If you look at this weeks Top 20 there's no bands whatsoever. A few collaborations but no actual music groups.
As someone who grew up in an era when boy bands and girl bands dominated the charts as well as a slew of rock bands why is the idea of boy bands / girl groups / indie or rock bands charting in the higher reaches of the charts so unthinkable now outside of the odd - usually rubbish - indie group. Is it all cos of TikToks or have labels decided to abandon groups altogether for other reasons? |

Yes, but I wouldn't necessarily say forever. Things tend to come back around eventually.

Artemas - ILTWYKM sounds like a band with guitars but is just one man - still its sound gives me hope that indie bands may make the charts again. Also The Last Dinner Party made the singles chart a few months ago.

In the singles chart yeah, but not in the albums or in terms of live performances.

I don’t think they’re necessarily dead.
Manufactured reality tv esque groups as in Little Mix, 1D, Girls Aloud (as in finding fame that way I don’t think we’ll see have high successes again) but I think there’ll be some form of boost where we’ll see more bands finding success (maybe ala social media this time around). |

Girl groups are absolutely dead sadly. I miss the R&B groups like En Vogue, Destiny’s Child, SWV. Nowadays there’s what, Flo? And they’re hardly setting the charts alight and they’re decent but not amazing vocalists. It’s like groups are automatically seen as manufactured even when they’re not… and if they are, so what? If they can all sing and sound amazing together who cares if they had to audition for the role Mini-rant over, I’m just sick of the need for relatability nowadays

When was the last time a band got a top 10 single? Probably going back to Little Mix in 2021, but for a boyband, you're probably going back to 2016 (One Direction). Westlife nearly did in 2019 (#13), and Take That nearly did in 2017 (also #13).
It probably is cyclical but the only active bands seem to be the "legacy" (not keen on that word) ones, and new ones aren't really pushed forward in the same way as solo acts. |

Fifty Fifty (K-pop girl group, I’ve never heard of them) got one last year and OneRepublic did in 2022. Those are the latest I can find unless I’ve missed any |

In the singles chart? Yeah. But not generally - lots of them have big fanbases, and often sell more physical albums/live tickets than many faceless acts who fill up the singles chart. Look at most UK festival lineups and they're full of the likes of The Snuts, The Reytons, The Lathums, Wunderhorse, Yard Act, Sea Girls, etc.
Some of the bands that have come to popularity since 2010 and are at arena-level in the UK: IDLES, Catfish and the Bottlemen, Nothing But Thieves, The 1975, Palaye Royale, Fontaines D.C., Twenty One Pilots, Jungle, Cigarettes After Sex, Sleep Token, Architects, Ghost, Blossoms, Don Broco, Glass Animals, Greta Van Fleet, I Prevail, DMA'S. I suspect that Bad Omens, Wet Leg and The Last Dinner Party will also be at their level on their next album tours. It would be nice if more of these acts were more generally popular than just with their big fanbases, but the concept of a popular band is still far from dead. |

Girl groups are absolutely dead sadly. Girl pop groups still alive ... in Lithuania. Three out of four most famous 00s groups (Mango, 69 Danguje, Mokinukes) in country did a comeback on music scene in some last years. In serious. Yes in the singles market, bands have died in that area but albums there isn't a problem.
