Australia 2020
Don’t Break Me
Montaigne

Posted by: AdamAloud 1st September 2019, 11:50 AM

After a successful debut this year, Australia Decides is returning to the Gold Coast for 2020! Will they be able to top what was a very strong national selection?

Posted by: J▲hq 1st September 2019, 11:59 AM

I’m so happy that 2019 proved that televoters are still willing to pick up the phone and vote for Australia.

I wonder if we’ll get any returnees in this selection - I’d be up for seeing Sheppard give it another shot (and Courtney Act kink.gif)

Ausralian Idol winner Casey Donovan, and Vanessa Amorosi, revealed as the first two artists!

*cue the shrieks of Liam singing Absolutely Everybody*

^ laugh.gif

But hype!

Posted by: Liаm 7th November 2019, 03:13 PM

VANESSA!!

Casey is a good pick too, fabulous singer who hasn't really had a chance musically for years even though she had the career resurgence winning I'm A Celeb!

Posted by: gooddelta 7th November 2019, 03:15 PM

Yass. Vanessa is one of Australia’s best singers for sure <3

Posted by: Cqmerqn 7th November 2019, 03:58 PM

Can Jessica just rep them again please

Posted by: Liаm 7th November 2019, 07:05 PM

I assume Vanessa's entry is called Gimme Your Love, she's using a song from her album for this and it's the one that happens to clock in at 3:00 laugh.gif I am yet to hear but it is ofc out in Australia.

NF season has officially started guys cry.gif

Posted by: Liаm 9th November 2019, 01:48 AM

I don't think that's a winner sadly but it's a nice little bop from her that I think will grow a lot.

Posted by: gooddelta 9th November 2019, 08:25 AM

I guess she could also just as easily make a quick edit to one of the other tracks, as most of them are only a shade over three minutes long. Need to check it out this week.

Posted by: J▲hq 19th November 2019, 09:46 AM

Next two acts are Mitch Tambo (Australia’s Got Talent) and iOTA (singer/actor who’s done some stage work and had minor roles in The Great Gatsby and Mad Max: Fury Road)

Posted by: Liаm 19th November 2019, 12:55 PM

I'd put money on Mitch having a shot to win this! Ofc we don't know the song but he's got quite the full package, a brilliant voice, stage presence and something a bit different (he mixes contemporary music with the Aboriginal language). When Eurofans shit themselves over Electric Fields as much as they did (or was that just my timeline, it was legit ALL I heard and they all hated Kate MH bc of her winning and not them), just wait til they see Mitch laugh.gif

Posted by: J▲hq 5th December 2019, 06:56 PM

Another two acts, Montaigne and Didirri (the latter appears to be someone that Joseph would enjoy x)

Posted by: gooddelta 5th December 2019, 09:17 PM

Love Montaigne, her music is often used as a soundbed in Neighbours, she’s really quirky and fun.

Posted by: Liаm 5th December 2019, 11:18 PM

Montaigne is fab, this lineup is shaping up amazingly wub.gif

Posted by: LexC 5th December 2019, 11:45 PM

Digging a little deeper into this Mitch Tambo fella and blimey, if they can pull off something similar to his cover of "The Voice" then this could be another Aussie slam-dunk!

Posted by: J▲hq 16th December 2019, 01:49 PM

The line-up is complete! Diana Rouvas (The Voice Australia 2019 winner), Jack Vidgen (Australia's Got Talent 2011 & The Voice AU 2019 contestant), Jordan-Ravi and Jaguar Jonze are the final acts. Jordan-Ravi will be singing a song called "Pushing Stars" and Jack Vidgen will be singing "I Am King I Am Queen", which is out now!

Hmm, quite poor.

Posted by: Cameron 16th December 2019, 05:07 PM

Jack's vocals sound different to how they did on The Voice. This sounds like a 'Don't Come Easy' rip-off - a very similar melody.

Posted by: Liаm 16th December 2019, 05:49 PM

Diana is fab, looking forward to her!

Jack's voice doesn't usually irk me but it goes right through me on that song :/ Very poor.

Posted by: LexC 16th December 2019, 10:09 PM

That sounded like every Sam Smith song from the last four years put in a blender (and I can hear the Don't Come Easy comparisons as well!) - not massively impressed by that one.

5 more entries out today!

I expected more from Mitch's song sad.gif It's good but I feel like the only thing it has to distinguish it from so many other songs is the splash of Gamilaraay language lyrics, the chorus is quite weak and it's the same old message we get from a lot of songs which have those token Eurovision themes if you aren't sure what to write laugh.gif I think Proud is my fave of these, Casey will bring the vox *.* Can We Make Heaven is pretty good too but it's missing something, it'd pop off that bit more with a key change gospel choir or sth nearer the end.

Idk if I get great vibes in terms of Eurovision success from any of these sad.gif

Posted by: J▲hq 17th January 2020, 04:35 PM

Definitely expected more from Mitch, the English lyrics sound very generic, but it's 'nice' (as are the rest of the fresh songs)

Really hoping one of the final three acts that we haven't heard from can pull something out of the bag, because last year had such a unique/stand-out top 2, it'll be a shame if nothing this year pushes the boundaries in quite the same way (I have a good feeling that either Jaguar Jonze or Montaigne could deliver what we need)

Posted by: J▲hq 27th January 2020, 10:36 PM

Vanessa has confirmed on Twitter that “Lessons Of Love” is her entry.

Posted by: LexC 27th January 2020, 10:47 PM

Pressure's on for Jaguar Jonze and Montaigne to really bring something unique as the rest of this lineup is not sparking much joy. 'Proud' is the best of the bunch but even that's just a really good version of a style we've seen before a hundred times.

Part of the reason why Zero Gravity and 2000 and Whatever were so memorable was because they were so off the wall so it seems a shame that everyone else seems to be playing it safe so far.

Posted by: Liаm 28th January 2020, 12:55 PM

Lessons Of Love is one of the last options I'd have chosen for Vanessa ffs laugh.gif I'm sure she'll rock the vocals live but without a revamp (other than cutting the required 11 seconds for Eurovision) the song won't stand out.

I agree about playing it safe, I know nothing about Jaguar Jonze but I've got a good feeling about Montaigne in that regard. Fingers crossed!! Everything so far is pretty much what you'd expect from each artist (of the ones I knew beforehand), which isn't a bad thing for some of them but none of them stick out as being songs that will do that well. In fact I feel like a good few of them might struggle to qualify!

Posted by: J▲hq 29th January 2020, 11:21 AM

"Rabbit Hole" by Jaguar Jonze is now https://www.triplejunearthed.com/artist/jaguar-jonze

I'm disappointed, the rest of the song shows promise but for me the chorus is a bit of a non-event

At this stage I think my pick would be Vanessa, and we now have the Eurovision cut of her entry!

Posted by: Liаm 29th January 2020, 12:16 PM

Ah that sounds better, little bit more oomph. Doesn't seem like much but a production flourish does make all the difference! Definitely my pick to win so far, I guess it's up to Montaigne to bring something a bit crazy which is what this NF is missing for sure.

Posted by: gooddelta 29th January 2020, 01:50 PM

It's a decent track, as it stands I'd love to see Vanessa get the ticket. I guess she still has a lot of goodwill in Australia too, but so do a lot of the other artists in this line-up.

I think the juries would probably score it quite well too, if only because her vocals are insane, though I'm not sure it would do a huge amount in the televote.

I think it's Montaigne's to lose at this point, if she turns up with something wonderfully quirky and standout like most of her other material then it will have no problem standing out in the national final. And Aus won't mind taking a risk on something leftfield after Kate took them back to the top 10.

Posted by: Liаm 29th January 2020, 05:21 PM

I can see it being between Casey/Vanessa/Montaigne (her entry is called Don't Break Me and is out on Friday), depending on what the latter brings but as said if it's anything like her usual material I can't see why she won't do it! Vanessa and Casey both have insane vocals, are popular in Aus (Casey won I'm A Celeb a couple of years ago plus always seems to pop up on TV and ofc Vanessa is a a legend) and we can trust they'll bring it. I thought Mitch could have done it, but the track just isn't good enough.

Next year I need her to do a 12 track album of 3 ish Minute songs.

Perform 6 on one night, 6 on the next. Top 3 from each go to the final. 6 song final and the gays are given everything we want and Australia wins Eurovision.

Posted by: Hector 30th January 2020, 12:38 PM

Judging from this snippet Montaigne's song is INSANE! wub.gif

Posted by: J▲hq 31st January 2020, 02:36 PM

I don't think it's especially crazy or quirky, but it's very good regardless. I'd go with this, and Vanessa as my back-up choice.

Posted by: gooddelta 31st January 2020, 02:46 PM

Yeah I was surprised that it's quite 'big modern Eurovision ballad' rather than something a little more out there. My head is with Montaigne but my heart is with Vanessa, even though she'd probably end up on the bottom half of the scoreboard at Eurovision. Hard to tell how Montaigne would do but I'd be surprised if she did any better than Kate did.

Posted by: LexC 31st January 2020, 04:55 PM

I think I would probably go with Vanessa as well since they'll at least be able to lean in to the "power ballad with insane vocals" jury votes that are out there and let the televote be what it will be (because frankly I don't think any of these 10 songs are magnetic enough to overcome Australia's natural televote handicap).

Posted by: Liаm 31st January 2020, 11:37 PM

Montaigne's song is v good, I'd put it about on a par with Lessons Of Love but I wanted more from her sad.gif I don't think they've got a song in this bunch that would go left hand of the scoreboard, maybe Montaigne just about... Definitely has to be Vanessa or Montaigne and get some strong jury support seeing as the televote is always gonna be Australia's downfall.

Posted by: Liаm 1st February 2020, 12:20 AM

Ok scratch that I love it after a couple more listens laugh.gif I still want Vanessa at Eurovision but DBM is a brilliant song.

Part of me thinks something random is gonna win this and Aus will flop.

Posted by: Sinner 4th February 2020, 10:29 PM

LIL is such a tired Sia style thing. DBMD has a lot more going for it. Not sure it would connect with enough televoters, though.

Posted by: Liаm 4th February 2020, 10:33 PM

I worry DBM could be one of those slightly alternative "shock" DNQs that the fans seem to love and just don't connect with the televoting audience for whatever reason sad.gif

Posted by: Liаm 6th February 2020, 01:33 PM

Running order is out:

01 iOTA
02 Jordan-Ravi
03 Jaguar Jonze
04 Jack Vigden
05 Vanessa Amorosi
06 Diana Rouvas
07 Mitch Tambo
08 Casey Donovan
09 Montaigne
10 Didirri

Montaigne seems set as the bookies' fave, but Vanessa is shortening in 3rd with Mitch in between them.

Posted by: RobBot 7th February 2020, 11:16 AM

Having heard them all, Don't Break Me is the only competitive song here imo. Not a great selection.

Posted by: gooddelta 7th February 2020, 01:39 PM

I'm conflicted. Montaigne's song is probably slightly better than Vanessa's, but I don't love it enough to switch my allegiance to her from Vanessa. I also think that Don't Break Me would only be competitive enough to come mid-table at Eurovision, whereas Vanessa could well manage that as well if the jury support is strong enough for her spectacular vocals.

Last year, Sheppard were my favourite act in the line-up by a mile but I was more than happy to back Kate as Zero Gravity was the better song/package. I don't feel like Montaigne ultimately has that same edge over Vanessa, but I imagine she'll still probably win as it does sound bigger.

Posted by: Liаm 7th February 2020, 07:40 PM

Aussievision did a jury final exit poll of 200 votes.... Lessons of Love won by quite some way, 58 votes to Proud and I Am King I Am Queen's 30 with Don't Break Me on 19! Ofc it's a small sample, but it might an interesting sign of how the live performances might change things, given that they've seen the live performances.

Posted by: LexC 7th February 2020, 07:55 PM

From what I've seen, I think Montaigne mostly performs to a handheld/steadycam during the performance so isn't the best number to watch in the hall which would explain the relatively poor performance in that poll (if it's even representative).

Still think Vanessa is their best bet as somebody who can elevate their raw materials with a 5 star performance.

MONTAIGNE WON YAAASS

Posted by: Cqmerqn 8th February 2020, 12:11 PM

Yassss!!

Posted by: Lukuzz 8th February 2020, 12:11 PM

Them vocals though so need work

Posted by: gooddelta 8th February 2020, 12:12 PM

Really good entry. No idea how it will do at Eurovision though, I don’t expect it to be a huge televote scorer.

Surprised Casey won the public vote though not sure why, she wins every public vote she’s a part of. Glad Proud isn’t going to Eurovision though, I love Casey but the song is only ok.

I was surprised for a second but then I'm like no it's Casey ofc she did laugh.gif Paired with a great vocal, she is just such a lovable person and very popular although ofc it is a SONG contest so I'm glad she couldn't win.

I've got no idea about DBM too, love it personally but I could see it being either a shock DNQ or one of those that scrape qualifies due to jury and doesn't make it too far up the right of the scoreboard, but I think Lessons Of Love and Proud probably would have done about the same, perhaps Lessons Of Love would have done a bit better with juries to elevate her that bit more. I'm sad Vanessa won't be going to Eurovision but DBM was the best song.

Posted by: J▲hq 8th February 2020, 12:18 PM

I thought Vanessa had easily the most polished, Eurovision-ready performance, but “Don’t Break Me” is the best song so I would’ve been happy either way. The performance looked a bit messy but I’m confident that Australia can tidy it up like they did with Kate.

Posted by: Cqmerqn 8th February 2020, 12:30 PM

Omg Dami Im is competing in Aus Decides next year!!

Posted by: J▲hq 8th February 2020, 12:35 PM

Yeah, I don’t see why anyone else needs to bother showing up! laugh.gif

Posted by: I. :II: z 8th February 2020, 12:37 PM

I think I'd have preferred Vanessa.

I can see Montaigne doing well and it's a fine song but the idea of it bores me.

Posted by: LexC 8th February 2020, 12:38 PM

I agree "Don't Break Me" has potential to really SLAP in Rotterdam but it needs work. Given this is the same team that produced that transformation in Zero Gravity's staging I'm fairly confident that they can do that BUT they are in what seems to be the tougher semi so this could really go either way.

Given Norway's in the same Semi I think Vanessa could have been crowded out by Ulrikke on the ballad front and Destiny on the vocals front (we assume at this point!) so that was probably an accidentally wise decision.

Posted by: Cameron 8th February 2020, 01:34 PM

Tbf next year they can just do internal since they know Dami wants to return

Posted by: Liаm 8th February 2020, 03:28 PM

Nobody should even turn up if it's gonna be Dami they're against laugh.gif

Posted by: ScottyEm 8th February 2020, 03:56 PM

It looks like they’ve tried to rescue a so-so pop song with an interesting look. The performance looked messy and not believable. It needs a lot of work. Must’ve been a poor show all round if this clinched it?

Posted by: Colm 8th February 2020, 09:58 PM

Best song won. Hopefully they can work on the performance without losing her individual style too much.

Posted by: Martyn 8th February 2020, 10:40 PM

Did Mans seem a bit off during the performance? I thought he was maybe drunk at first.

It will be interesting to see if Dami Im does come back next year. If she does I suspect the show will be picking a song for her from 10.

Posted by: Dexton 9th February 2020, 04:13 PM

Loveee Montaigne for this! Some genuine Aussie representation, would've also loved Didirri too. Hopefully Thelma Plum can be in the running next year she has an amazing voice and would be perfect

What would have been Australia's staging concept!
