Chart Commentary



Another week, another new #1! This time it's from Swedish singer/songwriter Ulrik Munther, who is perhaps best known for participating in Melodifestivalen in 2012 and 2013. Ulrik made his chart debut in 2013 as I discovered his self-titled debut album (originally released in 2011). The release of second album Rooftop that year kept his presence high throughout 2013, scoring hits with singles Tell the World I'm Here and Requiem, but his biggest hit was and still is Heroes In Defeat (Change Your Mind), an album track from his debut. Ulrik's achieved five #1s in total, the most recent three all being from his Swedish language third album, Allt jag ville säga. New single Coffee in Shanghai sees Ulrik move back to English language songs, and gives him his sixth #1.

Just missing out on the #1 spot this week is Selena Gomez. Fetish jumps 11 places to #2, giving Selena a second #2 hit after 2015's Good For You. She's yet to achieve a #1 hit as a lead artist, but did make the top spot at the start of 2016 with Charlie Puth on We Don't Talk Anymore. Fetish is Selena's tenth top 10 hit, and the highest position this year, following #3 hit It Ain't Me and #5 hit Bad Liar. Fetish features Gucci Mane, who has charted only once before, on Fifth Harmony's #15 hit Down. He achieved a new peak last week with Fetish's #13 debut, but surpasses that again this week.

Making a huge instant impression this week is Louis Tomlinson, who debuts at #8 with new single Back to You on less than 24 hours of availability. Only three other songs have debuted top 10 in the same time frame - Anne-Marie's Ciao Adios (#5), Katy Perry's Chained to the Rhythm (#9) and Harry Styles' Sign of the Times (#1). Ciao Adios and Chained to the Rhythm debuted the same week, and the latter ultimately blocked the former from the top spot despite a slower start. Back to You is Louis' second top 10 hit, after 2016's Just Hold On, which charted at #1. Only two of Louis' One Direction bandmates join him in having two top 10 hits - Niall Horan was the first, with #5 hit This Town and #9 hit Slow Hands, and Harry Styles followed last week, as #1 mega hit Sign of the Times was followed up with #5 hit Two Ghosts. Back to You features Bebe Rexha, who scores her fifth top 10, and Digital Farm Animals, who scores his second top 10 and a brand new personal best. Expect a large leap for Back to You next week!

The final new song in this week's top 10 comes from chart veteran Alyssa Reid. The Canadian singer made her debut at the beginning of 2012, when Alone Again entered the chart at #1 and spent 5 consecutive weeks at the top. Alone Again's success has been totally unrivaled ever since, spending 73 weeks (!!!!!!!!!!) in my top 40 (worth nothing that so far, nothing this year has spent over 20 weeks in my top 40). She's managed a total of four #1s, and new single High becomes her ninth top 10.

Elsewhere, Little Mix gain a new peak with their Stormzy collaboration Power. It's spent eight weeks in the chart already and had seemingly peaked at #13 for two weeks, but jumps four places to #12 this week, matching the peak of No More Sad Songs. It's a new personal best for Stormzy, who has only charted with Power so far. He's joined by INDIIA and Whitney Phillips in the new peaks club, who both score a new personal best of #27 with their collaboration Out of Love.

A host of chart debuts occurred this week - Helena Paparizou, RIVRS, ZOË and Bryson Tiller all chart for the very first time. Helena and ZOË are boosted by the recent BJSC contest, while I discovered RIVRS' Playing With Fire on the current BooHoo.com advert with the help of Shazam. Speaking of Shazam, it's influenced another hit this week - MAGIC! are new at #25 with No Regrets, which I heard on a TV show and liked!

In the album chart, The Vamps safely secure a second week at the top with the Night Edition of Night & Day. It's been boosted this week by a live gig and meet & greet that I attended. Previous album Wake Up only spent one week at the top, so Night & Day (Night Edition) has already managed one better! Debut album Meet The Vamps remains their best though, with six weeks at the top over its 65 non-consecutive weeks in my album chart.

Hi Joseph

Really enjoying the new Louis track! I did find Just Hold On pretty dull and lifeless but I feel like this is a bit more exciting already and far catchier too. Both are a little on the screechy side if I'm being completely honest but I can look past that when the song is such a bop

Glad to see Wild Thoughts finally enter even if it is pretty low, I love how the whole track just oozes swag and coolness and Rihanna just looks flawless in the video. I'm so glad it's made the top spot in the UK even if the circumstances are a bit of shambles...

Yay at the re-entry for Middle of the Night too, I'm still hoping that it can take off even if it has been out for ages now. It's not quite as amazing as All Night for me but I do still find it very catchy and it deserves a much better chart position than it has. Yay at them getting album #1 though after their last era performed pretty poorly on the whole

I'm liking the new Louis song, I wasn't expecting great things but it won me over on first listen

Haide was a brilliant winner, the exact type of catchy pop I love!

New Louis Tomlinson is really good
