I’m surprised I couldn’t find a topic for this at all (hopefully I tried hard enough).
This was classic Thursday Night watching. Shonda completely owned Thursday Night TV at one point. Grey’s, How To Get Away With Murder and Scandal.

I know probably more than a few of you have watched this. I’m doing a rewatch now - just up to Season 2.

I’ve toyed with rewatching a few times, I remember Seasons 2 and 3 being amazing. I enjoyed it right through to the end, but it did become absolutely unhinged sometime around Season 5.

I’m just about to wrap up Season 2, obviously the big pull this season was the Assassination attempt. I have to say, on a second watch it comes across as… a little half baked?

Yes, it definitely gets quite unhinged by my recollection- I am definitely not looking forward to Olivia’s bunker storyline, whenever that arrives.

I think the issue with any network show in the age of 8-10 episode seasons is dragging a storyline out over even half a season just feels SO SLOW. I rewatched Dynasty a few years ago and they had a doppelgänger storyline across 23 episodes (of a 31 episode season) so it’s all relative innit.

I also think Scandal (and How To Get Away With Murder and Shondaland in general) helped redefine network TV for the latter half of the last decade as well, so we’ve seen bigger/better/flashier takes on it so many times now the original seems weaker in comparison.

The bunker is season 4 I believe, so still a while away. Just wait until the whiplash inducing twists and turns of Season 6/7. You’ve also got to the chance to relive the point at which EVERY. CHARACTER. AND. EVERY. LINE. OF. DIALOGUE. Becomes a grandstanding monologue.

I still felt Season 2 was so underwhelming. The larger storyline was the vote fixing, but this storyline became so uninteresting with too many plot turns. It was a simple concept, a few thousand votes in some small hick town were stolen. From here it just evolved into this mishmash of code names.

They also took a step back from what Olivia did with her firm and I thought that was a big mistake.
Trying to fit the assassination attempt in with the voting fix (although I understand why) was the wrong move. It should have been a completely separate storyline from everything else.

I also felt that Fitz/Olivia were off this season. They had some great scenes, but they really lacked that raw animal attraction they had Season 1.

I say this all in stark contrast to the first few episodes of Season 3. Wow. They solved for all of these things. They pretty much packed more interesting storylines into the first 3 episodes this season compared to all of Season 2. Olivia’s name being leaked, then not. Lisa Kudrow! And, thankfully. A lot less Jake (can’t stand the character). I just got to the Millie Sexual Assault storyline.

I've been craving a rewatch of Scandal from start to finish recently, I must get round to it. Watched it all a few years ago and as it aired first time round. It definitely got wilder and sillier as it went on but it's a testament to the cast and the writing that I was still really invested in it. Kerry Washington is such a powerhouse! Also Mellie is queen.

I'm another one that couldn't stand Jake, glad it's not just me.

Happy to third the “Jake is awful” motion! Worst (main) character by far.
