In the post-COVID-19 reality that we call 2020 we have suddenly and unexpectedly got a Eurovision shaped hole in our lives.
Nothing can fill that void that but we can look back at Europe's faves from the 2010s.

This is the Top 40 Grand Final highest scoring songs in Grand Finals from the decade that has just finished.

To give every song a fair chance I have normalised the scores – that is, I have applied some simple mathematics to level the playing field.

First off, every song from 2016 onward has had their Grand Final score cut in half – to counteract the doubling of the points available since the jury votes and televote had been split that year.

Then I divided everyone's score by the number of countries voting minus 1 – this had to be done because some years had more countries voting than others. We then have the average mark received by each entry from each voting country. Then I multiplied by 40 to give us scores we are used to seeing.

There are some surprises along the way. We lose some winners mid-table and some songs that came 4th and 5th do surprisingly well.

Predictions are, as always, welcome.

I suspect and dread the eventual win of Portugal 2017 ugh.

Will be following this anyway. Are songs getting any scores from the semis too?

Finished 6th in 2019.
Won the televote in the Grand Final and in Semi-Final 2

Ah, the jury-ignored Spirit in the Sky. Providing one of the greatest Eurovision moments of the decade, when the televote revealed that we, the people, bloody well loved the song and we loved it more than any of the rest of them. The triple-vocaled song wowed the viewing population in Tel Aviv last year, giving Norway their best finishing position since Margaret Berger achieved 4th place in 2013.

This has easily become one of my favorites from last year. Did not expect it to age so well!

Finished 5th in 2019.
Came 3rd in semi final 2.
Won Melodifestivalen 2019 by a 69% margin ohmy.gif

Unlike Spirit in the Sky, the juries loved Too Late For Love elevating it to 2nd place in the jury voting in 2019 but it wasn't to be, as the public were less enamoured. Obviously, it's quality product - the utter joy of the Mamas made sure of that.

It extended their all time top 5 placings to 25 and the 7th of the decade.

Also finished 5th, this time in 2017.
Came 3rd in semi-final 1.

In what was starting to become a trend, the public put this in 8th position but juries had it in 3rd.

I have to say, it's a totally soulless song - thank God that John and the Mamas weren't far behind.

Came 3rd in 2010 but, bizarrely, 4th in semi-final 2.

In the voting this was never seen as a contender but snuck up to 3rd place 3 countries from the end.
A rip-roaring chorus with a pounding piano throughout. Paula's vocals were effortlessly great.

They tried again in 2014 but missed the top 10.

Came 3rd in 2011 and topped semi-final 2.

Has there ever been a more smug song to have been entered? And he stole the drums from Boney M's Rasputin. The synths are not terrible.

Overall, dismal.

That's the last we've seen of Sweden for a while.

Came 4th in 2017 and 4th in semi-final 1.

Despite not being a very Eurovision type song and a vocal that wasn't amazing Blanche scored very well. Jury voted her 9th but televote put her 4th.

City lights was very catchy despite an average vocal in the final.

Agree on the Swedish songs so far; "Too Late For Love" was certainly my favourite since "Undo" ("Heroes" was a tad too formulaic for me to love it).

Also "City Lights" is possibly top 5 on record of the decade for me, but the performance felt so lacklustre. Still pleased it scored well but just think of how it could've fared with a killer performance?

For the winners that leave mid-table I'm guessing "Satellite" and "Running Scared" for sure. Maybe "Rise Like A Phoenix" too?

Came 2nd in 2011 and topped semi-final 2.

Rock is a prickly beast in Eurovision - countries to the East tend to do it better. This is the sort of thing Kerrang! TV would have played to death in 2004. The strings are excellent.

Came 2nd in 2011.

Having taken a 14 year break, Italy had obviously bid their time until the right moment to come back with a great song. Solid piano playing too.

Came 4th in 2019 and 4th in semi-final 2.

A sped up Despacito with extra hooks and a cracking dancer saw Switzerland back in the top 5 for the first time in forever when even qualifying for the final was something to celebrate.

Came 3rd in 2017 and 2nd in semi-final 1.

As is common with upbeat songs, now, the jury were a lot less supportive than the televote. A 3rd place in the popular vote countered an 8th place with the jury to give them to their best ever result.

Came 5th in 2013 and 2nd in semi-final 1.

Russia excelled in the last decade with many top 5 placings. Dina's ballad was good enough but in the grand scheme nothing too notable.

Came 3rd in 2019 which was an improvement on the semi-final 2 result of 6th place.
A much darker and more dramatic song than Sergey's previous entry. The jury didn't go for it quite so much as the public placing it at a lowly 9th while the public vote sent it to the top 3.

Excellent staging.

Came 6th in 2015 and 2nd in semi-final 1.

This is the highest placed 6th place finalist of the decade from a very competitive year. Still, it was Latvia's best result since 2005.
