We're now out of the usual quiet Summer season for UK TV, in which most of the channels resort to cheap factual or repeats. But September brings with it the return of effort! I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread to post/discuss any commissioning news for Autumn and beyond.

Here's some recent commissioning news from the BBC

The Serpent | 8x60' | BBC One | Drama

BBC One has commissioned new eight-part drama series The Serpent, a brand new original drama written by Richard Warlow (Ripper Street) based on the phenomenal true story of how one of the most elusive criminals of the 20th century was caught and brought to trial. The series will be directed by Tom Shankland (The Missing) and produced by Mammoth Screen (Poldark).

Con man, escape artist, thief, master of disguise and psychopath, Charles Sobhraj was the chief suspect in the sensational unsolved murders of up to 20 young Western travellers across India, Thailand and Nepal through 1975 and 1976. Having slipped repeatedly from the grasp of authorities worldwide, by 1976 Sobhraj was Interpol's most wanted man and had arrest warrants on three different continents.

The Three | 8x60' | BBC One | Drama

Based on the trilogy of books by Sarah Lotz, it will be adapted by Golden Globe winner Peter Straughan (Wolf Hall, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and is a multi-stranded international thriller with a supernatural twist. Commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, and Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, The Three will be executive produced by Kate Sinclair and George Faber for The Forge, and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for the BBC.

Four planes crash on the same day in four different countries. Three children miraculously survive...

Elspeth Martin, a no-nonsense crash investigator with the NTSB in Washington, is under pressure to find out what caused the crashes. A rationalist, she is dogged in her determination to get at the truth, but this process is obstructed by conflicting evidence, media scrutiny and conspiracy theories.

Then there are rumours that a fourth child has survived one of the crashes, and a mysterious message is discovered on a passenger’s mobile phone.

The Button | 8x30' | BBC One | Game Show

The 8 x 30 minute game show, which can arrive in any home around the country, will visit five families or friends each week and place a talking button at the heart of their front room where the teams face spontaneous challenges against the clock to win a cash prize.

The teams must keep a beady eye on the button which turns from green to red when it’s time to play. They miss it at their peril as it’s a race against the clock to hit the button and start the game. The Button delivers the task they must complete in the quickest time, interacts with them, and also reveals their rival teams on screen and the results.

All Together Now | 6xTBA' | BBC One | Light Entertainment

Hosted by comedian Rob Beckett, each episode sees a range of talented performers (solos and groups) take to the stage to perform in front of The 100, an audience of great singers with big voices and even bigger opinions. If any of The 100 like what they hear, they stand up and join in. The greater the number that stand up and sing along, the higher the contestant’s score.

Featuring big name music talent as part of The 100, the series comprises of five hour-long heats. Each contestant is battling to convince as many of The 100 as possible to lend them their voices. The 100 are made up of specially cast members of the public all with singing credentials, from right across the UK. With a real mix of musical backgrounds, the singer will be confronted with 100 people all with something to say - tough crowds don't get any tougher.

Come Home | 3x60' | BBC One | Drama

Produced by RED Production Company for BBC One, this compelling drama explores the messy realities of parenthood, marriage and what happens when a mother switches the reset button on her life.

Set and filmed in Northern Ireland, the drama will focus on a family reeling; from mother Marie, played by Paula Malcomson (Ray Donovan, Broken) who has made the hardest decision of her life, to her bereft husband Greg, played by Christopher Eccleston (The A Word, Fortitude) and their three children.

and from ITV...

Crime and Punishment Season | ITV | Factual

AN HOUR TO CATCH A KILLER: Presented by Sir Trevor McDonald, with innovative access to the Northumbria homicide team, An Hour To Catch A Killer takes viewers to the heart of the all-important window of time that can make or break a murder investigation – the ‘Golden Hour’. This principle, outlined in British Police’s Murder Investigation Manual, describes how the decisions detectives make during that first hour impact on whether or not they catch the killer.

GORDON ON COCAINE (w/t): his two-part film shows Gordon Ramsay as viewers have never seen him before, stripping away the veneer of cocaine’s glamorous image to expose how behind the powder many Brits consume as part of a night out lies a trail of criminality, cruelty and death driving its global trade. Britain is the biggest consumer of cocaine in Europe and in Gordon’s own business, the restaurant trade, it’s rife. He’s witnessed it wreck the careers of colleagues and tragically he lost his close friend and chef protégé to a cocaine overdose in 2003.

ROSS KEMP IN JAIL – INSIDE BARLINNIE: With unprecedented access, Ross Kemp immerses himself in prison life at the sharp end in HMP Barlinnie in Glasgow, the iconic prison that has served the city for almost 150 years. Shot over seven days with Ross, the film sees him meeting both prisoners and prison officers to taste what it’s like to serve time and work inside walls which have a dark past, as he discovers stories of the executions and the violent siege which have earned the jail its tough reputation.

SERIAL KILLER WITH PIERS MORGAN: In an extraordinary and chilling film, Piers Morgan enters Florida’s maximum security Blackwater Prison to interview one of America’s most vicious and cunning killers, Mark Reibe. He has confessed to the abduction and murder of thirteen young women but then suddenly withdrew his confession. So how many did he really kill? Reibe is serving life for the murder of one woman Donna Callaghan, but police are convinced he killed many more. In a tense head-to-head, Reibe tries to manipulate Piers with his lies as he is challenged to finally tell the truth.

THE MURDER OF BECKY WATTS – INSIDE THE INVESTIGATION: When 16 year old Becky Watts went missing in 2015, it sparked a major police investigation and dominated headlines nationwide. Everyone was desperate to find the missing teenager. But only two people knew where she was – Becky’s stepbrother Nathan, and his girlfriend Shauna.

Your Song | 1x60' | ITV | Music

Your Song, hosted by Emma Willis, to air on ITV this autumn. Syco Entertainment and Thames (part of FremantleMedia UK) are to produce a new music show for ITV, it has been announced. Your Song will air in a prime-time slot on ITV this autumn and will feature a host of music’s biggest stars. The 1 x 60’ special will celebrate the lives of real people who have done something extraordinary – and see them being given the performance of a life-time from some of their favourite artists. Your Song will be hosted by the inimitable Emma Willis, whose credits include The Voice UK and Big Brother.

The Bromans | 8x60' | ITV 2 | Game Show

Eight 21st century lads are to be transported back to the Roman Empire to see if they can cut it as gladiators. Bromans is a brand new 8 x 60 reality game show from Electric Ray which will be broadcast on ITV2 later this year. The handsome boys will fight it out with help from their loving girlfriends. They may have the muscles but do these lads have what it takes to go down in history? Cameras will follow eight modern day couples as they're transported to an ancient world where they'll live and fight like gladiators did 2000 years ago.

Is All Together Now serious?!? That sounds so awfully bad!! At least Pitch Battle was a good idea, just not something that would be popular in today's TV.

Also, Gordon on Cocaine is so badly titled :')

Your Song seems to be following This Time Next Year & Suprise Suprise in ITV feelgood TV, nice to see Emma get another primetime credit to her name.

ITV have re-commissioned The Nightly Show Late Night Live, a show that will run after the news every night for five weeks in October! The host is yet to be confirmed.

QUOTE(Radio Times)
The broadcaster is preparing to air a new strand provisionally called Late Night Live after the 10pm news this autumn.

Airing every weeknight for five weeks from the start of October, the show will focus on the news but with a more serious bent, it is understood.

“Think BBC’s This Week, but with an ITV twist,” said a source.

Presenting names are being kept a closely guarded secret but it is thought that Andrew Neil, who stepped down as the presenter of the BBC’s Sunday Politics last month, is a potential target.

Neil is said to be in the process of renegotiating his contract with the BBC where he presents Daily Politics and This Week. ITV declined to comment on the speculation.

The move appears to be part of an attempt by ITV controller of programmes Kevin Lygo to improve the channel’s late night performance, which led to the disastrous experiment with The Nightly Show earlier this year.

Airing over eight weeks in the 10pm news slot – which shunted the daily bulletin to later in the evening – the topical entertainment format was hosted by a range of performers including John Bishop, David Walliams and Gordon Ramsay but performed disastrously in the ratings.

Lygo told the Edinburgh Television Festival that The Nightly Show would not be returning to 10pm but said that he might still bring the show back in a later time slot, although he sounded highly doubtful: “Certainly, not at 10 o’clock. The challenge is can it work for us later, that sort of thing. I don’t know.”

He added: "Did it work? Not really.

“There’s a million reasons [why]. With hindsight, a different host every week made it very difficult for the production team.

“The theory was that if you build the show there would be these fun people you would slot in each week. What happened of course, on week four you’d have a new host who would come on and say ‘I’m not doing that’ and you’d have to reinvent the show."

However, despite Lygo’s complaints, it is understood that Late Night Live is also considering the possibility of rotating hosts each week.

The move of the 10pm news met with stiff opposition from ITV’s news provider ITN who believed that the move demeaned the brand and gave the BBC's 10pm bulletin a free run while failing to improve the ratings performance in the slot.

I'm surprised they're bothering tbh! The Nightly Show was hardly a success so can't see this doing better in a later slot!

Bromans is one of those shows that sounds like it will be one of the worst ideas ever, but will deliver incredibly strong ratings for ITV2. A bit like the revived Love Island, really.

BBC One daytime has commissioned a new show called Shakespeare & Hathaway starring Jo Joyner and Mark Benton.

QUOTE
BBC Daytime announces today that Mark Benton and Jo Joyner will play the lead characters in a new BBC One daytime detective drama, Shakespeare & Hathaway - Private Investigators.
The ten-part drama from BBC Studios, created by Paul Matthew Thompson and Jude Tindall, will see Frank Hathaway (Benton), a hardboiled private investigator, and his rookie sidekick Lu Shakespeare (Joyner) form the unlikeliest of partnerships as they investigate the secrets of rural Warwickshire’s residents.

Beneath the picturesque charm lies a hotbed of mystery and intrigue: extramarital affairs, celebrity stalkers, missing police informants, care home saboteurs, rural rednecks and murderous magicians, embezzling accountants and abducted au pairs, blackmail, comp claims and custody cases, all-night stake-outs and professional hits. Our odd couple of detectives will put the world to rights as they snoop and pry. They disagree on almost everything, yet somehow, together, they make a surprisingly effective team. Although they would never admit it.
Meanwhile ITV has announced Guess The Star

QUOTE
Legendary broadcaster Jonathan Ross is to host a brand new one off game show for ITV.

Guess The Star combines celebrity performances with iconic disguises and a great ‘play along at home’ guessing game.

Joining Jonathan are three celebrity teams, Team Diversity, Jordan Banjo, Perri Kiely and Sam Craske, Team Coronation Street, Anthony Cotton, Catherine Tyldesley and Sally Dynevor and Team Daytime Eamonn Holmes, Stacey Solomon, Judge Rinder who will be competing against each other to try and guess the famous face hidden under the guises.

Well known stars will be transformed and perform as their favourite pop or music star as the three celebrity teams are challenged to Guess The Star behind the iconic disguise. Each well-known personality will undergo a total makeover in order to flummox the competitors. They will mime to a pop classic in a bid to emulate their heroes. Meanwhile, the three teams, aided by a couple of helpful clues, compete against each other to Guess The Star.

The news that no one wanted....Sam Smith at the BBC...

QUOTE
BBC Music today announces a world-exclusive hour-long entertainment show Sam Smith At The BBC, for BBC One this autumn, presented by Fearne Cotton.
Oscar and Grammy Award-winning Sam Smith will perform new tracks from his eagerly awaited new album and classic tracks, accompanied by his band and the BBC Concert Orchestra, as well as talking about his career, music and his life to date.

The one-off 60-minute special from BBC Studios, filmed in front of a live studio audience, will be broadcast in November and will include songs Sam has never previously performed before for a TV audience.

Sam says: “I'm so honoured and thankful to the BBC for giving me this opportunity to showcase some of my new music from my album in this amazing, intimate setting. I can't wait to sing some old songs and have a big old sing along with everyone.”

Sam has amassed an array of prestigious accolades including a Golden Globe and an Academy Award for Best Original Song (Writing’s On The Wall), four Grammys, three BRIT Awards, six Mobo Awards and two Guinness World Records. Sam’s multi-platinum selling album In The Lonely Hour has sold over 12.4m copies globally, breaking records in America as the highest first week sales for a UK male artist’s debut album. His new single Too Good At Goodbyes went to number one in its first week making it his sixth number one single in the UK.

Fearne says: “As I’ve adored Sam’s voice since he performed on Radio 1’s Live Lounge in 2015, I jumped at the chance to present this show. I can’t wait to see him again, watch him perform new and old tracks and chat to him about his music and life.”

Sam Smith At The BBC follows in the footsteps of Adele At The BBC and Michael Bublé At The BBC, both BBC Studios productions.

Broadcast in November 2015, Adele At The BBC, presented by Graham Norton, was nominated for Best Entertainment Programme at the Bafta Awards. A sketch within the programme, which saw Adele impersonate herself, broke the BBC YouTube channel record by gaining over 60 million views. Harry Styles At The BBC will be broadcast in November on BBC One.

Bob Shennan, Director of BBC Radio and Music says: “Placing music centre stage on television remains one of BBC Music’s aims as supporting a range of burgeoning and established acts, and I’m very happy that we’re able to bring Sam to BBC One for what promises to be a very special show.”

Guy Freeman, Editor, Special Events and Formats, BBC Studios says: “I’m delighted that Sam is the next superstar in this series. These shows create a world in which artists like Sam feel incredibly comfortable and can simply have fun and reveal more of themselves to viewers than is ever normally possible. It promises to be a great hour in the company of an outstanding performer.”

BBC Worldwide is the international distributor for the title.

A new comedy is coming to BBC One called Mister Winner:

QUOTE
Following a successful pilot, broadcast as part of the Comedy Playhouse earlier this year, Mister Winner is set to return to BBC One for a six-part series in 2018. It stars Spencer Jones (Upstart Crow, Tim Vine Travels Through Time) as the ironically named Leslie Winner, who despite all the best intentions is forever finding himself in disastrous situations.
Leslie was last seen winning the heart, and hand in marriage, of his girlfriend Jemma Smith (Aimee-Ffion Edwards - Detectorists, Peaky Blinders), but not before his elaborate plan to propose from within a shark tank took a turn for the worse!

The pilot also featured Jemma’s parents, the anxious and hot-headed Chris (Shaun Williamson - EastEnders, Extras), who tried to control his anger through children’s colouring books, and his calm and optimistic wife of 30 years, Teresa (Dorothy Atkinson - Call The Midwife, Mum). While supportive of their daughter’s relationship, Leslie’s many mishaps took their toll, especially when he accidentally electrocuted Chris’ beloved koi carp. What more could possibly go wrong in the series for a man named Winner?

Spencer Jones says: "The pilot episode was one of the best times I've ever had on set, so I cannot wait to get stuck in again with such a brilliant, funny, and talented group of actors. Thanks very much to the BBC for getting behind us, and championing a show we all hope people will laugh at and love."

Shaun Williamson says: “I am very excited to be part of the upcoming series of 'Mister Winner' written by the brilliant Matt Morgan. We had had so much fun filming the pilot with so many talented people and I can’t wait to get stuck in to the series.”
We are in desperate need of a good comedy so here's hoping this could be one.

Meanwhile ITV have announced a new drama starring Kate Beckinsale called The Widow:

QUOTE
Kate Beckinsale takes leading role in ITV and Amazon Prime Video Drama, The Widow, from acclaimed writers Harry and Jack Williams

Internationally renowned film star, Kate Beckinsale, will star in ITV’s original limited series drama, The Widow, which will be produced in conjunction with Amazon Prime Video and written by Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA nominated screenwriters Harry and Jack Williams (Liar, The Missing).

Kate Beckinsale has proven to be one of the industry’s most versatile and charismatic performers. Beckinsale recently wrapped production on Farming, the directorial debut from Nigerian-British writer-director Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, opposite Damson Idris and Gugu Mbatha-Raw. She most recently starred in the Marc Webb drama The Only Living Boy in New York opposite Jeff Bridges, Callum Turner, and Kiersey Clemons, which was released by Amazon Studios. Prior to that, she starred in Amazon Studios’ comedy Love & Friendship, directed by Whit Stillman and based on Jane Austen’s novel Lady Susan, for which she won the Evening Standard Award, the London Film Critics Circle Award and was nominated for a Critics’ Choice Award for her performance. She is also known for her starring role in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.

In The Widow Kate will play Georgia Wells who has her life turned upside-down with a phone-call in the middle of the night. Her husband of over 10 years, Will, has been reported dead after a plane crash in the Congolese jungle.

Three years later, with her old life now a thing of the past, Georgia learns something shocking. Something that will take her to Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, looking to uncover the truth about his disappearance.

Still haunted by the past, Georgia is grieving for the man she loved and the life they’ve lost, but she hasn’t given up hope.

When was the last really successful new sitcom on BBC1 or ITV? The BBC continue to make some comedies that are successful on BBC2 - Twenty Twelve and its successor W1A were brilliant. Still Open All Hours has been successful on BBC1 but it doesn't really count as new - even though there have now been more episodes of the revamp than the Ronnie Barker original.

ITV's really struggled with sitcoms in the 21st Century, there's only a handful that I can think of that actually aired, and in terms of ones that have been successful, the only one that springs to mind is "Vicious", although then again it may only seem so due to the strong profile of the two main leads (Ian McKellen & Derek Jacobi).

As for BBC1, you'd probably have to go as far back as Mrs Brown's Boys, which continues to dominate to this day - although then again even though it started in 2010 on BBC1, it had been running in some shape or form since the 1990s in its various stage/RTE incarnations. Fleabag might count as it did air on BBC1, albeit it started on BBC3, and although critically acclaimed, I doubt it's what you'd call "really successful".

*edit* and I forget "Miranda".
