last week the sales #1 dropped to below 30k sales. whilst it probably won't be this low all the time (1D and KDA are sure to outdo that this week) it does make me wonder if we'll ever see another song sell a million downloads (excluding songs already been released).

could it happen? or will the next Uptown Funk/Happy 'only' get ~800k downloads?

It's a worrying thought, but I'm not sure we will. Thanks Spotify :/

For the record:

Biggest selling singles of 2015 (after “Uptown Funk”):

~730,000 Ellie Goulding “Love Me Like You Do”
~670,000 Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie Puth “See You Again”

Neither will get to a million IMO.

it does look like paid for million sellers are going to become an endangered species~

i guess we will get more 'million sellers' generated from chart sales as streaming increases ~ i wonder if we'll get to the stage where the #1 is streamed over 10 million times in a week~

You think it's bad!
Try being an artist!!!
This year Spotify sent a royalty check to an artist with a huge amount of streams. The artist sent them a thank you back, with the message - another one of them and I will be able to get the year's premium subscription to Spotify!

Clearly that wasn't Ed Sheeran - who will have bagged around £5 million for the streams of “Thinking Out Loud” alone.

It works out at around 1p per stream I think.

I don't think it's that much. One of the All About That Bass writers claims he's only made $5679 from people streaming it. That works out as £3671.93. AATB has been streamed 178 million streams on Spotify, which works out as 0.000021p per stream.

Remember that Ed Sheeran will get performers' royalties as well as songwriters royalties. But yes, it is fractions of a penny per stream and obviously that's a lot less than you get paid for a sale or radio play. But then again, with the volume of streams that the biggest songs get, it can really mount up.

Yeah, but you have to consider that Spotify doesn't pay directly to the artist. They pay to rights holders and artists get a portion of that money from rights holders. Plus, that song had more than one songwriter, so everything splits again.

In general websites assume Spotify pays out about $0.007 per stream. That's the number they use when they calculate how much Spotify paid out. For 178 million streams, it would be $1.246 million.

The average payout for Spotify (Feb 2014) was $0.00521 and you need about 140 streams to match 1 iTunes download there. Nokia are the best for paying out at $0.07411 and under 10 streams to match 1 iTunes sale.
In-fact nearly all sites payout better than Spotify with the exception of MySpace Music. The worst of the lot is Amazon Cloud where you need 5,862 streams to match 1 iTunes sale.

Presumably the Official Company does not take this into account when calculating the charts, which must be a major failing on their part. You would think that sites such as Nokia should be allowed more counts to the charts than an the 5 streaming allowed per person, while the 3 worst offenders have having much higher counts per person than the five.
A simple formula based on streams to download price equivalents per site is better than just allowing 5 streams per person. It might even encourage the worst payout sites to pay more to artists!

Since streaming doesn't sell records it's not possible to have a million seller from streaming at all.

The way things are going we might get a million seller from vinyl heehee.gif

No idea how much you get per stream but I would imagine some animals are more equal than others.

Yeah I read that article too, I was pretty shocked by the figure - it must be quite demoralising for the artists.

The same is true for the sale of a single though - the artist and writer will get less than 10% and Apple take a huge percentage (around 30% of the total).

The record industry has been like this since forever. Exploitation is the name of the game.

"Lean On" is nowhere near. I bet it's somewhere around 400,000 paid for sales
