BuzzJack Music Forum _ UK Charts _ Friday Chart Predictions (Thurs Update + Top 5 Sales)

Posted by: Joe. 6th February 2016, 11:28 AM

ZAYN managed the fast selling #1 of 2016 so far last week, but his second-week fate is unknown. Lukas Graham's '7 Years' is fast gaining in popularity and could, take on the #1 spot. In terms of new entries, there's not as much going on as last week, but we have new releases from Katy B and DJ Fresh both fight for top 40 entries, along with Adele who properly begins the single campaign for 'When We Were Young', releasing the single mix along with putting the song on Spotify.

In album news, Sir Elton John is the biggest new release this week, with 'Wonderful Crazy Night', which fights for the top spot. After missing the #1 with incredible opening sales over 200k last year to the unbeatable Adele, Coldplay come out this week all guns blazing, reducing their album to 99p on Google Play, and reducing it on Amazon and iTunes ready for their big Superbowl halftime show on Sunday, can they score that belated #1? We also have new releases from Foxes, Future, Eric Prydz and Wiz Khalifa.

Breakdown of the week

Album chart looking to be one of the most unpredictable ?

All set for the big Coldplay vs Rihanna vs Elton John vs David Bowie vs Adele battle for the number 1 spot.

Battle of the heavyweights.

Posted by: Dan_ 6th February 2016, 11:54 AM

really hope Eric Prydz does well with his album this week! His compilation from a few years back charted at #40 but as this one is being marketed as his first proper album it should at least outpeak that. Top 20 would be nice though but the album chart's always unpredictable.

Posted by: Bjork 6th February 2016, 11:58 AM

think Coldplay will grab the #1 album this week, is the googleplay offer for 1 day or the whole week????
Eric Pridz is top 10 on itunes albums, was #7 last time I checked, so should do well, top 20-30

Posted by: Bjork 6th February 2016, 11:59 AM

also the fight for #1 in singles is very interesting
7 years has quite a big lead over Zayn on itunes, almost 30%, while on Spotify Zayn is selling 450K per day while 7 years is almost on 300K and climbing... hope 7 years gets there, by far the better song

I think they'll have the offers up until at least Sunday, when it'll have an organic boost from Superbowl anyway.

I, too, think Coldplay will get the #1. 99p on Google has massive boosts even for smaller artists, so for artists like Coldplay, it could be massive. Their team have clearly thought this through.

Posted by: Doctor Blind 6th February 2016, 12:06 PM

“7 Years” will get there this on the combined chart this week I think with a continued increase in streaming, Zayn is a one-week-wonder IMO (certainly on sales anyway).

Posted by: Joe. 6th February 2016, 12:09 PM

Mint Royale has confirmed that Coldplay are already #1 in the album midweeks.

Posted by: Herbs 6th February 2016, 12:15 PM

I wonder how far into the top 40 adele can get this week with WWWY. Top 30 on itunes and spotify

Posted by: Joe. 6th February 2016, 12:19 PM

Singles
1) Lukas Graham
6) Little Mix
8) Dj Fresh
34) Katy B
68) Danny L Harle

Albums
1)Coldplay
2) Elton John
3) Bowie
4) Foxes
9) Rihanna
12) Field Music

(Remember that up to 80% of streaming data will probably be missing here)

Posted by: Dobbo 6th February 2016, 12:20 PM

DJ Fresh must have had mega pre-orders!

Posted by: JosephStyles 6th February 2016, 12:25 PM

Must be a hell of a lot of data missing for DJ Fresh to be #8 laugh.gif

Not great for Anti. I thought a lot of people thought it was heading for #1 this week?

Posted by: Jaspine Thompson 6th February 2016, 01:05 PM

Excellent to see Danny, Little Mix and DJ Fresh so high cheer.gif but as mentioned, the likely mass of missing streaming info will probably mean Danny and DJ Fresh are much lower, and Little Mix probably about #9.

Little Mix shouldn't be losing too many positions now, their song is up to #18 on Spotify and climbing on a daily basis. I'm hoping for 6 - 8 this week.

Posted by: Bjork 6th February 2016, 01:45 PM

really thought Anti would climb at least into the top 3

I actually don't get the 99p for Coldplay, sure the album was selling alright and could have had a chance even without the 99p reduction considering all the super promo this week

On a side note though most of her albums were released in november so lower salea would have been expected but its rihanna oh how the mighty have fallen

Ooh that's great news for Coldplay ohmy.gif I didn't think they'd ever find an opportunity to get #1 with this album in the end.

It's their only studio album not to get to number one. This week is a good opportunity to put that right.

They need to stop with these stupid release strategies. They should release it to download within a week of releasing it to radio

Posted by: Joe. 7th February 2016, 01:26 PM

I think the main reason for Dj Fresh's failure is that no1curr because the song doesn't stand out. It wouldn't have done any better as an on air sale.

Posted by: Steve201 7th February 2016, 01:44 PM

Yeh it sounds like every other DJ fresh release for the past 6 years and so he's not living up to his name any longer - a new Sigala track for instance would do much better held back because they are flavour of the month chart wise but I still agree held back releases in this day and age is a ridiculous tactic.

This is very true. DJ Fresh has done so much better in the past.

This song below is a lot better by his standards and should do well in the chart:

Posted by: mdh 7th February 2016, 02:01 PM

^^^ I wouldn't even be able to tell that involved DJ Fresh had I not read it, though. It's all Sigala sound.

Posted by: Eva_coco_may 7th February 2016, 02:46 PM

Shes just shot her music video, promo starts next week, so maybe it will climb up the charts then. Its barely had any radio play yet, the impact date is weeks away and to call it a flop when the campaign for it hasnt started is a bit unfair.

All of a sudden a heldback release strategy is pathetic? No one cared 2/3 years ago, just because most have switched to OAOS doesn't mean all labels have to.

In a sea of OA/OS releases, it does feel like cheating really if only a select few do held-back, gives them an instant advantage for a higher peak while other OA/OS releases, which are bigger hits, get called flops just for not peaking high.

Posted by: Dan_ 7th February 2016, 03:16 PM

Except this DJ Fresh single isn't going to peak high even with the held back release, so it's not exactly a cheat method to get a hit all the time

Posted by: JosephStyles 7th February 2016, 03:18 PM

Oh I know, but generally speaking it is basically a cheat to get a high peak in this day and age (it wasn't so bad when everyone did it). If this goes top 40, it'll only have made it there through this held-back strategy (and it'll also be a miracle at this rate but even so).

Hoping DJ Fresh and Tiesto hold on to the top 40.

Pleased Coldplay are gonna snatch the #1 and get their 7th studio album chart topper, It's a great album just a shame it's taken a 99p Google promotion and being reduced to half price on iTunes to do it (On top of the SB50 performance that they are getting hammered for in the States this morning cry.gif )

Posted by: girl_from_oz 8th February 2016, 06:31 PM

Hope Chris Isaak holds on to that top 40 place

MW sales added - 7 Years on 36.9k and Coldplay on 19.1k (and that's before the Superbowl effect).

Is it looking like Rihanna's Spotify streams have been added to Work and the album? Comparing to last week percentages I mean.

Good to see Little Mix heading for the top 10 again, even if it is with my least favourite single thus far from this new album of theirs (mainly because of Derulo).

Absolutely love the new little mix song great to see them get another top 10

Only thing that annoys me is derulo i dont mind him singing on the song its the video that bothers me must he always do that dance it steals some of the emotion from it mad.gif

My issue isn't with whether I hate it or not (in fact I find it vaguely passable, but definitely no better), it's the fact that there has been no variation in the #1s this year - anything from a different genre would be welcome, you know, anything that's not pre-pubescent whining over an acoustic guitar.

Love Yourself in particular is what is meant. It's practically an Ed Sheeran song (well he did write it), and that's no bad thing for me. The #1s this year seem to be of a similar style but not similar enough to blend into one, or even close to that for me...

To my ears I agree, but this is probably the peak of the singer-songwriter saturation we've seen recently. Reminds me of the deep house phase of 2014 in many ways. The easiest way for record labels to get a hit right now are these sort of songs.

3beat (label of Sigma, Fuse ODG & Stylo G) have abandoned their held-back release strategy and with their songs underperforming, surely only a matter of time before MoS do so too. This DJ Fresh song sounded a guaranteed top 20, but has been held back too long.

Posted by: Bjork 9th February 2016, 02:27 PM

call them whatever you want but Bieber or Zayn are no singer-songwriters, do you think they have something in common with people like Bob Dylan, Damien Rice, Joan Baez, Joni Mitchell, Tracy Chapman, Leonard Cohen etc??? come on!!!! They're silly pop singers, that's like an insult to real singer-songwriters!!!!!

and Shawn Mendes... he did not write or had anything to do with Stitches, he's no singer-sognwriter he's just a pure bubblegum pop singer, same as Britney or Kylie, and I'd out Zayn and Bieber in the same category, just cos they're added as co-writers in a song with 10 co-writers cos they changed a comma, that doesn't make them Joan Baez smile.gif

If you take part in writing songs then you're a singer-songwriter. You don't need to be dead to be able to write songs, you'd do well to realise that.

You have no idea what the writing process for anyone who's listed as a writer on their songs is like, so it's bizarre that you are so sure that people like Justin do the bare minimum for their writing credits. But I guess the people who are most confident in their assumptions tend to be the most ignorant people.

Love this comment. Exactly how i feel. I know music is subjective but if you compare an original piece of popular music with a lazy cover version then you're asking for ridicule

Technically yes but regarding the genre of the singer-songwriter then you can't really.

Also, can we ditch the assumption that to be a great artist you have to write your own songs? Writing songs it a totally different talent to singing songs.

It's more than that. Your primary instrument of choice has to be acoustic. The major themes in your lyrics are confessional with elements of storytelling.

Yes you can, it's a very broad genre. Widely disliked Jessie J is a singer-songwriter for example. Just because someone writes pop, or music you don't particularly like, it doesn't;t mean they can't fit that category.

Yes it does mean they can't fit that category because that not how a singer/songwriter is defined.

I'm not sure what the part I have bolded has got to do with the argument.

They perhaps have a wider range of talent in music and I have every praise for them, but I don't think it necessarily means they're better artists. Obviously the question of who is better is totally subjective, but I don't think it's a good attitude for any fan of music to say something like pop is crap and an insult to 'real' artists, just to use what Bjork said.

Nah, its two fold - mainly if you write a song your connection and meaning with the song is of course infinitely higher than one that has arrived on your desk. it's hardly written from your deepest self.

Secondly and more importantly is the talent involved, with 7bn people on the planet there are a lot of good voices - creating original music worthy of impacting people and lasting is an extrodinarily rare and far superior talent, imo.

Posted by: timjimlee 10th February 2016, 03:55 PM

As it looks like Coldplay have the number 1 Album in the bag this week wonder whether next week will be another 2015 Album getting to top,

Either Bieber or Adele both performing at Grammys will surely sell more than Kanye West. Grammys need to be a Kanye West-free zone after recent years especially as there are tributes to the likes of David Bowie planned.
The Gaga performance could push Best of Bowie back to number 1.

Little mix looking comfortable for top 10 with very little promotion cheer.gif cheer.gif

Although at the same time it decreases their chances of number 1 cry.gif

Would appreciate the Midweek chart position of 'If I Can Dream' please

Many Thanks.

I will be ever so disappointed of Little Mix do not hold their top 10 position now.

"25" overtaking "Blackstar" already is a no-no. Hope Coldplay can hang onto #1. As for the singles, I don't want Zayn denying Lukas Graham #1 and I hope G-Eazy and 21 Pilots can stay top 40. Shame DJ Fresh is out

What's so bad about 25 overtaking Blackstar? It was going to happen sooner or later.

"25" has been out for ages and sold nearly 3m copies. If it overtakes "Blackstar", I can see Adele doing a Simply Red

Hopefully 7 Years can be #1 for a couple of weeks (and not in the chart for 7 years happy.gif )

Ideally not for much longer than that (as great as the song is)

I wouldn't be surprised if Adele rolled her way to #1 after The Brits.

I wouldn't be surprised if she gets there next week to be honest, she is performing "When We Were Young" at the Grammys which will give the Album a boost here as well.

"21" had 23 weeks at number 1, "25" won't get that many but suspect it will be the Year's Biggest Seller.

she's even back at #1 on itunes album now, not even sure why the sudden climb

WWWY starting to get high play counts on both radio 1 & 2 over the last week? Plus perhaps a Valentines day effect, although you would expect that to be more physicals

Another hit single should mean that 25 is the default number one for the next couple of months.

Posted by: Steve201 11th February 2016, 04:51 PM

^^Yeh if theres nothing big like Bowie death, huge new release etc Adele & Justin will threaten the album top spot because they can sell 20k a week still.

Posted by: ericinatlanta 11th February 2016, 05:27 PM

I am hoping Foxes will hold on to the top 10. I'm glad Zara is doing well , hopefully a 2nd top 10 single over the next few weeks

I'm really surprised Alessia Cara seems to have stalled and isn't taking off as much as I had imagined here.

Because her streams are weak. On the other hand, Rihanna should snatch 4th place from Shawn tomorrow

Posted by: Jack 11th February 2016, 06:40 PM

No, I just meant I thought 'Here' would be a huge hit. I'm surprised it's not as popular overall as I thought it'd be.

Posted by: Bjork 11th February 2016, 06:58 PM

is the Coldplay album still on sale for 99p? cos it has slowed down a lot, Adele and Bowie/Best selling much more than them

Yup, it's #20.

Posted by: andeeeeyhart 11th February 2016, 07:23 PM

25 will back at number 1 next week I'd imagine.

Posted by: Bjork 11th February 2016, 07:26 PM

I also thought Alessia Cara was gonna do better, US top 5, full support from r1... but right now it's #25 on itunes and #40 on Spotify...

Posted by: Steve201 11th February 2016, 07:53 PM

It hasn't peaked high but has stayed steady with its AirPlay, I expect it'll fall quite quickly when it's Alisting ends next week.

weirdly enough i've always thought of i'm yours being a more commercially viable option in the uk for her, as good as here is.

That Alessia Cara song is extremely basic imo, nothing to it. unsure.gif
