I remember this being one of the biggest shocks of last year for me, I'd have out Rylance as second favourite for sure but I really was expecting Stallone to take it.
I found this a pretty weak year for supporting actor nominees anyway, I only really liked the top two. 1 Mark Ruffalo 2 Sylvester Stallone 3 Christian Bale 4 Mark Rylance 5 Tom Hardy Ruffalo has been putting in great performances for years now and even in such a strong ensemble cast, he was the person who stood out to me, I really like his 'it could've been you' speech. I haven't seen any of the Rocky films so I'm sure his role in Creed was probably in Stallone's comfort zone but her certainly shone with the screentime he had and left you wanting more. I'm not huge on her Christian Bale really, I feel like he often over-acts or picks eccentric roles all the time, a bit like a better Johnny Depp, but it can get annoying at times and this wasn't his best role really, plus I preferred Carrell and Gosling in the film. I like a very quiet performance from time to time but I found Rylance really boring tbh, his scenes felt like a drag for me. I can't really say much about Tom Hardy as I didn't understand a word he said, they could've nominated so many better performances here! Paul Dano was fantastic in Love & Mercy and I felt myself always wanting to go back to his scenes, Jacob Tremblay really should've been here (can't believe he only got a SAG nomination!) and Del Toro was captivating in Sicario, the ending is incredibly tense thanks to him. I haven't seen Beasts of No Nation but it would've been nice to see him get a nomination. I won't begrudge Tom Hardy as I usually love him as an actor but I really didn't enjoy his performance in The Revenant. |
