch)! 2007 wasn't a good year.
The Dutch entry was okay in terms of 2001, but another weak year really. 2002 was worse though! Actually really like that Maltese entry! So glad this is back btw This post has been edited by Hans: Sep 3 2018, 08:07 PM |

Baffling that Firelight song came 6th with juries. I know they love Malta but sheesh...they usually hate the folksy stuff.

Impressive work.
I did the same countdown from 2000 to 2016 (without comments, just ranking in the preference order) and spent 3 months. I think about the update with 2017 and 2018, but for the obvious reason will not post my list here. This post has been edited by Good Old Days: Sep 7 2018, 01:04 PM |

About my favourite Swedish entry of the century. Too often their standard pop is so polished and robotic that I begin to dislike it very quickly so something with a bit of a life to it, like The Worrying Kind, is much more addictive. One of my most listened ESC entries I'd say.
And for a ripoff that Firelight song is rather good. The rest, hard pass. Good to see this back. |

There are some songs I know I've heard again from re-watching contests yet don't remember from looking at the titles! Step forward Turkey 2000, Switzerland 2009 and Lithuania 2002 though I remember I wasn't keen on that one.
I found the Maltese entry 2017 really quite dull, though there was certainly worse that year. DQ seemed incredibly cliched and when compared with Conchita was nothing, however there were some odd qualifiers over non qualifiers in 2007 which was such a weak year. I think that era suffered from having too many auto-qualifiers. Ukraine 2003 still makes me laugh, so cliched, and dated, but I quite enjoyed it at the time IIRC The best from this set for me is Andorra 2009. They deserved the final with the majority of their entries, including this one. I guess you don't agree though |

I guess you don't agree though Hahaha well they still have a 33% chance of qualifying with at least one song in a hypothetical final for me I don't think any of their songs really pissed me off though, they're just for the most part generic and forgettable hahah. Out of the two remaining Andorran entries ("Casanova" and "La Mirada Interior") which one do you hope does better then? |

Of those two, I can't remember "Casanova" at all despite re-watching the 2008 contest last year, and I never saw the 2004 and 2005 semi finals so haven't actually heard the latter yet (the next contest for me to re-watch is 2003!) The three I think deserved to make the final are "Get A Life", "Salvem El Món" and "Sense Tu"! |

Not fussed on the Macedonian or Norwegian offerings in this segment...
I think you totally nailed it re: Levina, and is it really ANY surprise you forgot about Manel? Just how BAD was "Do It For Your Lover"? I really like "Pokusaj" for pretty much all of the reasons you state! I actually thought it reminded me more of Coldplay "Clocks" at the time, but with the whackiness thrown in. LOVE that bizarre performance. So yeah, pretty cool this one for me, one of my favourite Bosnian entries, and very memorable. That Demy song is pretty bland and uninspired really, so to see it finish just 3 above Levina says a lot I think. I don't disagree. I don't dislike either song but they hardly stand out do they? It frustrated me when they changed the lyrics of "This Is Love" because it seemed to make it even lamer. This post has been edited by Hans: Sep 16 2018, 10:20 AM |

BTW I totally forgot to address this but with the elimination of Haldor Lægreid we have reached the Top 10 for 2001 (first of any contest to do so) and our contenders for the crown in this year are:
TOP 10 2001 Croatia / Vanna - "Strings of My Heart" Denmark / Rollo & King - "Never Ever Let You Go" France / Natasha St-Pier - "Je N'ai Que Mon Âme" Germany / Michelle - "Wer Liebe Lebt" Greece / Antique - "Die For You" Ireland / Gary O'Shaughnessy - "Without Your Love" Malta / Fabrizio Faniello - "Another Summer Night" Slovenia / Nuša Derenda - "Energy" Spain / David Civera - "Dile Que La Quiero" Sweden / Friends - "Listen To Your Heartbeat" 11. Norway / Haldor Lægreid - "On My Own" (507th) 12. Netherlands / Michelle - "Out On My Own" (523rd) 13. Israel / Tal Sondak - "En Davar" (551st) 14. Estonia / Tanel Padar, Dave Benton & 2XL - "Everybody" (558th) 15. Lithuania / SKAMP - "You Got Style" (562nd) 16. Poland / Andrzej Piaseczny - "2 Long" (571st) 17. Iceland / Two Tricky - "Angel" (596th) 18. Bosnia & Herzegovina / Nino Pršeš - "Hano" (612th) 19. Turkey / Sedat Yüce - "Sevgiliye Son" (640th) 20. United Kingdom / Lindsey Dracass - "No Dream Impossible" (686th) 21. Portugal / MTM - "Só Sei Ser Feliz Assim" (695th) 22. Latvia / Arnis Mednis - "Too Much" (703rd) 23. Russia / Mumiy Troll - "Lady Alpine Blue" (714th) As you can see this is fairly accurate compared to what actually happened since nine out of these ten songs actually made the Top 10, but surprisingly the only song missing is the IRL Winner Estonia. Instead we get Ireland's Gary O'Shaughnessy (Yep, Ryan's uncle) who actually placed third-to-last in the real thing. Who are you rooting for to go furthest out of these songs and which ones are you surprised to see still in the running? The next contest to do so will probably be either 2000 (with 13 songs left) or 2002 (with 12 songs left), but who knows? This post has been edited by cantthinkofaname: Sep 18 2018, 09:25 AM |

There was a time when the only song I liked from 2001 was the Slovenian entry. The songs from Denmark, Greece, Sweden and France have since grown on me. I think 2000 remains my least favourite year represented in this countdown- don't think I revisit any of the songs from it.

La teva decisio is a bit of a bop, more than you'd expect from Andorra and I wish it had got to the final.
Wild Soul sticks out from the last couple of bunches too, not an absolute fave but it certainly didn't deserve to do quite as badly as it did in its semi :/ |

For those who are curious here are some stats for the eliminated songs so far and the ones remaining.
Year | Out/Total | Percentage of Eliminees 01 · 2016 · 5/42 · 11.9% 02 · 2015 · 6/40 · 15.0% 03 · 2018 · 8/43 · 18.6% 04 · 2014 · 7/37 · 18.9% 05 · 2012 · 10/42 · 23.8% 06 · 2006 · 9/37 · 24.3% 07 · 2011 · 11/43 · 25.6% 08 · 2013 · 11/39 · 28.2% 09 · 2010 · 11/39 · 28.2% 10 · 2017 · 13/42 · 31.0% 11 · 2003 · 9/26 · 34.6% 12 · 1999 · 8/23 · 34.8% 13 · 2009 · 15/42 · 35.7% 14 · 2004 · 14/36 · 38.9% 15 · 2008 · 18/43 · 39.5% 16 · 2005 · 16/39 · 41.0% 17 · 2007 · 19/42 · 45.2% 18 · 2000 · 11/24 · 45.8% 19 · 2002 · 12/24 · 50.0% 20 · 2001 · 13/23 · 56.5% So far the year with the most losses percentage wise is 2001 (56.5%), it also has the least songs remaining (10) but the year with the most losses in total is 2007 (19 losses) followed quickly by 2008 (18 losses). On the other end of the spectrum we have 2016 with both the least losses percentage wise (11.9%) and number of cuts so far (5 losses). If we go by percentage, the Top 5 is shaped up by mostly recent years (2012 - 5th, 2014 - 4th, 2018 - 3rd, 2015 - 2nd, 2016 - 1st) but surprisingly 2006 manages to sneak in at number 6 while 2017 is all the way back at number 10 as the lowest placing year of the 2010s. Countries | Out/Total | Percentage of Eliminees 01 · Serbia · 0/12 · 0.0% 02 · Denmark · 1/19 · 5.3% 03 · Azerbaijan · 1/11 · 9.1% 04 · France · 2/20 · 10.0% 05 · Sweden · 2/20 · 10.0% 06 · Norway · 2/19 · 10.5% 07 · Greece · 2/18 · 11.1% 08 · Italy · 1/8 · 12.5% 09 · Moldova · 2/15 · 13.3% 10 · Ukraine · 2/15 · 13.3% 11 · Belarus · 3/16 · 18.8% 12 · Estonia · 4/20 · 20.0% 13 · Iceland · 4/19 · 21.1% 14 · Macedonia · 4/17 · 23.5% 15 · Armenia · 3/12 · 25.0% 16 · Australia · 1/4 · 25.0% 17 · Bulgaria · 3/12 · 25.0% 18 · Germany · 5/20 · 25.0% 19 · Malta · 5/20 · 25.0% 20 · Netherlands · 5/19 · 26.3% 21 · Albania · 4/15 · 26.7% 22 · Russia · 5/18 · 27.8% 23 · Finland · 5/17 · 29.4% 24 · Romania · 5/17 · 29.4% 25 · Switzerland · 5/17 · 29.4% 26 · Croatia · 6/18 · 33.3% 27 · San Marino · 3/9 · 33.3% 28 · Spain · 7/20 · 35.0% 29 · United Kingdom · 7/20 · 35.0% 30 · Turkey · 5/14 · 35.7% 31 · Georgia · 4/11 · 36.4% 32 · Israel · 8/20 · 40.0% 33 · Hungary · 5/12 · 41.7% 34 · Slovenia · 8/19 · 42.1% 35 · Bosnia & Herzegovina · 6/14 · 42.9% 36 · Poland · 7/16 · 43.8% 37 · Cyprus · 8/18 · 44.4% 38 · Austria · 7/15 · 46.7% 39 · Belgium · 9/19 · 47.4% 40 · Ireland · 9/19 · 47.4% 41 · Latvia · 9/19 · 47.4% 42 · Czech Republic · 4/7 · 57.1% 43 · Lithuania · 11/18 · 61.1% 44 · Portugal · 10/16 · 62.5% 45 · Montenegro · 7/11 · 63.6% 46 · Andorra · 4/6 · 66.7% 47 · Slovakia · 3/4 · 75.0% 48 · Monaco · 3/3 · 100.0% Moving into the Country department the list has the two extremes at each pole: Monaco in last having lost all of their entries and Serbia in first as it's the only country to not have lost a single entry. Other than that our bottom five is made up of the usual suspects: Slovakia and Andorra who are severely hurt by having only participated a handful of times. The biggest offenders here are without a doubt the next three who have all suffered big losses: Montenegro has lost 7 out of its 11 entries. Portugal has lost 10 out of 16 songs and with the highest count of casualties Lithuania is only fifth last but with 11 out of 18 songs eliminated already. In the upper-half we're very Nordic friendly but surprisingly there's only two nordic entries in the Top 5: Denmark (No. 2) and Sweden (No. 5). I think my biggest surprise in the Top 50 (excluding the fact that SERBIA out of all countries is the one with a perfect record lmao) is France having only lost two of its' 20 entries. I was so surprised to learn I liked so many of their entries when compiling this list but they have been consistently at least alright for the most part of the century. Some surprising countries to fail to place in the Top 5 are my homecountry Iceland at No. 13 and Russia at No. 22, both of whom I have usually considered to send quality entries but with some of the deadweight out this early we might be seeing them climb in the coming updates. Placement | Out/Total | Percentage of Eliminees 1 · 3rd Place · 0/20 · 0.0% 2 · Runner-Up · 1/20 · 5.0% 3 · Winner · 2/20 · 10.0% 4 · 4th Place · 2/20 · 10.0% 5 · 26th Place · 1/9 · 11.1% 6 · Top 10s · 29/200 · 14.5% 7 · 6th Place · 3/20 · 15.0% 8 · 12th Place · 3/20 · 15.0% 9 · 14th Place · 3/20 · 15.0% 10 · 5th Place · 4/20 · 20.0% 11 · 7th Place · 4/20 · 20.0% 12 · 8th Place · 4/20 · 20.0% 13 · 9th Place · 4/20 · 20.0% 14 · 15th Place · 4/20 · 20.0% 15 · 10th Place · 5/20 · 25.0% 16 · 11th Place · 5/20 · 25.0% 17 · 13th Place · 5/20 · 25.0% 18 · 16th Place · 5/20 · 25.0% 19 · 24th Place · 5/18 · 27.8% 20 · 17th Place · 6/20 · 30.0% 21 · 22nd Place · 6/20 · 30.0% 22 · 19th Place · 7/20 · 35.0% 23 · 20th Place · 8/20 · 40.0% 24 · 18th Place · 9/20 · 45.0% 25 · DNQ · 104/227 · 45.8% 26 · 21st Place · 10/20 · 50.0% 27 · 23rd Place · 10/20 · 50.0% 28 · 25th Place · 6/12 · 50.0% Now for the final tidbit we look at the placements. The first thing that pops out to me is the fact that despite having lost 104 entries so far, the Non-Qualifiers are indeed NOT in last place. 21st and 23rd place seem to have had far less luck in this coutndown as they have lost ten entries each which accumulates to half of every song that's placed in those positions. Also in joint last is 25th place though but since this position has only been featured mariginally less it doesn't give as big of an impact as the other two. Onto the top half. In first place we have third placers who have yet to lose a single song, beating out both the winners and runners-up, even if only slightly. Fourth placers take up their own spot in joint-fourth place but the biggest surprise has to be 26th placers which have only lost one of their 9 entries ("JUST Do It For Your Lovaaaaaah"). Other non-top tenners to place in the top 10 are twelfth placers and fourteenth placers who have great track records still. While IRL Top 10 placers generally have done well here (combined placing 6th), Tenth placers currently hold the record for worst results out of actual top ten placers as they are in a four-way tie for fifteenth place. |
