Last month marked 5 years since the UK Remix EP for 'Turn Up the Music' was released, the third and final single from MDNA. 'Turn Up the Radio' was one of the three songs produced by Martin Solveig that made the MDNA album. Solveig had originally intended the song to appear on his own album Smash with vocals from Jade Williams, better known as Sunday Girl but, after the song was shelved in favour of their other collaboration 'Let's Not Play Games', the song was put forward to Madonna. She accepted the song and re-wrote the lyrics, with the production also slightly altered. 'Turn Up the Radio' was highly praised by critics - most considered the song more worthy of being lead single over 'Give Me All Your Luvin'' - which appeared to secure the decision to make it a future single. A video was shot in June and released in July, with a remix EP available to download from August. However, with Madonna now on tour and following an already disastrous handling of the era, 'Turn Up the Radio' barely charted anywhere, including an abysmal #175 in the UK. It did, however, become Madonna's 43rd #1 on the US Dance Club Songs chart. |

The video, for me, is potentially her very worst. I hate how it tries to be all 'Drowned World' at the beginning and just fails miserably at capturing an ounce of the authenticity or emotion of that. Not a fan of her styling at all and don't get me started on that hideous filter and blurred edges. I find the song can be quite catchy at times but this video just sucks any glimmer of fun the song may hold.
Really surprised at how critically applauded the song was though. I said the song was catchy and I can see why people would like it, but the production is still incredibly faceless and the lyrics are awful, yet you've got critics saying things like it's the best since 'Hung Up' and daring to suggest its somehow reminiscent of 'Ray of Light'! |

I never liked on the radio much, thought it was a bit bland and faceless. It is fairly catchy to give the song its dues I guess. I loved Gang bang, Like a sinner and Girl gone wild on that album.

It's fairly unremarkable. I vaguely enjoy it.

I wonder what Madonna would have wanted to release as a single. I know she has said she really liked Solveig's sound and no doubt really enjoyed the songs of his that made the album, but I feel like 'Turn Up the Radio' apparently being a fan fave from the start and being critically well-received, as well as sounding very inoffensive, was the main reason it was chosen to be a single in attempt at saving the era, rather than because Madonna saw it as a single herself.
I just fail to understand how 'Gang Bang' was just ignored when it had so much potential for a fantastic video. Songs like 'I'm a Sinner' or 'Love Spent' would have given so much potential for great imagery and ideas too. Madonna's proven time and time again she still has brilliant visual concepts so I can't see her backing to play it safe with a song like 'Turn Up the Radio' which is just so incredibly faceless. |
