Chris Evans did a Madonna hour on his Breakfast Show on Radio 2 this morning to "bring some sunshine into our lives": http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08cpz59
The songs played were: Borderline Into the Groove Like a Prayer Lucky Star Material Girl Papa Don't Preach Vogue Who's That Girl? I always overlook 'Who's That Girl?' but it doesn't look out of place at all next to those Madonna classics. Such a great, feel-good selection! |

Chris has good Madonna taste! Radio 2 seem to play a lot of Madonna but Radio 1 is generally my radio station of choice. I might try out some of the Radio 2 programmes; I know Jo Wiley has a slot on there and I like her, plus she seems to be a Madonna fan too!

I think it's quite easy to forget, because she's had so many huge hits over such a large timespan, that her early stuff is still pretty classic too. Even though I rank the album perhaps as low as second from bottom (only because her succeeding albums were more complex in sound, lyrics and concept and what not, which is what I know and love and want from Madonna), there is something very special about her debut album. It's all quite raw and doesn't have anything to live up to; there was room to play about with different melodies and technologies.

Advertisement and outtakes for a Max Factor advert in 1999. I love it!  She's so goofy and funny and just reminds me of what she was like in the early 90s. I love "so if my acting isn't flawless, at least my skin will be", "you said it", "indeed I did, which is a good thing because, if you had said it, you'd be fired".

Still love it now. It shows Madonna is still quite capable and creating poignant, stylish, storytelling videos (in fact, her tour backdrops show that too - see the 'Iconic' intro backdrop for the Rebel Heart Tour). |

Slant Magazine have revealed Erotica is their #2 album of 1992, following R.E.M's Automatic for the People.
QUOTE No Madonna album was ever met with a louder backlash or was more rampantly misrepresented than this dark masterpiece, so you know it was doing something right. Released on the tail end of AIDS hysteria, Erotica is far from the opus to guiltless sexual fulfillment it—and its even more ridiculed accompanying tome Sex—was made out to be. Though there's no doubt it espouses taking joy in physical pleasure (“Let me remind you in case you don't already know/Dining out can happen down below”), no album seems more empathetically haunted by the act's countless side effects (i.e. “Bad Girl,” “Thief of Hearts,” a purposefully monotonous house cover of Peggy Lee's “Fever”). Underneath Madonna's bondage getup and Shep Pettibone's oversized drum tracks beats a truly pained heart. Henderson I'm Breathless was also their #5 for albums of 1990: QUOTE Yes, it technically has “Vogue” on it. And even though we get a kick out of imagining what Elliot Ness would've made of the four-on-the-floor rinse and those performance-enhanced piano chords (we're reasonably certain his limbs would've put out an all points bulletin), that epochal pop-house smash is effectively a bonus track on what was, at the time, maybe the ballsiest move Madonna made at that point. Who else but the queen of pop could fold under her wing both Stephen Sondheim and Shep Pettibone? And though Evita gets all the ink, this caffeinated big-band stomp of an album is where she truly started pushing outside her vocal comfort zone. Not that she had much choice. Loopy from front to back, I'm Breathless is a Disney-approved retro boilermaker, where the lovelorn sincerity of the Oscar-winning “Sooner or Later” and the eager-to-please showmanship of “More” somehow nestle perfectly alongside the naughty S&M electro-swing of “Hanky Panky.” This album will get its due—it's just a question of when. Henderson Hoping Ray of Light tops their albums of 1998 list! |
