12th January 2020

It's a first week at one for Avicii - ever! That gives him a unique chart record, the first posthumous chart-topper with current material by an act who has never topped my chart previously. He's been as high as 2, but never managed that extra spot up. Far too many acts have hit my top spot posthumously before with current material, but none for the first time - although Mama Cass in 1974 was already topping my chart when she died, and she would in any case have had chart-toppers with The Mamas & The Papas had I been charting when they were active. Fades Away, like most of his last album, is so sad and full of cries for help,

The Weeknd gets his 6th top 3 as main artist, but he's yet to top in that respect, but has as guest on Ariana Grande's Love Me Harder, and Pet Shop Boys add another 2 top 10's with latest single Monkey Business, and last B side Decide. Kim Wilde also gets an 8-year-late top 10 with Hope. There's a lot of songs with important messages in my charts right now, which, given the state of the world, is at it should be. Sting gets his highest chart credit in 20 years, up to 16, Blossoms are the highest entry, and top all previous singles bar one in one fell swoop, in at 21.

Big climbs for Friendly Fires, Kim Wilde and Julie Bergan, all into the top 40, and The Fizz get a quick follow-up to their revamped xmas song, in at 38, given Cheryl, Jay and Mike a span of 39 years since Eurovision debut Making Your Mind Up, with added Bucks. Stormzy gets a second top 40, Ella Henderson gets a second simultaneous climber inside the 40 (joining Pet Shop Boys and Kim Wilde), while Celeste gets a 2nd chart entry - that's not Strange at all! - Sia does another movie theme (Dr. Doolittle), Kodaline are back again, Harry Styles charts a 4th track off his album, and Louise gets her 2nd simultaneous a bit Hurt.

So, time for some oldies. New songs, that is, by veterans: at 68, Billy Ocean gets his first new entry for 2 years, and an increased span of 44 years of hits solo, or 46 years including Scorched Earth who debuted the same month as Sparks (now number 2). Bob Geldof hasn't charted in 26 years - and still hasn't. Except that he has returned, as lead singer and mainman of The Boomtown Rats, who quietly sneak in with Trash Glam Baby at 75: the band hasn't troubled my charts with new material since 1985 (or even existed, I think) when they went top 20 with A Hold Of You after I'd seen them in concert at Poole Arts Centre as it was known in those days. So they leap from an 8-year chart-span to err, 43 years since they punked onto the scene. Roachford is also back after a 22 year chart lay-off, and Alicia Keys after a few months but almost 2 decades of entries.

Blinding Lights is great, strangely it reminds me a bit of an 80s song in style -that being Pat Benetar Love Is A Battlefield from 1985! It's The Weeknd's best single imo anyway although The Hills was a bit of a tune.

Now you mention it I can see that sort of driving rhythm similarity, that explains why I like it so much! biggrin.gif

Hi AH, thanks as always! heart.gif

You liked the whole top 10, that's good going! biggrin.gif Yes that new Blossoms track is cute and melodic, something guaranteeing it to not make the charts these days, oops!

Glad you like the Seeb/Julie track, I was hoping it would somehow scrape into BJSC as it had only featured in 2 personal charts, but it was not to be, so hoping it makes the BJSC chart anyway as it's no chance of becoming a hit in the UK, it's not miserable enough teresa.gif

The Fizz - now you've put it into my head I can't hear anything else BUT Happenin' All Over Again when I play it! laugh.gif The hook is identical isn;t it...?!

cheers! cool.gif

Hi John!
I see new peaks for Blinding Lights, Own It and This Is Real happy.gif Lovely to see The Weeknd and Ella with big hits on their hands. Also pleased to see Everything I Wanted made your top 10 since the last time I commented.

Driving Home For Christmas still charting weeks after the fact! ohmy.gif I won't judge, just pretending to act shocked, surely you're breaking a law of some sort? Just kidding laugh.gif

Thanks Jordan and Hi! biggrin.gif

I agree about Xmas songs in the new year, it's wrong on so many levels! laugh.gif That one makes me feel all warm and gooey inside, in a good way, so it hangs on a bit better than others that just annoy me after New Years Eve laugh.gif

Cheers!
