BuzzJack Music Forum _ Little Mix _ Woman Like Me: One Year On

Posted by: Defaze Oct 31 2019, 09:06 PM

So October 12th marked the one-year anniversary for 'Woman Like Me'. Where does everyone stand in regards to this perpetually-underrated bop now? Do you think it contributed to the underperformance of LM5? Do you reckon something else from the album should've been released as the lead?

(I realise this is incredibly late oooops, but I was in Brazil and had no internet for weeks).

For me, this has actually grown on me massively since its release (especially the Banx & Ranx remix). The disdain towards it relative to their other leads is a bit overblown imo. Leigh's verse, the pre-chorus and the instrumental itself are all amazing, but the chorus does admittedly feel a little half-baked.

Its chart performance is also massively underplayed for some reason. I get that the GD era was huuuge, but it was always going to be hard to replicate that level of success, and 'Only You' kinda forewarned us that the demand for the new era wasn't there as much as we anticipated. Tbh, I'm still incredibly impressed that it managed to reach #1 on Spotify (and have a rather lengthy stay there at that). I think anything approaching its success for their next lead would be a major accomplishment.

It's also by far and way their best video (BRITs winner!!), so that helps.

I love the song, I think it did reasonable well in the charts

It’s the worst single they’ve ever put out in my opinion

This is a bop. It always was. This song wasn't to blame for the album underperforming; especially when there was so much behind-the-scenes politics and the girls didn't really try to push ANYTHING else from the album in a major way.

LM5 deserved so much more - one of their best albums, if not their best!

It’s definitely one of their worst!

Agree with cqm & Jordan 100%

Still not that good.

This has a special place in my heart as I clung to the likes of 'Woman Like Me', BROCKHAMPTON's album 'iridescence' and Bastille & Marshmello's 'Happier' during my really early days of full-time work last year, so it'll always remind me of that new chapter. I quite like the actual song too, minus Nicki's part going on forever kink.gif

'Bounce Back' and 'Little Me' are right there.

Agreed re WLM not necessarily being responsible for the album's underperformance, although I do think 'Wasabi' would've marked more of a 'statement' return. WLM is too polarising and a little derivative. If even 'Move' managed to be big a hit off the back of the DNA era, then 'Wasabi' could've really smashed imo.

Absolute TRASH. Shows they were abandoned by producers and tried to go rnb LOL. Only Bounce Flop is worse! Well that and Watsappi, which is the WORST RANKEST example of a manufactured pop group failing at rap.

Honestly don't get how it was made a single over the rest of the album, even a deluxe track would have been better. Saying that... it is still "Okay".

I, personally understand why it was chosen as the lead single. As much as I love some other tracks over it, I couldn't see them working as lead singles quite as well as this one did. Wasabi would have been even more polarizing I think. Strip was far too subtle and TAU is a bit too safe/generic to "come back with a bang", imo.

The singles should have been WLM > Strip (should have coasted on the P***s controversy) > The Cure (first performed on Red Nose Day) and then the Summer TiK ToK viral hit Wasabi (ideally Forget You Not for Summer but that was a deluxe track)...

I love this as a song. It's ridiculously catchy! The video is their best. And it gave us THAT Brits performance!!

Great video but the song is bloody awful sick2.gif

Once LM5 was released, it became clear 'Woman Like Me' was the correct lead single choice. LM5 simply wasn't loaded with bangers like 'Glory Days' and SYCO made the correct call.

The Era underperformed because everything practically ended with 'Woman Like Me'.

The girls and their A&R really need to work harder on the singles for the next album.

I like Woman Like Me, but it is not in the category of their strong singles.
LM5, missed having the bangers to keep the album selling and it is disappointing the big fall in sales, but, the record label changeover did not help.
The next album, is now what is very important and they need to make the correct choices to try and regain what they lost with the LM5 era.

I'd still listen to this a hundred times over 'Shout Out to My Ex' once, in all honesty.
