Hi and welcome to a new feature that will take a closer look at the nominees in each of the categories for the upcoming Oscars in February. This one is looking at the five actors up for Best Supporting Actor at this year's awards:

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR

The nominees are:
Mahershala Ali – Moonlight (as Juan)
Jeff Bridges – Hell or High Water (as Marcus Hamilton)
Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea (as Patrick Chandler)
Dev Patel – Lion (as Saroo Brierley)
Michael Shannon – Nocturnal Animals (as Detective Bobby Andes)

What do you think will win? Who would you like to win? How many of these have you seen so far? What actors are you sad about missing the cut? Discuss anything you like!!

Here are the latest odds too (with Sky Bet) just to see how things are likely to pan out:

Mahershala Ali - Moonlight 1/10
Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water 12/1
Lucas Hedges - Manchester by the Sea 16/1
Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals 18/1
Dev Patel - Lion 18/1

So far I've seen 4/5 of these (not seen Moonlight yet but will hopefully see it this Friday so I can tick them all off). I would rank the performances like this:

1 Lucas Hedges – Manchester by the Sea
2 Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals
3 Dev Patel - Lion
4 Jeff Bridges - Hell or High Water

I've not really been that impressed with this category this year and whilst I like all the nominees, I've only really thought Lucas Hedges was amazing out of the lot. I know he's pretty unlikely to win though and I expect Mahershala Ali pretty much has this wrapped up already.

In terms of snubs, Aaron Taylor-Johnson was completely terrifying in Nocturnal Animals so I'd have loved for him to get a nomination and he'd probably be my favourite of the lot. It would've been nice to see Hugh Grant pop up too because he was incredibly likeable in Florence Foster Jenkins and held his own against Meryl. Less likely too but Liam Neeson and John Goodman would have been better than the bottom three for me too. And I know it was never going to happen ever but I thought George MacKay was great in Captain Fantastic too and it's a shame he was overlooked.

1 Dev Patel
2 Lucas Hedges
3 Michael Shannon
4 Jeff Bridges
5 Mahershala Ali

A shame that Mahershala is more than likely going to win, he's my last pick, he has a nice scene or two in Moonlight but there are a handful of others in that movie who would deserve the win more than him and gave more standout performances.

I would LOVE Lion to win something because of how amazing it was and Dev Patel did manage to deliver a strong emotional performance.

Lucas Hedges, I'm just pleased to see him nominated, that was definitely one of the most pleasant surprises a couple of weeks ago! Hopefully he's got a bright future ahead of him, he was great in Manchester By The Sea and it's nice to see that he found his way in here and wasn't overshadowed by Casey and Michelle.

Michael Shannon is always great, nothing different in Nocturnal Animals, but I agree with Josh that I'd rather Aaron Taylor-Johnson be in here, he gave the standout performance of the movie.

Jeff Bridges, again great, perhaps not quite the standout in Hell or High Water.

Michael Shannon is a great actor but seeing him here over Aaron is sad. Aaron stole the movie, he was on par with Amy for me. Utterly captivating and terrifying.

Sad seeing Michael as the only nomiated one from Noctural Animals, Amy and Aaron should be there. I'd even put Isla up there.

I'm 5 for 5 here now, yayy. Seen Moonlight and whilst Mahershala Ali was believable in the role, it's yet another quiet performance that didn't quite wow me. I'd still love for Lucas Hedges to win but not sad at an Ali win, he did do a good job for sure. Naomie Harris was better tho imo and she isn't gonna win sad.gif

1. Dev Patel - Lion
2. Lucas Hedges - Manchester By The Sea
3. Mahershala Ali - Moonlight
4. Jeff Bridges - Hell Or High Water
5. Michael Shannon - Nocturnal Animals

Weakest category BY FAR. 3 of them shouldn't be here in my view.

Michael Shannon is quite good but I didn't like NA and he was nothing amazing, Jeff Bridges was good but there was better than this year and I'm really confused how Mahershala Ali has received as much love as he has. Don't get me wrong he is great but apart from that dinner table scene and the moonlight scene where he is phenomenal, that is about it sad.gif I wanted more and I felt there was stronger supporting performances in Moonlight, I'd probably go for Andre Holland as my favourite supporting performance from Moonlight. On who I'd replace the other two with, I really wish Alden Ehrenreich got more buzz than he did for Hail, Caesar and Jovan Adepo in Fences who I thought was terrific, he reminded me a lot of David Oyelowo in The Butler who I also thought deserved to be nominated that year!

Love my top 2 though! Dev is fabulous and I hope he can pull of a surprise win and Lucas is fantastic in the first role I've ever seen him play! Both great! <3

Yay for our snap top 2! Come on Dev, repeat that BAFTA win <3 (even if this is the biggest case of category fraud this year imo, who exactly is the lead character supposed to be supporting)
