BuzzJack Music Forum _ Sports and Fitness _ Colombia vs England

Posted by: Mack. 30th June 2018, 10:18 AM

It is a repeat of their 1998 group stage fixture between Colombia v England in this second round. The last match of the second round.

The game is live on ITV. Please use this thread for speculation, pre and post match chat on the England game.

How do you see this going for England?

Posted by: Dobbo 30th June 2018, 10:29 AM

Not well. If we can start strong & take an early chance or 2 we've got this but it seems too much of a stretch. Colombia are so much better than Tunisia or Panama & they have the individual superstars in Falcao & James to punish any sloppy defending.

Posted by: Rooney 30th June 2018, 10:33 AM

It's a test for me, we'll see how good this England team actually is. If James does not play then Colombia are far weaker and make no mistake about it, this side is not as good as they were 4 years ago. It's difficult to read too much in to the Belgium game as we played such a different team. Nobody from that game forced their way back in to the lineup so I think Southgate will go with the same XI as started against Tunisia.

Set up for a big game regardless, looking forward to seeing how it goes.

I think England will have to play a bit like Russia did today against Spain. They have to be well disciplined like they were in defence and try to disrupt Colombia's flow, let them pass the ball about but not to get too close to the box. Hopefully England can counterattack well too.

Posted by: Mart!n 1st July 2018, 09:07 PM

I think we can push them to the limit. The only problem with this match is televised on ITV, we lost the last match which was shown on ITV laugh.gif will lightning strike twice.

I'm not sure that playing for penalties os a good idea laugh.gif

I'd be very surprised about that, our back line and goalkeeper is by far the weakest part of the team. We like to keep possession and so do Colombia. I suspect it will be quite an even;y balanced game, all depends on who takes their chances. Looks like James will play, whether he is fit or not is an entirely different option.

It's funny just how pessimistic England fans have become. I mean, it makes sense, but I think this year is the year we get it right. I'm not saying we'll win it but there's something different about the team this year. I'm excluding the Belgium game from my views because that was an utterly pointless exercise, clear that they were playing for a loss, with our 2nd best set of players playing theirs. Colombia will be the first real test and I think the boys will go out there and really perform.

It's perfectly justified pessimism given how so often in the past we've been optimistic & the team has massively underachieved. The facts are we haven't won a knockout game in 12 years & haven't beaten what most people would consider a strong team since Argentina in 2002. We scraped past an average Tunisia side & I think the Panama demolition has gotten a lot of folks expectations rather uncomfortably high!

Different team to the one from the last 12 years. Players breaking through with everything to give. Let's see hey?

I don't think we scraped past Tunisia either. If theirs was a penalty, 2 of ours should've been penalties. That's potentially 4-1 (or 2-0). Lingard was very off target, we needed to be more clinical and were so against Panama.

The issue is and why many logical England fans like myself and Dobbo are not getting swept away with the emotion is because this England team has massive holes in it. We've not been tested yet properly, our backline is inexperienced and very weak. I don't rate Pickford and Maguire is a huge weak link for me. The players we have now are nowhere near as good as the team we had in 2010 for example, but that failed because we picked the players rather than the team.

Also seems like every British person that isn't English seems to hate the idea of England doing well? I've seen so many Scots and Irish people on YouTube and Facebook calling England 'shite' and hoping they get knocked out.

Don't understand it myself.

Posted by: LeeWallace 2nd July 2018, 07:44 PM

The only reason that I don’t want England to do well is because of the media, the ignorance is irritating and the way the media show England is what annoys me.

It comes from jealously and old rivalries, especially with the Scots. Can bet your bottom dollar if the tables were turned all the English would be hating on the Scots or Irish.

Still, I don't think the media have been unreasonable this time around. Certainly nowhere near to the level of 2006/2010. The coverage compared to other teams is only natural because England's the only home nation there, the pundits have been pretty balanced and not arrogant, and you should just ignore any tabloid and rag nonsense as a matter of course.

Also, it's coming home (still not tired of that meme).

I don't think it does go that far the other way. The English as far as I could see mostly supported Wales doing so well in the Euros, and as much as Scotland's ineptitude at major football championships amuses me, I'd love to see them back in one again and get to the knockout round their footballing history owes them, they haven't been to one this century after all.

Posted by: Evil Houdini 3rd July 2018, 12:24 PM

Yeah 2006 was the worst when it came to media hype, journalists were saying that England would win the World Cup months before the tournament started. There were lots of TV adverts about England winning the World Cup then as well.

I think that's why a lot of non-English people don't want England to win the World Cup because of how cocky the media gets a lot of the time and there's normally not much reason to be carried away in the first place.

It's because the media and the lyiads go on stupidly every time they even win a single match when England is an absolutely rubbish team and always has been. They get carried away over a crap team. This then puts a lot of pressure on said carp tram. Then, players like Beckham have effigies burned of them when the team goes out etc and hate mobs and attack dog press hate - which they usually reserve for any politician who isn't Tory. This puts even more pressure on the weak team. Penalties come and, oh, they're out.

The only time I actively hoped England would lose was in 2016 Euros and the stars aligned to give me three reasons for that. I'm otherwise pretty supportive, although it becomes difficult when things go overboard.

Posted by: Rooney 3rd July 2018, 06:59 PM

Game is pretty much two teams cancelling each other out. Should have been a red card.

That said none of our attacking play is coming off.. could be a very long night. Can't see us scoring from open play right now.

The Irish contingent of Northern Ireland still aren't British though, meanwhile the rest of the population probably won't appreciate you calling them Irish~~

I also don't see why countries should feel obliged to support their neighbours over someone else, and if the reason is due to 'patriotism' then it shows the conflation between England and Britain that can occur.

Again, it will be an even match. We just have to approach it with caution and the Sweden team with respect. Just like we did this match, at least the saner members of the England supporters did.

Posted by: Iz 3rd July 2018, 09:04 PM

Guys, if you think we're being cocky, you're wrong. We're just confused and fluctuating in our approach. One minute we will be full of bravado, the next, self-deprecating to the last. It's a sign of how passionate we can get about football.

Posted by: The Snake 3rd July 2018, 09:06 PM

I feel bad for Colombia too as Houdini does, but Well done to England cheer.gif , I am sure Sweden will make it difficult for England in the next match with their organised defending and quick counterattacks, so England shouldn't underestimate them!

Posted by: Botchia 💡 3rd July 2018, 09:07 PM

That so f***ing tense but I'm ecstatic England broke both the ITV and penalties curse in one match *.* The commentator is right that England definitely needed a penalties win.

The game itself was dreadful though. A return back to the shoddy 2010-14 era England. Panicky, sloppy, lack of attack. Really bad stuff and then to concede an equaliser in the last couple of minutes of injury time is just the cherry on the cake. I hope they learn some big lessons from today because Sweden will be tough. We don't have a good record against them. The only thing better is that it will be more traditional football without the dirty tactics and dramatics that we've seen from Colombia, Tunisia and Panama.

I wouldn’t feel bad for Columbia, they played dirty and got their just desserts. And this is coming from someone who is not an England fan.

I think lower expectations are working in England’s favour. The team do not come across as cocky and actually seem to be working better as a team then they have for years.

Still, I’m getting a little tired of the phrase ‘it’s coming home’ especially when uttered by my students multiple times a day and I have to remind them that, whether they like it or not, they live in Wales and so football certainly isn’t going home to them.

Colombia were dreadful, they displayed a shocking lack of sportsmanship. They definitely deserved to lose as does anyone playing like that.

On the subject of thrashing Sweden, it will be super close imo. If we play like that against Sweden we'll certainly be in trouble!! Really poor stuff. Where were the chances? I could count them on one hand from an entire 120 minutes....

Even given the way they played?

Posted by: Chez Wombat 3rd July 2018, 09:15 PM

I would feel bad for any team that lost, but come on, Colombia's play was really dirty and foul-ridden for the majority of that match, they calmed down admittedly and did have some good shots but were undeniably the worse team in terms of fair play (we weren't perfect in that regard either, but being realistic here). They did not deserve it, and this is coming from someone that was happy Iceland beat England after the way they played in that game.

I don't think it's really cocky to assume that after their performance today that we have a decent chance against Sweden, they weren't particularly good today, granted we weren't particularly good either. They could easily wear us out and we have to be ready for that, but keeping a positive mindset isn't a crime.

You are... aware that 'it's coming home' is as much an ironic meme (albeit stretched to its limit as a humourous device by this point) as anything else, right? Maybe a large portion of deluded people across the country genuinely believe we have an easy ride to the final now but anyone who's looking at it a bit closer and keeping a clear head about that won't start really believing it until the semis.

If that's the case then fair enough but it doesn't appear to be ironic. It just sets England up for relentless banter if/when they get knocked out, it's a pattern of events that I've seen happen so many times in the past.

God I hope so. Can't stand ITV's coverage, particularly Glenn Hoddle: a candidate for most boring man in Britain.

Posted by: Rooney 3rd July 2018, 09:50 PM

To be fair the 'It's coming home' stuff is a bit of both irony and people believing the emotion. There are some great memes which take the piss out of it.. the Andy Murray one earlier was hilarious.

WHAT A RESULT. Absolutely shite game, two teams cancelled each other out, the only way goals were being scored in the game was through set pieces, which both were. Southgate's subs were horrible. Dier completely killed the rhythm and the midfield was at fault for setting the wheels in motion for allowing Colombia back in the game. Trippier should have done better.. awful to concede a goal then when you have your posts covered.

What a fantastic set of penalties from England though... I thought Henderson's was decent and was a really good save from Ospina. I didn't fancy him to score one though, he's nowhere near them for Liverpool usually and we're no gifted with excellent penalty takers. Don't know why Vardy didn't take one? Anyway onwards to Sweden whuch will be a difficult game, but while England lack creativity we are solid, hard to beat and good from set pieces.

My deep down feeling is that I'm still having to blink and pinch to check we're actually in the quarters. This is entering unfamiliar territory now. The last few tournaments, we've been eliminated well before where most people have our expectations set at. The banter quotient is much higher when you lose earlier compared to where you were expected to perform. Hereonout, it's all good.

It won't happen in this day and age, it's only happened once before in a very different TV climate.

And then from a business perspective, ITV would be gifting away their biggest potential ad revenue this century perhaps even of all time given inflation?! No business in their right mind would agree to that and I'd be gobsmacked if they did.

Apparently it's only a gentleman's agreement and not legally binding so there would be nothing to stop the semi being shown on both channels, despite what they've agreed before.

I've a feeling the gentlemen's agreement dates from after Euro '96. Therefore, it hasn't yet been tested by England eating as far as a semi-final. I assume ITV will have first pick of the semi-finals. Therefore, they will not be happy if the BBC went ahead and showed both matches if England get that far. After all, the majority of the audience is almost bound to watch the BBC coverage (even if they inflict Mark Lawrenson on us) which would mean ITV potentially losing a lot of advertising revenue.

I thought that England, for the first hour, we’re very solid defensively (which is something I never thought I’d say) but then the wheels fell off in that last half an hour. drama.gif

I literally only watched Dier’s penalty, all the rest I looked at looked at the floor! laugh.gif

I think people are being a bit too harsh on England’s performance; it was one of our better performances in the last few years and Colombia were incredibly dirty in their play. I think it’ll be a nice, even match between us and Sweden, close like it was this.

I had a bet on England to win 1-0 with Harry Kane to score a penalty in the second half so was absolutely devastated when we conceded in the 93rd minute!!!! cry.gif

There are a lot of people claiming England were diving all over the place and cheating. Either we're being biased or Colombia were playing very dirty because that's what I saw. Sure Henderson exaggerated the headbutt situation but at the same time, if he hadn't, the referee wouldn't have even noticed, and I don't think VAR is making a point of going back to certain things the referee has missed. I mean, he didn't even go to look at the screen to see the foul.

You can bet your bottom dollar that if the table's were turned and that happened to a Colombian player they would have fallen to the floor like a sack of spuds. Unfortunately while time wasting and cheating is a part of the game, you have to play the dark arts. Why do you think the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona are so successful? Just like Ali when he decided to shake everybodies hand before he went off.. I remember watching a game earlier in the World Cup where the commentators were calling out and opposing team for doing that, yet for Ali it was fine!
