& me also Laura, I cannot believe that was over 11 years ago ohmy.gif . I still like that session . There was another he did I think for the BBC a few years back, I must try & find it, remember it was an accoustic session where the band members were standing on the floor around him & it was all very natural.

Max B was on that Abbey Road session too wasn't he? I love him.

Do you think Robbie did that song with him that he tweeted about or it hasn't happened yet? I think it was about the time he was ill so maybe they postponed.

I'd love to see them do a song/performance together C2018. What a treat that would be. happy.gif

I LOVE this track wub.gif

The first Robbie concert I saw was Leeds in 2006 and the Dutch television started with a Robbie Williams day.I had a day off and was suddenly hooked to the interviews from young Rob they showed. Then in the evening I saw the Leeds concert. I did not know one song. Not even Angels that evening (later I remembered that I once saw the black and white clip). I was so impressed also when he tumbled and stood up again. I loved Come Undone. Never had I thought that he was ill back then. Two months later they repeated the Berlin gig from 2005. I loved Ghosts, I still like a lot of songs from Intensive care. And Iliked the ending of Come Undone with WOTWS much better than the one he does today.

It was when all started for me. And my mum joined me. I still love to read and watch about him. But it is the first year that I do not follow up anything. The songs do not grip me that much anymore as they did. I read an article some days ago about popstars who lost their ability to write special songs when they found happiness. Sometimes I think this is the case with Rob at least for me.

That might be the case or it might be a recent tendency to play it safe with his releases. I read him say he needs to write for the middle ground so he can sell but I personally much prefer the songs where he goes in the direction he genuinely wants to go in. I don't like his edges being smoothed over. I wish he had the confidence to just go where his heart takes him. I think a lot more people would follow than he thinks.

I know that's easier said than done when you have a young family to think about and I know he was burnt by the whole Rudebox thing - but I like him at his eclectic best. smile.gif

Most of the albums theses days are centered around what would work in a stadium as that is where he does best these days so I am sure they will stick with that formula . As a fan I am delighted he is doing the UTR releases but it looks like we will never see songs like those on a commercial album so I feel we have the best of both worlds

I look at the likes of Tom Jones still working away at what over 70 so I think has a bit to go yet laugh.gif

& it did really well

Chart success

The song became a massive worldwide success for Williams, debuting inside the top ten in most countries around Europe, including number-two (behind Push The Button by Sugababes) in the United Kingdom, spending six weeks inside the top ten and fifteen inside the top seventy-five.[2] The single reached number-one in The Netherlands, Argentina, Germany (where it was his first #1 single[3]), Portugal, Italy, and Taiwan. In Switzerland, the single was certified Gold.[4] In Mexico, the song reached number-nine and became the eleventh most played track of the year.[5] In Australia, the single peaked at number-seven and went on to sell over 35,000 copies, being certified Gold by the ARIA.[6]

Certainly the second swing album for me was a low but in contrast to that was UTR1 which I absolutely love.

Although having said that - I loved the swing tour. that was great.

I just think it's such a waste when he covers other people's music. I want to hear his lyrics not someone elses.

I want the edgier stuff not cabaret. I think it's time to stop playing it safe. The stuff he plays on his Insta are great. Really fresh. Album sales are so low now anyway - he's got nothing to lose. Go with his heart. heart.gif

Robbie Williams | Complete Playlist https://open.spotify.com/user/robbiewilliamsofficial/playlist/6l0dAfnDtJtXBFVyWJnpqm?si=2CcnwFQNSDWDhC03WY7odw #NowPlaying

So many goodies that I haven't listened to in ages.

Sometimes the brouhaha that surrounds him gets in the way of the music but then I listen to an old song and remember that his music is what attracted me in the first place - and will always be there. cool.gif

I've got his first album. There are some lovely songs on it.

Fame doesn't seem to make him happy though does it?

He's taken up gardening you know? He was on Gardeners World a few week ago. He said it helps calm him.

I did see him on GW , I always liked Will , he is extremely talented & he did some great tours, a friend of mine used to go see him quite a lot. He has always been open about his mental health issues , all you want in life is to be as happy as you can be , I would love to see him do something again , is he doing anything in music these days ...

It's great isn't it. I love how they all had their bit to sing and he went over and stood with them and supported them.

I also love that he was so involved - he missed his cue. laugh.gif

I watched a little bit of Alicia and Aaliyah as I was queuing for pizza on Sunday afternoon and they did great. They were on one of the smaller stages doing a couple of songs. Lots of energy and lively crowd around them. Brilliant for kids so young.

He does indeed, he was at their Summer party & Robbie does not really 'do parties' so there is a reason he turned up ....

Do you know who the song is about Laura, great melody & so well delivered by Robbie wub.gif

from the album Reality Killed the Video Star · Copyright: Writer(s): Guy Chambers, Robert Peter Williams Lyrics Terms of Use

The Egyptians built their pyramids,
The Romans did what they did,
Now everything's come down to this,
It's just you and I our kid,We could send a million to the Moon,
But why can't I get on with you?
The cellophane around my mouth
Stops the anger seeping out our deaf and dumb dinners,
Gravy in the mud,
No singles just fillers,
Sometimes I wish I could, but...

I can't behave
I know it's not the heathen in me
It's just that I've been bleeding lately
Internally, don't turn to me,
Bite your tongue, the torrid weapon
You could learn a useful lesson
What's so great about the great depression?
Was it a blast for you?
'Cause it's blasphemy, words cut like a knife through vaseline
You can't really mean what you mean
When you say what you say
Tourettes make them come out that way."Wish I was here", well I wish you weren't
Your gift of anger's better burnt
If nothing's said, and nothing's learnt,
I thought I wasn't but I'm really hurting

Our deaf and dumb dinners,
There's gravy in the mud and...I can't behave
No it's not the heathen in me
It's just that I've been bleeding lately
Internally, don't turn to me,
Bite my tongue, the torrid weapon
I could learn a useful lesson
What's so great about the great depression?
Was it a blast for you?
Blasphemy, our great adventure,
Christmas in the snow,
Senile dementia which way to go I can't behave
I know it's not the heathen in me
It's just that I've been bleeding lately
Internally, so turn to me,
Bite your tongue, your torrid weapon
We could learn a useful lesson
Ain't it great this great depression?
It's not a blast for me
It's blasphemy

Singing for the lonely
You're not the only ones who feel this
So scared of what we're doing
All the time
Here comes wasted head-space
Paranoia
Anger, misplaced feelings
Leave me nowhere
All the time
I don't wake up early in the morning
'Cause the more I sleep the the less I have to say
Scared of you always thinking that I'm boring
Stop me yawning my life away
Tender young confusion
Send black mariah for blue delusions
Lays heavy oh so heavy
On my mind
I'm so sick of people's expectations
Leaves me tired all the time
If your home's full of useless aggravation
Then don't bring it to mine
I seem to spend my life
Just waiting for the chorus
'Cause the verse is never nearly
Good enough
The hooligan half of me
That steals from Woolworths
While the other lives for love
I'm so sick of people's expectations
Leaves me tired all the time
If your home's full of worthless aggravation
Then don't bring it to mine
Singing for the lonely
We're not the only ones who feel this
So scared of what I'm doing
All the time
Singing for the Lonely
We're not the only ones who feel this
Scared of what we're doing
All the time

Silence shields the pain, so you say nothing
Feel they've rigged the game and you're done with lovin'
Only you can see the darkness in the northern lights
Phoenix from the flames, we will rise together
They will know our names, can you feel it?
Shelter me from pain, I always wanna feel this way, oh yeah
Just like a phoenix from the flame
Wish they'd take you back 'cause you miss Heaven
Too many bags to pack, so leave them where they are
Tonight, you're flying on a golden dream
Phoenix from the flames, we will rise together
They will know our names, can you feel it?
Shelter me from pain
I always wanna feel this way, oh yeah
Everybody's talking, nobody's listening
Too busy thinking about what you've been missing
Everybody said "You're gonna take it too far, baby, now"
Well come on
When you're done with lovin'
It comes down to nothing
Can you feel it?
Can you feel it? Can you feel it?
Phoenix from the flames, we will rise together
They will know our names, can you feel it?
Shelter me from pain, I always wanna feel this way, oh yeah
Just like a phoenix from the flame
Phoenix from the flames
They will know our names, can you feel it?
Shelter me from pain, I always wanna feel this way, oh yeah
Just like a phoenix from the flame
Why don't you come and deny it?
You know you can't deny it
I always wanna feel this way
Just like a phoenix from the flames

Tell me a story
Where we all change
And we'd live our lives together
And not estranged
I didn't lose my mind it was
Mine to give away
Couldn't stay to watch me cry
You didn't have the time
So I softly slip away
No regrets they don't work
No regrets they only hurt
Sing me a love song
Drop me a line
Suppose it's just a point of view
But they tell me I'm doing fine
I know from the outside
We looked good for each other
Felt things were going wrong
When you didn't like my mother
I don't want to hate but that's
All you've left me with
A bitter aftertaste and a fantasy of
How we all could live
No regrets they don't work
No regrets they only hurt
(We've been told you stay up late)
I know they're still talking
(You're far too short to carry weight)
The demons in your head
(Return the videos they're late)
If I could just stop hating you
(Goodbye)
I'd feel sorry for us instead
Remember the photographs (insane)
The ones where we all laugh (so lame)
We were having the time of our lives
Well thank you it was a real blast
No regrets they don't work
No regrets they only hurt
Write me a love song
Drop me a line
Suppose it's just a point of view
But they tell me I'm doing fine
Everything I wanted to be every
Time I walked away
Every time you told me to leave
I just wanted to stay
Every time you looked at me and
Every time you smiled
I felt so vacant you treat me like a child
I loved the way we used to laugh
I loved the way we used to smile
Often I sit down and think of you
For a while
Then it passes by me and I think of
Someone else instead
I guess the love we once had is
Officially dead

Happy Song
Robbie Williams
Let's all make babies
And salsa from Sainsbury's
'Cause this is a Happy Song
Play on my pink flute
But make it through Beirut
'Cause this is a happy song
You need a mood maker
Then go meet my tailor
I know it's going too fast
Your sister your brother
His mistress your lover
Is getting on with it
Yeah ( debonair )
I'm feeling so debonair ('cause I care )
Send you my love 'cause I care (it's a love song )
This is a love song
We bring news from Jamaica
Goose step through Gangland
And drive Chitty Ban Bang
'Cause this is a happy song
Bosnians and Kurds
Back with some big bird
Who's singing a happy song
Fly in the sunshine
Get there at your own time
You tell us if I'm in Hong Kong
Your sister your brother
His mistress your lover
Just singing a happy song
Yeah (… music.gif

I'm sure I've said this a million times but I'll say it again. happy.gif

In 2008 - my Mum and I went up to Stoke -on -Trent for the weekend to check out all things Robbie.

The Red Lion pub was still open and not too tatty in those days.

We walked in on the Saturday evening and as I pushed the door open, the sound of RW Misunderstood was coming out the jukebox. It was the strangest thing. laugh.gif It felt like we were in a film.

We had a great night in there and an old fella in a long coat and Panamas hat tried to chat up my Mum. laugh.gif

We had such a laugh that night. Went for a curry in Burslem after I remember. happy.gif

Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
And that's the way it's gonna be

All we've ever wanted is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection from my reflection
I want perfection

Praying for the rapture
'Cause it's stranger getting stranger
And everything's contagious
It's the modern middle ages
All day every day
And if Jesus really died for me
Then Jesus really tried for me

Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
And that's the way it's gonna be

All we've ever wanted is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection from my reflection
I want perfection

Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
And that's the way it's gonna be

All we've ever wanted is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection from my reflection
I want perfection

Jesus didn't die for you
What do you want? (I want perfection)
Jesus didn't die for you
What are you on? (I need some)
Jesus didn't die for you
Jesus didn't die for you
Jesus didn't die for you

OMG !! , you are so right Elisabeth ohmy.gif

Save our souls we're splitting atoms
Go tell Eve and go tell Adam
Liberate your sons and daughters
Some are gods and some are monsters

We'll get a five minute warning for divine intervention
With the satellites falling, prepare for ascension
Under mind control
We'll be practising our politics
Defending all our policies
Preparing for apocalypse

Don't let the hungry serpent see you no
She'll let you fall asleep then eat you whole
It's like a bullet to the head

It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Oh yes, oh yes, it's an SOS
It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Like a bullet in the head, it's an SOS

When the levee breaks
And Manhattan sinks
There won't be water fit to drink
When the winter's warm
And the summer's cold
The poison stops you looking old

You'll get a five second warning for divine and intervention
And the satellites are falling, prepare for ascension
As the earth looks on
The odds or probability
Of losing all capacity
To function it's hereditary

No antibiotic can save us now
We are the virus that we talk about
It's like a bullet to the head

It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Oh yes, oh yes, it's an SOS
It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Like a bullet in the head, it's an SOS
It's an SOS it's an SOS
Oh yes, oh yes, it's an SOS
It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Like a bullet in the head, it's an SOS

(Without criticism
No administration and no country can succeed
And no republic can survive)
Like a bullet in my head
Like a bullet in my head

It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Oh yes, oh yes, it's an SOS
It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Like a bullet in the head, it's an SOS
It's an SOS it's an SOS
Oh yes, oh yes, it's an SOS
It's an SOS, it's an SOS
Like a bullet in the head, it's an SOS

What a great tune , never tire of listening to this song music.gif

Me And My Monkey
Robbie Williams
There was me and my monkey
And with his dungarees and rollerblades
Smoking filter tips
Reclining in the passenger seat of my supercharged jet black Chevrolet
He had the soft top down
He liked the wind in his face
He said "Son, you ever been to Vegas?"
I said "No" he said "That's where we're gonna go,
You need a change of pace"
And when we hit the strip with all the wedding chapels
And the neon signs he said
"I left my wallet in El Segundo"
And proceeded to take two grand of mine
We made tracks to the Mandalay Bay hotel
Asked the bell boy if he'd take me and my monkey as well
He looked in the passenger seat of my car
And with a smile he said
"If your monkey's got that kind of money sir,
Then we've got a monkey bed"
Me and my monkey
With a dream and a gun
Hoping my monkey
Don't point that gun at anyone
Me and my monkey
Like Butch and the Sundance Kid
Trying to understand
Why he did what he did
Why he did what he did
And at the elevator I hit the 33rd floor
He had a room up top with a panoramic views
Like nothing you've ever seen before
He went to sleep in the bidet and when he awoke
He ran his little monkey fingers through the yellow pages
Called up escort services and ordered some okey doke
Forty minutes later there came a knock at the door
In walked this big, bad-ass baboon into my bedroom
With 3 monkey whores
"Hi, my name is Sunshine. These are my girls.
Lace my palm with silver baby oh yeah
And they'll rock your world"
So I watched pay per view and polished my shoes and my gun
Was diggin old Kurt Cobain singin' 'bout lithium
There came and knocked at the door and in walked Sunshine
"What's up?" - "You better get your ass in here boy
Your monkey is having too much of a good time"
Me and my monkey
Drove in search of the sun
Me and my monkey
Don't point that gun at anyone
Me and my monkey
Like Billy the Kid
Trying to understand
Why he did what he did
Why he did what he did
Got tickets to see Sheena Easton
The monkey was high
Said it was a burning ambition to see her before he died
We left before encores
He couldn't sit still
Sheena was a blast baby
But my monkey was ill
We went to play black jack
Kept hittin' 23
Couldn't help but notice this Mexican just staring at me
Or was it my monkey?
I couldn't be sure
It's not like you've never seen a monkey in rollerblades
And dungarees before
Now don't test my patience cause we're not about to run
That's a bad-ass monkey boy and he's packing a gun
"My name is Rodriguez" he says with death in his eye
"I've been chasing you for a long time amigos
And now your monkey is gonna die"
Me and my monkey
Drove in search of the sun
Me and my monkey
We don't wanna kill no Mexican
But we got ten itchy fingers
One thing to declare
When the monkey is high
You do not stare
You do not stare
You do not stare
Looks like we got ourselves a Mexican stand off here boy
And I ain't about to run
Put your gun down boy
How did I get mixed up with this f***in' monkey anyhow

Starstruck

Robbie Williams
You laugh at us, we're different,
And we laugh 'cause you're all the same.
By the look on your face baby,
We've been enjoying ourselves again.
I know that you cry.
I know why you tried so hard
Ready, steady, go,
Everybody famous,
Everyone you know,
Why'd it take you ages?
I don't have to listen, read, love like you,
I've got no problem with the physical, minimal real life.
Living in hysterica for everybody's betterment.
Isn't it a miracle, everybody starstruck.
I guess the odds are very good,
But the goods are very odd,
And even though I talk with the devil,
I only made the deal with god.
I am a long list,
Knock one off the wrist,
So hard.
Ready, steady, go,
Everybody famous,
Everyone you know,
Why'd it take you ages?
I don't have to listen, read, love like you,…

United

You sit and scream at all the scandal
That put the monkey on your back
Don't put your idols on a mantel
You'll only want your money back
Don't slap my face and call me brother
Lend me a hand and knock me out
So one disciple to another
What's this s*** really about?
Are we united?
'Cos I'm really not that sure
When you've decided
Spread some love and ask for more
I sit and think about my maker
And what he's got in store for me
I wanna be a right-on daddy
Protect my wife and family
Runnin' out of love
Got a pain in my head
It's bringing me down
Got send me something
Got a gun on my hip
Real tight grip
Don't give me no lip
Boy send me something
When a woman needs a man
Man do what you can
Lend them a hand
And send them something
Send them something
Runnin' out of love
Got a pain in my head
It's bringing me down
Got send me something
Have you decided to spread some love
And ask for more?
Have you decided to spread some love
And ask for more

I listened to Intensive Care yesterday, still think that it is one of his best albums. I wonder what Stephen Duffy is doing these days

Posted by: Sydney11 Apr 13 2020, 08:04 AM

It's a favourite album of mine Elisabeth, has great depth to it

Stephen does the folk festivals mainly

Things changed for him financially after IC

Here is an old article I found in the Guardian, ( some interesting comments as well ) , makes interesting reading

Cult heroes: how did Stephen Duffy's knack for gold-plated whimsy not make him a star

He was the original singer in Duran Duran, before briefly becoming a teen heart-throb. But Stephen Duffy’s most memorable music is burnished folk rock

There’s an argument to be made for Stephen “Tin Tin” Duffy being the unluckiest man in pop history who hasn’t actually died. In 1979, aged 19, he quit as singer and bassist with the band he’d founded with a couple of Birmingham Poly mates called Nick Rhodes and John Taylor, just months before the ridiculously named combo – like, Duran Du-what? – signed to EMI with their new singer, Simon Le Bon. In the early 80s he became the very definition of a one-hit wonder, recording and releasing Kiss Me numerous times until the world stopped listening. And when his ship finally came in, on the day Robbie Williams chased him down the street to beg him to write the extra songs on his Greatest Hits album, the results were the execrable Radio – a hefty cheque that Duffy must have shamefully cashed in disguise when it became his first No 1 – and the 2005 album Intensive Care, a global smash and 8m seller, but a blot even on Williams’s reputation, let alone Duffy’s.

An eternal nearly man who finally cashed in his credibility, you might think. Yet 20,000 leagues beneath the charts, Duffy has created some of the most sublime and artful pop moments of the past 30 years. Even his first album, 1985’s The Ups and Downs, was a far more sophisticated piece than the slick Nik Kershaw pop it set out to emulate. Tucked between the slapped basses of Kiss Me, She Makes Me Quiver and Icing on the Cake were sharp-witted pop tunes such as But Is It Art? and gorgeous modern homages to Anthony Newley, Nick Drake and the music-hall tradition such as Wednesday Jones and The World at Large Alone. These were the romances of poverty stricken teenagers played out on Birmingham’s drizzliest petrol station forecourts and New Street platforms, full of bandstand horns and mournful rinky-dink piano. Archaic and glossily voguish at once, they sounded like British pop music perfected.

It was this knack for gold-rimmed whimsy that Duffy rolled over into his plush folk/country band the Lilac Time, formed in 1987. The Lilac Time made four immaculate, timeless albums in their first phase; 1988’s self-titled debut and 1989’s Paradise Circus particularly feel like having warm honey poured into your ears. Listening to them now, it seems unfathomable that melodic wonders such as American Eyes, Return to Yesterday and Together, the euphoric scat pop of Too Sooner Late Than Better and sumptuous ballads And the Ship Sails on, The Last to Know and The Beauty in Your Body weren’t ushered into the lexicon of superlative folk classics faster than Beyoncé into Oscar de la Renta. Yet, bewilderingly, the Lilac Time never even cracked the top 70 in the UK. Too polished for the indiepop scene and too rootsy for the James fans, they sat awkwardly alongside the Everything But the Girls and Fairground Attractions of the world, while being considerably more stylish and ethereal. They were truly a band out of time.

Thankfully, the industry appreciated Duffy’s sombre genius. By their fourth album, 1991’s sublimely wintry Astronauts, they were signed to Creation and managed by Alan McGee, and following the Lilac Time’s split, Duffy became something of an elder statesman of the Britpop scene. He formed Me Me Me with Alex James and Elastica’s Justin Welch and released several brilliant – and inevitably underrated – solo albums culminating in the autobiographical I Love My Friends in 1998. Charming, touching and at times profoundly upsetting, it was a memoir of young loves and naive pop dreams that descended into raw tragedy on The Postcard, in which Duffy comes across a forgotten photograph of himself with a girlfriend who’d since died, and mourns her afresh. Heart-stopping stuff.

With such immense artistic achievement, slim reward and vast array of short-lived record deals behind him, you can’t begrudge Duffy stooping to low pop arts to finally make his fortune. But you can applaud his tenacious talent; the reformed Lilac Time released an eighth album, No Sad Songs, in April and a single live date – at the Port Eliot festival on 1 August – has been announced. The ship sails graciously on …

Stephen Duffy Interview: ‘I appreciate the past but I’ve never been nostalgic’

He left Duran Duran before they hit big and only ever achieved two Top 20 hits in his career. But why is the man formerly known as Stephen ‘Tin Tin’ Duffy so loved and admired now? Classic Pop meets the intriguing pop chameleon to find out more about the real man behind the many guises…

Nursing a pint of Cornish stout in a dark harbourside tavern, a softly-spoken, unassuming man shares anecdotes on daily life. You know, those things we can all relate to – surviving the school run, the latest round of Brexit uncertainty, forming a band with a bunch of college mates.

“I got in with a bad crowd,”explains a deadpan Stephen Duffy, “…started Duran Duran.”And then that signature mischievous grin, one that appears whenever he casually drops a bombshell – one of many scattered over a sprawling two-hour conversation, covering everything from Margaret Thatcher to the joys/evils of streaming. Other choice nuggets include turning down Madonna, forming a Britpop supergroup – oh, and shifting millions of records with some bloke called Rob.

The man who once called himself Stephen ‘Tin Tin’Duffy is a fascinating character, one who has typically operated from the periphery, remaining wilfully out of step with what’s going on. As a result, record labels over the years have struggled with where to place him. But perhaps that’s been his biggest strength and it hasn’t stopped him contributing to album sales approaching 30 million (a conservative estimate).

The danger of emerging from a certain scene is remaining forever shackled to it. Yet Stephen Duffy has transcended his original synth-pop guise to cover a huge landscape across a career spanning four decades. He’s had as many incarnations as Bowie: That guy who founded (then promptly left) Duran Duran. 80s pop ‘one-hit wonder’. Early dance pioneer with Dr Calculus mdma.

English folk raconteur. Britpop poet. Honorary Barenaked Lady. That guy who co-wrote one of Robbie Williams’most successful records. One-half of The Devils with former bandmate Nick Rhodes… In other words, the most prolific one-hit wonder you’re likely to meet.

So, who is the real Stephen Duffy? Charming, affable and habitually self-deprecating, he’ll set himself up only to tear himself down again after a dramatic pause. He claims, tongue-in-cheek, to have been dropped by every major record label in the world – in itself a considerable accomplishment. But, by the same token he must have been signed by them all, too.

‘People take me places but I’m very happy not going anywhere. By the time I was 26, I never wanted to visit a nightclub again. I’d done so much promotion!’

He’s even had a label named in his honour, Needle Mythology, after his song of the same name – “a different kind of needle, of course.”

He’s had his share of demons. Now approaching 60, married with a daughter and living at an imposing address in a picturesque Cornish seaside town, it seems to have turned out alright in the end.

“We’ve got the studio in the basement and a couple of olive trees in the back garden,”he says wistfully. “People take me places, but I’m very happy not going anywhere. I mean, I’ve been out! When I was 25 they kept on taking me out to nightclubs. By the time I was 26 I never wanted to visit a nightclub ever again, I’d done so much club promotion!”

So, let’s talk about going out… Born in 1960, Stephen Duffy grew up in Birmingham in a typical 1930s house. Music was always there, Stephen often performing with older brother Nick. He recalls first hearing The Beatles aged three or four. “You saw the incredible effect that had on people, even before you understood what it was. The first band I ever went to see were The Incredible String Band at Birmingham Town Hall, I was nine or 10. And then Fairport Convention and all of that Witchseason/Joe Boyd stuff was incredibly important to me, and obviously Dylan. Then, there was punk…”

It was around this time that he enrolled at art college, and got in with that ‘bad crowd’.

“The amazing thing is it’s actually 40 years next month since the first [Duran Duran] gig. We’d arrived at art college… I’d seen the bands John [Taylor] had been in, but we didn’t know each other. I walked over to him and the first thing I said to John was, ‘Do you want to start a band?’So, we wrote some songs when we should’ve been working – that was September. By April, the next year, we’d got Nick [Rhodes] on synth and we’d written these songs… I’d written these songs. We rehearsed and then performed them at the lecture theatre – and that’s kind of what I’ve done with my life since. You write 10 songs, you perform them live or you make a record. This next Lilac Time record will be the 20th time of doing that!”

His eyes suddenly light up. “Actually, I think I named them! John said, ‘Did you see Barbarella on the television last night? There’s this character called Durand Durand’– with a ‘D’on the end… We were in the art college at the time, so I went and got the type and typeset ‘Duran Duran’. I don’t think they had more than two ‘D’s… maybe they did! So by doing that, I think maybe I should…”

Speak to your lawyers? “Definitely,”he laughs, “it’s my name, isn’t it! No… but, obviously, I still talk to Nick. We made The Devils album.”

2002’s supremely overlooked Dark Circles was the result of discovering original tapes from those early days followed by a chance encounter with Nick. In other words, the album Duran Duran might have made with Stephen at the helm. An artier, darker proposition.

The Devils“Yes, but we would’ve been supporting Echo & The Bunnymen! I don’t think it’s what they’d have wanted.”

At this point, Bowie was setting the bar of artistic expression. “In that Duran age when I was there, ‘78 and ‘79, it was Low and Heroes. You’d listen to these snatches of songs like Always Crashing In The Same Car – this incredibly oblique, fractured thing – and think, ‘This is exactly what we have to do!’”

Perhaps it was already clear by now that they were destined to take different paths – one ‘oblique and fractured’, the other firmly rooted in the pop limelight.

“I did a live radio interview last Friday, and every time we came back, it was like, ‘Now we’re with the founding member of Duran Duran’. Like, Jesus, do we really have to keep banging on about this?!”

But, it’s a part of his identity, though by no means the only thing to define him. “I’m completely happy with it.

I think it’s probably more annoying for them,”he says with a grin, “because it sort of undermines their unity having this weirdo who is known as being the ‘founder member’. I’m more of a thorn in their side, than they are in mine!”

Duffy’s exit marked the start of a colourful career, sealed with the hit Kiss Me. But also a career characterised by leftfi eld choices, much to the frustration of his latest label. Second solo album, Because We Love You, produced by Smiths collaborator Stephen Street, saw him increasingly ditch the synths in favour of more organic, acoustic instrumentation.

‘It was an amazing opportunity to work with an artist who just didn’t care. He didn’t even call himself Robbie Williams at that point’

“But the record company kept on saying, ‘No, we really just want you to be a dance artist. Maybe if you don’t sing and get a girl in to sing!’”Listening to Nick Drake changed everything. “It hit me that this was my thing. So I went and recorded the first Lilac Time record, knowing we’d part company.”

Of all the guises he’s adopted, this is clearly the one he’s most comfortable with, his natural fit.

“I was 26 and at some point you have to do what you want to do, don’t you?”He breaks into character. “I wanted to get loaded and have a good time… and that’s what I went and did. When you’re young, you think, ‘I’m 30 in four years, I’ve just got to get on with it now.’I thought when you’re 30 you’re going to be a bald, old man and nobody was going to take you seriously. I really did, I was very depressed. On my 29th birthday I was virtually suicidal. So that’s why I did it then, and ever since I’ve done it because it’s what I naturally do. I enjoy country music more than any other, like George Jones and Lefty Frizzell. It doesn’t stop me doing other music, but that’s my thing.”

Despite a steady underground following, both solo and with The Lilac Time, another big breakout hit remained elusive. However, Duffy’s increasingly assured catalogue was gaining him some influential fans. His friendship and collaborations with a young devotee, Steven Page, led to repeated multi-platinum success with the latter’s band, Barenaked Ladies.

Then another fan, ‘that guy who left Take That’, came calling. A No.1 single, Radio, on Robbie’s globe-conquering Greatest Hits cemented a three-year writing partnership. The resulting album, Intensive Care, sold a million in its first week alone, with sales at the last count approaching 10 million worldwide.

Duffy and Robbie

It’s another association that’s proved both a blessing and a curse. A commercial high-water mark, but also an anomaly that doesn’t necessarily sit right with his story.

“It’s certainly not something I would erase. It was such a fantastic opportunity to use all of my skills, and to work in those great Los Angeles studios, like A&M, where The Carpenters and Joni Mitchell recorded. Apparently, the ghost of Karen Carpenter walks the corridors at night. And I got to work with Beck’s dad [David Campbell], who has arranged the strings on so many amazing records.”So what was the writing process with Rob like?

“We jammed. We spent hours just kind of… he played bass, I played guitar, he played the synth, I played the maracas.

So everything came from a completely different place. But it was an amazing opportunity to work with an artist who just didn’t care. He didn’t even want to call himself Robbie Williams at that point. It was just amazing fun… and I got to live in an LA penthouse for three years!”

‘I appreciate the past but I’ve never been nostalgic’

They then took the record on the road, with Stephen as musical director. “We did this huge world tour, but he wasn’t into it really… I think he wanted to get into the Rudebox thing and do even more electronic music.”

Suddenly now finding himself performing to stadiums was a shock. “It made me realise I wasn’t really cut out for that kind of thing. I’d have been hopeless, it taught me that!”

So, was his huge success with Robbie a vindication of taking a different path?

“The funny thing is, you have a lot of life, then you work with Robbie Williams and people ask you about that. Then you stop working with Robbie Williams and you go back to being the guy who left Duran Duran.”

He implies the association may have dampened his indie credibility. “I came back off that and we made a Lilac Time record and sold 500 copies. And it was like, ‘Oh, the good will that I had before seems to have strangely evaporated!’I don’t know whether… I suppose when you go and work with Robbie Williams, perhaps your next album isn’t going to be looked upon in the same way. And it certainly wasn’t.”

Which brings us neatly onto the new Lilac Time album, Return To Us. Did the band approach recording with a particular aesthetic in mind? “It always sounds the same because it’s me, my brother and my wife. My wife and I sing harmony together, and my brother plays the banjo out of tune. That’s basically all you have to know! And it’s great because we have a sound. The fact that it’s a deeply uncommercial sound that really hasn’t rocked many people’s boats is another thing.”

While writing began some time ago, the songs took on a new resonance with the turn of national events. “I wrote March To The Docks before the referendum and before anyone had said ‘Brexit’, so it’s amazing to have written a song that then becomes so resonant…”Sample lyrics include: ‘They’re changing the locks on our lives/ Every day another dream dies on us’. And then there’s the title track, with references to ‘changing a country’, ‘people making mistakes’ and civil war.

“Return To Yesterday was our first single in 1987 and we saw ourselves being quite a political band, to the point where I wrote a song called Let Our Land Be The One, where I’m furious about the privatisation of the water companies. So on this album, it’s like we’re singing the same old songs. ‘Come back, we’re still here!’– kind of blathering on about the injustices and the stupidity of everybody else on the right. “We live in very querulous times, it’s very mean-spirited.”

But if you’re expecting a dark album, the resulting LP is surprisingly optimistic in tone, even upbeat and celebratory on Return To Us itself. “Well, you’ve got to have a sense of humour, haven’t you? Otherwise, I mean it’s terrible because, having children, you look at them and they’re smiling, you’re smiling and then you turn on the radio…”

That softly-spoken voice can spew a considerable amount of vitriol upon the ‘morons’in charge, whether we happen to be talking about hapless politicians or record execs.

“You’re never going to understand why people thought that the other side was ever going to roll over, because, you know, when Thatcher was in we didn’t say, ‘Actually I think I’m going to give up being a socialist and become a complete c**t!’“You don’t do that, do you? You don’t change who you are.”

But put-downs that look savage on the page never sound so as he utters them. They come more from a state of bafflement that the world we inhabit can be so unbelievably bonkers. Still, he speaks fondly of the positivity and strength he finds in local community.

What Was I Thinking?
With the record’s release imminent, The Lilac Time will hit the road again later this year. “I enjoy playing now more than I ever have done, because I’m better now than I was. They don’t want some depressed guy who’s crippled with insecurity. I’m all about giving the people what they want, so I’ll be doing Kiss Me, Icing On The Cake… a little bit of tap dancing. But I play the old songs how I’d do it now, I’m not going to start playing the synth again.”

On the opening track of Return To Us, Stephen asserts: “I appreciate the past but I’ve never been nostalgic/ Life can be hard enough without all that bullshit.”He’s had some ups and his fair share of downs, but as he finishes his pint, he tells us: “I don’t look back at any of it with any sort of fondness, but I’m very happy that I’ve done it all.”

He doesn’t shy away from it either. “Nick Rhodes and I always thought we should go on tour with just two chairs, a table and a bottle of wine and some microphones, and just talk… No, I don’t think that’s going to happen, but I think we could fill theatres. Well, at least we wouldn’t have to play any music. That would be a great relief to everybody. Wouldn’t it be more interesting to be a raconteur than a folk singer?”

That said, this raconteur still has one thing yet to achieve. “I’m writing a book, I’ve been writing since 1978. Everything is in archive boxes, with dates on. I do have some funny stories. I haven’t told any of them today, obviously… No, I’m not going to tell you. It’s all in the book that’s never going to come out. It’s called What The f*** Was I Thinking?. Every chapter ends with that thought… ‘Why didn’t I get off that plane and write with Madonna, what the f*** was I thinking?’”

Until that manuscript sees light of day – and let’s hope it does – there’s a wealth of riches to be enjoyed in Stephen’s ever-swelling catalogue.

So, who is the real Stephen Duffy? Weirdo (his words). Heritage act in the cave (his words again). Here’s another label for him to grapple with: national treasure. An unconventional one, for sure, but sometimes the best things are.

Talking of Stephen Duffy. happy.gif

The Robbie version of Family Coach came up on my Ipod yesterday.

I've always liked that song but could never understand why it talks about the Apollo missions from the 1960s in a song that references 1981.

I now understand the original lyrics refer to 1968. cool.gif

also Robbie changed the lyrics to "Greenbank Road" for his version.

This is the Lilac time version. I like it.

Apollo 8 was 1968 , where did you get the 1981 reference , it's a nice song Laura, I like it

All aboard the family coach
It's leaving Bamville Road
Christmas, 1968
The Christmas when it snowed
Whilst on board the family coach
They were circling the moon
No one had been there before
And they'd be landing there in June

Hey, hey, family coach
My family coach
You've gotta make the most
The most of your family coach

Meanwhile on the family coach
The postillion quietly spoke
He said: "You cannot leave your family coach
And this is not a joke
We must work out our differences
Though none of us may change
We all take different routes through life
But your coach will stay the same"

Hey, hey, family coach
My family coach
You've gotta make the most
The most of your family coach

Back on board Apollo 8
They had gone behind
And the human family held it's breath
And wondered what they'd find
The family coach can stay on Earth
Or be a rocket ship
But where, wherever, wherever you may go
Your kin will share the trip

Hey, hey, family coach
My family coach
You've gotta make the most
The most of your family coach

Now it might well appear to you
That they were simpler days
And the family coach is smaller now
Some have passed away
But there's never been a golden age
Nostalgia's for the lame
The best is always yet to come
It's that kind of game

Hey, hey, family coach
My family coach
You've gotta make the most
The most of your family coach

I love this song

Please dont' die
Let me lie down
Please don't wake me
Nothing's sacred
And no one saved me
In my black eye
I can feel it
Moving closer
Can't you hear it
The only gift you gave to me
Was self-fulfilling prophecy
I need to change the sounds
That shape my life
And if you die before I leave
What on earth becomes of me
Look around there's no one here
To love me and hold me
Take me dancing
I love music
Keep on singing
We won't lose it
Picture me there
Missing no one
If young hearts run free
Why can't we go on
Go on 'til they kick us out
We've everything to talk about
I could bring a song into your life
If you should die before I leave
What on earth becomes of me
Look around there's no one here
To love me and hold me
Maybe I've been away too long
I know I'm not always right but is that wrong
They say there's nothing I can do
But talk to strangers and wait for you
If you should die before I leave
What on earth becomes of me
Look around there's no one
To love me and hold me
If you should die before I leave
What on earth becomes of me
Look around there's no one
To love me and hold me

On the Robbie version he changes the lyrics.

"Christmas 1981, Christmas when it snowed".

He also changes to "leaving Greenbank Road" which was his or his Nan's address can't remember which - in Stoke-on-Trent

She is Madonna is a much underrated song. Love it. Video was 'before its time'. I think if a young singer would have released Rudebox album these days it would be quite a success

You see the trouble with me
I'm a basket case
I don't think I can love, love, love
You see the trouble with you
Is your in love with me
What a strange thing to do
What a brave place to be
So we dive
On sunset strip
Our hearts so deep
I drown in it
And as it breaks
I swim through cracks
And leave with words
I can't take back
You see the trouble with me
Monkey see monkey do
There's no you in tomorrow
A better offer came through
You see the trouble with you
There's no trouble with you
So when you say that you love me
That stops me loving you
So she stays
On sunset strip
Our hearts so full
I drown in it
She's waiting for
My words to break
The one true love
I couldn't make
So she walks
That golden mile
Men will try
And catch her eye
We both know
What could have been
On sunset strip
Our broken dream

I'm on a mission
To abuse my position
Abuse it with you
Love, I'm a cynical bitch
I'm gonna scratch that itch
With a bitch like you
Harder thinkers make me miserable
Everything is unforgivable
If not for you
I wouldn't come at all
Find a place to crash
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
Move your phoney ass
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
Love me like I'm cash
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
You can feel the clash
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
If there's a freak in here
Looking for someone like me
I fit their description
Perfectly
Boom boom boom
I bet they'll desert you
They would if they met you
Met you with me
Every move you make is poetry
They all fake what you do naturally
If not for you
I wouldn't come at all
Find a place to crash
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
Move your phoney ass
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
Love me like I'm cash
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
You can see the clash
(Boom boom, boom boom labida)
Kiss me with your mouth
Teach me with your brain
All right
Oh yeah, oh yeah
Things that I say
When I say nothing at all
It leaves a taste in my stomach
And its no taste at all
I can sing, I can't dance
But it don't stop me at all
Its a ball and I'll call , if I call you at all
Love is the reason but it won't pay my rent
Only baloney fill your dish in the dent
I won't be happy till the moneys been spent
I forget to forget, oh forget, oh forget
Yeah yeah yeah yeah

I heart.gif everything about this song, IC went on to sell 6.2 ml copies worldwide,

King of Bloke & Bird

What you do speaks so loud
I cannot hear what you say
Except for the occasional word
Sulphates a sentimental sight it bothers me
No longer king of bloke and bird
All of my life
Searching hard
Down in the wires
Of love
Summer me now summer my life away
Summon me onto another day
A hand through the clouds keeps
Knocking me down
It's no less than I deserve
They built museums I don't visit them
I've made enough trouble of my own
Into the night
Searching hard
Look for the light
Of love
Summer me now summer my life away
Summon me on to another day
Summer the evening, winter ways
Are falling down again
I sing from the chaos in my heart, my heart
Then comes the evening that
Makes life worth living
Shoving the shoes out in the light
She walks in, I can hear her

Tripping

First they ignore you
Then laugh at you and hate you
Then they flight you
Then you win
When the truth dies
Very bad things happen
They're being heartless
Again
I know, its gonna, there's gonna be violence
I've taken as much as I'm willing to take
Why do you think we should suffer in silence
When a hearth is broken there's nothing to break
You've been mixing
With some very heavy faces
They boys have done
A bit of bird
They don't kill their own
And they all love their mothers
But you're out of your depth son
Have a word
I know, its gonna, there's gonna be violence
I've taken as much as I'm willing to take
Why do you think we should suffer in silence
The heart broken there's nothing to break
All is wonderful in this life
Dreaming of the sun she warms
You should see me in the afterlife
Picking up the songs of lures
When you think we're lost, we're exploring
What you think is work because I'm adoring
You don't want the truth, truth is boring
I've got this fever need to
Leave the house
Leave the car
Leave the bad men where they are
I'll leave a few shells in my gun
And stop me starring at the sun
I know, its gonna, there's be gonna violence
I've taken as much as I'm willing to take
Why do you think we should suffer in silence
My heart is broken there's nothing to break

Make Me Pure
Some will sing a song to reel 'em in
It's a song I sung before and a song I'm gonna sing again
I mean every word, I don't mean a single one of them
Oh Lord, make me pure but not yet
Tell a joke, tell it twice
If no one else is laughing there, why am I?
I split myself both times and laugh until I cry
Oh Lord, please make me pure but not yet
I don't have to try, I just dial it in
I've never found a job that for me was worth bothering
I got a ton of selfish genes and lazy bones beneath this skin
Oh Lord, make me pure but not yet
Smoking kills, sex sells
I've got one hand in my pocket but the other one looks cool as hell
I know I'm gonna die, so my revenge is living well
Oh Lord, make me pure but not yet
I stopped praying so I hope this song will do
I wrote it all for you
I'm not perfect but you don't mind that, do you?
I know you're there to pull me through, aren't you?
So I look for love, I like the search
And I'll be standing for election all across the known universe
Every president gets the country she deserves
Oh Lord, make me pure but not yet
And I've been seeing somebody's wife
She said she'd leave him for me and I said that wasn't wise
You can't lie to a liar because of all the lies
Oh Lord, please make me pure but not yet

Because I've been home all day and Heart London is on - I've realised they still play Robbie quite a lot.

I don't know if that's normal or because of lockdown, they're leaning towards music that people know and feel secure with - but I heard Feel twice today between 7 am and 4 pm and Rock DJ. So he got three plays in the space of 9 hours. I also heard them play Feel twice yesterday too. Funny enough I haven't heard Angels which you would think would be an obvious choice.

It was nice to hear but unexpected. happy.gif

I agree, the same in NL and Germany. Rob's songs a well feel songs (not all, but many). They also show regularly bits from his corona-oke sessions in TV. It is surprising that 30 years in business his actions are still worth a news. Some days ago his session with Gary made an entire article in one of Germany's most valued weekly broad sheets. The female thirtysomething author - I assume a TT and Rob fan - said that you could see why backthen Gary and Rob did not go on so well still now: Gary with conservative T-shirt and good haircut, Rob as if he just run away from jail (all funny and nicely meant)
I like a bit of Robbie more than usual in these days

Your Gay Friend

A woo hoo

Hey hey here comes no one
Another friend to have a go on
And she asks me do I miss her when she's gone?
And I reply "As much as I miss anyone"
Oh
A woo hoo
And I'll be your gay friend
'Cause your marriage never ends
Till we f*** and fight again
There's a space between us
So jump into my bed
Pretend the world is dead
Always in my head
Is a face between us
Hey Lord forgive us if we're wrong
And make sure that he never hears this song
And she says that I'm the opposite
Of a Hallmark card
She asks me how I'm feeling well
I don't want to think that hard
Oh
A woo hoo
And I'll be your gay friend
'Cause your marriage never ends
Till we f*** and fight again
There's a space between us
Jump into my bed
Pretend the world is dead
And always in my head
Is a face between us
It's the late show now
How does the late show end?
Well if god is in the details thank god that
You're my friend
I have a friend again
You are my friend again
My gay friend
Oh
A woo hoo
Jump into my bed
Pretend the world is dead
And always in my head
Is a face between us
And I'll be your gay friend
'Cause your marriage never ends
Till we f*** and fight again
There's a space between us
Oh
A woo hoo

Rudebox
Robbie Williams

(Do the rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Do the rudebox
Shake your rudebox)
OK then, back to basics
Grab your shell toes and your fat laces
A little hand clap for some funk faces
And make your body move in the following places
Goes up your back and then down your spine
And when it hits your head
OK then, back to bass-heads
Dance like you just won at the Special Olympics
They got the rudebox off the back of a spaceship
So sick I just had to take it
The R-U-D-E-B-O-X
Up your jacksy, split your kecks,
Sing a song of semtex
Pocket full of Durex
Body full of Mandrax
Are we gonna have sex (yes)
Do you wear your knee socks (ohh)
Back to the rudebox
Got this double fantasy
Where we just never stop
I've got one design
And that's to funk you to the top
Know what's on my mind,
It's only one thing you will find
I got one design
And that's to bump you till you drop
Rudebox
Do the rudebox
'Cause you so nasty
Rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Why you so nasty?
Rudebox
Do the rudebox
'Cause you so nasty
Rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Why you so nasty?
OK then, back to spaceship
Take both pills, f.uck the Matrix
Jack those Jills, shake your Playtex
Rock three stripes, not the Asics
A-D-I-D-A-S old school, 'cause it's the best
(Yes)
TK Maxx cost less
(Yes)
Jackson looks a mess
(Bless)
OK then, what to do
If you try to jack me I'll rudebox you
If you rudebox me I'll rudebox your whole crew
'Cause it's what I do
Ain't that right boo (true)
I'll ride with you
If you can get me to the border
'Cause the sheriff's after me
For what I did to his daughter
I did it like this
(You did it like that)
I love it when you double clap (clap)
Got this double fantasy
Where we just never stop
I've got one design
And that's to funk you to the top
Know what's on my mind,
It's only one thing you will find
I got one design
And that's to bump you till you drop
Rudebox
Do the rudebox
'Cause you so nasty
Rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Why you so nasty?
Rudebox
Do the rudebox
'Cause you so nasty
Rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Why you so nasty?
OK then, check the tan line
Make your body shape
Like you're stood on a land mine
Call me on my mobile
Not the land line
And jack the main line
At the same time
OK, this is what we do
Got a jam so fresh
It's nice for you
OK, give me what you got
And dial 808
For the bass to drop
OK then, what's the fracas
Grab your cardy
Your lead hat and the bus pass
You don't sweat much
For a fat lass
Grab your rudebox
'Cause your box is righteous
OK bum, rush the show
I got high speed dubbing on my stereo
And all the tunes in the box are the cherrio
I know I told you before,
Did you hear me though
Got this double fantasy
Where we just never stop
I've got one design
And that's to funk you to the top
Know what's on my mind,
It's only one thing you will find
I got one design
And that's to bump you till you drop
Rudebox
Do the rudebox
'Cause you so nasty
Rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Why you so nasty?
Rudebox
Do the rudebox
'Cause you so nasty
Rudebox
Shake your rudebox
Why you so nasty?
Do the rudebox
Shake your rudebox

Gosh !! this went down well live....love the song

Viva Life On Mars

I just wanna be [Repeat: x 4]
I lost all faith in what I know
The future doesn't need me
So I kick a boagen a wo and head it till it don't hurt no more.
Use my cuts and lacerations, feed myself a new sensation woah woah
Take a ride on your high horse
If the horse is blind, use the force
The falcon flies in two straight lines
Red five standing by
It's not a moon it's a space station
It feels good the good vibration woah woah
I know that you know some lovely people.
Send them all an invitation, yer party to a segregation woah. Woah
Viva life on mars I'm calling
Sending my frequency to the galaxy so you can see people down here
They don't want us to discuss the picture in the caves of us.
A nosebleed and a bag of coal then they put you in a hole.
We're knee deep in information
And they can't stop this conversation. Woah woah
I know that you know some lovely people.
Send them all an invitation, party to a segregation woah. Woah
Viva life on mars I'm calling
Sending my frequency to the galaxy so you can see we're all down here
I just wanna be [Repeat: x 8]
Love is natural love is good
Not everybody does it but everybody should.
With them and us we've made a mess,
Till they decide which god is best.
Free yourself from liberation from lake Geneva to the freeland station woah woah
I know that you know some lovely people.
Send them all an invitation, yer party to a segregation woah woah.
Viva life on mars I'm calling
Sending my frequency to the galaxy so you can see people down here

I also remember Progress Live Tour very much...
I had an experience with two concerts in Germany and they were my first Robbie's concerts since 2003.
Absolutely happiness what I will always be remember from that summer, also it was one of my first time when I came abroad and with my friends.
Amazing trip, so crazy run to the scene, waiting the concert since 10AM! And lads were much much younger smile.gif

I can't believe that since then I have been at 10 Robbie's concerts more but Progress Live and this Rob's appearance on LMEY will always in my heart.
I even want to cry a little with the joy of that moment blush.gif
Oh! And I know the best lyrics for description of my feelings:

The memories of something really good
Something truly real, that I've never found again

One of my favourite songs, even though it's a cover:

I went to Wembley to see them , it was my first time seeing all 5 together, really enjoyed it, Have some lovely memories from that weekend in London wub.gif

I have such happy memories of the Progress tour - being with my Mum and friends etc etc - times that will never come again. wub.gif

I can remember really enjoying the TT4 set at the start (never having seen them live before) and enjoying seeing them live.

I can remember my excitement as that caterpillar went off and I knew that Robbie was next. cheer.gif

Five years since we'd seen him live - the reception he got. It was amazing. yahoo.gif

Then The Flood - the first glimpse of all five together.

All the tracks from Progress that I love so much.

It was such a very special time. smile.gif

Unless Jason returns it will never be the same again and I'm happy for it to stay a memory.

Although when Robbie got his Brits Icon award in 2016 and the four of them sang together at The Roxy - it was almost as good. Such a lovely atmosphere - everyone was pleased to see them - the roof nearly came off and all that love between them. heart.gif

Something made me play this song this morning, it's good !!

Could not find a live performance of this song, I think it would be brilliant live ( if anyone can find a live version please post it ) smile.gif

Berliner Star

Dear Eva Friedel
Got a brand new needle for you
You said weed was evil
So we smoked it in the lobby in the hotel foyer
It wasn't even noon yet
We didn't want to peak too soon yet

But when the sun goes down through the after glow
The night is yours, but your mother should never know

Auf Wiedersehen Berliner Star
You rock like a bast*rd, plastered
You should have seen her
Everything we did was wunderbar
'Till God came between us and you fell for Jesus

Eva tore my heart out
I got wasted in action
But you know that I am a sucker for
Instant satisfaction
There's nothing more obscene now
Than seeing where I've been

But you learn you know, to see the after glow
You've got to burn to grow, but your
Mother should never know

Auf Wiedersehen Berliner Star
You rock like a bast*rd, plastered
You should have seen her
Everything we did was wunderbar
'Till God came between us and you fell for Jesus

You were everything, everything
Everything to me
You were everything, everything
Everything to me
You were everything, everything
Everything to me
You were everything, everything
Everything to me

Auf Wiedersehen Berliner Star
You rock like a baster, plastered
You should have seen her
Everything we did was wunderbar
'Till God came between us and you fell for Jesus

Everything, everything, everything to me
You were everything, everything
Everything to me
Everything we did was wunderbar
'Till God came between us and you fell for Jesus
You were everything, thing, thing
Everything to me
I still love you, I do
Everything, everything, everything now

The 80's

I smoked Consulates and Park Drive, drank Nookie Brown
Learned how to skive
Polo mints to hide my breath from my mum
Did a little weed cause it felt like fun
Did a little bit of speed if my friend had some
Nicked Volkswagen badges I'm a Beastie Boys son
Me so horny, me so young and I still get my washing done
Auntie Joe died of cancer God didn't have an answer
Rhythm was a dancer
Any room for a chancer? That's me in the corner, thanks sir!
I wore a troop track suit, British Knights shoes, Kangol hat like LL Cool's
Before I was 'avin it, 'avin it large
They nicked the BMX from out my garage
Knew it was Tier from off the estate cuz every time he'd see me, he'd smile like we were mates
From then on in I'd have to walk to me Nan's
And I'd dream my dreams through a sea of prams
Like a hooligan on the football stands
And I'd throw the v's to Leeds and West Ham
Then I ran, I ran so far away down Scotia Road to a taxi bay
Then I ran again cuz I couldn't pay, a Muslim didn't get his fare that day
I apologize today
Things are better when they start
That's how the 80s broke my heart
And who are you calling poof? You like Wham, man, I hate that stuff
And then my grandad died and left a hole in the family and lots of women had to nanny me
School was a laugh, they didn't have ADD, thick was the term they used for me
(Over and over)
Repeatedly
(Over and over)
Take my breath away take my breath away
Bidly bidly bidly bong
Pass it on the left hand side, right turn, Clyde
That girl in the fourth year, got pregnant and she was raised Catholic, brilliant!
I cried, she cried, we cried, her youth died
Drank cider in the cemetery
The year above us had discovered E and I said it weren't for me
?12.50? I could rob me mum's purse and buy one off chalcky
Met a girl on Monday, drank fizzy pop on Tuesday
Fingered her on Wednesday and on Thursday and Friday and on Saturday
Dumped by Sunday
Things are better when they start
That's how the 80s broke my heart
The wonder years, I've played my part
That's how the 80s broke my heart
Like I said, I lost my virginity to a girl called Anne-Marie, well she said she fancied me
And then she said "f*** me" and I thought 'f*** me, I'm all talk and it'll be over too quickly'
And it was but I couldn't care less, I'd seen a girl's part, made a mess on her dress, oh yes!
You're now rocking with the best, second person in my year that had seen a breast
I'm in my 30s now and I'm still impressed
Where are the Falklands mum? And what have they done?
Where do girls come from? Where do girls come from? Where do girls come from?
It's the 80s, what you looking at, ya mong?
So young, so long, so young, so long
Too short, so long
What you looking at ya mong?
Too short, so long, too short, so long
So long.

Knebworth has to be one of the best live versions of Rock DJ , makes you want to have been at that gig , this guy obviously did not know who Robbie was given what he says at the end .

We got to play some more of that Knebworth weekend , could do with some Robbie energy in our lives right now ... cool.gif

I am thinking about having a Knebworth late night get together over the weekend of Aug 1st/2nd/3rd , it's 17 years since that gig, can you believe it, I think it's worth celebrating, plays some of the songs from the venue, tell us where you watched it & what you remember about it & have the chit- chat etc

Is the Richard Gere gerbil story true?
Who came third in World War II?
Did Sooty sleep with Sue
These things I think about
When I'm out with you
What are the holes in biros for?
Which one's which in The Corrs?
Did Geoff Hurst really score?
Cause frankly you're a bore
And I'm not
And if it's leaving season
You're second on the bill
If you won't leave me baby
I'll find someone who will
I tried love
I'm sorry
I tried love
Does God ever get it wrong?
Where has Gary Barlow gone?
Why is Christmas day so long?
It just goes on and on and on
Like you
And if it's leaving season
You're the second on the bill
If you won't leave me baby

Dance With the Devil

I danced with the devil, he told me a story
About all the love that he wished he could send
I said buy me a pint, it will be alright in the end
He don't like to fight cos he thinks he's too pretty
He's misunderstood and he just needs a friend
I said give me a light, it will be alright in the end
He's finished with his mission
Like to square it with god if he gets permission
He sold his sole to Bill Gates
And he don't feel alright, cos the money was shite
And it's all so sad
I danced with the devil, he told me a story
About all the love that he wished he could send
I said buy me a pint, it will be alright in the end
He granted me three wishes
Said I just need clean clothes and can you do the dishes
He don't get on with Judas
He's been to rehab, couldn't pay his bar tab
And it's all so sad
I danced with the devil, he told me a story
About all the love that he wished he could send
I said buy me a pint, it will be alright in the end

Stalkers' Day Off

I've been hanging around
Just in case you fall in love with me
I know you have doubts
I hear when you shout
Cos I understand you see
I was concerned when you said
You'd rather wake up dead
Than spend a day with me
I know that's not you
I know and it's true
They don't understand you like I do
I've been hanging around
Just in case you fall in love with me
I know you have doubts
I hear when you shout
Cos I understand you see
(Spoken: hi, it's me again... yay, I got on parole! yeah, umm.if you could just.er.pick
Up the phone, I'd like to talk to you, please!)
I've seen misery
And have a strange empathy
With the woman who kidnaps her lover
This love ain't a dream
I know it's obscene
The calls that I left for your mother
I've been hanging around
Just in case you fall in love with me
I know you have doubts
I hear when you shout
Cos I understand you see
(Spoken: I love you, too... everyday... perhaps someday we could meet... face to face this
Time...*laughs...
I'm sorry about that letter I sent you... the newspaper cuttings and stuff... and blood...
*Laughs*)
I've been hanging around
Just in case you fall in love with me
I know you have doubts
I hear you when you shout
Cos I understand you see
Just tell me that you love me..

I actually drove my car a long way today - so the CD I selected was Reality Killed The Video Star.

I thoroughly enjoyed it cool.gif from Morning Sun, Bodies, though to Deceptacon and Starstruck. Plus one of my all time favourites - Blasphemy. wub.gif

This album has a lot of little gems on it and it still sounded fresh ten years on. I have a lot of happy memories of it and that time when he came back after being away for three years. Times had moved on but despite that - he came back still as the number one British artist. It was pre Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith and Olly was just getting started. He still had his crown and despite the fact he personally was already looking forward to the TT reunion which he knew was planned for the following year, this solo album brought him back into the public eye. Allowed him to begin to re-build his confidence and find his pop star persona again.

And all over Britain, we wait for permission to form another queue. We stand in position, though somebody's missing, and that somebody's you.
But what can I do?

Posted by: Sydney11 Jul 16 2020, 05:35 AM

& that's when we began to see more & more of the lovely Ayda ( was it her first participation in one of his music video thinking.gif )

RKTVS is a super little album, some great songs on there , Bodies being one of my favourites & a great stadium song

Bodies

God gave me the sunshine
Then showed me my lifeline
I was told it was all mine
Then I got laid on the ley line
What a day, what a day
And your Jesus really died for me
Then Jesus really tried for me
UK and entropy
I feel like it's f***ing me
Wanna feed off the energy
Love living like a deity
What a day, one day
And your Jesus really died for me
I guess Jesus really tried for me
Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
And that's the way it's gonna be
All we've ever wanted is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection from my reflection
I want perfection
Praying for the rapture
'Cause it's stranger getting stranger
And everything's contagious
It's the modern middle ages
All day every day
And if Jesus really died for me
Then Jesus really tried for me
Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
And that's the way it's gonna be
All we've ever wanted is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection from my reflection
I want perfection
Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
Bodies in the bodhi tree
Bodies making chemistry
Bodies on my family
Bodies in the way of me
Bodies in the cemetery
And that's the way it's gonna be
All we've ever wanted is to look good naked
Hope that someone can take it
God save me rejection from my reflection
I want perfection
Jesus didn't die for you
What do you want? (I want perfection)
Jesus didn't die for you

I love RKTVS, the best he looked for a long time and a long time after. Great songs, Electric Proms. good times. I also liked his way as a 'star' in that time than a lot of what he did the last years. I wonder what kind of 'crown' he has these days. I don't see Olly as a huge star. He might be in the UK, but lost his fans over here he mainly had in NL and Germany. Ed Sheeran can do no wrong, but also is beyond his peak and Sam is special. Robbie: in some parts he is a legend. In some magazine they spoke about people fainting and the commentor said "Robbie Williams" is used to it and it was a medical report. If you use these comparisons it shows that they assume people understand. (I also don't think that so many faint with Ed). But I also see that aside of some songs he had been too much mainstream than to be accepted as legend yet. They said in Holland when Ringo turned 80: He only is knighted late and got never the acceptance Paul and John had...as he was more acting as a clown. I sometimes feel that this is Robbies fate.

I agree with you Elizabeth, all that clowning around does not help & people do not take him seriously but that is the way he is like it or not. I happen to think he is quite a shrewd business man & knows what he is doing & it works for him most times . I find his close association with LMA very interestiing , wonder what his input will be , will it be hands on

Posted by: Laura130262 Jul 16 2020, 11:08 PM

I thought the same about the LMA deal - it shows a new direction.

He undoubtedly is a smart man who can spot bullshit at a 100 paces. Also his constant search for new things to occupy that mind of his means that he is always moving forward at speed. His inability to take himself seriously does rub off on others I think. But that's his smoke screen isn't it.

Posted by: elisabeth1974 Jul 17 2020, 06:12 AM

Agree with you and I also think that he is no one to waste money nevertheless tries new things. And his mind is fast...I only don't think that the broad public who should buy the albums aside of the hardcore fans can follow him. You have a stamp. You saw it with TT taking risk the last years too: People do not want too much risk from 'their' popstars. The same is the case with Robbie. People (not the fans) want the Angels and Feel Robbie with a slight badboy touch and some sex (the reason being married costs him fans). I know very few stars if musician or actor who managed a turn around from the image which was imprinted in people's minds

I did not know that Vaughan Arnell directed the Take That video 'Back For Good' ohmy.gif

We Weren't Out To Shock People': Rock DJ Director Vaughan Arnell On Making Robbie Williams' Outrageous Video
It's been 20 years since the all-singing, all-dancing, all-stripping, all-vital-organ-eating video made its debut.

By the turn of the millennium, Robbie Williams had well and truly cemented his place as one of the brightest stars on the British music scene.

With his Take That days long behind him, Robbie entered the year 2000 having released two hit albums and scored two solo number one singles, the aptly-titled Millennium and She’s The One, not to mention his first Brit Award win as a solo act.

So when it came to his first output of the new millennium, the chart-topping singer started as he meant to go on, by shocking absolutely everyone.

Rock DJ served as the lead single from singer’s third album, Sing When You’re Winning, and quickly topped the UK charts, bagging him his third number one.

However, it’s the song’s outrageous music video that people probably remember best.

The horrifying/hilarious (delete as applicable) clip sees Robbie entering a roller disco, and quickly trying to bag the attention of the DJ. His dancing, posing and stripping fail him, and he only succeeds in wooing her by – of course – peeling off his skin and chucking his vital organs around (which are promptly eaten by the models circling him on their skates). By the end, all that remains is a dancing Robbie skeleton.

In honour of the clip’s 20th anniversary, HuffPost UK spoke to its director, Vaughan Arnell, for a bit of insight into the creation of a music video that’s still shocking people 20 years after its release.

I actually met Rob when he was still in Take That
“I directed the Back For Good video for Take That. We shot it in the rain, and they all had fur coats on, and Rob just really pounded it out. And then, obviously, there was the split, and I became a fan of his, I really liked him.

“And then we did Angels together, and Let Me Entertain You, which was fantastic, and after that I did the Millennium video too.”

His team sent me the original treatment for the Rock DJ video when I was on holiday

“It was one of the few videos I’ve done where I didn’t write the treatment. I think Rob was doing a Pepsi ad, and the guys doing the ad [came up with the idea]. So, Rob and the management came to me and said ‘Rob’s seen this idea about him taking his skin off, it was written by two French guys, would you be up for doing it?’. So I looked at it, and I thought it was really exciting.

I did make a couple of changes, though

“I think [the original treatment] was a little bit more French, they had Rob walking into a disco with a poodle or something, and the girls didn’t notice him so he started taking his clothes off, something like that. I thought it was nice, but I changed it to a roller-skating rink, with Rob coming up into the centre.

“There’s a film called Rollerball, where they used to fight going round on rollerskates, so I had rollerskates in my head because of that. I worked on the treatment when I was on holiday – I remember thinking I’d not be able to do the video, because I couldn’t get back in time, but they said they’d wait for me – and I literally got off the plane and went straight into all the prep on it.”

f you don’t already know the name Vaughan Arnell, then there’s no doubt that you know the work.

I’ve got a few things wrong, a few regrets. I did one video for Robbie [Williams] recently [Love My Life]. I did this a shoot on a beach. Anyway, Guy Chambers [producer] said to me, ‘did Robbie cry?’. I said, ‘no, why?’. Turns out it was a very emotional song for him and I had no idea, and I’d done this video on a beach; classic Robbie with girls and stuff. It's one of the only times I've misunderstood the meaning of a track. I phoned up the management and asked to reshoot the video.

I always thought that video was made in a hurry & did not capture the mood of the song, now we know why sleep.gif

Although conversely - it is his ability to change/evolve/move onto something different that has kept me a fan all these years.

Yep, Laura, but you are not a casual person who goes to a concert and listens to music. You are a 'fan' :-)

Posted by: Lundi Jul 18 2020, 07:46 PM

I think it is always difficult to keep the people who are no real fans by your side if you are quite some time in the business. I agree that these people might not want changes, that they prefer the same kind of songs and the same attitude of the popstar like they are used to and turn away when something changes too much. But at the same time I believe they would not have appreciated it either if he hadn't changed anything. At some point they would have said his songs are always the same and his attitude doesn't match his age anymore and becomes ridiculous and they would have turned away as well. I think there is really nothing a popstar can do about losing some people along the way. It will happen anyway. You just have to try to keep the hardcore fans and perhaps even gain some new fans which Robbie does. I always wonder how relatively much young fans are at his gigs. I believe nobody will be able to keep all his followers when he is over the peak. In fact being over the peak means having lost some of the not hardcore fans and this happens to everyone who is long enough in the business.

You are so right, Lundi. I somehow wait for a second coming of Robbie Williams. Like Tom Jones end nineties or Tine Turner mid eighties. He so deserves it as his musical inheritance is much better and huger than his critics will ever admit. But I still do not see that.

Posted by: Lundi Jul 22 2020, 11:40 AM

Music industry has changed so much that a second coming becomes much more difficult than in the 80s or 90s. There are so many artists now because they can get famous on their on through the internet and don't need a label anymore. That makes the competition so much stronger. At the same time the duration of popularity becomes much shorter. There is always a new singer who is more interesting than the old one - at least for a lot of people. When even artists from last year are uninteresting by now why should they bother with an artist from the last decade or actually the last two decades.

I don't believe that even the Beatles or Michael Jackson would have so much success today like they had in their times. I don't believe that this is possible anymore.

agree, well many young people do not even know who they are

Posted by: Sydney11 Jul 23 2020, 05:56 AM

Robbie is remembered for his live shows , hope he gets to do those again, that's where his bread & butter is so to speak. It's worrying , lots of outdoor gigs cancelled here for the summer where they were trying to introduce these drive-in gigs but they have not been allowed to go ahead . Fingers crossed Rob gets back on stage live someday , he needs that, we need that , he might not sell that many records anymore but he will always do well with his live gigs. TBH I think he was doing too many anyway, absence will do him no harm at all .

Knebworth was a blast!

Let us entertain you..

The record-breaking Knebworth concerts established Robbie as the biggest star in Europe at the monent, and maybe (soon?) the world...

· More than 100 major rock acts, including Queen, Led Zeppelin and the Rolling Stones, have played at Knebworth Park since it became a music venue in 1974.

· The first concert that took place in the grounds of stately home Knebworth House, Hertfordshire, featured The Allman Brothers, Van Morrison and The Doobie Brothers.

· Knebworth House is home to Lord and Lady Cobbold, who were first persuaded to lease the park after being approached by festival promoter Freddy Bannister in 1974.

· Pink Floyd performed for 100,000 fans at the outdoor venue the following year, supported by The Steve Miller Band, Captain Beefheart, Roy Harper and Linda Lewis.

· The Rolling Stones attracted huge crowds at Knebworth in 1976, while Led Zeppelin played their last ever two concerts there in 1979.

· In 1986 Queen performed their last gig at Knebworth in front of a 120,000-strong crowd, supported by Status Quo and Big Country.

· A four-year gap followed until 1990 when Knebworth returned with a star-studded charity event with acts including Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, Status Quo and Elton John.

· In 1996 Oasis sold out their two shows at Knebworth in just nine hours.

· ...But Robbie Williams beat Oasis' record this year, selling all tickets for his initial two dates at Knebworth in seven hours, and added a third date due to the overwhelming demand.

· In August 2001 the traditional rock venue become a Mecca for dance music fans for one night when super club Ministry Of Sound launched a major event headlined by funk act Jamiroquai.

As Robbie Williams descended the stage hanging by a wire (like the cover of Escapology) dressed in a black shirt and white tie, the hundreds and thousands of fans went wild on the first night of the three nights of concerts and he opened with ‘Let Me Entertain You’.

"Good evening. My name is Robbie Williams. This is my band and for the next two hours your ass is mine," he informed the fans.

All day bash
The performance started at 3 but the gates opened at 12 because of the rush of fans. Amongst the supporting acts were Kelly Osbourne, Ash, The Darkness and Moby.

The line-up of songs included ‘She's The One’, ‘Rock DJ’ and ‘Feel’, plus tracks from his latest album Escapology, and a great finale with the Angels.

Robbie stripped of his shirt (phwar!) and sang the song ‘We Will Rock You’ by Queen (who also performed at Knebworth in 1986).

Though he's already halfway through a 15-date European tour, The Robster looked relaxed from the outset, relishing the opportunity to play up to a home crowd. Sometimes he looked a bit tired to me, but, well, he's allowed on such a huge occasion.

What i thought was really great was that the excitment never dropped right through the whole two hours. I dunno, but he doesn't really seem to have to try - everything just works for him, doesn't it, and the audience can just go with it!

Er, what was that about the drugs?
The Channel Four broadcast showed him acting up with a pretty wierd audience participation thing about drugs and alcohol (did you understand that?), but also being really soft-hearted with a young couple standing just outside the barrier.

The new material stood up well alongside more established tracks. Me and My Monkey was the real show-stopper, while on the first night Jan, robbie's mum, turned up.
Mr Bojangles worked a lot better than I thought it would too.

The dancers were however totally abysmal - making that part of the show seem like some dodgy musical. Robbie, you don't need them!

Take that, Take That
He dedicated the song No Regrets to the guys of Take That and ended the gig with a medley of Take That songs ending with the classic ‘Back For Good’.

It was an absolutely brilliant performance; those who bought the tickets (and made it to the concert) got their money's worth and those who saw it on Channel 4 will be green or dead with envy...

... and those who were stuck in the traffic jam and heard about the concert from their mates will have lost all faith in God and will also be wanted for murder! laugh.gif

Festival Flashback: Robbie Williams, Knebworth Festival 2003

For some of you, it might be difficult to comprehend that Robbie Williams was quite literally the biggest pop star in the UK and parts of Europe. With a hallmark homecoming performance at Barclaycard presents British Summer Time Hyde Park as well as an upcoming headline slot at Romania's gargantuan Untold Festival, it still proves he has the credentials, and extensive back catalogue, to warrant such postures.

Arguably his finest hour, however, was joining an illustrious legion of contemporary British legends like Led Zeppelin, Oasis, The Rolling Stones, Queen, and Pink Floyd in headlining Knebworth Festival, back in 2003. The intermittently recurring festival, held in the regal grounds of Knebworth House, has regularly welcomed in excess of 125,000 on each occasion. Well, Williams at the height of his post-Millenium popularity sold out three consecutive dates, performing for a total of 375,000 across the duration. Mind-boggling figures.

The adoring masses rose to fever-pitch throughout the day as a mish-mash of support artists in Moby, The Darkness, and Kelly Osbourne took the stage before the crowning jewel of British pop music entered the fray; curtains branded with his initials withdrew to reveal William suspended upside down, arms stretched out wide in a faux-crucifixion position to begin proceedings. Cue pandemonium.

As the iconic opening piano chords of 'Let Me Entertain You' rang out, Robbie with his well-loved cheeky bravado burst onto the stage and after a couple of anthemic choruses announced himself: "My name is Robbie Williams. This is my band. And for the next two hours, your ass is mine." 125,000 asses to be precise were bombarded with a hit-laden set featuring what are now stone-cold classics, such as 'Come Undone', 'She's The One', 'Rock DJ', the list goes on.

It's strange to comprehend that on the cusp of the 21st century, Williams was consistently in the charts with back-to-back bangers, proving his mettle as a contemporary pop icon. The sheer demand from his faithful UK fanbase to see him at the peak of his powers ensured that his Knebworth performance was groundbreaking, era-defining, and truly legendary. Once his frenetic two-hour set came to an end, the prodigal son returned with 'Angels' as the encore. What else?

Traffic review after Robbie gig chaos

Police were reviewing their handling of the Robbie Williams gigs after thousands of fans got caught in traffic jams and missed last night's show.
Many had to make do with listening to muffled music from the hard shoulder while others who saw the show spent more than five hours trying to get out of the car park. ohmy.gif

Organisers are planning a shake-up in strategy to avoid similar scenes at tonight's performance in Knebworth Park.

"Certainly there is a plan that is being reviewed and revised in co-operation with the traffic management consultants," a Hertfordshire Police spokesman said.

"Overall we are responsible - that was said at the briefing."

The spokesman said the "sheer volume of traffic" descending on the venue caused chaos at the opening night of Robbie's three-night show.

"It was the sheer volume of people trying to get in," he said.

"There were some pinch points where people could not get into the car park quickly enough and there was a question of access from the roads."

The spokesman said tailbacks were particularly bad on the A1M southbound, north of Stevenage where the three-lane motorway was brought to a standstill.

Trouble arose when people ignored the signs restricting concert-goers to the inside lane, stayed in the middle and fast lane and then could not cut in at the concert exit junction.

I am still watching Knebworth. I became a Robbie fan when I saw the Leeds concert on TV, Then Berlin (after lees despite it was before Leeds). An then I bought the Knebworth DVD and watched it with my mum and we were both like, 'what is that'?

What is feel sorry about - and I cannot help - that for many people who know Robbie Williams outside of his fan circle think of him not even as a minstream popstar these days but forgot the great hits and reduce him to Angels and karaoke. Many fans have left, despite his concerts still have a reputation. And the younger people do not even know him. I have the feeling that his 'competition' at that time, Justin Timberlake has maintained his fame far more than Rob. The British boybands do not sell in Europe (TT last tours without Robbie did sell in few countries) and the solo stars like Ronan keating is known best from his Notting Hill hit but they do not score. Neither does Rob who though still feels stadiums fortunately. We all know that fame never stays permanent. But for me his fall from Grace from such a high top through the last years was huge. And I feel sad about that.

Would he want the fame at that same level Elisabeth especially the fact that he now has a family, were the ones that left looking for something more that they were never going to get laugh.gif

I am not sad at all about it, I would be very sad if he retired as I would really miss his songwriting & the lovely melodies he creates, you can really connect with his songs & what they mean . I think he does pretty well after this length of time being in the business . Most of the folks on BJ are way younger that me ( which would not be difficult tongue.gif ) but in the recent competition they had between the different music forums Robbie did pretty well overall on the songs that we selected, even Rudebox got us through a round , we were pretty thrilled about the reaction , I was not at all expecting that & thought we would be gone in the first round .

I do sometimes wish that Robbie would take longer breaks , I think it would benefit him greatly ( sometimes familiarity breeds contempt & people get bored ) but I guess if he is getting sponsorship from companies then he has not choice but so 'something'. In recent years I did like the remixes he did at the smaller gigs, gave the songs a fresh feel to them , really enjoyed the variation.

I can vouch for this. It happened to us. Not five hours - but probably three. I remember everyone being very good natured about it though.

I also know people who then went back the next morning and queued again. I remember wishing it were me. Once wasn't enough. happy.gif

I forgot you were actually there Laura, who did you go with if you do not mind me asking , . Did you get stuck in the traffic or did you get to the gig on time, where were you situated at the gig itself , it just looked amazing . I watched it in the local pub, did not know it was even on, I had never heard of Robbie Williams , the barman turned on the TV & this amazing guy appeared on stage , I could not believe it, That gig in particular will always stick in my mind, I think it was one of his best ever , it has everything you would want in a performance & everyone was up for it , can you imagine the adrenaline rush you would get from that as a performer , hard to beat that

It is one of the gigs that you do not get tired of watching Elisabeth, the DVD has a real energy to , it's one of my all time favourites

Did you know - On the final night of Williams's 2003 Knebworth House concerts, 125,000 ticketholders sang Strong to set the world record for Most Karaoke Participants. Williams and his audience held the record until 2009, when 160,000 people sang Friends in Low Places by Garth Brooks whilst in attendance at the 2009 NASCAR Sharpie 500 race.

"Strong" was written by Williams while he was in a hotel in Cologne. It was inspired by some of his most hardcore fans, who, Williams confessed, "scared the living daylights out of [him]". laugh.gif

This huge concert in Knebworth is definitely Robbie Williams' best. All of his best songs are included in this DVD, for example Feel and Angels. Williams performances another tracks as well, which ones are not included in any of his CDs, like We Will Rock You from Queen. He gives his best, the entire show is gorgeous, and the audience's morale is through the full concert at maximum. The mood doesn't decrease after the sunset, when the lights are turned off, then comes Robbie's best songs, like Angel. I have been once in his tour personally in Budapest, it was brilliant, but this concert is much bigger. Excellent concert DVD, Williams at his best, a must see, not only for fans.

The most captivating man alive!
mwilliams-2518 August 2005
Words cannot even express how I feel when watching the Live at Knebworth Show. The fact that this man can make 175 thousand people bounce in unison to his music is astounding! I wish so much that I could have been there in person. It would have been the best time of my entire life! However, when I watch the DVD, it almost feels like I was there. Robbie is so captivating with his enthusiasm and animation. The band plays an amazing show with such precision and energy. I was a die hard fan of Robbie's music before, but now not a day goes by where I don't listen to him. This is by far one of the best shows in music history!!!

Best live concert DVD ever
darinf-18 July 2005
I wasn't the biggest Robbie Williams fan primarily because I never heard of him...i live in USA where RW is pretty much unknown. But after hearing he put on a fantastic show from some European girl I met, I figured why not check out a DVD of him live (since it seems he doesn't play live in the states). I was blown away!!! In the DVD RW says "i'm a born entertainer", and he couldn't be more self aware. Not only are the songs fabulously written, performed, and choreographed, but somehow the director was able to capture emotion and depth throughout, making you feel like you were right there in the front row rocking and bouncing with a bunch of Brits. Robbie is a star...and this DVD made this skeptic tell everyone he knows that robbie williams is hands down the best performer in the world right now. Check it out if you're into great music and fabulous musicians... Believe it or not, its well worth the $42 bucks I paid thru amazon.com.

Oh what a night!

In reply to bob the moo. We were there. Right at the back. From the opening notes of 'Let me Entertain You' to the fading tones of 'Angels', Robbie Williams grabs an audience like no one we have ever seen before or since and we still feel privileged that we experienced one of the greatest days pop has ever seen. The DVD conveys all of this wonderfully and all this time later, still makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end. The extras are a bit of fun and let the audience in on some of the backstage nerves plus allow Take That fans to witness the ongoing affection between Robbie and Mark. If you only ever buy one Robbie Williams DVD, make it this one.

Amazing

I am also from the USA, where ironically very few people have even heard of Robbie Williams, but I'm a HUGE fan, and had to order this DVD. It's was very worth it... RW has a ridiculous amount of stage presence. This DVD effectively captures that, and the (vast) audience's energy in such a way that the DVD live performance continually looks very professional and successfully captures the highlights from this concert. The extras are pretty cool, and this is one of the best concert DVD's I've ever seen, definitely one of my favorites. The set list is great; the choreography/RW's concert antics make this footage superb. I wish he came to the US more often.

Unlike the person before me, I found this DVD on amazon for about $22, but if I had seen it before, I'd probably have paid as much as $50 for it. This concert is interactive and visually pleasing, not to mention awesome because of RW's music. Born entertainer, indeed.

Before I saw the concert Robbie Williams was nothing to me. Me and my three friends looked at the concert and it was WONDERFUL! I was totally in love. He was so sweet, he danced really good and I loved his singing (I still love this thing). He really entertained the public. I think it was amazing that he asked a girl up to the scene and they KISSED each other. And when he said WOOW, with a five-years-old expression. But the thing who makes me cry were when I cried. I really did impression at me. When I hear the live variation from the concert I get shivers and at Saturday me and me three friends are going to look at the DVD. oh, I LOVE Robbie Willimas

I really loved this concert.Knebworth is one of the two Robbie Williams DVDs I own because I am a huge Robbie fan.I found out about this DVD cos my mother had it in the DVD cabinet and I didn't even notice it until I became a Robbie Williams fan.

It had to be the best concert he has done in his career. There were hardly any songs that I disliked except for Me and My Monkey which went on for a bit too long but other than that I loved all the songs that he performed at Knebworth. These are all very well written. The stage, musicianship were both very professional. It also had some very funny moments. It has to be one of the best shows in music history. If you want a RW DVD get this one!

Fans of Williams will lap it up but those that aren't big fans might be put off by the way that his personality comes through in the show, and not necessarily in a good way
bob the moo4 January 2007
Filmed back in August 2003, this concert saw over 150 thousand people come to Knebworth to see former Take That member Robbie Williams perform a set of his songs as well as some of his favourites from other artists. I'm not a real fan of Robbie Williams and I have never been to a concert this big but I decided to give this film a try anyway. I'm not sure how much of an experience this concert would have been for those not in the first quarter mile of the stage but on television it works a lot better as it gives more intimacy with the performance.

Whether this is a good thing or not depends on your view of Williams. He does most of his big hits and he belts them out really well and if you, like the crowd of mainly screaming women, love this then this is the concert for you. Personally I thought that the whole show was moulded around Williams' personality and that this was not always a good thing. He does come across very smug at times and perhaps all a bit too pleased with himself and how things have worked out. Fans will likely embrace this as part of him being a cheeky chappy but it is a fine line between that and arrogance and Williams doesn't always manage to stay on the right side of it. Likewise his womanising side sees his ogling his dancers, having two of them pretend to kiss and fondling a member of the audience during a song. It is part of his "fun" I guess but again it grated with me because it seemed to be more about his brand of hedonism than it was about giving the audience a show.

This can also be seen in the moments when he talks to the audience, either as a group of as individuals. A lot of what he says comes over as insincere but it does the job for the crowd; I didn't like the way he bigs up himself a lot as well – attacking the tabloids and telling the audience how well he is doing, but again if you are a fan of his then I guess you won't see it this way. The dancers look great but I was disappointed with how little we get to see of the many people that share the stage with Williams – only bass player Yolande Charles gets time on camera, which may be because of her looks. In terms of the show itself, director Hamilton has done a great job of grabbing lots of great shots to give the viewer a feel for the crowd while also catching the performance up close. Occasionally it is edited together a bit too frantically but generally this helps inject energy into the film.

Overall then a big concert film that is professionally made and well captured by the director. Fans of Williams will lap it up but those that aren't big fans might be put off by the way that his personality comes through in the show, and not necessarily in a good way.

It's interesting reading those reviews. While lots of them are really good - I remember one - think it was the telegraph that was quite scathing at the time. So although Knebworth is a bit of history for Robbie fans - some newspapers were less than complimentary at the time.
I think I kept one review with my programme - I must dig it out - it was from the Daily Mail. They focussed more on the traffic queues than the gig itself.

Yes. So much to say about this song.

It shows him at his best - telling a story, bringing that story to life to 125,000 people.

That's his skill.

He did it again at the TTC tour wasn't it? It was just as brilliant then.

Some reviews of the song in general

Robbie Williams Robbie Williams
Me & My Monkey
(Chrysalis)

This would have to be one of the most deepest songs that paints a picture into the life of Robbie Williams on cocaine.
Cocaine was Robbie's only friend for a long time. Robbie being stuck inside his addiction, would play with his heart strings when it came to Family and friends. He knew that his addiction was eating away at his closest family and friends, his guilt becoming unbearable. He carried alot of guilt about the lifestyle on drugs that had lead him down the destuctive path of his own personal demise. He knew this, But the addiction always got the better of him.

The song is an emotional struggle between Robbie and the monkey. He knew what was the right thing to do, But found it hard to pull himsself out.
The monkey was Robbie on the cocaine, And Robbie was the inhibitted guilt ridden Robbie, He finally set the captive free (himself) by killing off his addiction. (the monkey) now all he needs to do is find the love that he has always desired.

Katrina
****************

I must say a bit weird at first, but it grew on me.

Me and My Monkey is really deeper than the average listener would expect. If they didn’t know about our Robbie’s previous cocaine problems, they wouldn’t understand the song at all.

As I see it, Robbie here sings about his “trips” and the world he was living in, packing a gun, on a short fuse…..etc.

On the Knebworth concert on the big screen there were images of a monkey, which changed from time to time with a image of Robbie himself doing bizzare movements like something was bugging him..like an illusion.

We could say Robbie = the Monkey.

People chased him in the song: the Mexican, which could possibly have been his dealer. He didn’t owe him money, cause Robbie almost had a million pounds at that stage.

I think, except for the weight gain, Robbie himself, and Sir Elton, realised what he was doing to himself.

About me and my monkey.....first of all i think its the best song ive heard in all times....its a great song, with cool lyrics.

Rob has an extraordinary voice with cool variations and i love the trumpets.

About its lyrics...very original i think, and very simple. It's the story of a guy who goes to Las Vegas with his monkey...i think the monkey has done something wrong in his past and now he will pay for it....they enter a world of gambling, prostitution and guns...really dunno how it ends this story.

Ithink maybe the man and his monkey are the same person...the monkey is his past...is it or not?

It's cool not to know the answer...congrats Rob! It's a great song.

This is reminding me - there was the Channel 4 broadcast of the gig that was on a half hour delay I think.

When the gig had finished, everyone had to stay put and allow the coaches out first. On the big screen they put on the broadcast for everyone to watch. It was the first time I had seen the size of the crowd. I couldn't believe there were so many people behind us. I remember it blew me away. ohmy.gif

I think it was 2002 they fell out just before the EMI deal.

When you think Guy missed out on so much - Knebworth, the Abbey Road sessions, Live 8 in 2005. All the massive Robbie moments he wasn't there. I feel quite sad about that. Ten years or so when Robbie did it all without him.

& a World Tor where he sold 1.6 ml tickets in one day ...then went off with Stephen Duffy, the most unlikely of collaborations nut one that worked really well except that the tour nearly killed Robbie , but then he might never have met the lovely Ayda. Sometimes things happen for a reason wink.gif

HOT FUDGE

Yeah!

Queen Bitch, eat the rich
I'm on the second course today.
I'm not the first
And I won't be the worst
You done most of LA.
Can't find a virgin
I can get you a surgeon
24 hours a day.
Wasn't Jean Genie a Rolling Stones hit?
I'm about to be blown away.

Come on, sing it

Take me to the place where the sunshine flows
Oh my sunset rodeo.

Hot fudge
Here comes the judge
There's a green card and a way
The holy ghost
And the whole east coast
Are moving to LA
And we've been
Dreaming of this feeling
Since 1988
Mother, things have got to change
I'm moving to LA.

Take the piss
I was English
God bless you Uncle Sam.
You got a cool gene pool
And I went to school
And God knows I love to tan.
Making cents and dead presidents
Before I could count to ten.
With the nation behind me
Can't stop the limey
She's on her back again.

Come on, sing it

Take me to the place where the sunshine flows
Oh my sunset rodeo.

Hot fudge
Here comes the judge
There's a green card and a way
The holy ghost
And the whole east coast
Are moving to LA
'Cause we've been
Dreaming of this feeling
Since 1988
Mother, things have got to change
I'm moving to LA, LA, LA

Take me to the place where the sunshine flows
Oh my sunset rodeo.

Hot fudge
Here comes the judge
There's a green card and a way
The holy ghost
And the whole east coast
Are moving to LA
'Cause we've been
Dreaming of this feeling
Since 1988
Mother, things have got to change
I'm moving to

Keep a-moving keep a-moving, keep a-moving to LA
Mo, mo, mo, mo

Hot Fudge didn't make it for the American release

Escapology album
As the contract stated, EMI attempted to break Williams in the American market; to this end the label asked him to tweak Escapology to suit the market. The American release shuffled the song order, removed "Song 3", "Hot Fudge", "Cursed" and one hidden track, added "Get a Little High" and "One Fine Day", and made "How Peculiar (Reprise)" a main album track instead of a hidden track. Williams promoted the album on shows such as Good Morning America, Last Call with Carson Daly and The Tonight Show.

So - the Sunday night was the final night for Robbie and I remember the gig was broadcast live on Radio One was it? I listened.

for a lot of people it's known because it's the night Mark Owen joined Robbie on stage for a version of BFG. The first time they had been on stage together since Robbie left TT in 1995.
