We're now out of the usual quiet Summer season for UK TV, in which most of the channels resort to cheap factual or repeats. But September brings with it the return of effort! I thought it would be a nice idea to have a thread to post/discuss any commissioning news for Autumn and beyond.
Here's some recent commissioning news from the BBC The Serpent | 8x60' | BBC One | Drama BBC One has commissioned new eight-part drama series The Serpent, a brand new original drama written by Richard Warlow (Ripper Street) based on the phenomenal true story of how one of the most elusive criminals of the 20th century was caught and brought to trial. The series will be directed by Tom Shankland (The Missing) and produced by Mammoth Screen (Poldark). Con man, escape artist, thief, master of disguise and psychopath, Charles Sobhraj was the chief suspect in the sensational unsolved murders of up to 20 young Western travellers across India, Thailand and Nepal through 1975 and 1976. Having slipped repeatedly from the grasp of authorities worldwide, by 1976 Sobhraj was Interpol's most wanted man and had arrest warrants on three different continents. The Three | 8x60' | BBC One | Drama Based on the trilogy of books by Sarah Lotz, it will be adapted by Golden Globe winner Peter Straughan (Wolf Hall, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) and is a multi-stranded international thriller with a supernatural twist. Commissioned by Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, and Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content, The Three will be executive produced by Kate Sinclair and George Faber for The Forge, and Elizabeth Kilgarriff for the BBC. Four planes crash on the same day in four different countries. Three children miraculously survive... Elspeth Martin, a no-nonsense crash investigator with the NTSB in Washington, is under pressure to find out what caused the crashes. A rationalist, she is dogged in her determination to get at the truth, but this process is obstructed by conflicting evidence, media scrutiny and conspiracy theories. Then there are rumours that a fourth child has survived one of the crashes, and a mysterious message is discovered on a passenger’s mobile phone. The Button | 8x30' | BBC One | Game Show The 8 x 30 minute game show, which can arrive in any home around the country, will visit five families or friends each week and place a talking button at the heart of their front room where the teams face spontaneous challenges against the clock to win a cash prize. The teams must keep a beady eye on the button which turns from green to red when it’s time to play. They miss it at their peril as it’s a race against the clock to hit the button and start the game. The Button delivers the task they must complete in the quickest time, interacts with them, and also reveals their rival teams on screen and the results. All Together Now | 6xTBA' | BBC One | Light Entertainment Hosted by comedian Rob Beckett, each episode sees a range of talented performers (solos and groups) take to the stage to perform in front of The 100, an audience of great singers with big voices and even bigger opinions. If any of The 100 like what they hear, they stand up and join in. The greater the number that stand up and sing along, the higher the contestant’s score. Featuring big name music talent as part of The 100, the series comprises of five hour-long heats. Each contestant is battling to convince as many of The 100 as possible to lend them their voices. The 100 are made up of specially cast members of the public all with singing credentials, from right across the UK. With a real mix of musical backgrounds, the singer will be confronted with 100 people all with something to say - tough crowds don't get any tougher. Come Home | 3x60' | BBC One | Drama Produced by RED Production Company for BBC One, this compelling drama explores the messy realities of parenthood, marriage and what happens when a mother switches the reset button on her life. Set and filmed in Northern Ireland, the drama will focus on a family reeling; from mother Marie, played by Paula Malcomson (Ray Donovan, Broken) who has made the hardest decision of her life, to her bereft husband Greg, played by Christopher Eccleston (The A Word, Fortitude) and their three children. |

Is All Together Now serious?!? That sounds so awfully bad!! At least Pitch Battle was a good idea, just not something that would be popular in today's TV.
Also, Gordon on Cocaine is so badly titled :') Your Song seems to be following This Time Next Year & Suprise Suprise in ITV feelgood TV, nice to see Emma get another primetime credit to her name. |

ITV have
QUOTE(Radio Times) The broadcaster is preparing to air a new strand provisionally called Late Night Live after the 10pm news this autumn.
Airing every weeknight for five weeks from the start of October, the show will focus on the news but with a more serious bent, it is understood. “Think BBC’s This Week, but with an ITV twist,” said a source. Presenting names are being kept a closely guarded secret but it is thought that Andrew Neil, who stepped down as the presenter of the BBC’s Sunday Politics last month, is a potential target. Neil is said to be in the process of renegotiating his contract with the BBC where he presents Daily Politics and This Week. ITV declined to comment on the speculation. The move appears to be part of an attempt by ITV controller of programmes Kevin Lygo to improve the channel’s late night performance, which led to the disastrous experiment with The Nightly Show earlier this year. Airing over eight weeks in the 10pm news slot – which shunted the daily bulletin to later in the evening – the topical entertainment format was hosted by a range of performers including John Bishop, David Walliams and Gordon Ramsay but performed disastrously in the ratings. Lygo told the Edinburgh Television Festival that The Nightly Show would not be returning to 10pm but said that he might still bring the show back in a later time slot, although he sounded highly doubtful: “Certainly, not at 10 o’clock. The challenge is can it work for us later, that sort of thing. I don’t know.” He added: "Did it work? Not really. “There’s a million reasons [why]. With hindsight, a different host every week made it very difficult for the production team. “The theory was that if you build the show there would be these fun people you would slot in each week. What happened of course, on week four you’d have a new host who would come on and say ‘I’m not doing that’ and you’d have to reinvent the show." However, despite Lygo’s complaints, it is understood that Late Night Live is also considering the possibility of rotating hosts each week. The move of the 10pm news met with stiff opposition from ITV’s news provider ITN who believed that the move demeaned the brand and gave the BBC's 10pm bulletin a free run while failing to improve the ratings performance in the slot. |

Bromans is one of those shows that sounds like it will be one of the worst ideas ever, but will deliver incredibly strong ratings for ITV2. A bit like the revived Love Island, really.

BBC One daytime has commissioned a new show called Shakespeare & Hathaway starring Jo Joyner and Mark Benton.

The news that no one wanted....Sam Smith at the BBC...

A new comedy is coming to BBC One called Mister Winner:
QUOTE Following a successful pilot, broadcast as part of the Comedy Playhouse earlier this year, Mister Winner is set to return to BBC One for a six-part series in 2018. When was the last really successful new sitcom on BBC1 or ITV? The BBC continue to make some comedies that are successful on BBC2 - Twenty Twelve and its successor W1A were brilliant. Still Open All Hours has been successful on BBC1 but it doesn't really count as new - even though there have now been more episodes of the revamp than the Ronnie Barker original.

ITV's really struggled with sitcoms in the 21st Century, there's only a handful that I can think of that actually aired, and in terms of ones that have been successful, the only one that springs to mind is "Vicious", although then again it may only seem so due to the strong profile of the two main leads (Ian McKellen & Derek Jacobi).
As for BBC1, you'd probably have to go as far back as Mrs Brown's Boys, which continues to dominate to this day - although then again even though it started in 2010 on BBC1, it had been running in some shape or form since the 1990s in its various stage/RTE incarnations. Fleabag might count as it did air on BBC1, albeit it started on BBC3, and although critically acclaimed, I doubt it's what you'd call "really successful". *edit* and I forget "Miranda". |
