BuzzJack Music Forum _ News and Politics _ Jo Cox MP dead after shooting attack

Posted by: Silas Jun 16 2016, 05:20 PM

Clarkson has come out as Pro-EU. I almost died of shock at that and then my heart actually broke at the news about Jo Cox. As a mark of respect both sides have agreed to suspend campaigning.

I'm so upset with Jo Cox's death. I really am losing the will with the world we live in atm. RIP

Terrible tragedy. Reports are unconfirmed, but apparently it's linked to Britain First.

utterly shocked and upset by the death sad.gif finding the reports really difficult to read rn. i'm really glad they've suspended the campaign

Gosh, what an absolutely awful past few days it's been :/ Horrible news about Jo Cox, aged 41 and a mother of two as well, no words...

Posted by: Jade Jun 16 2016, 05:54 PM

Saw this on BBC news and my heart dropped. So incredibly upsetting.

Posted by: Bré Jun 16 2016, 05:55 PM

Beyond shocking to hear of something like this happening in this country :/ sad.gif

Have split this topic off from the EU referendum thread.

Posted by: HarryEzra Jun 16 2016, 06:11 PM

Shocking news especially as we don't get shooting attacks in UK often sad.gif RIP poor woman and her family

Posted by: Mack Jun 16 2016, 06:33 PM

The EU Referendum doesn't matter now that an innocent MP who had a bright future ahead of her has died in the most shocking way. Absolutely shocking to hear. Completely shocked.

Posted by: burbe Jun 16 2016, 07:00 PM

Such shocking news! Really unbelievable! RIP sad.gif

Posted by: SevenSeize Jun 16 2016, 07:10 PM

R.I.P. Jo sad.gif ridiculous and very dejecting so soon after the Orlando shootings as well

Posted by: popchartfreak Jun 16 2016, 07:11 PM

Terrible news. Oxfam campaigner murdered by a disturbed or evil man. These people never go for the spreaders of hate because they ARE spreaders of hate.

I hope those guilty of whopping lies and hyperbole on both sides feel ashamed of themselves. This whole campaign has been an outrageous mess and makes british politics look disgusting. I am of course assuming it is related, and not just a personal gudge. Either way they should all take it as a warning that ramping up fervour risks deadly consequences and will now be in very bad taste.

In her short time at Westminster, she had clearly had a big impact on MPs from all parties. Some newly elected MPs take their time to make friends with political opponents, but she seems to have done so from the very start. Here is a moving tribute from former Tory minister Andrew Mitchell.

The words of her husband are very powerful

QUOTE
Today is the beginning of a new chapter in our lives. More difficult, more painful, less joyful, less full of love.

I and Jo's friends and family are going to work every moment of our lives to love and nurture our kids and to fight against the hate that killed Jo.

Jo believed in a better world and she fought for it everyday of her life with an energy, and a zest for life that would exhaust most people.

She would have wanted two things above all else to happen now, one that our precious children are bathed in love and two, that we all unite to fight against the hatred that killed her.

I'm feeling so awful about this. More tragedy. Nobody ever deserves this, but cliche as it sounds, it doesn't sound like there was a nicer person for it to have happened to. I keep thinking about the moments when she was attacked from the descriptions, and it's making me so uneasy. Those poor kids and the poor husband. So unfair.

Posted by: Colm Jun 16 2016, 10:35 PM

2016 is getting worse. I had never heard of Jo before today but reading about her has really saddened me. I dont know how to express how sad I find this.

Posted by: Taylor Jago Jun 17 2016, 05:38 AM

Absolutely shocking. It's only right the campaign should be suspended as a mark of respect.

Posted by: vidcapper Jun 18 2016, 02:32 PM

The attack is horrifyingly similar to on that happened in Cheltenham 15 years ago.

This is horrifying, to think that something like this can happen in our country, right under our noses, when a wonderful woman who's done so much for so many people was just doing her job sad.gif Another death bred out of hate and anger.

Posted by: dandy* Jun 18 2016, 02:45 PM

I'm still on holiday and have only just heard that this has happened. I'm absolutely horrified that such a killing could happen in the UK in this day and age, this feels like such a huge step backwards for our society and it's attitude towards 'Britishness'. How can anyone, mentally ill or not, justify killing a UK MP as a method of protecting our country - I can't remember the last time I was so utterly appalled at the mentality of some people in our country, it makes me so unbelievably sad and angry that this has happened.

The horrendous campaign focus on scaremongering has a lot to answer for here and the press and campaign managers should be ashamed of themselves for targeting people's fears as a campaign rather than presenting clear and informed facts.

RIP Jo Cox. I sincerely hope that your passing triggers our country to take a long hard look at itself and strive to regain the values and principles that always made being British something to be proud of.

Without wishing to sound completely OTT, the next time I'm asked where I'm from I will feel a bit ashamed to say that I'm British, something I've never felt before - the image we're giving to the rest of the Europe (and indeed the world) is not a positive one.

As I live in France, a friend once asked me: "Why do the British want to leave the EU? What is it going to bring them?" The emphasis is on "the British". People think all Brits are stupid enough to believe the UK is better off isolated from the rest of the world.

Killed by a terrorist.

Disgusting.

It is shameful and shocking and those stoking these flames should be ashamed.

Fully agreed with this - it is not just this campaign that has had dangerous rhetoric however, it is the nationals like the Daily Mail, Express and The Sun - the gutter press that continues to pedal this hate-inciting propaganda as well as our failure (of both government and the people) to build a more inclusive and cohesive society. I felt desperately sad when the news broke on Thursday afternoon and even sadder when I read about Jo Cox, the MP who worked so hard to give a voice to those who most needed it to be heard, and then when the beautifully written statement from her only just bereaved husband was released- it was just too much.

It is too early to give an opinion on the motivation for the attack, though it is the first to not be associated with Irish terrorism since Spencer Perceval in 1812 (the only assassination of a British Prime Minister)

Somewhere along the line we have taken a wrong turn, lets hope that this is now a huge wake-up call and it is never repeated.

Very similar to what vidcapper was saying about Cheltenham back in 2000.
This has obviously shocked the whole world.

I would say that if the final result ends up showing a majority or even a number close to the majority of British people wanting to leave the EU, using "the British" here is entirely acceptable. The people who believe the UK is better off without its European neighbours are not just a bunch of randoms, they are millions of people. It is society-wide.

R.I.P Jo sad.gif

It feels like we're living in an apocalyptic world at the moment.

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 20 2016, 11:02 PM

I saw the parliamentary tributes to Jo Cox this afternoon. It was a very moving and desperately sad occasion with several MPs unable to hold back the tears as they spoke. I'm sure there will be a number of good pieces in tomorrow's papers, but here's one from the Telegraph as a start.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016/06/20/tears-flowers-love-and-anger-mps-pay-tribute-to-jo-cox-in-front/

Posted by: Suedehead2 Jun 21 2016, 02:23 PM

I read the Independent's report on yesterday's tributes (published in the i) on the bus this morning and could feel tears welling up, particularly when I got to the last paragraph describing MPs leaving the chamber.

QUOTE
High in the far corner, two small pairs of hands flashed against the railing. They were waving, and there on the floor of the house was Stephen Kinnock waving back.

The two small pairs of hands belonged to Jo Cox's children sad.gif

A plane with the banner Vote Leave, Take Control flew over the memorial service on what would have been Jo Cox's 42nd birthday, today, multiple times. Disgusting doesn't even begin to describe it.

In better news, should the results be Remain, Ryanair will be having its biggest seat sale, aka discounted seats for flights.

Better not look up the vile facebook page of the organisation quoted by the murderer. The plane is tame in comparison to what that says. Truly evil people.

If leave win i would be tempted not return to the uk on saturday - on hols in eu - if i didnt have to look after my parents...

Remain had better win I wants me a holiday!!

If they are the sort of "British values" the Leave side claim to be defending, I for one want nothing to do with them.
