20. Yellow Submarine (1966) / Revolver + Yellow Submarine soundtrack 5/20 votes 'Yellow Submarine' finishes in 20th place after a closely fought battle. The song was released as a double A-side with 'Eleanor Rigby' in 1966 and topped the UK chart for 4 weeks. It stalled at #2 in the US and this was blamed on a couple of factors that coincided at the same time - the infamous 'butcher' cover for U.S. album 'Yesterday and Today', plus John Lennon's remarks about Christianity. 'Yellow Submarine' got a new lease of life when an animated film of the same name was released two years later. It appeared on the accompanying soundtrack twice - in its original form and an orchestral version named 'Yellow Submarine in Pepperland'. Lennon and McCartney wrote this song with Ringo in mind as the vocalist, which of course did materialise. They state that it's nothing more than a children's song. Many sound effects were incorporated to provide a nautical atmosphere, these included: chains, a ship's bell, tap dancing mats, whistles, a tin bath filled with water, a cash register and much more! Lennon and McCartney also talked through tin cans to create the sound of the captain's orders. A spoken intro for Ringo was planned but was eventually scrapped. 20. Yellow Submarine | 5/20 votes 21. Eight Days A Week | 5/17 votes 22. From Me To You | 4/21 votes (original vote) / 10/16 votes (tie-break round) 23. Get Back | 5/17 votes 24. The Long And Winding Road | 4/20 votes 25. She Loves You | 6/21 votes 26. Lady Madonna | 6/21 votes 27. The Ballad Of John And Yoko | 7/25 votes Please vote for your least favourite single from the 19 above! |

Aw I find 'Yellow Submarine' quite endearing, shame to see that go! I feel the same way about a couple of other Beatles songs with Ringo vocals, namely 'With A Little Help From My Friends' and 'Octopus's Garden'. So wholesome. My main criticism is that it feels so out of place on 'Revolver', I wish it had never been on that album (instead swapped with 'Rain' or 'Paperback Writer') and had just been left solely for the film. It works brilliantly for that!

Indeed, it was one of the first Beatles songs I discovered through the Yellow Submarine film, and while it definitely works visually much more than a song, I've always really loved it despite its silliness.

Rain should have been on Revolver absolutely instead of Yellow Submarine. One day soon I'm going to go to a
"What if Beatles albums were track-listed according to 21st century marketing principles" and see what should have been the actual albums. I promise perfection! Plus, "What if The Beatles hadn't split?" hypothetical albums (ignoring any input from Non-Beatles of course, and ignoring the fact that they mostly didn't work on each other's solo stuff)..... |
