This is the Spotify chart thread for May/June 2018, the go-to topic for UK Spotify chart discussion!

FAQs

What is streaming?

For streaming related FAQs read this thread.

How do I see today's Spotify chart?

To see the daily top 50 update on desktop, log in to Spotify, click 'Browse', then click 'Charts', then click 'United Kingdom Top 50', or click the link below. The desktop top 50 may update before anything else so is always worth checking if the website is not up to date. However recently it has been known to not to do (even when the website has), so do check all sources. Also note that the Spotify Website will update before external websites (Kworb, LivePopBars). Occasionally there will be a delay in the Spotify chart updating which could even take days.

Useful links:

Spotify App [top 50]
Spotify Website [top 200]
Kworb [top 200 and extra data]
LivePopBars [top 200]
SponOnTrack [top 200]

How often does the chart update?

It should update once every day, usually in the morning - although this is not 100% guaranteed. Sometimes the top 200 on the website will update but without the top 50 on the app updating, and sometimes there will be no update at all.

How many plays on Spotify equals one download sale?

150 plays. However you cannot simply play a song 150 times in one day to give it one sale, you are limited to 10 plays per day in terms of what counts to the chart. (Spotify will let you play a song on repeat 150 times if you really want to). This used to be 100 plays but the ratio was revised by the OCC at the start of 2017.

The number changes to 300 plays when a song moves to ACR. For more information on the rules of ACR see this thread. For information on what songs are currently on ACR and what songs will be moving to ACR, refer to this thread.

How much does Spotify contribute to the chart?

Streaming contributes over 90% to the singles chart as a whole, although good paid-for sales are still essential for making the very top of the chart in most cases. Spotify counts for at least 70% of all streaming sales, so doing well on Spotify is essential for doing well in the chart.

Why is my fave not doing well on Spotify?

Is it being promoted on one of Spotify's major curated playlists? If it isn't, it's unlikely to really take off! Hot Hits UK is the biggest of these playlists, with over a million followers. The playlist usually updates itself to include breaking hits once or twice a week, though there is no guarantee that your fave will get a place on the playlist. Also, the UK Top 50 is a largely followed playlist and that songs often experience a 'top 50 effect', when they enter the top 50 and get the additional exposure of being on the playlist.

Often sales hits don't cross over to being streaming hits, this is usually the case for songs with an older target audience, reality or campaign songs. Also keep in mind that it takes longer for a song to take off on Spotify than it would on iTunes.

My fave didn't debut high and is falling already, does this mean they're flopping?

Not necessarily. Most songs debut relatively low as they aren't instantly well-known, and experience a sharp decline on Day 2 as they no longer have the promoted 'New Music Friday' effect. A lot of songs manage to recover through gaining popularity and additions to playlists. Exceptions to the rule of course come from massively hyped artists/releases such as Justin Bieber/Ed Sheeran/Drake who will of course enter straight at the top.

What do the numbers mean?

The streaming figures cited in the daily chart are the number of streams each song received the previous day. Unlike the iTunes chart, Spotify is not a rolling chart so the numbers will only change once per day.

Have none of the main playlists added Alice Merton yet? That's really puzzling.

She's on Hot Hits... Italy. Not sure why they haven't pushed her onto Hot Hits UK yet when it's getting an airplay push, the song could really be a hit if they did.

Not on Today's Top Hits or anything else either.

The fact it's doing so well on sales and not top 200 on Spotify without a playlist is further proof of how the general userbase of Spotify don't even have the ability to use their own mind.

I'm sure people do actively search for it, the problem is that in order to be top 200 you need like 50,000 streams for instance today and that cannot be achieved with searches alone, sure the song has searches but not 50,000, that kind of figures can only be achieved if you're on a playlist (sadly)

I do really find it mind boggling that enough people hear a song around (and sometimes enough to really smash it on sales, moreso than this) but don't choose to actively seek it out of their own accord on here enough to even make the smallest dent.

I seriously hate the monopolisation these engineered playlists have.

Tbh I'm pretty happy about not having a mind of my own if it means I don't have to hear that Alice Merton song.

Understood, but to be fair it's not even really about that. Alice Merton is just an example at this point.

Virtual Self too though I expect even if he was added to HHUK he'd only barely make the top 200.

It's annoying but even if Spotify removed their own curated playlists (which they wouldn't, as they'd lose a lot of users who just listen through playlists, and would therefore lose advertising revenue from free users), some user-generated playlists would just take their place as the most popular and it would just be the same situation. We'd just have a random few users getting flukily popular deciding the agenda rather than Spotify.

Curated playlists are obviously here to stay and I don't have an issue with that, but what would be nice is if there was more transparency over the compilation of playlists like Hot Hits UK, or if they were decided via some sort of representative method, rather than just because one overly influential Spotify bigwig personally likes it or has been paid to include it.

For example, maybe the top 10 most popular 'new' songs each week based solely on active user searches could instantly go on Hot Hits (limiting this to one song per artist so a whole new Drake album or whatever doesn't just go on there). Or even a couple of the most popular searched for new songs from each of the main genres, to make it a bit more diverse.

Indeed, without Hot Hits UK the chart would be even slower because people would just resort to shuffling the current top 50. Aside, I also wish Spotify would display the entire top 200s on their app, or even top 100s, instead of just 50 songs.

Anyway, on Desktop now there's a banner for Filtr playlists and on their 'Hot 50 UK' playlist 'No Roots' is on there as song #18 so perhaps Hot Hits UK will be coming next, I think it's likely.

'First Time' is unfortunately flopping too compared to how well it is doing on the itunes chart. Was hoping it was going to go low top 40 officially eventually but its very unlikely now.
