If you're going to pull off a comeback, you need to come up with the goods. What better way to show the world you are back with a bang than to score your second consecutive Number 1 of the year? Exactly. Step forward, Sugababes 2.0.

Following their triumphant comeback with electroclashing, retro mashup Freak Like Me, Mutya, Keisha and Heidi returned with another genre-defying track that was part '50s ballad, part '60s girlgroup anthem and, mainly, a pop riot. Written with and produced by Xenomania, who would go on to find great success with Girls Aloud, Round Round didn't make much sense lyrically but it cemented the ladies' return and, fittingly, went straight in at Number 1.

There may have been rumours of tension in the band, but Round Round presented the trio as carefree and out for a good time. It was a recipe for success: Round Round was the second of six Number 1s for the band, in various guises, and has sold over 220,000 copies. Its parent album Angels With Dirty Faces is the band's bestselling album, with

Take a look at this week's Top 10 from 2002 – click on the image to see the full Top 100 – before we delve a little further.

It was a debut solo hit for So Solid Crew's Romeo at Number 3. So Solid had burst onto the scene with their debut smash 21 Seconds just a year earlier. One more solo hit would come for Romeo, a baffling team-up with Christina Milian about gravy. Kind of.

Daniel Bedingfield (4) was following up his debut smash Gotta Get Thru This from earlier in the year. It would go no further, but his next single would really do the business – he'd be back at Number 1 with heartfelt, and a little bit miserable tbh, ballad If You're Not The One.

Another band dealing with a lineup change were Hear'Say (6), who had recently shed original member Kym Marsh in favour of Johnny Shentall, who happened to be the boyfriend of Steps' Lisa Scott-Lee. Pop really was a small world. Sadly, pop was also very fickle and thus few people cared by this point, and Lovin' Is Easy was to be their last hit together.

In 2002, wearing white clothes and fake tan at the same time was basically the "climbing Mount Everest" of pop endurance and bravery

Speaking of Steps, two members who decided their ideal lineup was one where everyone else in the band evaporated into thin air, H & Claire, at 8. Since waving bye bye to Lisa, Faye and Lee, H and Claire had scored a Top 3 hit with DJ. There'd be another Top 10 after this, before they called it a day. Ain't it too, too bad.

Oh, and interestingly, Darius (2) and Gareth Gates (9) had been contestants together on Pop Idol earlier that year, finishing third and runner-up respectively. The winner, of course, was Will Young.

But as much of a treat as the rest of the Top 10 was, today belongs to Round Round. Here's the video which sees the girls valiantly performing in the middle of a hurricane with quite painful-looking hairstyles. That's 2002 for you:

I don't usually venture into the chart forum, but this caught my eye on the home page.

This is the song that got me into the Sugababes so it's pretty life changing to me as I've followed the babes pretty religiously since. Will do a big slushy post for it's 15th birthday next year in the MKS/Sugababes forum.

It's such a special track to me, and I think it still sounds bloody good for a 14 year old song. Can't say that for the majority of the stuff it beat to the top that week.

Here's the awesome as f*** but not as awesome as the Freak Like Me video you were trying to link:

Sugababes 2.0 were unstoppable. They were by far the best line up. If the 2012 reunion had been MKH, I'd have actually been interested.

that is quite a tragic top 10 on the whole, glad 'Round Round' beat all of those other new entries to #1!

That Lasgo song is alright but got nothing on 'Something', and I like the 'Like A Prayer' cover. Nothing else though.

Yeah, not a great top ten...I've never been a huge fan of Round Round but it's certainly the biggest standout in the chart. Odd mix of those reaching the end of their chart careers (HearSay, H & Claire) with some newer faces, and the less said about that Like A Prayer cover the better.

Full credit to Lasgo though for doing what many Europop acts only dream of, and actually cracking the UK for a while - four top 30 hits between 2002-04, 'Something' and 'Alone' going top ten. Especially impressive when you consider the UK was about a year behind the rest of the continent with the first two, third single 'Pray' catching up by being released roughly the same time as the rest of Europe.

2002 pop really was largely dire, so bland and faceless (Sugababes excepted).

2001 had the dying breaths of Cheiron, which even when on its last legs was still incredible, while a much edgier pop sound arrived at the end of 2002, to herald in 2003, when loads of classics with a completely new sound for the 00s emerged. Most of the stuff floating around for the majority of 2002, particularly UK pop, was so dull. Thank god Eurodance was on form that year (and Kelly Llorenna <3).

Still find it bizarre that Madhouse achieved such a big hit with a Madonna cover version (3-5-7-8-11-15-30-33-41-52-54) and followed it up with a cover of 'Holiday' that went Top 25.

They basically nicked someone else's idea, didn't they? Someone mashed up Madonna's vocals with the House of God beat - the one Black Legend used for The Trouble With Me (this being the peak of the early noughties mashup craze), and Madhouse cashed in on it by re-recording the entire thing and releasing it as theirs. They formed and split up in the space of a few months.

I can't really listen to it without imagining the poor bloke who made the original, and wondering what he thought of someone's copy of his mashup being a massive #1 across the world...although I suppose Madonna herself was the real winner as she'd have got tons of royalties.

I believe 'Round Round' had sold over 254k by June 2009, so the 220k figure is incorrect. Perhaps it should be 320k instead?!

Sales info, taken from Alan Jones' Chart Commentary at Music Week:

Singles

1. 79,000 Sugababes
2. 42,500 Darius

4. 35,000 Daniel Bedingfield

Albums

1. 31,000 By The Way - Red Hot Chili Peppers

9. 16,000 Melody AM - Royksopp
14. 12,300 X - Def Leppard
51. 4,000 The All-Time Greatest Hits - Elvis Presley

Compilations

1. 44,000 Now 53

4. 22,000 Trance Masters

As you can see, sales information wasn't as extensive back then.

Finally a then recently launched new service - Shazam. Back then you had to phone 2580 from your mobile phone and then place your mobile next to the music source you wanted recognised. After 30 seconds the phone call would automatically end and then a text would be sent listing the title and artist. Cost: 50p per mobile call (59p from Vodaphone) and 50p per tag. The service only worked back then with Orange, T-Mobile, O2 and Vodaphone.

Shazam Tag Chart (Pre-Release tracks only)

1. The Theme - Jurgen Vries
2. The Tide Is High (Get The Feeling) - Atomic Kitten
3. Crossroads - Blazin Squad
4. Forever - N-Trance
5. Ultra - Trisco
6. My Neck My Back - Khia
7. Harder - Kosheen
8. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee - Ms Dynamite
9. Silver Screen Shower Scene - Felix Da Housecat
10. Two Months Off - Underworld

It took two years for Khia's record to make the top 75, reaching number 4 in October 2004. In November 2002 the record entered and peaked at number 141 and in November 2003 it was re-issued for the first time and peaked at number 195.

So much of those songs from 2002 wouldn't stand a chance in today's music scene (Round Round being an exception). It's made me feel pretty old seeing that.

I really liked Round Round at the time. I liked how it changed to become a slower tune and then went back to the normal tune.

Mad'house Like A Prayer is such a tune with those additional instrumental house bits adding to the already great song by Madonna (although it may be a cover in the Mad'house tune idk). When I heard the original I would always add in those sound effects when singing along to it.

Some of the trance songs in 2002 would have possibly been hits in 2014 if they were new then as there were quite a few trancey progressive and big room house songs that year and the move to trance wouldn't have been much.

I still own the Mad'House album laugh.gif I love the Like A Prayer cover and the album was just more Madonna dance covers! La Isla Bonita was my favourite <3 lead singer Buse was also apparently a star swimmer (if I recall correctly from the Now 52 booklet...that album features a remix of the track as they presumably couldn't get the rights to the original).

That Shazam chart is interesting, I think I used it as a paid service once. It makes sense for a (great) instrumental to be at the top as you couldn't just google the lyrics to find out. Forever was pretty good from N-Trance too, nice to follow the Set You Free re-release with an original top ten (FINALLY, after all those tragic covers they put out after Set You Free smashed first time around).

Ahh how annoying! sad.gif A rare opportunity to get an updated girl group sales figure and it's wrong. :')

Not sure how likely it is that it'd have grown to 320k. Freak Like Me was on almost 276k in June 2009, and had increased to 307,400 as of April 2016 (including streaming units). At the end of 2002 'FLM' was on 235k, and 'RR' on 225k, so up to 2009 'FLM' proved to be the stronger seller by extending the gap to 20k. I suppose it's not impossible that 'RR' picked up steam in the last few years though... and I note that it is more popular than 'FLM' on Spotify. Hmm!
