As the series builds towards an epic conclusion, discuss all your theories about how you think the show may/will end!

This thread may contain spoilers due to discussion of potential future plots but nothing is certain in this show.

This hopefully allows for the individual episode discussion threads to be black spoiler tag free...

I quite like the theory that The Night King is not actually at Winterfell and is instead making his way to King's Landing. Seems strange they wouldn't show him at the end seeing as he's the one figure we all know about.

Yeh, I’ve seen that too! It would make sense as Cersei can’t avoid the White Walkers completely and who better to face than the Night King (and possibly his dragon!)

I'll be preparing my full theories but it would be so iconic for the Night King to skip Winterfell entirely and head straight to Kings Landing!!!

That's similar what I was thinking yesterday of them coming face to face with a white walker Cersei! It would be a wonderful twist and it would kinda make sense, given Cersei didn't feature at all yesterday and you'd think the Night King would be leading his army, but we didn't get a shot of him.

It wouldn't make sense though with Bran saying they are coming for him. That's the only thing that makes me doubt it. One of those dragons is definitely making its way to Kings Landing at some point. Pretty much everything else in Bran's vision back in the day has happened I think

I'm really interested to see what Melisandre will do.

I've also recently learned that in the books Catelyn Stark gets revived and becomes Lady Stoneheart. It would be quite amazing if she made an appearance in the final season to protect her children.

She's definitely not coming back. Most people seem to think her story is mixed with Beric's in the show seeing as he's long dead in the books.

I think Bran is right but also wrong. The Night King does want to kill him but he's not stupid enough to throw away his advantage. He has one dragon and a large army. Viserion won't stand a chance against 2 dragons and his army will be slaughtered by them. Rule number one of warfare - fight the enemy where he is not. If the NK sends a portion of his army and his generals to Winterfell as a distraction he can assault Kings Landing virtually unopposed. The Lannister army and the golden company have no known counter to the dragons bar a single scorpion. The show has explicitly shown there is minimal defence against a dragon. A surprise attack on a population of around a million people would seriously bolster his forces and outflank Winterfell in one move.
In this scenario Cersei escapes with Euron by sea to be dealt with later.

I would go with or discount this theory either way if I could just work out who is riding that dragon in the preview trailer.

The show runners, GRRM and Michelle Fairley have explicitly stated it's not happening. It would be one hell of a shock if they threw that in but also incredibly jarring with no build up in the show. An audience with no knowledge of Stoneheart would find it ridiculous to have her suddenly appear given no foreshadowing.

Someone raised an interesting point. Jon was freed from the Nights Watch by dying. Does this also mean his claim to the throne also disappears and had passed to the next in line (i.e. Dany)?!

Anyway, I'm here for Lady Stoneheart FINALLY appearing. It would be iconic and unexpected given the amount of times it's been denied and the fact we're so far on from when she appeared in the books.

I have read that if the Knight King does attack Winterfell, the dead in the crypts may rise and not make them as safe as they think they are....

Jon's mother could be after him!

More than that when he joined the Night's Watch he pledged an oath that renounced all claims to lands and titles.

Admittedly as a bast*rd he had no claim to those anyway but no-one knew his real lineage then.

Any maester trying to ascertain who has the legal claim to the throne would have a nightmare trying to work it all out but the truth is the best claim resides with those who want it and have the power to enforce it.

Major potential spoiler here, so read at your peril. I was unsure of it, but it was stated some characters we thought would perish in Winterfell (Brienne and Gendry for example) are in this scene which was called way before the episode aired.

Anyway unsure how this fits in to the main plot but it's read at your peril... Tyrion ends up on trial for treason (again) in episode 6 and ends up being executed.

My latest thoughts - Jorah dying sends Dany loopy. Thus she turns in to her Dad.

I always dismissed Bran being the Night King as unlikely as there were bits I couldn't reconcile. I'm warming to it. Here's why

Bran gives Arya Catspaw but there's no obvious indication he knows how she'll use it. We know he sees the past but the future visions are less clear cut

For -

NK comes for Bran but doesn't move to kill him without pause.

Why? If NK is Bran, has he come to kill his younger self and prevent his existence - years of torment and isolation as NK?

NK makes no aggressive moves to wards Jon Snow at any point ever, even when the opportunity is easy. The wights appear to only have a 'kill everything/kill nothing' setting.

NK only kills Theon as Theon threatens him. Not before

Against -
We saw the NK being created many years ago so it can't be Bran - He can see into the past and warg into people there (Hodor)
Did he do that as NK was created? Why? Did he get stuck there?

This is my biggest issue with the theory

In the episode The Children, Bran meets the Three-eyed Raven. If Bran is NK then NK knows where Bran is headed and when. He may have left wights to ambush him, but only a few? Why not all of them?

Conclusion

Maybe NK only retains basic memories of his past life and no details. Subsequently the man he was and Bran are not clear in his mind until Bran is marked by touch and all he remembers is he must kill Bran to prevent centuries of suffering but doesn't understand why.

Just a thought..

At the end of last season if the dead were to march to KL, Cersei said she’d kill them with left over wildfire. If Daenerys does flame the red Keep could this trigger a massive explosion decimating everyone??

Definitely believing this is the course of action at this point tbh: Drogon burns the Red Keep but the fire is so strong that it passes through walls etc and travels down to below Kings Landing igniting the remaining wildfire. Kings Landing is engulfed with flames and Dany looks on in horror as she’s inadvertently finished the job her father started 20 years prior. Jon wouldn’t have it in him to kill Dany but Jaime would for sure, he’s only recently swayed his loyalty and even then where he stands with Cersei could be anywhere right now. He hates her but he loves her I’m sure plus she’s carrying his baby. Jaime becomes Queenslayer and is then killed or imprisoned or something by idk Jon. Possibly even Arya gets to Cersei before the fire meaning Dany’s attack wasn’t needed though Arya gets lost in the flames along with The Hound (who’s just killed or almost killed his brother but is now being burned alive in front of him, ouch) and a couple of others.

The vision of the throne room burned down showed complete wreckage, I know Drogon is the strongest of the dragons but I don’t think he’s big enough (yet) to destroy entire stone buildings that have already lasted hundreds of years. That said though he did just lose both his brothers plus Dany’s anger will pass on to him too. Between them they could destroy all of Westeros is they decided to.

I feel at this point it's very obvious Dany will be pushed to torching King's Landing (or trying), will kill Cersei, but Jon will then kill Dany for the good of the Kingdom.
