BuzzJack Music Forum _ 20th Century Retro _ Non-Top 75 Flops

Posted by: AH Gold 18th April 2015, 11:20 PM

Thanks to a rare few days off work, and with a tragic lack of social life I've been checking out the Official UK Singles Chart Archive, now they've included the whole Top 100 from '83, and have discovered a few gems, such as these:

Tom Tom Club - The Man With The Four Way Hips (No. 82, 1983)

Three Degrees - Liar (No. 97, 1984)

Sandie Shaw - Frederick (No.93, 1986)

plus one track which I always felt should have been a hit, but never realised it wasn't that far off the Top 75:

Kirsty MacColl - In These Shoes (No.81, 2000)

There's a few to be getting on with. Any others which deserved to go Top 75 but didn't?

If this gets enough responses, how about a rate of tracks which peaked at #76 - #100? (not the catchiest of titles, admittedly, but then again it is gone midnight and I'm tipsy)

This piece of utter madness from 1994, a top 5 hit in Germany but only #77 here.

Brilliantly, it made top 30 in Scotland for reasons that will immediately become apparent.

Some my favourites :

Kirsty Maccoll - Terry (# 82)

Star Sisters - Stars on 45 (# 80)

Dana - Little Things Mean A Lot (# 92)

Yes, incredible track which deserved so much more

Dead Or Alive (International Chrysis) - Rebel Rebel (No.76, 1994)

From 1994, made #84 of March that year. This ALWAYS used to be selected on The Box. Was a hit in the US!!

"Worker Man" by Patra

This is not a good track, but deserves a LOL for the production values on the song - was originally going to be released in Summer 2003, released August 2004 and made #80!

"Painted Pony" - Acoustic Love Experience

Posted by: MyKindOfLove 22nd April 2015, 08:02 PM

Beyonce wasn't the first "Independent Woman" it was Roxanne Shante in 1990 making the dizzy heights of #77 - it's forgettable, but it's a decent feminist rap:

Jennifer Rush she of the "Power of Love" fame, was a regular in this region:

"Higher Ground" made #98 in 1990 - very up-tempo and more suited to Eurovision:

"You're My One and Only" made #90 in November 1988 - a ballad, but pleasent.

"Madonna's Eyes" made #84 in March 1986 - another up-tempo, but very dramatic and powerful - this could have been a massive hit

Whitney Houston's first single "You Give Good Love" - #93 in 1985 - This is a beautiful soul track:

Phyllis Nelson's "I Like You" from 1985, her follow up to "Move Closer" which made #81 - a different song alltogether - quite dancey this is:

The best Eurovision winner of the 1980s - "Si la vie est cadeau" by Corrine Hermes which won for Luxembourg. Made #89 in 1983.

Number 100 in 1994.
On the NPG label and featuring Prince on backing vocals.
Brilliant.

Some good choices (well maybe not Painted Pony laugh.gif ) Madonna's Eyes probably my fave of the lot.

Forgot to add this one (a former BJSC total flop for me no less):

Mandy Smith - I Just Can't Wait (No.91, 1987)

Posted by: Sword of Justice 27th April 2015, 02:04 PM

Mandy Smith is my favourite SAW arstist.

I didn't heard before "Painted Pony", it's true pure pop. cheer.gif

I love that Mandy Smith song - shame she never had a hit sad.gif "Madonna Eyes" is one of Jennifer Rush's best after "The Power of Love". I love the Dead or Alive track - good piece of tranny pop.

#79 in February 1991 - "Secret" by Heart (Why the hell wasn't this a big hit!!):

"Love Hurts" by Barbara Dickson - made #153 (Zobbel supplied the information) was the theme tune to "Band of Gold" a drama series about prostitutes - she was in it

Chaka Khan - "Through the Fire" #78 in 1985. Found a lease of life on that prat Kayne West's "Throught the wire" but the original is a gorgeous power ballad. Again, why wasn't this a bigger hit?
