Clarkson has come out as Pro-EU. I almost died of shock at that and then my heart actually broke at the news about Jo Cox. As a mark of respect both sides have agreed to suspend campaigning.

Terrible tragedy. Reports are unconfirmed, but apparently it's linked to Britain First.

The EU Referendum doesn't matter now that an innocent MP who had a bright future ahead of her has died in the most shocking way. Absolutely shocking to hear. Completely shocked.

Terrible news. Oxfam campaigner murdered by a disturbed or evil man. These people never go for the spreaders of hate because they ARE spreaders of hate.

I hope those guilty of whopping lies and hyperbole on both sides feel ashamed of themselves. This whole campaign has been an outrageous mess and makes british politics look disgusting. I am of course assuming it is related, and not just a personal gudge. Either way they should all take it as a warning that ramping up fervour risks deadly consequences and will now be in very bad taste.

In her short time at Westminster, she had clearly had a big impact on MPs from all parties. Some newly elected MPs take their time to make friends with political opponents, but she seems to have done so from the very start. Here is a moving tribute from former Tory minister Andrew Mitchell.

The words of her husband are very powerful

QUOTE
Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love.

I and Jo's friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.

Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it everyday of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.

She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her.

I'm feeling so awful about this. More tragedy. Nobody ever deserves this, but cliche as it sounds, it doesn't sound like there was a nicer person for it to have happened to. I keep thinking about the moments when she was attacked from the descriptions, and it's making me so uneasy. Those poor kids and the poor husband. So unfair.

Absolutely shocking. It's only right the campaign should be suspended as a mark of respect.

The attack is horrifyingly similar to on that happened in Cheltenham 15 years ago.

This is horrifying, to think that something like this can happen in our country, right under our noses, when a wonderful woman who's done so much for so many people was just doing her job sad.gif Another death bred out of hate and anger.

I'm still on holiday and have only just heard that this has happened. I'm absolutely horrified that such a killing could happen in the UK in this day and age, this feels like such a huge step backwards for our society and it's attitude towards 'Britishness'. How can anyone, mentally ill or not, justify killing a UK MP as a method of protecting our country - I can't remember the last time I was so utterly appalled at the mentality of some people in our country, it makes me so unbelievably sad and angry that this has happened.

The horrendous campaign focus on scaremongering has a lot to answer for here and the press and campaign managers should be ashamed of themselves for targeting people's fears as a campaign rather than presenting clear and informed facts.

RIP Jo Cox. I sincerely hope that your passing triggers our country to take a long hard look at itself and strive to regain the values and principles that always made being British something to be proud of.

Without wishing to sound completely OTT, the next time I'm asked where I'm from I will feel a bit ashamed to say that I'm British, something I've never felt before - the image we're giving to the rest of the Europe (and indeed the world) is not a positive one.
