Ed Sheeran should be #1 for a 12th week, but will it be 'Shape of You' or 'Galway Girl' that comes out on top? New entries to the Top 40 could include Zayn's 'Still Got Time' (production by PARTYNEXTDOOR), Chris Brown's 'Privacy' and David Guetta's 'Light Up My Body' (with vocals from Nicki Minaj & Lil Wayne), whilst Martin Solveig's 'Places' may finally climb into the Top 40 and Take That's 'Giants' may re-enter, following promo on Saturday Night Takeaway and their new album release...

Speaking of which, Take That will be hoping to achieve their eighth number one album with Wonderland, but Ed Sheeran could also remain at #1 for a fourth week. Joining Take That in the Top 10 should also be James Blunt's The Afterlove, whilst other new entries may include Creeper's Eternity, In Your Arms, Jesus & Mary Chain's Damage & Joy, Steel Panther's Lower The Bar and Trey Songz's Tremaine The Album.

Don't panic guys, Ed has overtaken Take That, he's safe.

Damn sad.gif I hoped they'd get another #1 album but they're hardly as big as they were a decade ago, and they're doing well to still be as popular as they are to be fair.

oh that was fast...
well, Minty posted yesterday that TT was way ahead, he also posted TT should do >100,000... also that Zara is down to #30 :/

Will Take That topple Sheeran's album this week? They're off to a healthy start. Big day today with panic Mother's Day purchases as well.

Ed is probably good Mother's Day fodder too though.

Zara's heading down to around 30😳

@mintroyale Does a 6 digit debut seem possible for them?
@popboi1 Yes

Posted by: liamk97 Mar 26 2017, 10:05 AM

They will no doubt have solid sales but I didn't ever expect them to shift 100k in their first week with this album, more in the 80k-90k sort of bracket.

I wouldn't even be surprised if Drake overtook.

EDIT: Posted before seeing the above post. Good on them if it seems likely they'll shift 100k+, even if Ed Sheeran does overtake, but I still wouldn't be shocked to see them under the mark.

Posted by: gooddelta Mar 26 2017, 10:08 AM

Yeah to be honest I was expecting 60k at best before seeing the opening day's 67k sale, which caught me off guard as I haven't seen much hype for this release!

Posted by: timjimlee Mar 26 2017, 10:42 AM

Clear run now for Divide to equal the initial eight consecutive weeks at the top that Multiply achieved.

Posted by: girl_from_oz Mar 26 2017, 12:25 PM

If Take That fail to knock Ed Sheeran off number one I'm not sure anyone will until at least late April when the new Gorillaz and Kasabian albums comes out

67k is a great start for Take That (although I'm sure they are very frontloaded) - thought they would do that in total for the week, fair play to them. I would say they will slow during the week prob just make 100k overall.

Album sales have been holding up well this year - albeit with some huge releases!

Here for Steps to come thundering in on the 21st to dethrone him tongue.gif

It won't happen, unless everyone else's album sales are down to around 15k by then, but it would be so amazing.

Posted by: gooddelta Mar 26 2017, 12:44 PM

I think Steps could do up to 40k...!

I would imagine that won't be quite enough to topple Ed as his streaming sales alone will be adding at least 20k to his weekly tally for a while yet.

Posted by: ___∆___ Mar 26 2017, 01:01 PM

Really hope Take That can do it but they would have been more frontliaded than usual due to the Amazon/tour ticket deal. Not sure if they would get a huge Mothers Day boost due to it being released so close to MD?

Don't get your hopes up for Take That - Ed's eaten up a ~37k lead within a single day. But yes, Mothers' Day has almost certainly boosted their sales (and Ed's)!

Yes, that was my thought as well, Kasabian releasing in Ed's ninth week of Release should get enough Sales to secure top spot although there could be a Harry Styles release before I guess.

Posted by: Brett-Butler Mar 26 2017, 01:28 PM

What did Take That's previous album shift in its first week? I think it was six figures, albeit way down on Progress' total, but cannot remember for sure.

145,000 off the back of a #1 single so would be impressed if this one manages 6 figures seeing as 'Giants' flopped

TT did well to even be ahead of Ed for one day really! Impressive enough sales from them.

Posted by: SevenSeize Mar 26 2017, 03:51 PM

Hard to believe a new Take That album won't hit #1, but i guess with Ed Sheeran around there's only so far you can go laugh.gif They'll easily do 100k+ anyway which is about what i'd expect from their name + mother's day boost

Giants didn't flop laugh.gif In a streaming climate for a band that has a majority of older fans that have probably never streamed before a top 15 hit is commendable ─ and it's become a well known track.

Yeah I think in this day and age a songs peak positions is by the by. It is what impact the song has and how far it reaches that determines its success. Take Robbie's Love my life, it peaked at 22 but I'd say it was a hit for him. It is pretty well known, did well on paid for sales and had some longevity. I think it will easily become a tour staple for him and be a well known hit for him.

Posted by: danG Mar 26 2017, 04:12 PM

Has Giants really become a 'well known' track though? Unlike the Robbie single it had no longevity in the top half of the sales chart and only charted so high from fan base buys.

When name a Take That single becomes a question in Pointless in a few years I imagine Giants will have a very low score.

Posted by: slowdown73 Mar 26 2017, 04:13 PM

I was surprised TT managed 67k in first day but there will be a lot of preorders and most of their fan base will probably buy the CD. Streaming will cost them unfortunately but I hope they can break 100k which would be a good achievement given Luke warm success of Giants.

Posted by: Bjork Mar 26 2017, 04:18 PM

Actually Giants did well only cos of the CD single
Nobody cared on itunes either
Was out of the top 10 faster than Steps
So cannot blame streams only

Posted by: Davidson Mar 26 2017, 04:30 PM

It is really great to see the album chart so healthy this year thus far.

Oh I don't know how Giants will play out in the long run, just the term flop cant just be thrown about these days for anything that doesn't make top 10 or after a week or 2 of release. Especially when half the chart can be made up of album tracks from huge albums causing low peaks now.

Yes I'm sure there will be Articles in the press when Q1 is over highlighting an increase in Album Sales in 2017 and declaring the Album format is back on the rise. The reality is just the Release schedule has been especially healthy so far this year.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Mar 26 2017, 05:12 PM

Take That look to open on good sales the question is whether its good enough to hold number 1 or not now. Get out signing boys and get the number1!

Btw I know TT have different formats in the Amazon Best Sellers but despite all the Promotion they have managed so far the highest selling Format ( the Deluxe edition) is behind Vera Lynn (and Rag 'N' Bone Man & Ed).

Agreed.

There are plenty of acts with much younger fan bases that stream a lot and they have singles that struggle to breakthrough for weeks and weeks.

Take That will need decent promo keep "Giants" hanging around but it's had a nice boost since the album was released anyway.

Eh... look at Rick Astley - he had one single chart within the top 200, yet his album is about to go Platinum.

I think people need to accept that the days that "older" acts having hit singles are mostly gone. It'll depend on how the album does in Take That's case to see if they've made any impact beyond their fanbase.

Mostly maybe but Sia is 41 and Train are all in their 40s, lead singer is 48 so there are certainly exceptions to the rule

It depends if Radio 1/Capital get behind them.

There are many examples of artists under 30 with young fanbases struggling to achieve high peaks in the chart too.

Giants didn't flop laugh.gif In a streaming climate for a band that has a majority of older fans that have probably never streamed before a top 15 hit is commendable ─ and it's become a well known track.

Taking away streaming it's sales chart run is 5-39-83-75-73...

Really stellar from Take That, double what I thought it would be on at this stage. It will be barely down from III, which was a Q4 release and had a #1 lead single.

It's not bad but in fairness they have gone all out with their Promotion this time (Red Nose Day, Carpool Karaoke, Let It Shine, Saturday Night Takeaway, Record Signings etc), given the numbers they used to shift I think 100k was a given.

The only promotion for the album/Giants, however, was Saturday Night Takeaway.
They didn't promote any new stuff on Let It Shine and the signings were for only 300 fans.

Also the Release was scheduled for Mother's Day week to maximize Sales at this time of year!

I guess they thought it would be a comfortable number 1 in Ed's fourth week of Release.

While I'm disappointed take that will miss number 1 I'm happy with the sales as they are gonna be very close to the opening sales of three which was a q4 release, the audience with show should give them healthy sales next week aswell.

Great top 10 sales in the albums even if it is Mothers Day week - no surprise that michael ball is back in the top 10 for the first time since January - always happens like that with a MOR xmas no1 album!

I suggest you give up on that hope now - Ed Sheeran will be number 1 for at least 8 weeks.

Posted by: Feel_The_Fever Mar 27 2017, 08:59 PM

The audience is still there which is great, if only the lead single did better this time, sales would be even better.

Just seen Giants is number 67, i hope it can stay top 75, but it should at the least be top 100.

Posted by: stevyy Mar 27 2017, 09:19 PM

Well, it would have been amazing for TT to debut at #1... however, debut sales of approaching 120k is pretty outstanding if you ask me. I mean they've been around for 25 years and such sales are really rare. With the debut of Wonderland, TT have also cleared 15m albums sold in the UK.

Let's just hope that the album doesn't drop below 30k in week 2... I want the album to go platinum and it would be awesome if in the coming 12 weeks or so III could finally go 2xP.

TT remain monster sellers in the UK. I'm more concerned about international placings and sales.

May be a slight exaggeration there - realistically no.1 Album until May (Kasabian releasing on 28th April) and no.1 Single until April (Harry Styles releasing something on 7th April).

That album won't challenge him and Harry Styles won't generate the same level of interest as ZAYN. He was Geri Halliwelled. Everyone knows the first to go solo is ALWAYS the biggest.

Zara's album up to #12 on midweek and 400 copies behind #10, looking likely two weeks top 10! Imagine had she promoted the album with anything other than 'So Good'! I'm just glad the UK are here for her! wub.gif

It's quite a bizarre story as she was supposedly playing the song before Christmas, before the track was released! I assume she was playing some other song at the time.

Noisy neighbours are a nightmare. Back in 2002 my then next door neighbour used to play Scooter on loud volume almost every night when she rolled in drunk from the pub. Almost every night you could guarantee she would play 'The Logical Song' at a loud volume. To this day I still get nervous sweats every time I hear that song!

41,843 - substantial drop off this time clearly despite the Ed Sheeran association.

Posted by: gooddelta Mar 29 2017, 09:08 PM

I'm amazed Blunt can still command opening sales of over 20k personally!

Musically he's been regarded to most as a bit of a joke ever since his over-exposure in 2005, so to still be doing rather well 12 years later is pretty impressive!

I actually liked Moon Landing but listened to this new album at the weekend and it's pretty dire, a mix of bad tropical house and self-depreciating ballads about songs he wrote in 2005 (there are two of these!) laugh.gif

Posted by: timjimlee Mar 29 2017, 09:24 PM

Yes recently there has been a bit of a self-deprecating theme he has been keen to bring up at ever opportunity - it was funny initially with the tweets in response to those throwing insults at him. The National Lottery ad was amusing but probably did him no favours as a credible Artist but the Advert for the Album was probably a step too far on that theme.

Id expect a big sales drop for Take That as i think they have already outsold what many would have predicted. They seem to have strong promo lined up for next week so hopefully that transfers to sales. If they released the album next week and had the same sales as this week it could have been another number for them. With so many week having low sales number 1 its a shame they will miss the number 1 having big sales. Luckily i like ED Sheeran too as if it was someone i didnt like i would be even more disappointed.

I'd consider that very little promotion on the lead up to release...

There was no performance or mention of a new album on Comic Relief, so that would have done nothing. And a track being played on the background of a TV slot is hard groundbreaking.

SN Take Away was really the only promo.

Carpool Karaoke is huge though, it has a big impact on iTunes UK normally and that's simply over the YouTube videos going viral. This is the first time it's been shown on prime time TV and Giants was one of the songs they sang, that's excellent promo. Otherwise, Comic Relief isn't really the time to say "hi guys we've got a new album go buy it". The ITV advert wasn't a massive thing really, it got shown for a week only, but it did give Giants a couple of boosts on iTunes.

Basically they got some pretty great promo, perhaps they could've done with a Graham Norton slot or a Voice performance as well but this is pretty decent still, and Saturday Night Takeaway is just about the best promo you can get right now.

EDIT: I hear they're on Graham next Friday, even better biggrin.gif

While i am disappointed with the new Take That album as i feel its not as good as previous albums, it does show they are not afraid to experiment, they continue to deliver albums that differ, they have such a strong catalogue of albums and to be opening on sales that they have in this day and age and 25 years into their career is a testament to them.

I do feel the album could have had better promotion but at least they did some promotion unlike they did with the lead single Giants. I do like that they try different styles but i yearn for them to make music in line with that of the Beautiful World and Circus eras of their career or even in the sound of the Flood,Love Love or Eight Letters from Progress.

I'm not sure unfaithful is the word you're looking for. Jessie J isn't the first artist to have a good first era but struggle to follow it up. Examples of this are Duffy, James Blunt and Emeli Sande.

If she puts out a single that catches on like Price Tag did, then she's got a shot with a new album.

From those listed i would say James Blunt to a lesser extent, his follow up sold over 800,000 and he went on to achieve further platinum selling albums. I know it was a big drop from the 3 million sales of his debut, but the other artists listed especially Duffy had an awful second era. Jessie J i believe partly suffered as people did not like her personality, this was mixed with music that was not as popular as that from her first era.

A Take That Album ("Progress") sold as many as 2.4 million as recently as 2010/2011, they had a huge 'fanbase', let's not pretend a lot of their sales this week are from casual buyers.
If that is the case then more of their 'fanbase' has deserted them with "III" and "Wonderland" than we first thought.

Jessie J never having a no.1 album is a blessing.

Poor old Duffy tho. Artists would kill for Endlessly's sales these days. Still love that album.

This really is the era of the banal - where's the trailblazers, the renegades? (Thankgod for Stormzy). Please give me anything other than MOR and formulaic R&B.

With the crazyworld we live in right you'd think musicians would be getting a lot more political, instead of Ed Sheeran's MOR stuff

Posted by: danG Mar 30 2017, 05:40 PM

There are musicians who are political , they just happen to not be mainstream artists

Seeing as politics is a very divisive subject and controversial it comes as no surprise that people like Ed aren't doing political songs. The only one recently has been Katy Perry and that barely qualifies as one.

I'm waiting for Ellie Goulding to do something

Oh she will 👀

Ellie doesn't strike me as the type to get political, but I don't follow her on social so what do I know

Certainly a lot of their fanbase deserted them between Progress and III (Robbie and Jason leaving + tax scandal effect?), but it doesn't look like many more have disappeared between III and Wonderland. Even with the promo they've done, before this week I was struggling to envisage them selling over 70k in week one.

To go from a 518k first week to 145k in one fell swoop, you'd have sort of expected the rapid drop-off to continue down the line. Maybe not as steep as that but I certainly didn't expect to see them coming in at 115k, which is what they will likely achieve!

with that in mind, i feel like they may only shift like 20k in week 2. (or less).

Zedd sold more yesterday so not impossible! Sadly I think the Spotify upweight might keep him out though sad.gif

That's a shame, I feel as though Stay might stall at 11 for a few weeks at this point - shame really as it has all the potential to be a top 5 sad.gif

I hope Little Mix can re-enter the top 40 next week but with NMSS, not "Touch"

Posted by: cqmerqn Mar 30 2017, 07:12 PM

Hey smile.gif

Where are Issues and Green Light likely to finish? Plus will Anne-Marie hold on?

Also, where's Zara? Thanks laugh.gif

Really? They've not exactly sold much after the first initial sales flashes...

Had hoped for better from Take That than 3k more. At this rate 110,500 is tops for them.

I'm sorry but Wonderland is a GREAT album...it's def a grower!

When NOW 96 is released next week, I hope it's one of the tracks which isn't album-only so that it could boost the song into the top 40

Any chance of Julia Michaels rising to #12? She's been ahead of Rag'n'Bone Man for the past few days. I assume Katy Perry is #13 or #14?

Yeah, there's a strong chance she could rise to #12, although probably not any higher for this week. Katy is #14.

Just seems like a big first week sale to be a fanbase buy, albeit sales yday suggest otherwise - could be a biggish drop next week unless the promo has a good response!

Take That are performing on The One Show tomorrow night so that should help up hold up sales for the next week.

Should help keep the Album above Rag 'N' Bone Man next week then.
