Keira Knightley, Mark Ruffalo, James Corden & Adam Levine star
Utterly charming from beginning to end, loved it all the way through. The music is pleasant enough though not the biggest draw, it's all filmed in New York so the location looks great. It's not funny or overly romantic but it's a really nice story with likeable characters (Adam Levine excepted), even Mark Ruffalo is redeemed as it goes along. The ending was sweet but mainly I'm just happy that she didn't get back with Adam Levine. |

I just watched this and I really liked it! I was expecting something like Music and Lyrics (pretty dire film from the 00s starring Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore, in similar positions to Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo's characters) but I was impressed. I actually really enjoyed the music, Keira Knightley has a very nice voice to listen to - I'm amazed that this is her first singing role! James Corden wasn't particularly awful either and Mark Ruffalo grew on me as the film went along. My favourite relationship was Greta's with Violet, the daughter of Dan (Mark Ruffalo's character). I agree that the plot wasn't particularly eventful but the scenery was gorgeous but also made me sad as I was in some of the locations just two weeks ago! Cee Lo's character was slightly irrelevant but I guess Adam Levine got him to join based on their The Voice connection.
I was surprised to read that the film was written and directed by the same person who did Once! Also the songs were written by the actor from that film. Very nice watch overall. |

I saw this just after Christmas and I absolutley loved it. Keira and Mark were both great as usual and I really like James Cordon as well. The music and story was great and I definitely agree with theo about the great relationship between greta and violet
I probably preferred this just over once but I am not sure as I love both of them so much |

Just had the opportunity to watch this for the first time, it's a sensational film - straight into my top 10 favourites ever. The plot does feel quite simple, but that's a big selling point in that you have time to immediately have strong feelings towards characters rather than spending time working out a sophisticated plot. I felt immediately invested in Keira's character and hoping that her project with Mark's character would be a success. And the ending was perfect in standing by what Gretta stood for regarding what she wants from her music.
I have to agree that the character of Violet and her relationship with Gretta was a highlight in the film, and it's reminiscent of another fantastic Keira Knightley film I watched recently where she co-stars with Chloe Grace Moretz ('Laggies' which is also known as 'Say When' in the UK I believe), so I'd recommend checking out that film if you haven't done so yet. I'll definitely be checking out 'Once' now I've seen the connection of that to this film! |
