After a few weeks hanging around in the top 5, Clean Bandit are hoping to dethrone Ed Sheeran of the #1 spot with the help of Zara Larsson on 'Symphony', its most likely in the bag for Clean Bandit & Zara, but anything could happen been a low sales week something big could drop. New single releases this week come from Shawn Mendes 'There’s Nothing Holdin’ Me Back', Lana Del Rey feat. The Weeknd 'Lust For Life', Paramore 'Hard Times', Luis Fonsi & Daddy Yankee feat. Justin Bieber 'Despacito' and a possible re-entry from Steps 'Scared of the Dark', also new peaks for the Disciples 'On My Mind', Lady Gaga 'The Cure' and Jason Derulo feat. Nicki Minaj & Ty Dolla $ign 'Swalla'.

In the album chart will Steps be able to dethrone Ed Sheeran with their brand new studio album 'Tears on the Dancefloor' or will they have to settle for #2. Other brand new album releases from Imelda May 'Life Love Flesh Blood', Texas 'Jump On Board', While She Sleeps 'You Are We', Incubus '8', Wilkinson 'Hypnotic', Brad Paisley 'Love and War', Maximo Park 'Risk and Exist and Sheryl Crow 'Be Myself'

Not very likely I'd say. Ed will have a 15k+ streaming advantage from the outset, based on last weeks sales. They may be no 1 in the first set of midweeks but will probably drop behind during the week.

Posted by: Ariels Apr 22 2017, 10:12 AM

Steps. Steps. Steps.

Posted by: danG Apr 22 2017, 10:16 AM

Divide sold 62k last week and 84k the week before. Presumably meaning he'll sell about 50k this week which I think will still be way ahead of what Steps will sell.

Posted by: LustForLife Apr 22 2017, 10:34 AM

Symphony HAS to get to #1 this week!

To be honest they should bag it, but with sales so low, and something else drops, it can easily get beaten, technically all you need is 42k plus for a #1 this week.

Posted by: Tawdry Hepburn Apr 22 2017, 10:38 AM

My absolute ideal scenario is both Clean Bandit/Zara and Steps taking the singles and albums pole position respectively.

Posted by: cqmerqn Apr 22 2017, 10:39 AM

Steps could get the number one. 50k isn't too difficult for all the hype.

Their strength will probably be physicals. They're #1 on iTunes though which is a good sign!

Posted by: Jamesy Apr 22 2017, 11:25 AM

H has just said on Radio 2 that Steps are midweek Number 1 🙈

Posted by: 360Jupiter Apr 22 2017, 12:11 PM

Gaga has reduced The Cure to 59p which should extra-boost any surge this week.

Posted by: timjimlee Apr 22 2017, 12:47 PM

Ed will make it eight weeks at the top on the initial run for 'Divide' to equal the initial run of 'Multiply' but likely that Gorillaz will take the top spot the week after.

Midweek seems to getting earlier every week. In fairness to H you can't blame him building up their chances, they are definitely performing better than I thought.

Posted by: Zárate Apr 22 2017, 02:05 PM

I highly doubt Steps will get to #1 unless they're on like 25k already

Posted by: Bjork Apr 22 2017, 02:06 PM

ohh Minty just posted, looks like Steps could be #1??

Neil Claxton‏Verified account @mintroyale
Steps are going to have a nice number 1 album this week. Imagine how ridiculous that would have sounded 6 months ago.

Posted by: Bjork Apr 22 2017, 02:07 PM

he also confirms CB at #1 in singles

Neil Claxton‏Verified account @mintroyale

Also, Clean Bandit could well finally knock Sheeran off the top and get to number 1. Hurrah!

The new Dua Lipa single might not even get top 40 this week. The label will probably panic and move the album back to October.

Posted by: timjimlee Apr 22 2017, 02:33 PM

Well Minty has been known to overstate chances of getting to number 1 in the past but in response to question of whether Steps can do 60k he has responded with "it's sales may fall off a cliff after day one, but it could well get there".
50k may actually be enough this week.

Posted by: gooddelta Apr 22 2017, 02:41 PM

Great that they're #1 on the opening mids but there will be a huge amount of pre-orders in that figure. I'm worried they will just stop selling and Ed will quickly catch up, just as he did on Take That a few weeks ago, especially after the Jools Holland promo.

Posted by: SKOB Apr 22 2017, 03:55 PM

I would wait until Tuesday to see the real situation between Ed and Steps

Posted by: PaulM1983 Apr 23 2017, 11:18 AM

Minty just tweeted that Steps' sales did indeed fall off the proverbial cliff. Tomorrow's update should be interesting. Hopefully they're still good for number 2 or 3.

Posted by: gooddelta Apr 23 2017, 11:22 AM

Damn, I was expecting a #2 debut which is still fantastic and I suspect that's what will happen. There's really no moving Ed.

Posted by: PaulM1983 Apr 23 2017, 11:41 AM

He just replied to me to say number 2 is realistic. So, that's as good as most of us were ever expecting anyway. Honestly, Steps grabbing a number 2 album with new material in 2017 is amazing.

Posted by: cqmerqn Apr 23 2017, 11:47 AM

They only had 1 signing and that was yesterday.

Still hope they can get #1 - they was behind all week when they released 'Ultimate Collection' and then grabbed it at the last minute (Although I think they only needed 23k to do so).

Regardless of where they end up the fact they are challenging for the top is remarkable seeing as their last studio album tanked and has sold 18k in total.

Steps - 'Ultimate Collection' was midweek #2 on Tues/Wed/Thurs, midweek #1 on Friday! (Evanescence prevented them from midweek #1 in the first 3 days).

Its first week sales = 34,200, and funnily enough it was Ed Sheeran who was at #2 (with '+')! If only they could manage this a second time this week.

Posted by: gooddelta Apr 24 2017, 11:50 AM

There's only one act up to the Ed slaying job. Going where nobody else dare venture over the last few months, it's Lisa Scott-Lee, of 'not a top ten hit' Electric and b-list at Capital fame and her cheery entourage.

Lisa slayed Shape Of You off iTunes No.1 and she needs to slay his album off No.1 right now frankly. Time to reduce Tears On The Dancefloor on iTunes methinks.

Posted by: Tinasha Apr 24 2017, 11:55 AM

I don't see how Steps' album sales have "fallen off a cliff" on day two when they're holding up on iTunes and on top of the Amazon Physical chart (which is usually a really good indicator of album success). Obviously Ed's streaming will still slay, but streaming doesn't effect the album chart anywhere near as much. It'll be interesting seeing the sales today.

Wasn't ultimate collection basically a rerelease of gold with an extra song or 2 which made it even more impressive

But remember their first day sales will include all pre-orders (presumably quite substantial). Obviously Mr Claxton knows this, but presumably they've sold even less on Day 2 than he expected.

Shawn will be low top 10, Gaga low top 20, Paramore ~#30, Lana mid 30s I'd say. Steps are harder to predict, if everything sold the same for the rest of the week they'd end up at #39 but that won't be the case, can see them just missing the top 40.

Swalla top 10 and Symphony #1 *.* It seems unlikely but I still have a nagging feeling Ed will overtake, will actually cry if that happens 😫 Gaga slaying too, hope it can rise into the top 10 in the next few weeks!

Posted by: Zeebre12 Apr 24 2017, 05:48 PM

Surely Lady Gaga will go top 10 in a week or two if it keeps rising on streaming, increased airplay and if it stays 59p?

Does it look likely that Despacito will stay top 40 - could it climb? biggrin.gif

Posted by: Glenn 69 Apr 24 2017, 06:43 PM

Think the gap between CB and Ed tomorrow will be a better guide to No1. I still think they overestimate Thursday's streaming

I am also big reggae/reggaeton fan so would love to see Despacito crack T40

I think iSpy and maybe Cold will be ahead of No Promises on Friday. angel.gif
Really surprised iSpy is not yet top 40 at this point. ohmy.gif

Shame Steps' chance of keeping the #1 album are slim, but that's an amazing result for them and top 2 looks guaranteed.

Elated that 'Symphony' will finally get #1!

The album chart should have a few obscure albums in there due to Record Store Day last Saturday. I think the David Bowie album is one of them.

In case anyone cares, these are the album chart entries I've identified that are RSD releases/re-releases (although of course some of them were already available in other formats)

10 David Bowie - Cracked Actor (Live in Los Angeles '74)
26 David Bowie - Bowpromo 1
35 The Cure - Greatest Hits
39 Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band - Hammersmith Odeon London '75
44 Sex Pistols - God Save Sex Pistols
46 Madonna - Dance Mix
47 Vangelis - Blade Runner
50 The Cure - Acoustic Hits
52 Ocean Colour Scene - Moseley Shoals Live
55 Pink Floyd - London 1966-67
57 The View - Hats Off To The Buskers
60 Slaves - Take Control
63 The Who - Quadrophenia
67 Elton John - 17-11-70
69 Cabbage - Young Dumb And Full Of
70 The Cribs - Men's Needs Women's Needs Whatever
71 Blossoms, Joe Duddell, The No. 6 Ensemble - Unplugged At Festival No. 6
72 Elastica - Elastica
83 The Doors - Live At The Matrix '67
91 Neil Young - Decade
94 Dee-Lite - Groove Is In The Heart

There's also an RSD format of the Maximo Park album but as it's a substantial new release this week I didn't include it in the list.

Got beaten by Steve Miller Band 'Abracadabra', that was the week when they change the compiler, if I remember rightly.

Posted by: The Hit Parade Apr 24 2017, 09:55 PM

It was The Joker - Abracadabra did actually peak at 2.
When the chart was originally announced both songs had the same figure, so Number One was awarded to Steve Miller Band on a technicality, amid much controversy.

By the way, I looked on Discogs and according to the timings on the disc label, the RSD single has a total playing time of 20 minutes and one second. Presumably that's why it's listed on the albums rather than the singles chart. EDIT: except the limit is 25 minutes now.

Ed to hold onto the singles #1, Symphony is an abomination, it is just dull and lifeless and a letdown for Clean Bandit after Rockabye. It should be #101, not #1.

I don't like Symphony either; it sounds like a medicore Eurovision song - but rather that
be #1 than Sheeran.... The Harry Styles song is actually pretty good!!!!

Posted by: timjimlee Apr 25 2017, 10:35 AM

Symphony is decent but currently I think people see it as a better alternative to Ed's residency at the Top.
Last week's Sales were dire, this week's not much better (even allowing for a price drop), suspect it will make it but ultimately be a forgettable number 1 (and a lucky one given the rate the Sales have been reducing).

I think they'll do it; but given spotify data is missing and Ed is leading combined there, the gap is going to be smaller than that figure reported.

I'm hoping that Ed doesn't suddenly pick up more sales/ streams

Posted by: Tinasha Apr 25 2017, 01:37 PM

They'll be fine, even though Ed's streaming is still higher, Clean Bandit are outselling him 2:1 on iTunes.

I think Symphony would get more than 1 week at number 1, once it gets to number 1 lol which should be this week, Shape of You finally starting to slow down a bit!

Posted by: Bjork Apr 25 2017, 01:54 PM

there is no chance,
CB are outselling Shape by 4:1 on iTunes, the digitaldata site tends to overestimate but the current daily figures are like 5,000 sales for CB and just over 1,000 for Shape... Shape is barely ahead on Spotify, combined it's 40,000 streams ahead aka 400 copies...
if something, the difference is gonna increase

Posted by: JosephStyles🐶 Apr 25 2017, 01:54 PM

Yeah Symphony has #1 on lock, Ed's not THAT far ahead on Spotify combined so it's not gonna make that big a difference.

Lucky perhaps but I don't think it'll be a forgettable #1, considering it's already spent a couple of weeks at #1 on sales and is demonstrating great longevity in the top 5. It's not like it's gonna suddenly go 1-4-15-21-39-x after this week.

I tend to disagree, when there is other tracks that have stuck around for a while, and outstayed their welcome, some tracks are just old now, like Shape of You, I can't understand some of the guys here want Ed Sheeran to stick around far longer, when other artists have lost out on a #1 during his reign, Jax Jones, RagnBone Man etc etc etc. You need quality, not samey week on week. happy.gif

A few years ago, lots of people complained that all we had was flash in the pan number ones each week with hardly any longevity. Now we have longevity and people complain nayway. People will always find things to complain about with the charts.

I'm pretty sure if it were Jax Jones at #1 for 16 weeks it wouldn't be complained about actually. Maybe with people only getting bored in the last two weeks perhaps.

Posted by: Glenn 69 Apr 25 2017, 04:53 PM

Shape of You actually appeals to lovers of many different types of music- there is a dance mix by Galantis, a Stormzy mix for grime fans, a stripped down acoustic version, the Major Lazer mix and even an unofficial Dancehall version credited to Jah B. I actually think there is nothing samey about it but that might be just me

I also like Despacito but wish they hadn't roped in Justin Bieber to get a hit!

There's longevity and then there's spending upwards of a quarter of the year at number one.

I don't want a new number one every week nor do I want 8+ weeks at the top to become the norm. There is a happy medium. Even if you're a fan of 'Shape Of You' and not so keen on 'Symphony', surely you can sympathise with people who think 14 weeks is long enough and it's about time we had something else at number one?

'Symphony' should spend a few weeks at number one too, before perhaps Shawn Mendes or someone overtakes. It's already spent a while in the top five too so it's not by any definition a 'flash in the pan' number one if it gets there.

I feel like the turnover will speed up from now. The only artists who can genuinely sustain a massive amount of time at #1 in this age of such low sales (I think 45-65k will become the norm for a #1) are Adele, Bieber and Ed Sheeran. Without them, we'll probably have a theme of big songs spending 1-5 weeks at #1.

Managing #1 at all is impressive in this day and age though, no? I don't think you can really say "if it was released earlier", you could say that for loads of songs and their chart position may have ended up different but that's not how things work. It's managing decent longevity anyway and he still has the video release to come.

Galway Girl still has a proper vid to drop and Ed is playing Glastonbury. Could it get to No1 in June?

Posted by: danG Apr 26 2017, 10:22 AM

I think Ed will try and push it to number one just so he can claim two #1s from the album. Though I'm not sure if it'll actually make it seeing as it's been out for ages and has already peaked in sales.

Posted by: Jamie Barkley Apr 26 2017, 11:56 AM

I know Ed having all his new tracks chart at the same time was really annoying but in the long run, I'm quite relieved. It means this 'era' probably won't go on as long as the last one did where it was almost two years between 'Sing' debuting and 'Photograph' finally leaving. With the exception of 'Galway Girl' I can't really see any of the album tracks getting too far back up if they get proper releases.

Hopefully the promise of them stripping will help the album get to the top though, much like the Dappy nude leak number one.

Steps have had an amazing week shame the single can't beat it's peak with all the work they have put into it.

Omg Lana isn't gonna miss the top 40 again is she?? sad.gif

Good numbers for Steps. They've managed more than a lot of established acts with big hit singles to push their albums, so they should be really happy with that. They should get to 35k for the week.

YAAAAS, Clean/Zara cheer.gif

Paramore tho sad.gif

I get the feeling ZAYN will peak at #24 for another week.

Boo at Lana about to slide outside of the top 40. Her and Steps need to hang on.

Hopefully Bruno can sneak into the top 10 this week.

Just like to say, thank god Clean Bandit have got a nice lead, over Ed

Posted by: LustForLife Apr 26 2017, 05:28 PM

Oh god hold on Lana!!!!

Also great to see Clean Bandit having a comfortable lead biggrin.gif

Posted by: danG Apr 26 2017, 05:31 PM

oh boo at Lana being in real danger of dropping off the top 40 :|

at least Clean Bandit are safely #1 and 'Swalla' nearly in the top 5 now *_*

Steps put up a good fight!

Posted by: cqmerqn Apr 26 2017, 05:46 PM

Where's Lorde please?

Posted by: mdh Apr 26 2017, 05:47 PM

Fingers crossed Swalla can make the top 5 - much chance of that happening or not?

Eeek at Lana, I think another #41 debut would kill me - such a shame if so as Lust For Life is nearly as incredible as Love sad.gif

Despacito looking like it'll be top 30 this week, fab news! wub.gif

Based on what we've seen on Spotify so far this week, I think he'll probably have to settle for #6 this week biggrin.gif

Posted by: cqmerqn Apr 26 2017, 05:52 PM

Oh good to see it hanging around then. Thanks.

Technically last Studio Album was 'The Fall' released in 2011, it opened weakly (peaking at number 12) but this was more of a group of songs they had recorded whilst on Tour.
Previous year's Album 'Plastic Beach' opened with Sales upwards of 74K.

To be fair 'The Fall' was given away for free from the bands website a few months before being physically available. There seems to be alot of hype around 'Humanz', so I'm hoping it can do between 30-40k.

PMSL steps fans going crazy on Twitter at Ed overtaking them laugh.gif

Yes I was thinking that range as well, will be a close call to overcome Ed.

@OfficialSteps #steps #Tearsonthedancefloor if we all just buy one more copy, a present for a friend, we'll get steps to number 1

Disappointing for Steps losing out on the number 1 but the sales are still great for them.

Posted by: Hadji Apr 26 2017, 08:08 PM

Wasn't expecting Clean Bandit to increase their lead from Ed Sheeran but well done to them and I hope they increase their lead even more and on the albums, Ed's probably overtaken Steps because of streaming

Posted by: 360Jupiter Apr 26 2017, 08:59 PM

Swalla securely in the top 10 tho biggrin.gif

Posted by: 777666jason Apr 26 2017, 10:04 PM

Shame it gotta settle for number 2 but it's already outsold ultimate collections first week

Decent sales although this time they don't have daytime radio 1 support so might struggle to topple Ed next week!

Come on Steps, pull through! I am thinking of buying a copy!
