I've talked about this film in the anime thread, but given that it's currently in cinemas in the UK, I thought I'd give it its own thread in the hope that some of you decide to check it out.

The basic story is about a girl who lives in rural Japan and yearns to live in the city, and a high school boy who lives in Tokyo, who discover that they switch places every day, although without giving anything away, there's much more to the story than that. It's a wonderfully, poignant film, which is really emotional, and has a few funny moments as well. It's broken box office records in Japan, staying at #1 in the box office for 2 months and is now in the top 5 highest grossing films of all time there, and it also broke records for the biggest one day gross for an anime film when it was released here last Thursday. If you have the opportunity to see it in the cinema over the next few weeks, then please do so, you won't regret it. I haven't felt so strongly about a film in a long time.

I planned to reply to this topic when I finally managed to see it, as I missed it in the cinemas and wanted to wait for the DVD release to finally get delivered to me, so I saw this while I'm recovering from being rather sick.

Thank God it lived up to all of the hype because this was outstanding and a film that really deserves to be known as a classic for all film fans to see, whether they like anime or not. I'd even go so far as to say that this should join Spirited Away or Grave Of The Fireflies as a great introductory anime film, not least because it'll show them a film that isn't Ghibli. A couple of early scenes of body-swapping teenagers being slightly perverted on finding out they've switched into the opposite gender (an entirely natural reaction), it's very wholesome and emotional. The animation is some of the most beautiful I've seen in anime or any animation at all, the landscapes are incredible, and it's all told with a really compelling story as well.

Perfect twist that blew me out of left-field, foreshadowed ever so nicely what with the comet backdrops over the start of the film and really changed the story from something kind of fun and forgettable into a real heartbreaking beautiful drama
