Just something that came to me earlier this morning when I saw the One Kiss video come on TV. Dua looks stunning and really a shining star, and I just was thinking, I never would have predicted that the singer of Blow Your Mind (Mwah) would do any better than a few minor UK top 40 hits and then fade away, or at best, have a Marina and the Diamonds type career as an alternative pop player.

Wondered what everyone else's thoughts were? (Obviously if you didn't discover her until around New Rules, the ball was well rolling by then)

Definitely not

I don't think anyone could have predicted just how major she's become? Especially with all the stop starts before the album, and then the lackluster album launch.

No, I knew there was potential once Be The One came out but I really thought she'd be sort of a Marina/Lana type where she never quite gets that massive hit but is loved online, by the gays etc laugh.gif

First listen of New Rules when the album came out I knew she'd struck gold though!

Yeah 'New Rules' as a pop song really was absolute GENIUS and it definitely elevated her career to the next level, I was gonna say 'saved' but I suppose she was doing ok enough before that and the album went top 5 without New Rules. I like her but she still doesn't seem like a big #1 pop girl to me, like it's easy to forget this time last year Lost In Your Light was coming out laugh.gif

I never had such high expectations for her, even when I first heard New Rules as an album track. I was hoping it would be a cute post-album hit to help it sell a few more copies. It was the music video that truly showed her off as a potential global star and it's clear to see why it blew up like it did!

Never would have anticipated this! Pre-New Rules release, I liked Dua, but I wasn't even particularly rooting for her to become a big pop girl. The New Rules video opened my eyes to her having more potential than I'd initially given her credit for.

Same as pretty much everyone else tbh, pre-New Rules (more the video tbh) I kinda just expected her to be one of those forum faves with songs like Be The One and Hotter Than Hell, would never in a MILLION years have seen her becoming the global smash she is, she really just didn't give off that vibe, but boy am I glad she exploded

It's still so weird how big she is now. After Be The One flopped the first time around I thought she was going to have a really hard time

I felt like they'd spent about a year trying so hard to make her happen and nobody really cared, then around the time of 'Lost In Your Light' I thought it was most likely she'd just fade away or have feature hits.

It's weird - Anne-Marie, Zara and Dua have all had fairly similar career trajectory's, getting one big hit (Lush Life / Be The One / Ciao Adios) and then flopping badly with the follow up (So Good / Lost In Your Light / Heavy) before turning it around almost seemlessly with their next release (Symphony / FRIENDS / New Rules).

I didn't anticipate her being huge, I thought she'd be about the same level as Anne-Marie is right now at best. I still find it mad that I've actually met her and had a conversation with her just after she released 'Hotter Than Hell'.

Speaking of Anne-Marie, here’s her chart success so far in comparison to Dua’s.

It’s so bizarre how big she’s become. Anne-Marie has had a steady climb and is only now just starting to get big success.

Also, what was bigger... Rockabye or New Rules? Both will be remembered very well in a decades time.

Anne-Marie
