Into August, and Lana grabs her first #1 of five top 5s this year this week. Previous #1s Seasons Run and Ruleta are steady within the top 5 for a fourth week each, joined by my Buzzjack Song Contest entry for this month, Smallpools’ Million Bucks (check it out and support if you like!) and a zoom up the chart for Deaf Havana’s Happiness. Two more tracks I had as BJSC potentials for this month are also in this week’s top 10, Chelsea Cutler’s Sixteen and Honor by DJ Cassidy and Grace, this week’s highest new entry.

BJSC (which I’m only a recent contributor to) provides a few more tracks this week, previous contest entrant Theia’s Roam was a recent discovery of mine and debuts just inside this week’s top 20, while down the lower end the new tune by Alteria’s entry to the last contest, Fjokra, squeaks in. Shallows, LIGHTS, Kesha, and Yungen also enter the top 20 this week. As for brand new entries, as well as the aforementioned, this week sees new (and recent) tracks enter from HUGEL, Foals, Childish Gambino, L Devine, Zedd, Scooter, Capital Cities, 2 Chainz, Illenium and RKCB.

New entries will be getting individual video links and a bit of commentary later on in the week, so check back and that’ll save you having to search them out individually, I’ll update the thread title accordingly when those are done.
For now, the top 40 for this first week of August – and I think just about my first anniversary of doing these:

Quite a lot of new entries this week so I'll be splitting this section in half. As the long summer continues, tracks are starting to stick around a bit longer in the chart, even though lots are still dropping like flies to make room for new entries every week. Once again, this week's chart features four former #1s; the entirety of the top 3, and Wild Thoughts, which rebounds this week to take a sixth week in the top 20 of seven total charting weeks. This year so far, Dua Lipa's leading the list for #1s, holding the top spot for 6 of the 32 weeks so far this year. Martin Garrix is just behind with 4, and then Jhene Aiko and the Chainsmokers, with 3 respectively, from their collab Wake Up Alone. Can New Rules come along and extend Dua's lead? You'll have to check back next week to find out wink.gif

Now, for this week's new bunch, let's get cracking.

Up first, a rare tune that I discovered from the official singles chart, something that hasn't really happened since before they changed the streaming rule as not much that wasn't heavily promoted all over was making it in for these last few years. I still don't know much about either Yungen or Yxng Bane apart from British, and rappers, neither actually seems to even have a wikipedia page as yet which makes getting an official top 40 hit all the more impressive imo. I'll look out for more from the lads, this is a great summer bop.

A new discovery for me, thanks to either spotify or youtube, I'm not exactly sure, but apparently one discovered by the good folk at BJSC several months ago, as I discovered when intending to submit it as my entry for the most recent contest. It's Theia's debut appearance for me and zooms straight into the top 20 after picking up trickle plays for the last few weeks.

This one's also quite new, but not the debut appearance for HUGEL; the producer ended up in my year-end top 100 last year with Jasmine Thompson collab Where We Belong. This is just the latest case of a fairly on-trend dance track that doesn't seem to've done much anywhere. I like it tho, and I'm happy to share it on to any folks reading this.

More dance, less inspired. I liked this track when I first heard it... until it got to that chorus. Really not great. So far it's 2 for 2 with Liam I've not been that impressed with, and likewise for Zedd to an extent. In retrospect I'm not surprised this didn't do so well on the official chart either.

Another late discovery! But it's only just taking off in the US now, so I guess I'm on time somewhere in the world. I could have sworn this was a female singer the first time I heard it (I heard vibes of Macy Gray), but it's actually just the latest incarantion of Childish Gambino aka Donald Glover aka TroyAndAbedInTheMorning!™ The defining feature of this track is smooth, with some strong retro, even back to 70s influences. Much better than Uptown Funk.

This is actually quite a dance heavy section, not deliberately on my part. Second charter this year for both Illenium and Nevve, the former following Sound of Walking Away with Kerli, the latter following #1 on my charts Sway with Syn Cole. Fractures is another mellow midtempo from Illenium and is another strong track from his latest era. I wouldn't be surprised to see the producer pick up some more mainstream success if he keeps on putting out these kinds of tracks. It's actually a little older, but after the success of Sway, I've been looking back to see what other tracks Nevve has been on.

Debut for L Devine, an indie pop track that's another I considered sending to BJSC97 and briefly, BJSC98 when it comes around. (Since we qualified with Smallpools though, I'm not too fussed to let this one go). She's very new, with only circa 500 likes on her facebook, but this one plays well with the likes of Sabrina Carpenter, Maggie Linderman and Hailee Steinfeld. Worth checking out if you're a pop fan.

And a bit of Scooter to close off this section. I'm actually slightly embarrassed to chart this as it's not normally my kind of thing, but it picked up a few plays at an oldschool party I hosted a few weeks ago and has boosted itself in to the top 40. And I don't want to start being dishonest about what's charting, rather leave that to the official top 40. Scooter's very simple formala hasn't really changed, stadium-ready, high energy, and often a little manic dance tunes, sometimes with a bit of help from heavily pitched-up vocals. There's actually none of those here, which is maybe why this isn't doing so well anywhere. Or it could be because the 2000s are gone and hopefully, please god, won't be coming back for a while. We can only hope.

Part II to come! Feel free to fire away any comments or thoughts in the meantime wink.gif

Hey Jupiter

Not heard that Lana song but I'm not feeling her era in general this time so it could be a while before I get round to it.

Great to see Bestie enter dance.gif such a brilliant song!

Redbone is quite a good track, I like the chilled vibe to a lot of Gambino's stuff

Oh that's cool to see Scooter enter, I still am a huge fan of theirs & Bora! is a pretty decent effort if a long way off their best

In My Head was a minor BJSC hit last year, I thought was ok but I think just missed my points.

Cool chart cool2.gif

And for the second bunch:

Honor brings together the unlikely trio of Grace (of You Don't Own Me), Lil Yachty (Broccoli, After the Afterparty) and DJ Cassidy (that awful wannabe hit song with Jessie J and Robin Thicke fresh off the back of Blurred Lines a few years ago) and is actually... pretty damn good. The track released two or three months ago and I stuck it into my 200-track strong B-list playlist off the strength of liking Grace's recent stuff, but I didn't really get into it until a few weeks to a month ago. The video's just been released, so it might still be seeing a push. It's a very fresh sounding track among a lot of soundalikes released the last few months.

Matter's another slow burner, having been on my radar and playlists since about May. A recent surge sees it finally charting this week, a debut charter for group Shallows, more of whose work I will be checking out as I enjoyed this one. It's classic 80s synth fare, if you follow my charts you'll know it's the kind of thing that tends to jam with me.

And from a slow burner to an absolute snail, a late charter here from Foals' 2015 album, sadly still their most recent release. To be fair, I only bought the album last year and this one didn't stand out when I was first playing it, but I went back to it recently and this one resonated stronger this time around. Night Swimmers is the band's fourth track from that album to chart, following Mountain At My Gates, Birch Tree, and Lonely Hunter.

A slightly surprising second charter for Steve James this year, who previously featured with LIGHTS collab Warrior. I'm always happy to find collaborations between artists where I know them both, so I couldn't resist checking out this collab with RKCB, who I've been following since 2014. This was doubly a good find as I've not been enjoying so much RKCB's recent solo work, so to hear the duo's signature sound on a good track was a welcome surprise. Joe Mason's the unknown here for me, but as this remix elevates the original a lot, I'll probably check out what else he's been up to, too.

Another unexpected collab now as one-hit wonder indie hitmakers Capital Cities (Safe and Sound, 2013) pair up with well-established rap guru Rick Ross on... a chirpy, summery track. 2017, eh. I've a lot of goodwill to CC from their previous hits and Rick Ross is one of my fave rappers generally, so this was a no-brainer for me, but still... talk about a left-field collab choice. Then again, this year also sees Coldplay teaming up with Big Sean, so I guess nothing can be taken for granted anymore.

Another collab here and it's one I mainly came to for Jhene Aiko's name. She doesn't get much to do on the track, unfortunately, but luckily It's A Vibe is decent enough to stand on it's own merits, a surprisingly classic and lowkey beat bringing back a bit of 90s throwback, with none of it's four contributing artists taking over or overpowering the song. It's a 2 Chainz song that manages to be pretty solid, now that's saying something. It's A Vibe gives Chainz his first top 40 this year, likewise for Trey Songz, Ty Dolla surprisingly his third after features with Derulo and Kriss Kross Amsterdam, and Aiko her fifth, following top 10s Hello Ego and Plz Don't Go with Cashmere Cat, solo comeback While We're Young, and Chainsmokers-featuring #1 Wake Up Alone. As you can probably tell, I'm a fan.

And this week closes with a nice number from BJSC96 discovery Fjokra, a Die Antwoord-esque Irish alt band. Because my music taste is pretty predictable, eh. Unfortunately I do not recall who sent them (if anybody can set me right there, please do!), but I'm pretty grateful to've come across them. Bang On The Door wasn't the song entered, but it's a more recent one and one I've really been enjoying this last month. And hey, I might as well support my people.

As that annoying pig says, th-th-th-th-that's all folks! Keep firing comments if you have thoughts biggrin.gif
