Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois

Posted by: Ryan. 25th November 2016, 10:38 PM

I thought Azerbaijan was last in my thread creating spree, but I forgot good old Portugal! Good reason however, as like Azerbaijan we've heard nothing apart from that they are returning for 2017 after taking a year out to "recalibrate their sound" as certain Buzzjack posters would put it.

I doubt anything drastic will change however and we'll probably end up with the very outdated Festival da Canção choosing an almost certain DNQ, RTP need to be internally selecting Catarina Pereira with a new "Mea Culpa" please. Portugal haven't qualified since 2010 after a quite amazing run of entries from Vania, Flor-de-lis and Filipa Azevedo although Suzy came very close to knocking out Valentina Monetta in 2014 - although while Quero Ser Tua was a fan favourite (despite me finding it horribly repetitive) no-one could've denied Valentina that final spot and that amazing reaction!

Good luck to Portugal in 2017. Last 6 years were unsuccessful. But I still listening Filipa Sousa «Vida minha» from 2012.

Festival da Canção is back on 19th/26th February and 5th March, but in shock news they have dropped the language rule! ohmy.gif Hopefully this shows an intention to put forward a more modern entry for a change, perhaps they can do an "Israel"?

Semifinal 1 - February 19

5. "O Teu Melhor" ("your best") - Rui Drummond
6. "Without You" - Lisa Garden
7. "Amar Pelos Dois" ("loving for two") - Salvador Sobral
8. "Nova Glória" ("new glory") - Viva La Diva

Semifinal 2 - February 26
1. "My Paradise" - David Gomes
2. "Nunca Me Fui Embora" ("I was never gone") - Lena D'Água
3. "Ao Teu Olhar" ("to your eyes") - Beatriz Felício
4. "Don't Walk Away" - Pedro Gonçalves
5. "Andamos no Céu" ("we walk in the sky") - Helena Kendall
6. "Primavera" ("spring") - Celina da Piedade
7. "Gente Bestial" ("awesome people") - Jorge Benvinda
8. "Se O Tempo Não Falasse" ("if time didn't talk") - Inês Sousa

Final - March 5th

- For this year's Festival da Canção, that matches RTP's 60th anniversary, RTP asked 16 of Portugal's top pop, rock and alternative songwriters and producers to do a song for the event. Márcia and Celina da Piedade are the only ones who chose to perform their songs themselves whereas the others chose a singer.
- The language rule was cut out, with the songwriters having the choice of writing the song in any language. However only three of them decided to do a song in English with the others still choosing Portuguese. However some of them have claimed that they are preparing an English version as well.
- Rui Drummond represented Portugal in ESC 2005 as part of 2B. He won The Voice Portugal 2014.
- Deolinda Kinzimba won The Voice Portugal 2015.
- Fernando Daniel won The Voice Portugal 2016. His blind audition singing Adele's When We Were Young went viral worldwide and even featured in Buzzfeed USA.
- David Gomes and Pedro Gonçalves also took part in The Voice Portugal 2016.
- Kika Cardoso, one of the members of Viva La Diva, won X-Factor Portugal in 2014.

I think I actually fell asleep about half way through! Anyway, these are the 4 qualifiers:

01. Viva La Diva - Nova Glória - 22 points
02. Salvador Sobral - Amar Pelos Dois - 20 points
03. Fernando Daniel - Poema A Dois - 17 points
04. Deolinda Kinzimba - O Que Eu Vi Nos Meus Sonhos - 12 points

Salvador won the jury vote and Viva La Diva the public vote. Let's just hope the second semi final has some better songs!

Probably the worst national selection show I've ever seen, my favourite was probably Lisa Garden just because she was vaguely uptempo but even she would struggle to be more than a 4/10.

Unless there is an improvement in the second semi (rumours say it's actually worse) then Portugal are surely finishing rock bottom of their semi. Really really poor and it's such a shame after they've supposedly made a big effort to modernise and revamp it.

TONIGHT'S NATIONAL FINAL...
PORTUGAL

Festival da Canção

5th March 2017
Begins at 9.05pm in Portugal and in the UK and at 10.05pm Central European Time.
The show is scheduled to last 3 hours 55 minutes.

Watch the selection via the https://www.rtp.pt/play/direto/rtp1.

Running order
01. Jorge Benvinda - Gente bestial
02. Pedro Gonçalves - Don't Walk Away
03. Lena d'Água - Nunca me fui embora
04. Salvador Sobral - Amar pelos dois
05. Fernando Daniel - Poema a dois
06. Celina da Piedade - Primavera
07. Deolinda Kinzimba - O que eu vi nos meus sonhos
08. Viva La Diva - Nova glória

Voting format
There will be a single round of voting. The result will be determined using a mix of regional jury voting and televoting although the exact split is yet to be confirmed. It is presumed it will be 50/50.

The favourites to win
The hype seems to be around Salvador Sobral although we can't count out the semi-final winners who were Celina da Piedade and Viva La Diva. In addition, it is worth noting that Pedro Gonçalves has public support after winning the televote in his semi-final but the juries were far from fans. However, the regional juries could shake things up and give him the jury support to match his public support.

Excuse me. FOUR hours? Four?? Really?

Posted by: AdamAloud 6th March 2017, 12:52 AM

Last place in semi 1 sewn up then! God Portugal, why are you so utterly tragic.

Posted by: Conderella 6th March 2017, 07:42 AM

I wouldn't go as far. Maybe someone will get sucked into the emotion and his manner is quite quirky so I am not sure about the last place but the fact it's doa is obvious.

*watch this qualifying comfortably in the sea of other female ballads lolz*

This seems to have a very love/hate reaction on forums, I assumed most of the love was somewhat ironic. However, Portugal are now 7th favourites to win Eurovision after shortening from 100/1 outsiders to 10/1 today and will be second favourite by tomorrow if they keep shortening at the speed they are.

Am I missing something?

Posted by: J▲hq 6th March 2017, 03:40 PM

I've listened twice and it sounds completely dull and unremarkable to me.

Posted by: Conderella 6th March 2017, 04:14 PM

Oh shit, 10/1? They are clearly expecting a Tom Dice effect from the performance it seems. The song is blah but the singer saves it, or something

Posted by: Liаm 6th March 2017, 04:22 PM

Legit what on earth is this

Posted by: LexC 6th March 2017, 04:33 PM

Timely reminder that the current top 10 of the odds only has 3 confirmed entries in it and is based on only six bookmakers [/storminateacup]

Posted by: Iz~ 6th March 2017, 05:54 PM

There's no song there. Just a guy making unusual hand movements and mumbling for 3 minutes.

Inept even for Portugal.

Posted by: Alex! 7th March 2017, 12:07 AM

This is awful. by far, the worst this year so far.

Posted by: Euphorique 7th March 2017, 12:41 AM

I see a lot of people loving this but I dont get it at all. I know the lyrics are great but that's irrelevant in a show like this. Not my style whatsoever, but its right up RTP's alley

Posted by: Umi 11th March 2017, 04:32 PM

Why does this have such good odds...?

Posted by: N-S 11th March 2017, 05:41 PM

Well against the tide of opinions around here, I love this. It's beautiful, it's heartfelt, it's timeless, it's Portugal staying true to itself and not being a sell-out to generic ESC music just to appease the pundits, it's a singer being who he is and not some plastic popstar.

I'm very proud of Portugal this year, whether it flops or not and haters gonna hate.

I can sort of see why people are thinking this might do well, it's completely un-Eurovision, but that might work in its favour.

It sticks out hugely on the compilation, but only in the respect that it feels like I've stumbled into a jazz bar for three minutes or something. I can certainly see the juries flocking towards this, I could almost imagine it being on the La La Land (Portuguese remake) soundtrack. Not sure if the televoters will go for it? If they do then it certainly stands a strong shot at top ten.

Posted by: Jonjo 11th May 2017, 12:59 PM

The 'Color Of My Life' (or whatever Poland's entry was) of 2017? I think so.

Absolutely dire. I really don't get it? His "quirkiness" and "awkwardness" feel so insincere and forced to me. Really not a fan but this is def going top 3, isn't it? sad.gif

La La Land was exactly what I was thinking the other day. Maybe that goes some way to explaining the success after that was such a box office smash?

The first page of this thread makes for an amazing read now. "DOA", "last place sewn up" kink.gif After seeing his live performance and watching Italy's from the rehearsal, I'm rooting for this more.

Posted by: pippa 11th May 2017, 02:09 PM

I can fully see its Eurovision appeal. It would be wonderful to see Portugal win, i really don't see what is so great about Italy this year to be the favourites. Portugal, even they do not win they should achieve their best result ever in the 53 years they have participated.

Posted by: Liаm 11th May 2017, 02:19 PM

This is still complete and utter shite. I don't get it at all. I agree with Jonjo the performance just awkward, rather than "adorable" to me. The "song" is terrible too, it reminds me of Albania 2012 without the power and emotion. This would be the worst winner ever for me by miles, and possibly the worst top 5 since I've seen the contest except maybe Frans. But I'm getting more and more convinced it will win :/

At least it's better than Spain's entry. Only just.

Posted by: Catderella 11th May 2017, 09:17 PM

This was my favourite performance of semi one bar Finland. This must finish top 5. Will prefer Bulgaria winning but top 5 is fab too

Lyric of the Portuguese song:

"If one day someone asks about me
Tell them I lived to love you
Before you, I only existed
Tired and with nothing to give

My dear, listen to my prayers
I beg you to return, to want me again
I know that one can’t love alone
Maybe slowly, you might learn again

My dear, listen to my prayers
I beg you to return, to want me again
I know that one can’t love alone
Maybe slowly, you might learn again

If your heart doesn’t wish to give in
Not to feel passion, not to suffer
Without making plans on what will come after
My heart can love for the both of us"

This thread was a funny read!

I remember listening first when I came back home drunk (I think I'd been DJing) and of all the new ones I listened to that one made the biggest impression on me. It's hard to put a finger on what it is compared to the usual dross (excluding Suzy) that they send.
