It was looking like winning a few rounds ago, but that closeness is just too much to bear and Yellow gets the bronze medal. Released as the second single from Parachutes, it was really the song that started 'it' all if we interpret 'it' as bigger things than lower top 40 singles, Yellow received heavy rotation and usage in various media, it reached the top 5 over here, top 50 in the US. Co-produced by Ken Nelson, the song was written when asking the band to look up at the stars and the most memorable line was born and the rest of the song was put together by Chris' friend, Stephanie, who he had seen at the time and was looking for a colour to fit the songs concept, so he named it Yellow in reference to her 'yellow' glow, there was no other significance of the colour and the lyrics ended up making very little sense, but it stuck and the song has a loose meaning of a bright hopeful and devoted song with various actions that show the depths of Chris' unrequited love. Also notable for its video featuring an entire take of Chris on his own walking up the beach in slow motion using a telecine process to have night transfer to day throughout the video. They'd go on to have more creative ideas but this is a subtle and nice beginning to that. It has been covered many times, including very recently by Jodie Whittaker and a Chinese language cover for the film, Crazy Rich Asians, and remains one of their most well known and highly thought of songs. I won't lie that amongst the top 5, it's probably my least favourite, but that's only due to the strength of what's around it. I have only positive feelings towards it. It's a lovely, bright yet also melancholy listen and still sounds wonderful twenty years on.
